Good review anyhow!
Only bad point I can think of is no real steering wheel support. Everything else is fabulous.
8.5/10
I think with racing games, so much of how you view it is down to the feel of the racing and I guess I just didn't enjoy RRU that much.
If you like Burnout, definitely give this game a look.. even if you decide to wait for the inevitable price drop..
but but it has explosions so doesn't that mean its a good racer
If you enjoyed Split Second- this is your game!
If you enjoyed Motorstorm Apocalypse- this is your game!
If you enjoyed Blur and Burnouot- this is your game!
P.s. if you haven't played motorstorm yet and you're an arcade racing fan, I feel sorry for you.
May I ask where it fell apart for people? I admit the shift to a city from the jungle took a bit of acclimating (and the story mode is God awful, but what racers story isn't?), but I feel using environmental disasters to warp the terrain to be more than suitable.
Plus they have a level where you are racing on top of and through skyscrapers. How awesome is that?
i have PC version of this game and it seems that you not only suck at this game, you don't even know HOW TO PLAY IT. yes, it has a learning curve, because it's not a game with a WIN button like many current titles.
"If your Power gauge is full, you'll get a flashing prompt on-screen that lets you know a building can be crashed into, creating a shortcut straight through it. Again, it's accompanied by a camera shot that takes control away from you, which can be annoying, as once you regain control, you're headed for an unbreakable part of the scenery and a crash, losing any advantage you might have gained from taking the shortcut in the first place."
that. that, IS FUCKIN HORSESHIT AND FLAT OUT LIE. it works exactly the same as in Split/Second. you get a prompt that there's a wall you can break, but it's YOU who decides if you're gonna use boost to break that wall or not and you DON'T use boost when the prompt is shown.
and din't it occured to you that those black and yellow marking ARE INDICATIONS THAT YOU CAN'T BREAK THOSE OBJECTS?
to all people who were interested in this game: if you liked Burnout, Flatout, Split/Second and if you like arcade games in general - buy this game cause it's great.
add to that the fact that apparently all those "great" reviewers can't play this game. there are some reviews where reviewers claim that you can't drift in Unbounded which is a clear indicator that they simply didn't play this game AT ALL. after 2-3 races i got used to the control scheme and all mechanics.
- never had a problem with tracks - frankly, i think that the tracks in Unbounded are great. the only problem i have is with bloom and city neons during night races when there's a lot of destruction and explosions, for a few seconds you can't see anything.
- never had a problem with boosting. it's not infinite and if you're turning on boost right after you saw prompt to destroy a wall or truck - you're doing it wrong.
- didn't have problem with AI. AI is tougher than in other games(for once it's not a script like in the past RR games), but it's definitely not cheap.
at first i thought the music sucked, but after awhile i kinda got into that, whatever "genre" of techno it is.
You definitely should. I did the same thing as you by playing a couple of hours then going back to Pacific rift. It just felt like the jungle was more suited to all the bizarre car types and that the routes were better defined for which car you were using. It took me a while, but you find these littered in apocalypse as well. My friend "mains" the monster truck and didn't like the game at first, but after a few plays he eased back into slamming ppl off the course and taking the right paths. Unless we were playing skyline, in which I used my speedy bikes and racers to trick him into slamming me only to dodge and watch him fall off a building.
I don't think there is much point anymore in a racing game that relies little on actual steering and driving mechanics, even when they are exaggerated and cartoonish, and more on gimmicks to take out your opponents. At that point, I think its time for the genre to come out of the closet and bring on a revival of car combat games, even if they are in a simpler form than TM for mass appeal.
@SoundsLike: I understand where you're coming from. But for the folks like me, more variety in racing can't hurt. While I do enjoy the combat racers (blur and TM being my favorites) I crave more of that depth I get from Forza or even arcade racers such as certain NFSs (that poor series) or my personal arcade fav Midnight Club LA. True that few titles nail that though. I feel Unbounded does. Split/Second as well IMO. Basically I need a method to my madness.
- There are no graphical customization options beyond anisotropy and resolution/aspect ratio changes
- The level creator crashes on select (fixed in 1.03 patch)
- People are having the game crash when in 16:10 or 4:3 ratio
- Others are having the game crash with a wheel or gamepad plugged in
- Some are having the game crash at random intervals
- The rest are just having it crash when you boot up the first level
Definitely wait this one out.
That's a pity, I was going to grab it on sale from Steam when it flies down to compliment my 360 version. Think I still will if it all gets ironed out by then.
Shame this will not see a sequel, debuted 22 on the UK charts. Really shameful promotion by Namco really.
