"84% on metacritic? Hell yes. Nice. Glad to see it get some well-deserved praise."
Haven't you heard?
Less than 90% = FAILURE
I just recently bought R2,but haven't finished it yet. I'll probably pick this up once I'm done.
Played the shit out of it.
I fucking adore it.
HHHHNNNNGGGGHH RESISTANCE BONARS! :DDDDDDD
what is happening this is to civil ..............is this is end of world FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
He was. That's why it's late. With him moving to Boston, and then hurting his wrist (lol wank joke), it was slowing up fast. So I bought the game myself and took over for him.
Fortunately, he and I pretty much totally agree about the game, so the result is the same!
Good read..and I agree with your comments (just completed the game last night after renting)
I loved R1 (the whole feel, narrative and presentation)and thought R2 (apart from a much beloved online co-operative) was a disjointed sequel.R3 strikes a great balance and is more like a true sequel to R1.
Some of the set piece battles are epic, but I did find that some of the melee/close range weapon enforced sections became a tad monotonous.
also agree about the patch and enforced load ..geez..way too long and I also was victim to some of the progression glitches (funnily enough more towards the start of the game)
Tis a great game though, tight gameplay, fantastic art style and a good story to bundle it all up...
"It took all of 10minutes for the updates/installs on my end."
Yeah, Jim forgot to mention that he still rocks 56k dial-up.
2. You're the first person I have ever heard of encountering bugs. I'm not accusing you of lying, but that's a shame that they happened in such an atmospheric game that sometimes relies on scripted moments exactly right.
The Sharpshooter + Move support is good, but no where near up to par with Killzone 3, which was just freakin sublime. It's functional in R3 and doesn't often get in the way, but it doesn't feel like the BEST way to play the game like it did in KZ3.
The 3D, however, is better than KZ3 in that it has far less crosstalk and won't leave you dizzy after a long play session the way KZ3 could. It still doesn't exactly add to the gameplay experience the way it does in Super Stardust HD, for example, and feels a bit gimmicky as a consequence, but it does look good... even great at times, like during the train sequence. It's something fun to do on your second playthrough, if you have the option.
Not exactly fair to compare R3 to a top exclusive Sony IP that received a 10/10 on this very site, but as another FPS with Sharpshooter and 3D support, the comparison is natural and R3 holds up surprisingly well to it.
Tell that to poor Bloodrayne: Betrayal and Bodycount. I'm sure they'd have loved to get an 8.
Since it requires you to DL a generous sized patch Day 1 (which was the result of a delayed beta cause PSN was hacked), and you had to DL firmware to play online and you had to take 1 minute to go on PSN to redeem a code...it isn't a masterpiece? Sure it is not the most pleasant of delays but c'mon.
Other PS3 games have mandatory installs but other reviews don't mention it. But I suppose that is cause Jim is the main person with a beef with installs on a HDD. I'm not going to touch the bugs topic cause I've yet to see a glitch in R3.
This is just...whatever.
"I'm not going to touch the bugs topic cause I've yet to see a glitch in R3."
Well then you have no point whatsoever, Adam.
Also lol@complaining about 8/10.
I wasn't a fan of R1 or R2, as they felt rather sterile and not very intriguing. With that said, I have never played a more cinematic single player with visuals that simply inspire. And being able to immerse yourself in the society, the civilization, as it hangs on for dear life, instead of running through empty corridors as some sort of super soldier in R1 and R2, is far more entertaining
I mean...when you're running through the forest, trying to escape, and you just see big explosions rock out in front of you...you see dirt leap into the air, like you've never seen before. The game has such a size and scale that constantly reminds you how insignificant and mortal you really are as everything towers over you, even the explosions.
I think a lot has to be said about the feel of the game, the guns especially, on a technical level. The sound, the vibration, the way they move: It is just fun to shoot things, even if it's a rock. I could dump entire clips into a tree in R3 and be thoroughly amused for an hour.
Personally, I feel it's more of a 9, but Jim does hit on a lot of valid points: The XMB and the online pass are just sheer annoying. The fact that I couldn't enter it in game was sort of a "wtf?" moment.
An awesome review though.
What if you booted the game up (downloaded the update/installed the game) but something important came up and at the start menu and you had to leave for the day and then came back to the game the next day to play it. That would me this game became a masterpiece?
Redeeming the Online Pass, installing the game, and DLing (even a lengthy) Day 1 Patch should not be reflected in whether a game is considered a "masterpiece" or not. And I do believe the redeeming the Online Pass via the PSN Store is not Insomniac's doing but Sony's, therefore making your complaints valid against the systems and makers of the system and not actually the GAME ITSELF.
And yes, I (as well as others on here) have not see any bugs whatsoever.
Thanks for the quick turnaround on the review Jim.
some spoilers ahead
think of all the shit they just threw aside. Pure Chimera, The Cloven, Leben Geist (a type of Cloven mentioned to be huge and powerful. powerful enough to defeat a Goliath by itself and without any weapons), Gray Tech (technology from another unknown alien species that had great power), it has been speculated that the events at the end of R2 meant that the whole of earth has been transported to a different area of space, etc... in the first game, the Chimera were lead by the Angels, in the second, they were lead by Daedalus, but in the 3rd, they were leaderless, just trying to kill humans because that is what they do.
and i am still not sure how we go from the ending of R3 to humans winning the war against the Chimera. 90% of the population is dead. so they close a wormhole. that doesn't stop the actual gigantic Terraformer machines from working. but they just up and tell us that resistance groups around the world are winning their battles for no real reason. there was so much more they could have done with the story that i can't feel any excitement with the way they dealt with it.
I hope these online passes end.
To quote Metacritic
Resistance 1 has an 86
Resistance 2 has an 87
Resistance 3 has an 84
Infamous has an 85 and Infamous 2 has a 83
So, actually critics like Resistance a bit better than Infamous, so I am confused why you are making it sound like Resistance is a "B" franchise next to others like Infamous when Resistance is actually more popular? Is it perhaps you personal feelings towards the franchise that you are trying to make fact or something?
I am honestly confused.
