"It's all just too poorly crafted, at least by today's standards." to be honest resi games are still operating at the exact same level plot wise. they may try to be less ridiculous these days (bad thing IMO) but it still comes off just as silly and cheesy to me, the difference is that it's unintentional now :( .
the graphics i can deal with, i kinda like them actually, and HD remakes are rarely done in a way that isn't somewhat insultingly lazy, ie "raise the resolution and make sure nothing fucks up". the classic resi control scheme however is shockingly painful to play these days, so as this review suggests i won't be picking this up.
The game totally holds up, I pray they go back to this style more often.
Anyway, Veronica was always the beginning of the end of me. As I complained about on Nostaljourney (shameless plug for Mike). Plug aside, it was a clunky game; full of backtracking, sluggish controls and unfair camera angles. It was an average survival horror and I never saw what the fuss was about. Giving it HD graphics would never fix the problems I had back in the day.
@Holmes: I'm guessing Capcom don't really have much of a say in the remake or RE: Zero, what with them being exclusives for Nintendo. Shame, since the remake is easily one of the best RE games in the franchise. Seems like they weren't thinking ahead, business-wise, and now most will have to miss out.
I enjoyed the perspective of these two Resident Evil reviews, focusing on the overall packages they're presented in, and how they hold up, rather than just focusing on the game most of us have already played. Good shit Holmes.
Veronica was meh to me. RE1 remake FTW... oh how far we've come. Chris punches fucking boulders now.
...
Seriously though, ouch. I remember liking this game back in the day, but I never finished it, and I don't know if I'll ever get around to it. I had it on PS2, lost it, then bought it on the GameCube, but never got around to playing it again. Maybe I'll give it another go, soon? I already own all of these on the Cube, so I might as well save my money and just give the system some much needed lovin'.
I played it to death on the Dreamcast and I think I want to experience it again but I'll probably hunt for a PS2/GC version over this. I'm a bit worried about these rose-tinted glasses, though; I'd hate to break them.
I tend to pretty much disagree with both of your reviews on these games entirely, but I still appreciate all the work you put into them.
imagine a new RE Game with dodging, the secondary weapon system of RE1, RE1 REmake Zombies(meaning will take you almost a clip to kill 1 zombie) branching paths, tons of bosses and others that are chasing you everywhere. the unlockables of the series like new costumes, infinite weapons, mercenaries or so.
if only Capcom would take notes from past games instead of turning this into something else.
might buy this but it'll probably awhile before i get this(have it in the "Essentials Collection")
But.. All of these can't be considered the same genre either, like you said it and House of the Dead wasn't. Zombie heavy, yes, without a doubt, but not genre similar.
The Dead rising series is decidedly different from any Resident Evil game, which is why Capcom bothers with it when they already had a zombie series (I believe this was pointed out when the first game came out). Left 4 Dead is a FPS game, where the only games to compete with that in the RE series would be the long dead Gun Survivor series. And Dead Island being a mash-up of those two, and their genres (specifically whatever you'd call DR2's) at best.
The Call of Duty modes are just that: Game modes. And they were admittedly put into the game to cash in on a craze(fairly recently, if I recall), with really not much more substance then that.
As for Lollipop Chainsaw, I don't have much to go on considering I'm not following the game very closely, but I'm assuming its got more in common with a Devil May Cry type game, then a survival horror one.
This leaves comparing a Resident Evil game against every other Resident Evil game listed.. Which isn't exactly fair until you look back and realize that this was probably the same sentiment about Code Veronica when it was first released -which I assume it was.
The games never been lauded for much good, which is why I don't disagree with the review past the points I made about its genre. Its always been something of the red headed bastard child of the main RE series, and its probably the main reason for their jump to the over the shoulder, highly revised, format of 4 and 5. Its also the only RE game I've never finished. I can't recall how far I've made it in the game (which isn't a good sign at all) and only know I've owned it (on the PS2, as Code Veronica X) and played it at some point in my lifetime. Not the best list of memories for a game when you consider its a part of one of my all time favorite series.
So this review, even though I kinda already knew it steer this way, makes me doubt myself in wanting to spend $20 on this like I had planned - a plan I was only making BECAUSE I've never finished the game before (and don't have that PS2 or that copy CVX, any more.) so /sigh.
2nd important point: this is the game the video game loving Watchowski brothers ripped off when they came up with that time stopping/wall running/rotating camera special effect that made The Matrix so awesome. Wesker did it before Trinity!
No need to buy this game, just watch the best parts on Youtube.
CV felt dated about a week after it was released the first time, nevermind the X releases

Not really, 2,3 and 4 (and even 5 barely) are much better, and 2&3 are way cheaper on PS3 than CV.
The biggest contribution CV made to the series was kicking the already stupid plot into Pants on Head retarded mode. 4 dialed that back a bit, then 5 went full-retard
"RE: Code: Veronica" is a great survival horror game that should be played by fans of the genre. However I'd rather have and HD version of "RE Zero" and "REmake" - especially the latter.
Older Resis have always been the Marmite of gaming but for my money they're great and I'll be buying C:VX HD ASAP.
But I'll agree that the old gameplay mechanics really are painful now. I loved them back in the day, but it really is hard for me to go back and replay old RE games. They did a radical gameplay makeover in RE4 for a reason - because the gameplay was feeling clunky and old, even back then.
The exact same thing killed CVX on the PS2 for me. Even though a friend who'd played the dreamcast version warned me about that fucking tyrant battle, I just thought to myself 'It can't be THAT bad' and pressed on with nowhere near enough ammo to beat the son of a bitch. This and RE:Zero are the only two in the main series I haven't completed.
To be honest though, even though graphics were obviously better in CV, I was disappointed with it at the time compared to say, RE2 OR Nemesis. For me, it lacked the brutality of those games (I mean, you could blow zombies in half in RE2) and just felt too toned down from what had come before. Wesker is pretty cool in CVX, though, and gives Claire and Chris and good kicking if I remember rightly.
I just wish they would remake RE2. I remember getting to a point where I could complete it in under 2 hours, using no first aid sprays and making no saves. Hunk was a cool bonus, but Tofu can fuck right off. It was that piece of shit that got the better of me in the end.
