Well screw this, there's no way people should even consider it, then. Go for the Wii version. It's the same price.
Seriously though, great review. Definitely grabbing this for $10 (Playstation Plus). Also, I'm splitting it with four friends with PSN sharing so it's more like $2 a piece. Can't wait to download it tonight.
You know.. I found myself feeling bad about wanting to get it ASAP after reading the review too, if only because Jon is making me feel like its not worth the full price they're asking..
But I made the mistake of telling my girl it was out today, so she's strong arming me into getting it. It's her favorite game of all time (and really high on my list) and she told me she didn't care how I got it, just that I have to get it -lol. We don't have an older console either anymore, so yeah, this is going to be her only way to play it again, lol.. Oh well, screw saving a few bucks on this one I guess, I'm going to download the game, lol.
RE5 is the Mila Jovovich of the series; she just shouldn't be there.
That makes sense though, Holmes made it sound like if you don't have any other way to play this game, then get it, but if you do, this can be passed on.
Seeing as you don't have a console to play the other versions on, it only makes sense to get the HD re-release, especially if she wants it THAT bad.
If you've never played it you probably should feel obligated. I have the PS2 version but I'll probably pick this up; the PS2 version was kind of...fugly, and with low polygons. :P
However, if you haven't played this game yet - it's worth your time and money. Great review!
It is one of those perfect games.
Its the same price as it would be for the same amount of points, but I know theres people who are going to mess with figuring out if they had enough points to cover it, or how many points they needed to buy for it.. So, just hoping to clear that all up for everyone.
You can love survival/horror, action/horror and any other gametype and I'm not trying to downplay how good of a game RE 4 is but it's simply not the RE many of us started playing. In fact, while I really like RE 4, I hate what it did to the series.
What made the early games so scary was fixed camera views obscurring much of your surroundings, tank controls that made your options feel extremely limited (and you thus very fragil), and a complete lack of ammo strewn about the game, which made players worry about spending even one or two shotgun shells on a random zombie or dog. RE 4 did away with almost all of this (ammo can be limited at a couple points), changing the series from survival/horror to action/horror.
The bad part of these changes is that starting with RE5 they have alienated original franchise fans (myself included) while still failing to please diehard action fans as well (the comments on this site alone shitting on RE5 in favor of Dead Space were too numerous to count). The series is seriously just a different beast now.
But back on-topic, RE4 is a great game everyone should play. It's just not the best RE game.
Mike literally just bought RE4 wii last night on amazon. As the only person left on the planet who hasn't played Resident Evil, I assume this review was written for him alone.
If you still haven't played this game you really need to, there's a reason it's gotten so much praise.
Amazingly crafted game, but to me, it will never be a well crafted Mario game. But that because Mario means something different to me than it does to you. I'm sure the same is true with what RE means to us.
@ Rekreatur - Agreed that it does look mich better than the PS2 version, especially on a HDTV. My feeling was that it doesn't look that different from the Wii version, which has more detailed textures, higher polygon counts on characters, more detailed backgrounds, betteranti-aliasing, etc, than the PS2 version.
Hope that helps clear that up!
Your point is completely invalid. 3d Mario threw everything 2d Mario was out the window. It didn't expand on shit. It changed everything.
I wonder how Code Veronica is though, aside from RE4 I've played no RE games and I think I should correct that wrong one day. RE2 and RE3 are like $6 on PSN so I don't know what I'm waiting for.
Ah, I gotcha now. Been a long time since I've played the Wii version (which was my favorite version) so I forgot how it looked.
Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
RE4 was awesome and awful at the same time. Awesome: because it's a stellar game and something new to the genre. Awful: because it was the begining of the "action" word dominion over the "survival horror" concept that Resident Evil was all about.
I share the exact same feelings posted by Revuhlooshun.
"if you don't like RE 1-CV, then you don't like RE, simple as that."
You nailed it man. That's so true. So-goddamn-true. And I agree with your other thoughts 110% -- always nice to see old school survival fans!
Wait, no demo? Booooo.
Resident evil is not the best Survival horror
Its is the best Action Horror, different genre
While I agree that the gameplay in RE4 and RE5 is in no way aligned with the earlier games, I disagree that there isn't horror. It's just a different kind of tension. You're constantly being swarmed by dozens of enemies at once, and you usually only have a matter of seconds between yourself and a gory death. The bosses are the best and the scariest in the series, and the atmosphere is terrifying in those earlier levels. It's survival horror, it's just a different take. The older games are more puzzle based, and there's a place for that too, but RE4 is definitely a different face of the same beast.
