This would be one of those games. I can't freakin wait.
JOHNATHAN HOLMES!JOHNATHAN HOLMES!JOHNATHAN HOLMES!
i love y0u :)
That said, I'm not buying this. I have it on Gamecube and can play it on my Wii, and it looks great in my opinion.
Mario 64 took the basic premise of Mario, the core gameplay and its mechanics, and expanded upon it.
Resident Evil 4 took the basic premise of Resident Evil, the core gameplay and its mechanics, and threw it out the window.
I'll keep this brief: I can certainly appreciate RE4 as a fun game in and of itself. With that said, there really is no horror in that game. There is no survival, no tension, no immediate sense of urgency. You're given a giant briefcase full of guns and thrown into these wide, open fields in the middle of Spain of which the only crop ever grown in them is ammunition.
The Resident Evil series really revolves around that survival, and it's where its fear comes from: That constant tension, always being on the razor's edge, so to speak. You're always in small room and tight corridors, only able to count the shotgun shells you have on maybe one hand at any given time.
I think the only really part of that game that I can say truly brought that adrenaline rush was the Garrador in the jail cell.
But, without the Resident Evil title, it's still a great game. And a great review. None of this is necessarily new, but...you asked why some people don't like it!
Also, it's currently only $10 for PS+ users. RE1, 2 & 3 are all free!!
Excellent review Jonathan. This port is lazy but this game is still stunning.
Once I played the Wii version with the aiming controls, I could never go back to a regular controller. The Move controller may have better motion than the Wii Remote, but the aiming on it is TERRIBLE -- Line-of-sight IR is much more accurate right now, so the controls will be much better on the Wii.
That, and the fact that I have a retail copy on the Wii and it's only a download everywhere but in Japan on the PS3 and 360.
On a side note, there weren't any Move options, Holmes? I thought for sure I read somewhere that Move would be compatible. Huh.
that's a rather elitist way to look at it. what if someone plays it and doesn't like survival horror or third person shooters? what if they prefer RPGs and Sandbox games?
Games "I" think are must haves in the all time top 10 are:
Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Chrono Trigger
Ninja Gaiden: Black
Soul Calibur 2
Resident Evil 4
The rest would take me more time to pin down, but I think I would add FFX to that list pretty quick.
If you get used to how it plays, Code Veronica has the best story in a RE game by farrrrrrr. That's how I would review it. It's also a long game.
i guess i'll get it because i don't have a pre ps3 gen console anymore but I feel bad getting it now...
oh wait i found a 5 euro version on the PC, is that okay?
I could chalk the distaste up to some minute things, such as being bored with the combat mechanics after a few hours, that stupid music that crops up with every battle which wore itself out after the first few encounters, or facing massive gauntlets of enemies in the castle. As you might guess, I favor Silent Hill over Resident Evil.
But your review actually articulated it perfectly for me. "The game is cited as one of the primary inspirations for Gears of War, Dead Space, and multiple other extremely successful third-person shooters -- Resident Evil 4 reinvented the genre". I haven't been able to get into any of those titles!
So yeah, there is something wrong with me as many would probably point out. But it's a relief to finally tie it all together. RE4 is where things started to change, and it's those changes that just don't mesh with my tastes, which are essentially an import of FPS-style accents into a third person environment. Which is more like nuts & gum than peanut butter & chocolate.
That's probably not what you'd want to read in response to your review, but I can't stress enough that this is in fact a compliment. The well-written front half inadvertently shed light on one of the murky areas of my gaming history, and the back end drove home the point that there's nothing new to be gained for owners of the wii version.
Probably should have made this a cblog. Oh well.
I don't feel the old mechanic "hampered" the experience for me in any way. You saying the game has the best story gives me hope that I'll love even more. If I come across like a dick I don't mean it, but I do get a little offended when people talk negatively about the old controls. There not for everyone but I really miss them.
"Code Veronica is hampered by the fact that it still has the old control scheme, with the old camera angles and shooting method. It's really painful to go back and play those games."
Disagree - I don't think they're unplayable - they're not even really that hard.
I'd also recommend Code Veronica over RE4 every time. RE4 is like that solid, mindless action movie that you know and love - Code Veronica is like Psycho (literally in many respects!).
