I was cautiously looking forward to this, but I was expecting it to end up this way. God it sucks when one of your favorite kinds of games gets completely abandoned by the industry.
P.S. Does Battlefield1943 still have a decent sized community on xbla? I loved the demo, and I've been thinking of getting it but it seems XBLA multiplayer only shooters don't have good track records.
Agreed. Also, im getting anti-console vibes, especially this
"Nexuiz is also coming to PC, however, so let's not let count it out as a hopeless cause yet."
Is the implication here that the game could be modded towards a greater product or that if it was a console only game it would somehow be less than the sum of its parts?
The thing about "bringing back" arena shooters, though... it's just never going to happen by making more arena shooters with shinier graphics and identical gameplay. Quake III and UT2k4 basically perfected the genre, so every time someone tries to release a new shooter, well, it's just going to feel like "this is good, but I'd rather be playing Q3." People shouldn't just copy the old formula, they should evolve it.
Take a look at... I dunno, Red Eclipse. Comes immediately to mind. I feel it's one of the best attempts at reviving Q3-style gameplay in ages. Ultimately, it's not super great -- little things like weapon balance and player physics are lacking, and it's completely devoid of character -- but it integrally doesn't just copy Q3 step-for-step. Rather, it's got a number of interesting ideas like parkour-style walljumps and climbs, combined with jetpacks and very vertical level design that make it feel like something new and fresh in the vein of old-school shooters, rather than a clone. That's what we need. Someone willing to take the spirit of arena shooters and change and polish it.
The real problem with arena shooters overall is that the gameplay is dated and tedious. I was bored if them a decade ago, what can they offer now?
Yet this genre is my alltime favourite. Unless we get better controllers though I see little prospect for a comeback of this genre.
The default sensitivity was plenty fast, and it certainly didn't remind me of "playing Quake III as a tank." I will definitely be picking this one up.
@Skyblade
The game looks good. Download the trial, and decide for yourself.
FWIW I have no problems rocket-jumping to 180, jump-strafing or bunny-hopping with a controller. And I know I'm not the only one. It doesn't matter shit that one can't do it quite as good as with a mouse, and there's the bias.
"Nexuiz (PC, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade [reviewed])"
Yea, totally a pc gamer.
There's still Xonotic to look forward to. It won't really be considered a complete game by most until 1.0, but 0.6 is right around the corner and if the current autobuild I've been messing around with is any indication, it'll be a blast to play if you can find players.
@RoOhDiNi
"Eversince Consoles became leadplatform shooters have been slowed down in order to suit the sluggish gamepad controls. It is because of people not beeing able to run and gun that they had to come up with something like a coversystem in the first place."
Totally agreed, oldschool shooters like Contra Hardcorps, Dinosaurs for Hire, and Vectorman were great shooters because of this, even Metal Arms and Buck bumble were good at it, if you count them anyway.
This review is not anywhere closely accurate for the PC version, as the key board and mouse controls feel like they were designed to be just like Quake 3 (obviously you can adjust them in a menu)
It is a very intensive game so you will have yo use the bench marker, (yes this game has a bench marker ) to see if you are running it at 60fps as with any arena FPS you want it to run as smooth as you can so once you get online you can rock.
Yeah I feel like it does need more work but it seems like the developers are going in for the long run.
I feel bad that your experiences on the 360 and PS3 version sucked but.. honestly if you were truly into arena FPS you would never chooses those platforms.
Visuals are great on the PC and put tribes:ascended to shame in graphics and weapon accuracy.
well worth the $10
Not only can the investor leverage on his investment, he can always stay in the unit should he decide not to rent out the unit.
Investing in stocks, gold etc has really no tangible benefits on your investment. Thats just my 2 cents thought though
Thank you author for the informative writeup.
