Review: Monday Night Combat photo

Two teams of cartoon-like class-based combatants compete in multiplayer arenas with a range of quirky skills and ludicrous weapons. Sound familiar? Of course it does!

Monday Night Combat looks and sounds as derivative as they come, with an art style and general premise that appears shamelessly ripped from Valve's Team Fortress 2. However, under its aesthetic surface, Monday Night Combat boasts a deceptively inventive core, with a unique blending of genres that works surprisingly well.

You never really can judge a book by its cover, so read on for the full review of Monday Night Combat.

Monday Night Combat (Xbox Live Arcade)
Developer: Uber Entertainment
Publisher: Microsoft Games Studios
Release date: August 11, 2010

Monday Night Combat is a game show in which genetic clones compete for fabulous cash prizes. The game is a unique blending of the third-person-shooter and tower defense genres, as each team attempts to push its forces to the enemy's "Moneyball" and destroy it for the win.

Each team is backed up by a respawning army of bots, and they have to escort these bots to the Moneyball to deplete its shields. Players can also construct turrets at specified locations to protect their own base. Money is earned with kills, and the cash not only goes towards turrets and their upgrades, but can be spent on personal player enhancements.

The premise is quite brilliant, and works out incredibly well. Deciding which of your skills to enhance, or whether to hold off on skills and create turrets, makes for some cool choices, The game usually becomes one-sided after a while, but the tug-of-war beforehand can be rather exciting and tense. Even if the unique flow of the match doesn't get one's attention, the solid third-person-shooting is still a lot of fun, especially with such a diverse range of classes to choose from.

The game has two modes -- Crossfire and Blitz. Crossfire is the competitive multiplayer described above. Blitz is a co-op mode in which players protect their Moneyball from increasingly powerful waves of AI-spawned bots. There are a variety of different Blitz modes, ranging in number of waves and difficulty, but the general "tower defense meets Team Fortress" play style remains the same throughout.

There are six distinct classes -- the stealthy Assassin, the hardy Tank, the ranged Sniper, the balanced Assault, the powerful Gunner and the Support, who we will get to in a moment. Uber Entertainment did a really good job of making each class feel distinct, with a range of unique abilities, such as the Assassin's invisibility or the Tank's product placement grenades. There is a class to fit every style of play, and even the stereotypical characters feel somewhat unique.

Monday Night Combat is a lot of fun and can get quite addictive, but it does suffer from one major problem -- it's very unbalanced. The Support class, at the time of writing, is broken beyond reason. It's very clear that the developers had a lot of affection for the character, and as such they have made him into a Mary Sue archetype -- combining the strengths of both a medic and an engineer, with none of the weaknesses. He can heal allies, hack enemy turrets, spawn his own super powerful turret, drop instant-kill nukes on enemy heads, and more besides. He doubles the strength of his friends and decimates his enemies. You could have made two whole new classes out of everything Uber gave the Support, and right now he's a potential game breaker.

Other classes suffer from balance issues as well. The Tank is useless in a ranged fight, but is too slow to get close enough to do real damage before better-ranged classes tear him apart, while the Gunner is ludicrously powerful and has no real down side to counter his strength.

The game also lacks variety. Blitz mode has one map, and Crossfire only a meager handful. The lack of variety extends to the game's sound, with MNC's announcer and player characters repeating the same painfully unfunny catchphrases.

It's worth noting that there seem to be a number of connection issues. While the game has host migration, it appears to only work 50% of the time and sometimes won't occur at all. Connections to lobbies frequently terminate, and there's even a glitch where the connection will cut during matchmaking and force players onto a blank screen, from which the only way to escape is by exiting the entire game. When games get started, the are lag-free and tight, but the connection errors are frequent enough to get rather annoying.

It is to Monday Night Combat's great credit, then, that it still manages to be so compelling and fun despite these rather huge flaws. The class imbalance will eventually become tolerable if you can be careful about fighting the powerful characters, and the gameplay is fun enough that one tends not to mind the lack of varied environments.

The game requires one to get used to it, to work around its flaws and find a class that works for them. As players earn cash, they can unlock custom character slots which lets them enhance their chosen class with stat-boosting sponsorships. Once the custom classes are unlocked, the game becomes far more fun to play and comfortable to use. It's just a shame that the cash isn't spent on anything else, and you end up earning huge amounts of money with nothing to spend it on. It would have been cool to be able to visually customize the characters as well.

I actively hated this game when I first started it up. I couldn't understand where the fun was and it looked too broken to enjoy. However, once I found a class I gelled with and learned how best to hide his weaknesses versus the overbearing strengths of some of the other classes, I found that it was incredible fun. It's truly a fine little game, but one that requires you to do a little bit of work up front.

Monday Night Combat has its flaws, but ultimately it's a game that looks great, has a lot of heart, and provides a fun, unique, and undeniably addictive multiplayer experience that's well worth the fifteen bucks. With more balancing and a great variety of things to do, this could be an absolutely stellar title. As it exists, however, Monday Night Combat is most definitely the start of something very, very good.

Score: 7.5 -- Good (7s are solid games that definitely have an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.)

Just picked this up today and have been very happy. It is an interesting take on tower defense and the classes actually feel pretty balanced for the most part. Very addictive.

I was trying to decide if I should pick this up or not! ... I am now thoroughly convinced.

Not to mention the fact that a shizz-load of my actual gaming friends have picked this up and have been playing for the past week or so now. :-/

If only I could pull myself away from my PS3 to hop on and pick this up. *Sigh* Any chance y'all are giving away free codes? ;-D *Hint, hint*

I know it's a cliche to make Team Fortress 2 comparisons, but MAN - do those character models look seriously reminiscent of TF2 classes. I see at least three similar-looking class designs - Demoman, Heavy, and Sniper - in the above images. (Also, isn't the header image just a wee bit, uh, pandery?)

I mean, I don't care. I just didn't expect the similarities to be so... overt.

This game looks cool, but I don't have a 360. I will say that reviewers of class-based games should generally refrain from commenting on "class balance"...because nobody is good at the game yet, and they always have weird ideas about which classes are overpowered.
I remember in the early days of KZ2, when people thought the shotgun was godly... Now it is a serious handicap, not because they nerfed it (it is pretty much the same), but because people learned how to correctly fire with the m82. People thought the LMG sucked which couldn't be further from the truth. People thought bots were underpowered...
It takes time for the community to learn the game and that is when you realize what classes are too strong/ too weak. What is overpowered for "noobs" is usually completely different than what is overpowered for veterans.

Yeah, wasn't impressed by the demo. Just couldn't muster up enough energy to really be excited by the game. maybe I'm getting tired of games like this. But there has to be more of a point for me to play yet another shooter. classes don't interest me much since you'll only stick with one class that fits you best.

"actively hated this game when I first started it up. I couldn't understand where the fun was and it looked too broken to enjoy" is basically how I felt also.

maybe when it goes down in price?

If you have Team Fortress for PC, give this trial run on XBLA, you get 30 free minutes. If you really find it's a huge difference and you like it, buy it! If you don't, keep playing TF2.

If you have TF2 for XBOX...Just buy this game. Valve NEVER updates TF2 on Xbox, and this is a much better game than the un-updated garbage that TF2 on Xbox is.

Also, the developer is well aware of the balance issues. They'll fix them in the first title update, I can almost guarantee it.

Support's balance issues aside, this is one of the most surprisingly fun games I''ve played in a while. I mean, at first by looking at it, I wrote it off cause it didn't look interesting.

The biggest problem this game has is the maps. NEEDS MORE.

I have to say this may be one of the best XBLA games I've ever played, seriously for a 15 dollar title it delivers more than the money's worth... I haven't stopped playing it since wednesday.. AMAZING! And it plays totally different from tf2 and most shooters on the market

I love this game, I can't stop playing it. It is very different from most other MP games, a great mixture of TF2 with it's own take that is unique.

The support class is very strong in MNC, but if you have a capable sniper and assassin on your team, this can nullify a good support player for the most part.

Gunners can also destroy support turrets very easily.

The problem (though it shouldn't really be a problem) is you need a balanced team that knows how to play their roles. Each class has another class that they can usually dominate. The sniper always dominates me when I'm a support, he can kill me with one shot kills and keep me at bay with his ice bombs. This paper, rock, scissors system is true for every class.

So if you have a team that doesn't have certain classes playing, you will always be trumped by a more balanced team. I recommend learning to play three classes really well (I'm gunner, support and assault) and then choosing the one that no one else is playing at the beginning of the round. You'll notice people don't pick their classes the second they join, because they are waiting to see which classes their team is going to be short on. Then they will fill that gap.

I admit the game will need some balancing (and as I'm loving the support guy, I'll be sad :P). But I give huge kudos to Uber for creating a multiplayer game that rewards gameplay in a way to make balanced team play so rewarding. I hope this game is a hit and we can look forward to future updates and expansions.

I can't wait for this game to get more maps and maybe nerf the Support guy a bit. If I'm going positive, there's a problem...because I absolutely suck. I've been using Sniper because Support just felt too cheap.

Still, it's insanely fun, perfectly priced (there are only a handful of maps but no game plays out the same way), and had me up past midnight more than once.

By the way, how is MNC a league? There's only two teams, ever. A league of two teams?

Mascot, Cast. I don't know why Jim chose that image of all images as the header, but whatever.

I love this game. Definitely worth the $15 I spent. And if you're comparing it to TF2, you haven't spent enough (if any) time with the game. Even the look is more like Ratchet & Clank than TF2. (And black ≠ Demoman, guys. He's assault. I definitely see some Heavy & Sniper influence though, but that's all aesthetic.)

I too was suspicious of this game due to it's own derivative marketing strategy but I have succumb to it's charms. I was peer pressured into buying it once my free trial ran out and I don't regret it one bit.

I would argue that the Support is a fantastic class, but not "broken". It's very, very good but doesn't have any ranged attacks and therefore gets destroyed by both Gunners and Snipers. Every class has some really great abilities and can seem overpowered if controlled by a great player.

I suck at this game but I find I sometimes do alright. After reading this though I guess I should play Support more as I find I do alright only with the Assault. The Tank is alright at times, mostly more for enemy bots and I dunno but I got destroyed as the Gunner, even with the deployed shot.

Ultimately I find this game way too chaotic at times and this is totally a game that rewards opportunist kills.

I gave it a demo on 360 and it was kinda fun. Even after my 30 minutes were up I kept trying it out on blitz. I can't say I saw any of the balance issues, but only playing for 30 minutes doesn't give you a good insight into the minutia of a game to be honest...

It seemed like fun, but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to buy it. The only real thing that popped out at me is how soft the controls felt. Maybe its just me but it feels like there's not much feedback (on screen, audio, or anything) after doing anything (shooting, jumping, abilities, etc). Maybe I just had the volume down too low or the vibration function off or something... [shrug].
