I'll be checking his out soon. By the by, hows Mega Man ZX Advent?
But I always thought the games were pretty easy. I mean, I suck at Mega Man and I could beat them, so...
I have these carts for the GBA but I don't have a GBA. I will buy again just becuase these games are too good to pass!
@The Silent Protagonist- I really liked Mega Man ZX, but in some ways it's a little too ambitious for it's own good. There are "human" forms you can take on that don't really do anything, and a map system that tries to feel like Metroid but in the end is just a chore.
Mega Man ZX Advent fixed most of that though. Both are definitely good games, but if you have to pick one, go with Advent.
Advent also features an 8-bit mode that feels sort of like a prequel to Mega Man 9. Same developers and whatnot.
I knew there was a reason I needed to go back and finish that game. For some reason that final stage always kicks my ass...
They're definitely difficult, but they're not any worse than the Mega Man X games. Where the difficulty comes from is trying to get high rankings on the games' levels. The games will start off a little rough until you get certain power ups and life increases, at which point the game gets a lot easier, but you automatically get low ranks on missions and miss out on other power ups.
So to get high ranks and get cool extra special attacks and such, you have to not use power ups which make the game easier, and then do well on the actual levels (meaning don't get hit, clear levels fast, etc). That's what is difficult.
I picked this up day one. I played and beat them all back in the day, but there was no way I was going to miss a chance to show my love for the Zero series.
Jonathan, your review couldn't be more spot-on.

Also, you can play as "Model a" in the main game as well. Genius.

Now I still have to hunt down a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Heck with those icky looking DS and PSP versions...
I wish they'd slap all of the Battle Networks onto a cart like this...
had mega man 9 and 10 been swapped with the zeros for a handheld/console release, I think most people would have been happier. that's just my take on it.
I love ds games, one of my favorite consoles, but I hate playing handhelds and even if I buy them, I usually emulate them on pc so I can play with a controller. :|
I'll definitely be picking this up.
For that reason I liked your review Holmes. Great work.
I have been a huge Mega Man fan for almost 20 years now and although I really did dig the Legends games a bit and a few other random ones here and there, my real love for the franchise has strictly been for the main line (including 9-10!), and the X series (mostly X-X4 though). I've always heard about the Zero games over the years and people have often recommended me them, but the interest was still never really there. But I'm always a sucker for compilation releases like this, especially for Capcom (on top of owning most of the carts I have most of the collections on the GCN/PS2, lol) ... so I was getting pretty curious about this.
After reading the review I do feel like I'm fairly convinced, I have been missing out on this series for too long. The challenge sounds pleasing as well, as I was able to 200/200 MM9-MM10 and can get through all those easily, so that'll be interesting to see how these are for me in terms of difficulty.
Nice stuff. I'm pretty lazy with caring about reviews thesedays but this one randomly caught my eye and it was worth it.
Kind of a fifth bonus to the game. :D
However if you have a DS with a messed up R-Trigger it could be frustrating to play...=(
I wonder if Legends 3 would work on DS...Dont care much for sequels except that.
Although... it gives the game a certain replay value, since you will want all the power-ups (and believe me, you will need it).
But, for me, the worst one is Zero 4, with that collection stuff that you have to do to TRY to make power-ups. The double-jump and the high-jump, the must-haves of this game can only be aquired through collecting the mortal remains of your enemies, mixing them up and hoping for Light's sake that they will give what you want.
I'm such a Mega Man(original series) purist that I haven't really given these games much attention. Although your stunning review makes me want to give these games another shot.
Because a man with a laser blade that slashes things into tiny bits is fking RAD.
And FYI, I have finished all Zero games, love them to bits. :)
Also, would ask for a spoiler warning on that 1-4 "Character of Zero" change, but eh. It may be major (because Zero is light as fuck on plot) but it's not as if I was making any progress in Zero 2 anyways.
Finally, even though Zed is dabomb, I have already had said bomb set-us-upped. So I won't buy them again.
I'm curious to try and play it on the DS (glad you can adjust the buttons), with the exception of the very first time I played Z1, this series was made to be played on the tv via the Gamecube's GBP. Better controller for the action and the games look great at that size!
No, seriously. Buy them. Now.
By the time Zero 1 hit, everyone knoew who Mega Man was, and a lot of people had gotten sick of him.
These days though, nostalgia is Mega Man's greatest weapon. When teamed with the upper limits fo what the PS3/360 can to, that weapons could do some serious damage.
I wonder how well a new Mega Man game that looked like those Pixar-style renders of Mega Man 2 characters would sell?
@ Press X to Smack My B* Up- Spoiler warning? Sorry, I don't see it. I was pretty darn vague about how Zero actually goes through his character development, and how things end for him at the end.
Trust me, if you think that was a spoiler, you have no idea how much stuff I didn't mention.
