Review: KontrolFreek FPS Freek EPIC photo

With Gears of War 3 launching tonight, all those fratboys obsessed with hulking masses of gun-toting meat will want to splurge excessive amounts of money on trinkets and paraphernalia.

Fortunately, KontrolFreek has 'em covered with the FPS Freek EPIC, a new set of thumbsticks that click onto the Xbox 360's controller and claim to help you play better. KontrolFreek has teamed up with Microsoft to start providing its products at retail for the first time, and we got our hands on the new Gears-flavored enhancements to test them for ourselves.

FPS Freek EPIC
Manufacturer: KontrolFreek
Released: September 13, 2011
MSRP: $13.99

The FPS Freek EPIC has been designed specifically to work with Gears of War, and is definitely for hardcore fans of the series. Even the aesthetics have Epic's manly franchise in mind, designed as they are with the famous Gears "Skull" icon etched into the center. As with the original logo, each skull is surrounded by a cog, and the cog's teeth are raised to create extra grip, which I feel is quite a nice touch.

Using thick rubber with a lot of friction to it, there's an impressive amount of tactility on the nubs, so your sweaty palms shouldn't slide off the rigid sticks no matter how hard you jostle. The Freek enhancements snap onto the existing sticks quite easily and hold firm once fixed, but can be removed easily if you tug with enough vigor. The hole at the base of the Freek is tight, but flexible enough to be penetrated by both Xbox 360 and PS3 sticks, meaning your peripheral can safely have several partners.

The extra height gained by the Freek takes some getting used to, and may feel quite odd to those who have never experimented before, but after just a minute or two it starts to feel surprisingly natural. I've tried it with Gears of War 3, and found that it didn't harm my gaming ability at all. I was still able to get my token two kills before getting shotgunned in the face by some rolling arsehole, so it's definitely business as usual with the FPS Freek.

That, however, presents the biggest problem with the add-on. It felt so much like business as usual that I can't really say it enhanced my gaming prowess. Sure, I have something thicker and longer in my hands, but I can't say the pleasure was heightened. The added length claims to allow players to make smaller motions when targeting and moving, but personally I didn't quite feel a dramatic enough change in the way I played my game. The extra grip was welcome, and using the sticks felt shockingly comfortable, but comfort and usability are the only things that stuck out to me. My ability to track and hit targets felt the same as it always has.

It should also be noted that, while the FPS Freek EPIC does feel good with Gears of War, I had to take the sticks off when playing other games. I tried the peripheral with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, for example, and they felt less comfortable, not least for the fact that one clicks the left stick to sprint in that game, and the FPS Freek isn't quite as adept at letting me do that.

The FPS Freek EPIC is a cool little extra, and the comfort alone makes one far more able to cope with an evening of Gears of War 3 multiplayer. Those looking to gain an upper hand on the competition, however, won't quite find their abilities augmented to any extreme degree with this. The principal of extra height is definitely in play, but I just don't think it's dramatic enough to make a player significantly more threatening.

Due to its visual design and limited applications, the FPS Freek EPIC is definitely a peripheral for the truly dedicated Gearheads out there. Those people will find plenty of use for it, but the more casual player can safely stick with a virgin controller.

I don't always grip my sticks, but when I do, I prefer to have something thicker and longer in my hands.

This will be my excuse when I do badly on multiplayer.

It seems like the add on would only be neccessary for the right analog stick.. and for FPSs, allowing you to turn the sensitivity up and still maintain a good steady aim. As far as this article goes, your troll is showing jim.

I have a pair of these (sadly, not ones with any Cool Kid designs on them). The extra length allows for some finer movements in my opinion. They aren't going to make you magically, exponentially better/more accurate than you already are, but they seemed to help me in games like Battlefield and Cutie on Duty.

Plus they're like $10, so the price of admission isn't too high to take a chance. ...well, the ones with waaay sick designs on them are like $15. So just stick with a "vanilla" pair.

I've tried similar add-ons and while not very effective in Gears of War, I've found my Call of Duty experience was enhanced by them. Not by any great degree, mind you, but they definitely helped on higher sensitivities, helping me turn around more swiftly then making precise aiming. Gears really doesn't strike me as the kind of game that needs these.

You have to give em a little more time Jim. I didn't notice anything at first but I thought "because I bought em- I might as well use em." played with for about 2-3 weeks then went over to a mate's house. Picking up and using the sticks without em at that point you could really tell the clear difference in freedom of movement.

I can't play without them now and usually end up turning my controller sensitivity up normally which does allow for quick turning and precise aiming. Just takes time is all.

"The FPS Freek EPIC has been designed specifically to work with Gears of War"

OK, now that was funny.

I have a set of the non-EPIC FPS type, and they work pretty well. It gives you a little extra leverage, which gives you a little extra control. Takes awhile to get used to, though.

They're good if you want indented sticks on your PS3 rather than mushroom sticks, as well. I personally prefer the mushroom tops because I play with the tips of my thumbs, but it's not really a big deal for me either way.

These nubs are great for the ps3 controller, the added grip helps my thumbs from sliding off the thumbsticks.

It's definitely not "HOLY SHIT I'M GODLY NOW!", but i certainly feel they help, and are very pleasant to use.

@Mr Andy Dixon:
Just wait. There should be an MLG controller coming from Mad Catz that not only has concave sticks, but also has the offset placement like a 360 controller. I can say with absolute confidence that I will use my PS3 more if I can ditch the DS3.

Stick with a virgin controller? Some of us prefer our controllers to have be a bit broken in and have some experience. I mean, I don't want to remembered as their first one. That's just too much pressure man.

as a person who finds most sticks to high I would never use it, I would have liked the ps3 sticks for example to be about 3mm shorter so this would be a complete mismatch for me. I also never really play fps games with a controller. If I play them on console I fake my keyboard and mouse as controller using my laptop which works really well.

I love reading Jimmyx's posts. I think they are hilarious, and the dude is clearly having a bit of fun. He has found a way to make everyone so angry despite very obviously being a gimmick poster. If he were actually a 12 year old Gears fanboy, why in gods name would he be on destructoid. He'd be on IGN or Gametrailers or something.

Simply put: Never change, Jimmyx. Never change.

These look like a perfect solution to an analog stick whose rubber casing has worn off. Going to get the cheaper, non-Gears version for myself and a friend, much cheaper than replacing the whole controller (which we have both had to do once already.. I guess we just play 'em hard)
