Jim, you've allayed my fears and I'll be adding this to my Christmas list!
Amen. I loved Oblivion and Fallout, but the engine needs to be taken out behind the back of the house and shot. Along with Kotick and forced multiplayer in good single-player games.
This is what I'm afraid of. Obsidian really screws the pooch when it comes to technically refining their games.
Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if a large handful of players encounter multiple game erasing/ending glitches, which will really detract from the fun.
Anyways, great review Jim! I'll be picking it up soon, and crossing my fingers!

Embargo... lol
I sunk 1,000 hours into Oblivion before my Xbox was connected to the internet to be patched...I can handle buggy. And 3,000 more hours since, if you wished to know. 4,000 hours of Oblivion.
Fallout 3 was a fun 60 hours, but I saw no reason to replay it other than story differences. New Vegas sounds like it might have more varied gameplay. I'll be picking it up.
I loved Fallout 3, but for some reason I just haven't been excited for New Vegas since its announcement. Glad to hear its good, if buggy. Maybe its just because I'm pining for the next Elder Scrolls game instead.
Not sure about the humour, that might just be me, but I though Fallout 3 had the right ratio between apocalyptic bleakness and laughs.
I think that there is an ingrained fear in me after my play through of Fallout 1 where I learned that taking your time essentially dooms you to the worst possible ending scenarios.
Having said that, assuming I end up 'getting' Fallout 3, i'll definitely be looking into jumping over to New Vegas somewhere down the line. Good review Jim.
- So true, yet so sad. I've been playing for about five hours from my PS3, and I have already in that short time encountered a glitch involving the vats death sequence occurring during normal kills. No game breakers yet though.
Sounds like a semi-Oblivion, the game in which I spent half a year immersed inside.
I can't wait to get inside [i]New Vegas[/]
I can't wait to get inside Wayne Newton.
Only thing that pisses me off is I got the PC version through Steam, and they waited until yesterday to announce that the DLC was 360 exclusive, at least when it starts releasing.
Oh well, at least I can install mods and add new music to listen to on my Pip-Boy.
All the same, this has me relieved about my pre-order.
You pretty much covered what has had me dreading and excited about New Vegas: the crap engine from Fallout 3/Oblivion and the amazing story/characters/atmosphere, etc. Despite the drawbacks, I loved Fallout 3 enough to know I can tough through the crap again to enjoy what is there to enjoy.
Thankfully, I'm too poor right now to be running out and buying New Vegas right after release like I did with Fallout 3, so maybe they can fix it some before I finally buy it.
I've not alot to say about the gameplay, It's FO3 but more for all intents and purposes. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. (Line Break)
I don't think you can justify anything more than an 8 for a game that ships with random lock ups common enough to distract you from your game and require regular saving. As consoles that are getting more like PC's every generation, it's unreasonable to never expect a crash, but if it's a notable issue, it's poor coding and you should realisticly subtract that from the score. You're reviewing this version, not a patched and fixed version, (which might never happen, but probably will). (Line Break) You do a reasonable job of making the glitches clear, so no further complaints from me. Except moar troll bayt next time.
That said though, New Vegas sounds like it might finally be worth all the annoyances. I always noticed how unfunny Fallout 3 was so I'm glad to hear New Vegas is bringing the humor back. To be honest, that alone might convince me to check the game out.
Then again, Vanquish comes out today too. I guess I'll wait for that review and see what happens.
Actually, it's the kind of nonsense you should expect from an Obsidian game. Anyone experienced with their earlier releases; NWN, KOTOR2 and Alpha Protocol know that they're infamous for their glitches and bugs (far worse than anything Bethesda could do).
You'd think they would get the bugs/glitches out of the way when they're dealing with an already finished engine and concept.
Jim tears apart other games for obvious flaws, and rightly so, but this he gives a 9.0 even though the game is broken?
Shenanigans.
If companions didn't vanish into thin air between sections, it didn't crash, fps wouldn't drop at times, loading times wouldn't get increasingly bigger as you play it, it's the second best RPG this year after ME2. Having said that, people who didn't like Fallout 3 because they are Fallout 1-2 fanboys will perhaps like NV better, but not necessarily.
Just make sure you stock up on snacks and a lot of free time if you are going into it!
glad for obsidian that this came out good. they havent made a generally acclaimed game since the black isle "fallout".
It was worse than a U.P. spring, I tell ya, eh?
