...Wait, he's already been on here. Numerous times it seems.
I have to say, Jim, that your reviews have really improved. I like the emphasis on the actual game mechanics and game design as opposed to the focus on aesthetic and fashion choices, such as music and clothing. I like knowing ahead of the time how the game plays, what problems there are, what works, what doesn't work, and just all about the game in and of itself before I purchase it - where as before (like I even commented at the time), it felt like you were ripping games based on characters, personalities, music, and other things which had no relevancy to the game itself (in my opinion).

I just wish you were more offensive in these latest reviews!

All jokes aside, I at least notice the changes (and I'm sure others do too), and I do appreciate them. I find your new reviews are some of the most insightful, whether or not I agree with them in total - at the end of the day, I can see whether or not I'm going to actually want to spend time playing these games before I put down money for them.

I find reviews like these interesting and it's nice to see the score actually translate from the text (contrary to IGN's reviews).

Though, I find it a bit troubling that everyone would cancel their pre-orders because of this (or any other specific review). Don't people want to form their own opinions? Has game reviewing boiled down to nothing but consumer guidance?

I wish something could be done about these shitty fucking comments constantly saturating Jims reviews. Seriously. I'd say get someone to moderate the reviews and remove all these little tossbags who do nothing but bitch and moan because they don't agree with Jim, but I know that would be opening a can of worms.

I don't know what you could do, but EVERY SINGLE REVIEW is filled with this horseshit. omg jim stop reviewing games, you suck, you are fat, you are a hack, you are wrong, 4.5, oh so X game is better than X, dont review based on your opinion, bias, biased, blah dee fucking blah fuck blah.

I want to read insightful comments, opinions and discussions on the game being reviewed, not waste my time scrolling through a bunch of gametrailer reject assfuck douchebaggery for the nuggets of intelligence. It's like trying to find a fleck of gold in a pile of dogshit.

So sorry your hard work gets suffocated by the vomit of a league of absolute twats, Jim. Just remember there are people who appreciate what you do. Keep it up.

I don't own an 360, and I don't care for Fable.

But, Jim?

Please go be fat somewhere else.

Mr. Sterling:

That's a pretty harsh attack. Can you give examples?

I'm just glad I got the second one for free YAY glitchy site. I wasn't planning on getting this one. It's still good to know I'm not missing much back to Fallout New Vegas.

I appreciate your reviews Jim. Destructoid has become my main review site because too many reviewers let average games get above average scores.

I registered only to say this:

Why does this site always have such shit reviews? It doesn't even sound like you actually played the game and not one of your opinions are in line with any of the other credible review sites. I know being intentionally inflammatory is a good way to get hits, but at the end of the day you just shoot your credibility in the foot. Like now.

Great review - although negative, I feel the truth in there will be glossed over by some reviewers wanting to give the game a favourable score just because

Question is do I still buy? I loved Fable II but after hearing a similar story from another reviewer I begining to wonder if this will be a waste of my pennies

Jim's reviews are getting more and more pissy, I think. There are ways to covey an opinion without saying "its sucks and there is no way I can be wrong." >_>;;

Let me tell you something, I might be missing the idea of Fable, but when I tried Fable II when my roommate lent me his XBOX360, I did not dig the gameplay mechanics of "choice" and "communication". I think there is something weird about earning respect by simply using gestures like arm waving or a raspberry.

I think I know what Peter tries to intend all the time with the epic build-up of confrontation and becoming part of history, but all the complex and fragile good/evil mechanic does not seem to work for this in my opinion.

Maybe I need to play the first one to fully "understand" the beauty behind it.

I liked Fable 2. Il pick this one up when it drops in price. Im dissapointed this isnt going to be as good as I thought it would be. Oh well!

Funny who you said that the first on is still the best in the comments. Funny because i and a lot of people feel you're right, and Molyneux decides to get even farther from it not closer to it. But changing inventory in the game like this into a location is the reason alone to hate this game, i guess

Meh; this is one game series I couldn't care less about review scores for - it'll be a day one purchase; I rarely agree with Jim Sterlings opinion...

In all honesty, I don't really understand Peter Molyneux. In every interview I've seen him give he seems like this creative force in the industry and forward thinker, eschewing dynamic gameplay concepts and character interaction methods, but what has he released that even comes close to this? I played Fable in the day and it was nice (limited but fun), but all I've heard since (Jim's review here included) is that the Fable sequels are inane slog-fests. It's kinda underwhelming :(

Release something magnificent man!

I'm a big fan of the Fable series, I loved 1 & 2 for what they were (nice-looking, brightly coloured adventure games, that also satisfied my love of upgrading weapons) but there's too many Triple-A titles coming out that I'll be spending my money on instead - Thanks Jim!

With a few more reviews like this, I reckon this'll be prime for a post-Christmas pricedrop - and I'll definitely pick it up then.

wow, an honest reviewer. THANK YOU. i cant say how many games i've purchased and been disappointed with due to over-hyped / over-rated reviews. I genuinely appreciate the honesty in this review. I'll skip this game now as the even more streamlined RPG than Fable 2 is a huge turn off. thnx again.

also tho, fable 2's menu's were awful. i was hoping they would have fixed those and made it easier to access quests and items/inventory. this new menu system seems even more difficult, i want to be able to access my items and equip things on the fly, is that really too much to ask?

Fucking called it.

I expected this to happen after what I saw in Fable II. Actually just a couple hours before this review I posted on the xbox forums:

I'm just worried about the story. Will the story just end as you become King? Will there be no real antagonist after that point?

Hopefully it's good. Not just some moral decision crap like "will I destroy this village to build a new statue" or "will I help that poor family or just burn the house down" sort of stuff.

Peter has been obsessed with making an "emotional game" for ages now but he forgets the basics for the sake of a few new features.

It's like they think up a few quirky features and forget about the rest of the game. It's even more dissapointing when you think they had built off of Fable 2. If that's the case they should have tweaked the gameplay and then made it much, much bigger.

I love it when Mr. Sterling reviews the games, because then I know I'm getting a geniune, honest-to-God review rather than always getting a lackluster bandwagon score of 8 or higher from every other stinkin' website, even though there are clearly one too many overlooked flaws.

It looks to me as though these obvious and common flaws still remain neglected, and that no way justifies a high score. This review explains the good and bad, and from reading it thoroughly, a 5.5 is fair.

By the way, this isn't sarcasm. I'm serious.

Well I'm definitely still getting this: pretty much every game you've reviewed lately Jim I've had opposite opinions on.

At the midnight release, I ended up swapping my pre-order for Fable III for Rock Band 3. I think I made the right decision.

I still think Fable: TLC is the best game in the series (a solid 9 for me). I was fairly disappointed with Fable II (a 7.5, in my scale of awesome) but still had fun playing it.

I'll definitely be getting the 3rd one because one review isn't enough to make me give up on a game series I actually like. I appreciate the honesty of Jim Sterling's reviews, but this time I think he focused way too much on what the game could've been instead of on what it actually is. Reviewing a game based on promises and hype almost always guarantees a negative review, regardless of franchise, genre, etc.

Can't wait to get this game!

Once again Jim gets his hard on while appearing to be "edgy" and "hip" by dishing out the "truth".

I used to like this website before the dark times, before Jim.

Why oh why am I not surprised. I saw this coming. Fable 1 was simplistic, Fable 2 was very patronising and it looks like Fable 3 is treating it's players like "special" kids.

While I disagree with most of the negatives in this review, I couldn't disagree more with the Sanctuary/Menus point. Anyone who's played Fable 1 or 2 knows the menus were so annoying and hard to navigate. The Sanctuary really solves this problem and makes everything so easily accessable. I'd say it's the biggest improvement from 2 to 3.

I find it interesting that you think Fable 3 is a step backwards in the series. Having played the game to completion and having started a new character I think it is the best Fable game in the series and Top 5 games of the year so far.

I was actually telling a couple of people how much I enjoyed the new Sanctuary system which you seem to be so opposed to. Everything is integrated into the game with as few actual menus as possible. If the Sanctuary took a long time to load then I might understand the complaints but it pops up in a flash when I hit the start button and the game allows you to switch between any of the rooms with a single press of the d-pad. The virtual representation of different clothing and weapons also makes it much easier to manage that large amount of items, in my opinion. Instead of scrolling down a giant fucking list of 100 pieces of clothing, I can view 5 sets at any given time, organized by category, making it very easy to find what I am looking for.

I also thought the map system was much better than previous versions of the game. It only takes a second to get to the map, which then gives you a full overview of everything in Albion. You can fast travel to any given location or you can magnify and take a look at all the quests, shops, real estate and general layout of each area. The overall map also shows how many quests, silver keys, gold keys, and gnomes can be found in each region. Add to that the fact that you can manage all of your real estate and shops directly from the map rather walking to each and every building is great when you own next to every building in Albion and need to repair building or adjust prices.

I also really enjoyed how the Guild Seal system worked. Rather than separating all of your experience across 4 categories the game gives you one number and allows you to spend it however you choose. I used magic plenty in Fable 2 but at a certain point, I didn't need the experience anymore because I had the spells that I needed. Fable 3 allows me to use my magic as much as I want, while still allowing me to build up my melee skill for when I need it.

I can agree with you on a couple points, though. The light trail is still an issue and can be a source of frustration if I didn't already know where I was going. That and the issue of the dog walking in circles when leading me to a dig spot and sometimes taking several minutes to find it need to be fixed. But, I find these to be mostly minor issues as they only happened to me sparingly in Fable 3. I also agree that the final boss was totally fucking lame. Especially considering how amazing the game was when you go through the dark cave and the desert, that shit was great.

I think I'll enjoy this game like I enjoyed Fable II. That one had its flaws too, but never stopped me from enjoying it :)

Too bad it sounds like this one still doesn't seem to live up to the full potential though.

"Even though you're royalty, you'll still spend most of your time farting at people to win their approval and performing mind-numbing QTE minigames in order to earn cash."

Did you watch the developer diaries by any chance!? This is LITERALLY the exact opposite of what Molyneux said Fable III would be in one of them, and trashed on Fable II because of it.

I knew it!

Aw, that's too bad. I thought the first Fable was alright, but I really enjoyed the second. I'll still give this one a shot, but it is disappointing to hear they've toned it down.

Unsurprisingly, Fable III seems to be getting lots of mixed reviews.

I played a little bit of it at Eurogamer and really liked what I saw, so I'll probably still pick it up. I'll probably be just as disappointed with it as I was with Fable II, but that's alright.

I do believe that people are too used to seeing games that are hyped before launch getting high review scores from other outlets who seem to believe the game was entitled to the high score before they even played it. Jim calls them like he sees them. IGN calls them however won't lose them ad revenue, and Gamespot calls them however the game-maker pays them to call it.

Reading your reviews I often find myself disagreeing with you, Jim (sometimes completely, sometimes just in part), but as intelligent people know it has to be like this (i disagree with other reviewers' opinion too, with my friends.. hell, even with my girlfriend, and she makes me pay for that!). If there's one thing we have in common is the idea that a review is just a personal opinion and that opinion must be taken as a "tool" to judge if we're interested in that specific game or not. Now, here's the thing: why don't you guys add a box or a column with "another take" on the game written by someone else to Destructoid's reviews? It could be useful, don't you think? From the comparison of two or more opinions one can have a better overview.
