Probably will get this version for 20 bucks at some point. Still waiting for a Dead Rising game that actually addresses all of my major gripes with the first.
some parts of the game that are not as difficult? the mercs since their gunshots don't knock you back or stun you as often, but they're still deadly. also the looters (even though there are more) will not take all your items and clothes and dump you in a bathroom if they hit you with the spray paint and you fail to get away from them, they will take some of your money (and keep taking it until you break free) and your current held item, but even then if you kill the one who took the item and money, you get it right back.
Oh, and survivors got stupider this time around, they can't break free from zombie grapples until their health is near gone.
Overall, it feels the same, but completely different at the same time. You'll find it pleasantly more challenging if you're the "GAMES ARE TOO EASY!" masochist, and more frustrating if you're not. But if it ever gets too much, you can just stay in sandbox mode and enjoy the game all the same.
Great review, by the way.
Given that the game is only a bunch of packaged together little twists on the original DR2, set in a "what if" story, your almost better off just getting DR2 for cheaper, having the real story, and if you want sandbox mode, just not do any cases and hit continue -which, lets be honest, gets VERY boring after a few hours. Considering the item placement is the same, in all the same environments (minus the new zone), there's no actual replay value for those who's gone through DR2 multiple times unless you count the throw away cut scenes that tell a story that not many care all that much about. And doesn't really warrant this purchase when you can supplement DR2 with Case:Zero and Case: West as well (granted they're treated as their own arcade games, and Case: West might have a possibility of being connected to this somehow). Either way, I can see fans of the series, at least after the rose colored glasses of Sandbox mode come off, feeling pretty ripped off by what they've played (again).
I feel a bit offended about elements of Off The Record. In ways, this is clearly the Dead Rising 2 the team should have made first, what with the improved load times and Sandbox Mode that so many people beg for when they play these games. And it's got a brand new zone to boot.
Why couldn't I have that when I bought the game the first time?
Lack of online mode is a big plus anyway.
If you liked DR1 and skilled DR2 then you will like DR2:OTR. Of course you can just wait for DR2:DR1:OTR which is where they put Chuck into the first game.
Oh, and DR2:OTC (Off The Charts) where they replace the main character with Chris Brief.
Of course DR2:OTC:DRM has Chuck back trying to fill his Over the Counter meds and Durable Medical Equipment but his insurance won't cover it without prior authorization. But his doctor is a zombie!
I personally can't wait for DR2 vs Marvel Zombies where Frank and Chuck together team up with Megaman and Arthur (from Ghosts and Goblins) to kill Marvel Zombies... Phoenix Wright zombie is an unlockable character. Color Palette DLC will be extra $$$...
TIR was removed? I played that shit to hell, it was fun. I'm not sure if I ever ended up unlocking the Terror is Reality Outfit. Got close to it, though. Damn, I should give the original Dead Rising 2 a re-run, but probably no one is playing it. Steam, throw a sale now, I need more people to play with!
Also I don't care what some people say, I liked Chuck and he was a solid protagonist
Then I'll buy.
Was waiting to get DR2 so I can see what happened before case west (I refuse to play it without playing DR2 first, bought it on sale :3 )
So I guess with this new one out I might want to wait, or maybe this will mean the regular DR2 will be one sale and I can grab this one for the fun of it when its in the bargain bin.
