That means A) You're a retard and B) If you can't afford videogames; you have shitty priorities in your life and should fix those before you spend money on such luxuries.
Spot-on review Jim.
It's that sought of thing that makes me wait for it to hit the bargain bin. Why should I have to download a patch to make the game work properly?
'Cos of that time you raped that kid.
Its a Techland game as stated, so it would probably be all over the place in quality.
Damn you sound mad! I suspect you've take that dudes comment fully at face value.
Its not retarded to buy games that get good scores across the board (or from trusted sources like destructoid) but you clearly use common sense along with that.
Chill out because you appear to be raging.
Mind I'm not criticizing the more technical issues that seem to follow through to the final product which seem to exist even in the alpha footages, such as fatal clipping problems, attacks that don't connect and difficulty spikes. They can easily be fixed if Techland really wanted to.
My point is that everything that Dead Island have to offer, I already have two or three games that does those things better. Just name it; Borderlands, Dead Rising, Rockstar titles, L4Ds...
Techland, if only that the narration of the game matches the controversial trailer you put up... Much as I'd like to give you my money, I'd have to say I'm glad I passed on the pre-order.
Hmmm. Seems to me Dead Island was a good idea badly executed. I think that probably sums it up for me. I'll pass.
Who knows, I might get it when the price drops (Aussie prices) and the bugs get addressed, but to be honest... I'm poor. It's not happening.
Great review none-the-less, Jim-my-man. I want to see your Deadly Premonition review.
as Manthai already suggested, i think you've been too harsh. where people have said that the review made them want the game more, it's probably because what they had been hoping for was a brainless zombie kill/loot fest, and now they know that's what they'll get. i can't say i wasn't hoping for the emotional thrill ride that the trailer suggested but i've been on board for zombie brain smashing from day 1 too!
while ev777's comment did make me smile, i don't think it's bullshit to skip a 7/10 game when one of the best games of this generation just released (DEHR) and we're weeks away from the AAA release season. i personally can't afford to buy every decent game on release, but there is a place for 7/10 games in my collection, and they usually come via the bargain bin.
I'll probably eBay eventually. Persona 4, Minecraft and Skyrim should see me out of this year, though.
My comment was geared toward the sheep mentality that, without fail, will inundate review posts on games that come in under an 8 with; "This saves me $60" or "Looks like I'm saving $60" or "Thanks for saving me $60!" But that is a whole other subject entirely, the people that base their purchases on a single review. I'll save you the pain and write a cblog about it or something. :P
With the $10 price hike this generation, I've made an effort to research games to the point of obsession, so that by the time they near release, I have an absolute clear picture of whether that game will be mine(day one or otherwise) or not! Videos, previews, reviews, I consume information on a game like Galactus does planets.
I also just bought Deus Ex(I'm still on my first playthrough, AMAZING game) and my next major purchases will be BF3, Skyrim and Saints Row 3. That's it. Just 3 "AAA" titles. So, I can most certainly fit a 'decent' game like this in my purchases.
@Bakewell:
Not even a little bit!
::coughBastioncough::
I spent a while writing a bit of a vindictive reply but that "I ain't even mad" chick is so gorgeous its defused the whole thing for me so...
The nice version:
Most people who see the 7 and dismiss the game aren't missing out on anything. If it were that perfect for them they would have read the review and/or preordered it already. $2600US of games are already subjectively better this year, choosing from that pile is MORE LIKELY to give them enjoyment. That doesn't mean they should never venture outside of that, but insulting those that don't is a bit dumb. This is because in all likeliness they have more amazing pieces of entertainment vying for their attention than they have money/time for, so are better off choosing out of those than sifting through the "good" ones.
So to answer your question, I choose C. I would go for El Shaddai over the latest CoD, because of those two 8's I am very interested in the themes of one. Sometimes I might try the lower scoring titles if they're very different like Zenoclash and Killer 7, but ANOTHER zombie game that's not absolutely amazing? I don't blame anyone for being dismissive.
You know there's a chance the feel of this game really won't gel with you right? That your criteria for choosing games (anything but numerical values?) is still no guarantee of enjoyment?
I do see what you mean about the "Saved me $60 thanks" comments, but to me if the game is scoring low it simply should have been better. What's worse are amazing games people don't get the opportunity to play or never hear about. I wish more had bought Beyond Good and Evil and had the opportunity to play Xenoblade (NOA can die in a fire for not sorting their shit on that). Likewise Mother 3 was great fun.
Lastly, how is it you think someone can either afford every single luxury they want or shouldn't be buying any of it at all? It's when you can afford very few luxuries that using tools such as metacritic to make safe bets matter most.
I have a bit of an observation though Jim. I'm a huge zombie fan, movies, comics, games you name it. it sounds like the gripes you have in the game are the same ones people would find if they were in a hopeless situation surrounded by the unread. weapons breaking all the time? check. unforeseen consequences due to using elements? (fire, explosions) check. horrendous dialogue that's laughably bad? it sounds like the guys did their research on zombie flicks. I hoped this game would be more along the lines of
a walking dead-esque
premise..but I think this
will do just fine. the other problems with melee and animation effects can be easily patched I'd think. still gonna pick this up, looks like too much fun to pass up.
I'll pick this up over the Winter after the Fall AAA release craze is over. Hopefully it will be patched up by then.
The characters not having much personality isn't that big of a deal. Hell in borderlands your people never even talked they were literally floating hands holding guns.
Just wanted to throw that out
It is, quite obviously .... both.
I think I went to great pains enough to communicate that, to the point where even the most single-minded of individuals shouldn't be having any trouble grasping the message. A game can be horribly broken and horribly charming. I fail to see why everything has to be so black-and-white to where it can only be one thing or the other.
That's the problem with gamers these days. Apparently they're so rigid in thought that there's no room for flexibility.

but I guess I was just a victim of the hype train, i'll rent at least
This game has too many problems for me to care for it though, I knew it was a let down when I heard that the story and characters were dry. Then there is the fact that it's generic zombie game #243. Unless the zombie game is named Lollipop Chainsaw then don't talk to me about it.
It's a good thing I got Disgaea 4 over this (as if someone like me was going to make any other choice to begin with).
In short: a few patches then it's a 9/10!
