They're completely meant to be different experiences from the get go, even if they're in the same genre, I don't see much point in comparing them. One is a well-done, distilled, on-the-go JRPG experience while the other is a 50 hour character-driven epic. Why compare?
iPod touch games are looking spiffier and spiffier every day.
@NoMore
is not that simple, game reviews are supposed to be buyer guides, a review will never change your opinion of a game, the problem is that some of jim's reviews are misinforming to say the least
:(
Also, how long is this game? Maybe I can borrow it from a friend for a few days...
BTW: I'm a black person and I'm totally not offended by niggles.
I only found the first puzzle frustrating because they werent clear on exactly what you could do, and what the goal was. Now I know, I kind of enjoy the puzzles, although I agree they seem kind of random and irrelevant to the rest of the game.
I agree with the conclusion of this review. This game finally shows what an appstore game, or heck even a downloadable game in general, can be if you put the effort in. At ~230 mb, its better than games 20x its size.
Anyway, I'm thoroughly surprised this game is good. I never even realized it was Square Enix. Is there a demo out that I can tell my iTouch-owning friend to get?
It didn't derail the review, it just brought out the idiots.
Thank you for your review Jim. This game has been on my radar for a while now and I am downloading it as I type this.
Do they not use the word "niggle" in Amurkamurkastan?
Wow.
I like niglet myself, as in a small/baby Nig.....
Wait, what?
Jim's taste may differ from your's, but that doesn't mean he's trolling his reviews.
If you don't like them, don't read them.
Jim's not trying to troll and ruin metacritic. These are his genuine thoughts on the games he plays.
Let's play devil's advocate though.
Firstly, even if he were trying to "ruin metacritic", that's metacritic's problem. Not yours.
Secondly, if you're of the belief that Jim is trolling for hits, you're simply contributing to his trolling with more hits! If you genuinely believed he was just a troll, why wouldn't you ignore him and go elsewhere for your reviews?
Your actions are ridiculous and go against any claim you're looking to make. To put it this way: If I hated clowns; the least sensible thing for me to do would be to go to the circus, moaning about all the clowns I'm seeing. I just wouldn't go to the bloody circus.
What's the point of someone having the right to disagree if they don't do it?
"What's the point of someone having the right to disagree if they don't do it?"
Exactly, apology accepted.
Personally, my favorite game of all time is Shadowrun on the Sega Genesis but I'd probably only give it a 7/10 based on how most gamers might feel about the game.
"Either way, reviews on a "news" site should be conducted with minimal bias. It should be evaluated based on what the reviewer feels the general population would think about the game. Personal opinion should be left out."
I could not disagree with you more, but then I'm not much of a fan of Metacritic averages either. I feel metacritic averages encourage like minded reviews by those that lack the moxy to "go against the grain".
As far as reviewers rating games based on what others may think of them, how exactly does one go about that?
I appreciate Jim's reviews for their candid honesty, something you don't find a lot of these days. Jim's going to tell you what he thinks whether you like it or not, and more often than not, I tend to agree.
I have no qualm with disagreement! A world of Yes Men would be very dull.
I've criticised aspects of Jim's work in the past, and similarly praised work I've enjoyed. However, you fundamentally dislike the way Jim operates.
I offered a solution to your disappointment; ignore Jim's reviews and accept that your disagreement goes against a sea tide of approval. Jim is not going to change because you would like him to.
If you want to carry on complaining, you are welcome to do so, but I don't see your complaints going anywhere.
2. Chaos Rings is the real deal.
That is all.

On the actual topic, this is a swell game. The replay value is odd, as you play through the four hour game from different points of view, but it's certainly a good experience... And yes, I think this was a better use of my time than FFXIII was. There's something about respecting gamer's time that SE got right this time, in contrast to that other game I mentioned.
