Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops photo

It's that time of the year again. November is officially designated Call of Duty month. It's the reason why this time of the year no longer has a huge saturation of top-quality games, as publishers scrabble to steer clear of Activision's almighty entertainment behemoth.

With its power to completely empty launch calendars, Call of Duty: Black Ops sees Treyarch taking the reins from Infinity Ward for another crack at the whip. With Infinity Ward on its knees at the moment, has the "lesser" studio stepped out from the shadows to seize the series as its own? We'll probably need a videogame review to answer such a burning question!

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC [reviewed])
Developer: Treyarch
Publisher: Activision
Release date: November 9, 2010
MSRP: $59.99

Black Ops finally sees Treyarch leave behind the ever-popular environment of World War II and embrace the slightly more modern era of the Cold War and Vietnam. Taking place throughout the 1960s, the latest Call of Duty boasts what is perhaps the most comprehensively structured, story-focused narrative that the series has ever had. In fact, I'll go one step further and say this -- Black Ops boasts the best single-player campaign that the series has ever had.

From its genuinely intriguing plot, full of dark twists and historical cameos, to the endless set pieces that throw the player from one ludicrously action-packed scenario to the next, Call of Duty: Black Ops is the game with which Treyarch has finally put its definitive stamp on the series, and even eclipsed Infinity Ward in terms of in-game narrative and memorable moments.

Much praise must also be had for the variety of gameplay. Not only is there plenty of traditional FPS action, but a number of vehicular sections are liberally spread throughout the game, and all of them are surprisingly fun. Expect to pilot helicopters, boats, motorcycles and more throughout the course of the game, and expect to be excited while doing so.

Even the pedestrian sections are spiced with variety, with guns that differ not just in model, but in modifications. Throughout each level, you'll come across guns with scopes, guns with extended mags, and guns with shotgun, grenade and even flamethrower attachments. Each gun feels powerful and heavy, with shotguns especially packing a punch. Throw in a new bunch of incredibly vicious melee kills, and you've got a brutal game that should please even the most blood-starved gamer.

The campaign pretty much does everything right. The grenade spam that plagued World at War has been annihilated, while the level designs feel inspired and heartfelt, and sometimes horrific (the section involving a certain gas attack is especially intense). Truly a magnificent single-player experience that manages to tell more in its one story than the Modern Warfare series has done with two.

Unfortunately, the quality of the single-player campaign has not been matched in the multiplayer mode, at least on PC. While you can tell that there is a very well-built, solid multiplayer experience at its core, the game is almost impossible to enjoy due to intense lag, server connection errors, and matchmaking issues. These aren't just annoying bugs -- these are issues that render the game damn near unplayable.

Even when it "works," Black Ops still stutters tremendously, and should you venture online, you best be prepared to eat several deaths simply due to the game's issues, all the while reading in-game chat complaints about how laggy everything is. For a Call of Duty game, having a poor multiplayer mode is unforgivable, due to the relative brevity of the single-player campaign, and with a multiplayer this poor, Black Ops becomes a total let-down.

I'd love to focus this review on the interesting "COD Points" system that allows you to spend in-game currency on unlocking Perks and equipment in whatever order you choose. I'd love to talk about how balanced the gameplay is and how cool the maps are. Unfortunately, after getting a "connection error" message the very second I began a last-ditch effort to fight through the problems, I've officially given up trying to suffer it. The frustrating part is that from what I have played of the multiplayer, I can see piles of potential fun. I've loved Call of Duty's multiplayer for many years, and this looks to be as good as any other, with a few extra unique twists and fun Kill Streaks. Unfortunately, it's not fun right now. Not at all. It's excruciating, frustrating, and broken beyond forgiveness.

Luckily, at least one multiplayer mode partially works properly -- Zombies. Matchmaking seems to have its own set of issues, since it can be difficult to get a match started, but at least when one starts, the amount of lag is kept to a minimum, usually only stuttering a few times per game. Zombie mode is also very fun indeed, with Treyarch making a far more involved and character-driven version of the minigame first found in World at War. The use of historical figures such as John F. Kennedy may be considered tasteless by some, but it's far more amusing than it has any right to be, and provides a sense of humor that offsets the intense, sometimes nerve-wracking gameplay that only waves of encroaching undead can provide.

I honestly, truly wish I could say more in Black Ops' favor. This is the first Call of Duty in which Treyarch has stepped out of the shadow of Infinity Ward, but the triumph has been ruined by an unbearable PC port, and this is coming from a game that had promised to do much more for PC gamers than Modern Warfare 2 did. Since we currently lack a 360 or PS3 version of the game at the time of writing, I can't say how much better they are, but this version is a disaster.

The truly stunning single-player campaign offsets many of the multiplayer's flaws, and the Zombie mode is tons of hilarious fun, but neither manages to be lengthy or deep enough to make Black Ops the truly great game that I know it should be. This is an incredibly well-made game that, once patched, will easily sit among the hottest titles of the year. As it exists right now, however, I can't recommend the game for purchase. Wait until an update comes, and then by all means jump in, but anybody who currently buys the game will get shafted.

Once the multiplayer is fixed, feel free to pop at least two more points, most likely even three, into this review's score. I can only review what I've got in front of me, however, and what I've got is a superb game that has pissed all over itself.

Final Verdict:
6.0

Alright: 6s may be slightly above average, or simply inoffensive. Fans of this genre will still thoroughly enjoy them, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.

Saw this coming from a mile away, I expected a 5.0

I'm happy with my PS3 version, although I'm finding the magic now seriously lacking.

I play COD games first for the singleplayer and then for the multiplayer, so this gives me some comfort. Still, for what I will eventually pay for it I'm hoping they get the issues sorted out and things running smoothly.

I wonder how the score would change if the multiplayer wasnt broken, but, considering how big of a deal it really is for this franchise, I think this is a pretty fair score given the problems.

JIM you are a bad reviewer because you gave Black Ops a 6 and I really like it and our oppinions are different and that makes me angry!!
Only kidding, I actually read the review and noticed it was the PC version, but we really should bet how many people will not notice that
It is good on the Xbox though, better than Modern Predatorfare 2

I've heard that there's been a lot of issues with the PC version, poor optimization and glitches and whatnot, and this confirms it. If I pick this up I'll most likely get the PS3 version, but it's a bummer to see that Treyarch dropped the ball on the PC version. Would be interested to see Jim's opinion on the console online experience.

I'm proud of you for rightly highlighting the bugs that make it unplayable, sure they'll get fixed more than likely but it shipped like that and second opinions are not often shared in the video gaming industry, Bayonetta didn't get one and that was MUCH better on PS3 post patch.

Nice one Jim.

I thought that was a very good review, and it's totally repectable what you've done by not reviewing the game at an event, or giving it points for what it will be. Unfortunately people are just going to look at the score and rage.

Well I wouldnt have bought it in the first place, because i am from Germany and you cant activate the UK Version via Steam and i don't like playing shooters on the console.

But now i am not even considering importing the austrian version of the game. I hate bad console ports...

Just as a note, while Jim didn't have any tech problems with the single player campaign, a lot of people (including myself) are getting the stuttering in the single player mode (and 100% CPU/20% GPU usage) of the PC version too, making both single and multiplayer completely unplayable.

I have to agree with almost everything Jim said here about the PC version of the game. The multiplayer is essentially completely unplayable at times thanks to the horrible lag and the connection problems.

Also, the interface is buggy as hell in the PC version. The feature to find a server a friend is playing on and join them is currently not working at all. A person can invite a friend to join their server, but it's not intuitive how to do this. Also, the friend's list does no prioritize who is currently playing the game and who is not, so you have to go down through your friend's list to see who is online. These are problems that should have been solved before the game launched.

Hmm, you didn't drop as much points from New Vegas for bugs and stuff. But, i guess, it's because you can at least play and enjoy New Vegas, while trying to suffer through Black Ops on PC is currently pretty much impossible. Anyways, i hope you do a re-review when everything is patched. I started the game only once and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Seriously, Treyarch, you could do better with what was something a quake 3 engine.

I want to see Jim write up an addendum to this review once he gets a chance to play either the 360 or the PS3 version. I want to know if the COD points system works well, or about the maps and game modes.

Sucks that these problems happened.

I appreciate reviews like this. As a company, Activision has now shown were it's focus lies. They effed up last year, and dropped it again this year. Rule of thumb should be, don't ship it if it isn't ready. Save your credibility for the future, or suffer a Dreamcast's doom.

What, Goldeneye is not a big launch? Lacking the ludicrous advertising of Black Ops but still a decent game launch. Wouldn't it be nice to have a review of that up?

Also, to anyone that thinks this is harsh (so far no one), Jim put it best " [He] can only review what [he's] got in front of [him]". If the PC port wasn't done it shouldn't be released with the other complete games.

For someone like me who never fucks around with multiplayer, is this worth it? Or is the single-player not enough to justify the $60 price tag? I've never gotten into the COD games but this one's attracting my attention.

Serves 'em right for arrogantly not providing reviewing outfits like Destructoid with copies of the various versions and in time to review before launch.

As for their frankly obscene Australian Steam price - $90USD - Activision can go f**k themselves.

The multiplayer's fine on 360 though - but it could use a lower-level set of servers so people starting out with nothing aren't being slaughtered by level 50s.

@King kong five

The SP is short. 4-5 hours.
Most people I know who have played it finished it on the first day with several hours of the day to go. $60 for 4-5 hours? Not my style but if you think that's worth it, go for it.

I'm disappointed in Destructoid that they review the game so harshly because of the online play for the PC. I have this for the PS3 and I'd like to know what Jim thinks of the online when the game actually works.

You could have complained about the PC's version, then gotten the game a day or two ago FOR A CONSOLE and given us a review. You've had enough time seeing as you just now posted this.

I think six is a bit low, but there's definitely major problems with it. My main problem is the single player. It's just not gripping me at all, and on Vet you'll be getting shot at and going red screen for a few seconds and still making it through, to some guy getting a random AK shot on you and having to start that bit again. That's not a difficulty, that's just bullshit. The story itself seems quite good, it just doesn't tell it very well.

The multi-player, at heart, is incredible, but Treyarch's servers or something is throwing it all down the drain. In the first five games I had last night, I played one full, if laggy, game, then on commencing a second it crashed my console (Sort of. It simply wouldn't move off the Loading screen, so same difference.), then I played again, and it did the same during a host migration. I then spawned into a game mid-way through that suffered from major lack, as did my next.

However; I'd just waited for two or three months to get this, so I was determined to carry on, and it definitely paid off. With every game it seemed to get better and better, as if my PS3 was going "OK, I'm getting the hang of this online lark". It still suffers, but it's like having a 2/3 bar connection all the time. I'm hoping fixes come so I can enjoy it properly.

Have to say I agree. MP is laggy as hell at the moment for those who want to look it up I read somewhere cl_maxpackets 100 gets rid of some of the lag. SP though is really good. surprisingly. I haven't been getting the 100 CPU/GPU usage everyone else has though :). Just a few hiccups every now and again. So you only reviewed this for the pc because you have no console versions? Lame lol.

I honestly expected another MW2 story of where I just wanted to beat for the sake of beating it.

Plus Fav servers section is not working :(.

Well at least the server browser with the exception of Favs is better than cod4 IMO. Namely cause ocd4 literally crashes my internet if I refresh it more than one time.

Here's hoping it gets better.

Man I thought the 360 version of lag and matchmaking issues was bad, great game when you can get in a good match. Just seems like they were not prepared enough server wise which is kinda bad since its almost a given its gonna be a successful game online. Hopefully in a few weeks stuff gets in order.

I'm with Nathsie when I say that I didn't expect the magic to fade soo quickly. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a pretty entertaining game.. but perhaps my expectations were set a little too high.

I do like the cool little extras like Dead Ops Arcade and Theater Mode. (Dead Ops Arcade is actually very fun in itself!!) I also like how you can do couch co-op online matches. That's a great addition (although I'm playing on a PS3 which doesn't allow 2 different user logins).

I'll still be holding on to my copy of MW2 since my friend and I really enjoy the spec ops co-op missions. (I enjoy this type of co-op better than typical online deathmatch scenarios.) To me it's more fun to be working towards a goal of eliminating all of the computer players instead of having respawns. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase of Black Ops. Game on!
