Review: Borderlands: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx photo

I would imagine that, if I were to ask any given Borderlands fan, they’d tell me that the third time’s the charm: following “The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned” and “Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot,” Gearbox’ third DLC pack, “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx” might be the best.

As far as I’ve been keeping tabs, “General Knoxx” addresses most fans’ complaints thus far: it raises the level cap, introduces new enemies, weapons, and class mods, and even provides something akin to end-game content. Alas “General Knoxx” isn’t perfect; a handful of flaws -- some fresh, some familiar -- rear their ugly heads.

Borderlands: "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx (Xbox 360 [reviewed], PlayStation 3, PC)
Developer: Gearbox Software
Publisher: 2K Games
Released: February 23, 2010 (Xbox 360); February 25, 2010 (PS3, PC)
MSRP: 800 Microsoft points; $10.00

“General Knoxx” takes players post-Vault: the ragtag hunters seem comfy on Pandora after thwarting Atlas Corporation’s attempt to raid the Vault's coffers, and a new colony has popped up in the desert. Friendly faces populate this new place, T-bone Junction -- it’s a sprawling and well-lived in little space-village.

Gearbox has done a great job making players believe that progress has come to Pandora: Scooter’s developed new brands of vehicles and Moxxi has closed her Underdome in favor of “The Red Light,” a bar-cum-strip joint-cum-brothel.

Unfortunately, Atlas isn’t finished on Pandora. They’re miffed at Mordecai and co. and have put a bounty on their heads, dispatching General Knoxx and a band of elite assassins to stockpile munitions for a renewed hunt for the Vault -- if a few Vault Hunters die in the process, so be it. Thankfully Athena, one of Atlas’ assassins, has gone rogue and wants to help you.

And this is a low point for “General Knoxx.” Gearbox didn’t make much of an effort to explain who Athena is or what motivates her, and any semblance of narrative is just an excuse to send you traipsing to a different part of Pandora. “General Knoxx” is clever and funny as always, and Borderlands real appeal lies in shooting people in the face, but it's certainly a narrative step backward, especially since the "Dr. Ned" pack was so strong in this department.

Different areas are linked by long highways, giving players plenty of chances to experiment with Scooter’s new vehicles. Unfortunately, these roads are probably the weakest part of “General Knoxx.”

Crimson Lancer armored cars also patrol the area. Unfortunately, the roads aren’t wide enough to effectively maneuver or fight the Lancers. If you happen to die in the road, you’ll simply re-spawn … right in the middle of the road you just died in. You’ll get run over (or shot by infinitely re-spawning drones) immediately, leading you to re-spawn … in the exact same place. It’s easier just to gun it and hope to outrun your enemies, not a strategy that synergizes well with the shoot-and-loot mechanics that make Borderlands so fun. Given that you spend a lot of time navigating these roads, Gearbox really shot themselves in the foot by making them really f*cking annoying.

A New-U station with Fast Travel would've fixed that right up.

Fortunately, all of that changes once you get off the highways and into the vast Pandoran desert. There’s a lot of empty space out there, but I liked having plenty of open space to drive around and learn how each of the three new vehicles handle. The physics are kind of janky on each of them -- you’ll flip yourself rather easily -- but spinning donuts and being able to jump your car off a bridge really fit into Borderlands’ over-the-top aesthetic.

As in the original game, most of the missions in “General Knoxx” are of the go-here-fetch-this variety, but Gearbox seem to have learned a little bit during the past six months of DLC development. Instead of sending you over previously-covered ground, I found that most of the missions in “General Knoxx” sent me to new areas of the map to encounter new types of enemies.

For what it’s worth, these “new” types of enemies are mostly just re-skins of older Pandoran denizens. Nevertheless, there’s a similar sense that Gearbox has been refining the formula: AI seems little quicker on the uptake and less stupidly aggressive. In that same vein: you’ll still be exploring bandit encampments, but they’re more architecturally interesting and varied. There’s a renewed focus on cover – no doubt a continuation of “Mad Moxxi”’s level design -- that makes combat feel more natural and organic as ever.

Well, as natural as shooting shotgun shells full of elecricity at people can feel.

Perhaps the best example of this iterative design is Midgetville, a group of cascading ramps and platforms that create a suspended shantytown populated by skag-rustling midgets. Midgets riding skags sounds like a silly improvement, but the difference in mobility and attack combinations makes a huge difference. The different Crimson Lance troop types -- rocketeers, soldiers resistant to fire damage, soldiers in mechs -- function similarly: little changes can have enormous implications.

If you want to be assy about it, perhaps the only truly new enemy type is the Drifter, a stupidly tall spider that spits acid. These are only found in the open desert areas, where, as I mentioned earlier, you’ll get the most mileage out of Scooter’s new digs. The Drifters are interesting: they’re certainly aggressive, but they keep their distance as long as you don’t mess with them.

Even better, the Drifters give Pandora an ethereal sense of beauty and wonder: bounding through the desert, weaving in and out of boulders, bridge pillars, and Drifter legs alike can be quite satisfying.

While “General Knoxx” keeps Borderlands broken multiplayer level scaling system -- playing with anyone a few levels above or below you is impossible -- it does a great job balancing the game. Whereas, in the original game and “Dr. Ned,” doing too many optional missions would quickly over-level you (rendering the game boring), “General Knoxx” keeps everything on an even keel: doing the optional missions nets you great loot and cash (and up to 11 new skill points), but the game keeps its challenge consistent and interesting.

Even at level 61, the end of the game will be suitably tough, and a handful of post-credits missions will certainly keep you on your toes. The toughest missions -- specifically an optional boss and another circle-of-slaughter arena -- and best loot are saved for last, creating the type of pseudo-endgame content that fans have been clamoring for since Borderlands was released in October.

But even before these optional, endgame missions, “General Knoxx” offers the best loot, experience, and money available, in a fraction of the space and time. While loot rarity and strength is always a function of your character’s level, “General Knoxx” steadily feeds you with powerful and varied loot. I’m not sure what kind of deep calculus governs Borderlands loot drops, but the alchemists at Gearbox have found a way to stimulate that reptilian hoarder mentality better than ever.

“The Secret Armory of General Knoxx” takes a hit when it comes to story and the overreliance on badly-designed highway sections, but in terms of new content and a big, vibrant world to explore, it’s easily the strongest Borderlands DLC pack to date. With “General Knoxx,” Gearbox plays to its strengths and has taken a few (subtle) steps to perfecting and refining Borderlands’ design.

To put this DLC’s quality in concrete terms: I’ll be hard-pressed to hoof it back to Fyrestone after getting a taste of the superior T-bone Junction.

Score: 8.5 -- (8s are impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.)

It's 800 Points, not 1200.

I still need to beat playthrough 2 before picking this up. Should get on that...

Been playing it since last night, great DLC. Makes up for the abomination that was Mad Moxxi. You really have to play it co-op, though, or it's just atrociously hard on your second playthrough.

I was just going to say that my GF and I have been trying co-op and I'm lvl 50 and shes 44 and we get our asses handed to us on a silver platter.

We really need some better guns but my god I was farming stuff and can't find anything better than my 202x7 handgun :( My sniper is decent around 600 and acid and all that worth 300,000 but I use my hand guns 90% of the time.

You WILL get raped trying to play through these new areas solo. I was a level over the recommendation and just breaking through the beginning roadblocks was downright hair-pulling impossible. Maybe a Brick could solo it, only because of the insanely long down time allowed to get that second wind kill, but any other class is going to get trashed. If you ARE going to solo, go very, very slowly. And bring something with 4x corruption dmg.

I'm still waiting on a GOTY edition to pick up Borderlands. I was going to buy it at release, but then some reasons happened and now it doesn't make financial sense to spend £39.99 on a game and another £20 on addons, even if they are all kinds of awesome.

I downed Crawmerax last night with some buddies for the first time. It was a ton of fun and we scored some great loot. The Secret Armory of Gen. Knoxx fixed all of my biggest issues with the game -- though there are some major glitches that need to be fixed (e.g., getting locked out of the armory that prevents you from completing the "armory assault" mission, etc.) That said, this is definitely worth $10. Hell, it's probably worth $30.

Looking forward to starting it up as soon as the PSN gets fixed.

@Luftwaffles,

Then I'm glad I'm using Brick! Centurian modded with 52% increased (team) health and +8 (team) health regen with 4-Safeguard, 3-Hardened, 3-Diehard. As long as there are any enemies around me I'm frickin' IMPOSSIBLE to take down.

Also, I've got a Corrosive Helix Rocket Launcher with ~600x3 damage and x4 corrosion. All that before even starting the DLC.

I suspect I'll be fine going it solo. Maybe not for Crawmerax, but the rest should be doable.

The Lance Probes along the highway can fuck right off. There was one point where I drove by a bunch of them and then they followed me the entire way to the top end of the map and 10 or so of them just gang banged me continually. I must have died at least 10 times.

Every time it would respawn me in the same spot and all 10 of those probes would have full health and shields again. I almost quit right there.

Me, Char, and another friend of ours played this last night. They are not shitting about the difficulty. You need friends to help, and even then, you have to watch each others ass. I'm loving it for the difficulty alone.

This DLC definitely has me interested. While I wasn't a fan of Borderlands, the main problem I had was that lack of any real difficulty. It was far too easy to grind down one enemies health and then die and have your friend take care of business. This seems to really require team work.

I've played for an hour or so, and I cant help but agree entirely. Its really good and fun and all, but has its flaws, especially the stupid highways.

First time I found a Crimson Lance chest, though... oh boy, that was exciting! Good way to make chest running interesting again.

great write up. great DLC too. i would say that dr. ned was pretty damned polished, but did not have quite as much content as general knoxx.

the highway design is a bit of a pisser, and there are some clunky clipping issues here and there with vehicles and ledges in certain places.

all in all, great.

like others have said, bring a 4x (high or very high chance) vitriolic weapon, youll need it. using a high dmg vitr. pistol (and later shotgun) this is certainly solo-able... just have to play smart and take advantage of 2nd winds.

As far as difficulty, I started Knoxx on playthrough 2 at level 50 and got destroyed for the first little bit until I hit level 52. After that I thought it was actually incredibly easy....I did the whole thing solo and didnt die after that. I have a 122x4 caustic x4 shotgun and a 115 hellfire smg and only used those through the whole thing. I think you just really need to keep at it until you hit 52 and then everything should be pretty easy going.

Don't know why everybody is shitting on about the difficulty, it's really not that hard. I've gone half way through the DLC by myself with a level 34 Brick and it's a breeze.

It's amazing fun though. I powered through the entire game in a couple of days to have the game fresh in my mind for this DLC and it manages to bring enough new stuff to the table for me to still not be bored. Well worth the money! BUY IT!

My only gripe in all these BL DLCs is that all of them litterally FORCE you to either play marathon sessions or refight thru areas (or arena waves) to continue after you stop playing. I'm not quite sure WHY there can't be mutliple Fast Travel points on Zombie Island or the new Armory areas...I'm pretty sure they could have limited access to the additional Fast Travel points until after you completed specific quests.

Definately worth the $10, however.

I dont have my xbox connected to LIVE anymore so Im usually playing solo. This DLC had me closer to throwing my controller through the screen than any game ive ever played on 360. Excruciatingly difficult and tedious. I never made it to midgetville... by the time i broke through the end highway fortress i was sick of it.

It has it's ups & downs off difficulty, but starting it PT2 solo as a lvl 50 Hunter (spec'd in mostly Gunslinger and Rogue) Knoxx hasn't been too hard, especially with a Caustic Equalizer, Pestilent Defiler and Acid Wing on Bloodwing.

The only time it's truly difficult is when you get gang-raped by these highway drones or the bandit vehicles in the desert. Hell, even taking down single Devastators is piss-easy with the above mentioned weapons. Still, a great DLC and it has had me on the edge of my seat more than once.

I haven’t bought any DLC and wasn’t interested in them (despite really enjoying much of the game), but this new one’s got my attention.

I think what I wanted from the DLC was a more solid “narrative” than an offhand, albeit new, environment. What I mean is that I didn’t care much about an island full of zombies or an arena full of Thunderdome parodies, which is what the last DLCs were advertised as. But I am interested in a fortress full of soldiers — as the means directly to the very recognizable end-goal of “kill the fuck out of this huge mech guy.” Know what I mean?

Now that I think about it, I bought Fallout 3 DLC based on the same kind of criteria, too. My ideal DLC doesn’t necessarily need a good story, just a compelling narrative goal, I suppose.
