Review: Bodycount

5:00 PM on 09.06.2011   |   Jim Sterling

Review: Bodycount photo

When Black was released in 2006, I found it a most frustrating experience. It was incredibly stylish and looked gorgeous for its time, featuring some amazing environmental destruction and a bold artistic approach. However, something about it just felt ... second rate. The action was uninspired and the story might as well have not been there. When the time came for Black to stand up and be counted, it promptly sat on its ass.

With Bodycount, a number of Black's developers have returned to create a spiritual sequel, and they certainly kept a sense of tradition. The lifelessness and threadbare plot are back in full effect, but now the game doesn't even have impressive visuals to fall back on.

Bodycount (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: Guildford Studio
Publisher: Codemasters
Released: August 30, 2011
MSRP: $59.99 (PS3, 360) / $49.99 (PC)

Bodycount places you in the shoes of a member of The Network, which bills itself as a "modern solution" to "modern problems." Apparently, the "problem" in this game is an African civil war, and the "solution" is to encourage peace by decimating both sides with big guns. Eventually, some group called The Target shows up and you have to destroy it for no good reason by shooting more people with more guns.

That, in a nutshell is the plot of Bodycount. There's almost literally nothing else to it. Africa has a war, and then some bad people are bad for reasons that are never explained. I hope you like your violence unjustified!

Like its spiritual predecessor, Bodycount is a game that puts the focus squarely on gun porn and endless amounts of action. However, like Black, the action in question feels rather lackluster, as if the developers were painting by numbers rather than striving to stand out. There's a rudimentary cover system, where aiming with the gun forces the player to stand still and manually control his peeking/crouching with the left stick, and combat is broken up only briefly by backtracking tasks such as "Run to door, find it's locked, run to computer, unlock door."

The one way in which Bodycount tries to appear unique is, itself, something we've already seen before. Players are graded and rewarded for performing "Skill Shots" during combat. Chaining together particularly impressive or accurate kills rack up a combo meter -- the higher the combo, the better the score. It would be a very cool idea ... if Bulletstorm hadn't launched first, with a much better game.

Whereas Bulletstorm constantly rewarded players with all manner of exotic kills, ranging from groin shots to electrocutions and more, Bodycount's kills are so vanilla that it doesn't even begin to compare. In Bulletstorm, you can lasso an enemy, kick him in the air, and shoot the poor victim in his throat. In Bodycount, you can ... score headshots and shoot explosive barrels. The "Skill" shots in question are nothing we haven't seen in every first-person-shooter over the past ten years, and to release in the same year as Bulletstorm only drives home how uninventive the developers were.

Enemies drop "Intel" upon defeat, which is used to initiate special abilities. The four abilities include temporary invulnerability, explosive bullets, the power to highlight enemies for better targeting, and a devastating airstrike. While useful in the game, it's yet another case where Bodycount is doing things we've all seen before.

Outside of the Skill Shot system, we're left with a mediocre first-person-shooter that doesn't do anything to earn a player's attention. Levels are little more than big arenas full of enemies that feature only the most rudimentary of A.I, guns consist only of shotgun, assault rifile and SMG variants, and even the destructible environments fail to stand out as particularly impressive in a generation that gave us Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Every mission is the same, and even when you're given the interesting objective of negotiating or apprehending a target, that goal invariably changes halfway through, turning into the same old assassination mission. Don't believe the game when it tells you to keep an enemy alive or simply talk to someone, because it never happens. Such objectives only exist to drive home how repetitive and monotonous the game actually is. I'm all for games where you just need to kill things, but if the killing in question is this flavorless, some mission variety is essential.

It's not like the game's four-hour campaign is crushingly unpleasant to play. It's just so mundane that to play it feels like a chore. Repeating levels full of repeating missions, churning down clone armies of repeating enemies with a range of repeating firearms. Bodycount typifies the phrase "One trick pony," with the added insult that the trick in question isn't even a good one.

As if to truly emphasize how uncreative the game is, it features the kind of typical, cynical, shoehorned multiplayer that manages to be exceptional only due to my wondering why anybody would bother developing it. Multiplayer consists of Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch across a small range of maps, and about five people are playing it. Slightly more interesting is the game's co-op feature, a fairly standard wave-based survival mode. Once again, however, it does only the bare minimum and there are simply better survival modes out there.

The game's not ugly, but it's definitely no stunner. If Bodycount does one commendable thing, it's the presentation of a rather colorful visual style in an industry full of brown shooters. Environments are brightly lit, or at least feature strong color contrast, and there's even some nice music to accompany them. Character design is from the science fiction bargain basement, however, and each level is rather flat and lifeless in spite of the color. Like so much about this game, it feels as if the developers only went far enough to make the graphics bearable, and went no further.

Bodycount might have gotten more attention five years ago, but even compared to Black, it's unexceptional. The word "generic" has become quite overused in recent years, but if ever a game truly deserved it, Bodycount would definitely be a top contender. It's about the only thing it could hope to contend in, because compared to the dozens of other, superior FPS titles on the market, Bodycount is just another shooter in a market that already has far too many of them.

Final Verdict:
5.0

Mediocre: 5s are an exercise in apathy, neither Solid nor Liquid. Not exactly bad, but not very good either. Just a bit "meh," really. Basically, this is like a "7" on your grandfather's blog.

Can't agree with you more on this one, seriously I don't understand how this game could be released with any expectation to compete for sales...it just felt so so so basic and aged.

THIS REVIEW IS BIASED BECAUSE BY DEFINITION YOU ARE HAVING AN OPINION so there really should not be an issue whatever the score is.

I played the demo for 45 seconds, deleted it and rated it 1/5 on the PSN store. Unless they changed this game I was more impressed with Haze

I couldn't even complete the demo's first mission. The assignment of two functions to the right trigger (on Xbox) was a brutal mistake.

Full agreement here.

Saw this coming for something like a year and a half now. It looked cool at first, but then there was no marketing for a loooooong time. For a while I thought it had been canceled or something. Then there was terrible footage, and nobody was interested, and now it will fail.

Yeah, a 5 is about what I would have scored the demo, for all the reasons described here. Any idea if it has split-screen? If so, it might be worth a rental next time I get drunk with my buddy.

Just a quick note to the reviewer. When you start a game review with the year a particular game was made, make sure you get the year right!
Criterion's Black was released in 2000, not 2006. Never mind, your only six years off!!

Tried the demo, it's cool that they tried to add a bit of color to the FPS scene, but when everything else about the game is bland as hell, they might as well have filled it with brown and bloom.

The launch window for this things stinks more then its gameplay. They just wanted an excuse that they could not compete with the 4-5 other games coming out at the same time.

Wow, you have a point there about Black, I haven't played it since it came out, but I was thinking about that game this morning! That game... had the best fucking glass! You could break it just by pointing your gun into it and then all the other little pieces would crash afterwards with noticeably awesome sound effects. And then they'd have these tiny square checker pieces of glass you could just gleefully strafe across shattering the shit out of them... so how's the glass in Bodycount? Bet it sucks lol

Second rate? Uninspired action?
I can't believe it. Black was probably the best PS2/Xbox FPS, it was amazing in every detail and I felt it even better than Killzone (and I'm a huge Killzone fan) -- Stunning visuals and nasty action under a butter-smooth frame rate.

So much fun with Black back then, but it seems we're just a few who actually enjoyed that game.

Didn't try Bodycount, I'm not really interested. I think they should make less FPS nowadays, there're other genres that need much more attention.

@reddotdinx

The Xbox and PS2 had barely come out in 2000, and Black was a game that came late in their lifecycle. It is 2006, I suggest you use your internet to do some basic research. And by that I mean, Google.

Aside, I thought the demo was fun, I don't see why every review is putting it up against modern day shooters. The whole point of the game was to bring FPS's back to the old school mentality of 'shoot a lot of stuff' like Duke Nukem Forever tried to do, where story and graphics are secondary.

Am I the only one who appreciates that? It's a nice change from the usual CoD/Battlefield or the sheer over the top-ness of Bulletstorm.

Terrible, terrible game. Giving it a 5 out of 10 is WAY too generous. Honestly, I have been playing games for over 25 years. I have played everything under the sun. Shooters are my third favorite genre, and I play absolutely everyone that gets released.

When I watched Boducount's credits after about 3 hours, all I could think to myself is "I just finished what is probably the worst shooter I have ever played". I am pretty forgiving with shooters as well. I don't complain when A.I. isn't the best. I don't complain when it is too linear. I don't complain when there isn't much of a story. I don't complain about these things because a shooter doesn't really need these things as much as other genres do.

Sometimes, you just wanna shoot crap. Bodycount has no story. It has no A.I. It only has 3 areas in the entire 3 hour single player game. The weapons feel like crap to shoot. The aiming is stiff. The graphics look like a late gen PS2 game. The music is horrid. The sound effects are the only decent thing in the game. And the destruction?? HA! I have seen better destruction in PS1 games.

Don't buy this game. Let those who developed it and thought they could get away with charging $65 for it stand in a corner and think about what they have done.

@RenegadePanda: you're not the only one who appreciates it. I love the old school style and am tired (for the most part, Mmmmmmm bf3) of current shooters. But damn I couldn't get into Bodycount. Loved Black, but this didn't click. Back to waiting for Serious Sam 3.

Black was an awesome shooter, graphics regardless. It just had a style and atmosphere that were different (dark, and gunfire was intense) and clean feeling mechanics. The story was actually, although subtle and 'throwaway', pretty fitting and added to the feel. (all of the above in context of it's time obviously)

Bodycount looks like it threw out the window everything that made black atleast a love it/hate it cult hit. Gone is the pervasive bleak atmosphere and intense, dark vibe. This is no spiritual successor. An orange can call itself an apple but that doesn't make it one.

I tried the demo and it drove me mad that the ADS forced me to stand still. Seemed so counter intuitive to how every other FPS works and eventually, I just gave up because it wasn't really doing much for me at all. Based on my brief experience, I don't imagine I'll be trying Bodycount out and the reviews I've seen are now cementing my thoughts on it. Too bad I guess.
