And considering as gamers we grew up with stuff like Mario and Mega Man, BloodRayne is a cake walk.
I thought the controls were pretty good after learning them, and switching Dash off of L2 to L1." - This.
"After checking that gameplay video, I'm totally interested - 2D DMC! Tons of score attack shit! There aren't enough of these games nowadays, with the hand-held tunnel systems, and hour long tutorials in contemporary games (our in the case of FFXIII, a 12 hour long tutorial :p)." - Also this.
Jim being the ONLY reviewer pointing out those negatives was poor wording on my part. Jim being the only reviewer that shared my opinion of the game (according to metacritic) would probably be more accurate.
we already have Castlevania, but it's not enough and i would prefer a Lament of Innocence or Curse of Darkness feel, music and art to it
that would brought back the love for the true vampire games :P
will get this for sure. need to finish Hard Corps and Moon Diver :)
I think that's it guys. I am now no longer afraid to die after hearing one of the most beautiful phrases in my life.
The jumping mechanics are just downright poor considering how exact the game requires you to be. Also, the combat is very sluggish compared to the UNIVERSALLY BETTER Dishwasher: Vampire Smile. It feels positively lagged.
Overall for me: 5 out of 10.
How sad is it that, sincerely, I am way more jealous of the XBLA offerings than the actual major game releases? PSN has a lot of good ones too.. but I want access to both.
thank god there is a website that isn't afraid to say just how shit the FF13s and bloodraynes are.
thank you, even though i hate you Jim, i like you.
Maybe you should have gotten help from the wizard.
I wanted to put a pic up of the cover to the movie, but I'm in my phone, don't really know how to do it anyway, and I'm too lazy to do so.
You get the point this right?
It's very odd to see you compare this game to Streets of Rage when you try to criticize it. At least now I know you're about as competent at reviewing as you claim Wayforward is at design.
Maybe you should stop reviewing and article writing and start your own online blog. A great name for it would be, "Bawing and Bitching."
That said, I'm having a pretty good time with Betrayal.
It just so happens that I played the demo and fell on Jim's side of things. Yes, I could have "learned the controls" as others have put it and had a better experience. The question I had to ask myself is, "is it worth my time and frustration to do so?"
The answer came back a resounding no.
I think part of it also is that I wanted a proper Bloodrayne 3 sequel to build upon the best parts of the second one. Instead I got an old school NES side scroller of which I went through enough pain and suffering with back in the 80's and don't really want to relive the experience save for a few classics like Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden (NES) and such.
*get excited and scroll down to score*
Xo
But only the ones you disagree with, amirite?
Interestingly, other reviews I've seen for the game seem to say the same things, but in a positive light (insofar as difficulty, plot), so I guess it's just a matter of opinion.
Holy shit, stop the presses, etc.
WayForward actually managed to make a game that a greater number of critics like less than what was considered a guilty pleasure which provided as much if not more pleasure than guilt. That is an accomplishment in itself, like winning a Biggest Loser award(which could hardly be a larger paradox without causing the laws of Physics to fail around it spontaneously).
So, yeah. These are the kinds of games I play.
I never get the sense that Jim can be bought so I'll take his word that this game is crap and not, in fact, "amazing." If Jim wouldn't mind stepping on some more toes I would love to read his review of IGN's review.
For why should a reviewer's reviews not themselves be reviewed? For example, I give Sterling's Blood Rayne review a 7/10. If reviewer's reviews were reviewed we would get a better picture of how reliable and unbiased a review actually is.
I give the IGN editor's review of Blood Rayne a 1/10. I think he is most likely a piece of poo. What says Jim if he were to tackle this query?
Also, Dan "Shoe" Hsu is NOT to be trusted by any account. I don't know if he's cleaned up his act but he lost my trust many years ago when he said Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was better than Final Fantasy Tactics. In order to come to that conclusion he must either be
1. Corrupt, or 2. Stupid. I don't want to insult him by calling him stupid, so I have to default to the conclusion that he is corrupt.
I want to know how much corruption there is in the video game industry, both the companies that make games and the men who review them. And I want Destructoid to be the ones to tell me.
You know.. those aren't the only two reviews. In general, while both Jim and IGN are outliers, Jim is further from the norm than IGN. Regardless, you should trust your own taste more than any reviewer or amalgamation of reviews. If you like this kind of game, play it. If not, avoid it.
I bought Vanquish for $10 at Target (another game that Jim rated extremely low for difficulty) and I started playing it on hard and haven't really had any of the issues that Jim talked about. I'm really quite enjoying it and it's unique approach to 3rd person shooting.
In Vanquish's case, Jim's low review (the lowest out of 50 reviews on GameRankings) only made a small dent, but in Bloodrayne's case, his review (again, the lowest) is only one of 9 total and has dropped the overall rating by almost 10%.
That's pretty harsh.
I almost feel like GameRankings and Metacritic should take an Olympic Judging approach and drop the highest and lowest scores when finding the average.
Now I'm not saying that Jim shouldn't express his opinion (he obviously did not have fun playing the game), I'm just agreeing with killias2 on this one and pretty much every other very negative Jim review. If Jim doesn't like it, check it out for yourself before you completely cast it aside.
And this one has a demo, so there's no real excuse for not checking it out for yourself.
I guess that makes me some kind of self-absorbed elite masochist who wants to impress women with the fact I play video games.
Or maybe I just like the game OK. Its not the greatest game ever by any stretch of the imagination, but its not as bad as Mr. Sterling claims, either.
Those who have no fond memories of skirt-wearing vampire hunters who controlled like the undead themselves fighting hyper agile enemies or would prefer that those kinds of experiences remain in the realm of memories may want to wait until some Xbox Live deal of the week at the very soonest to download this if the memories themselves won't suffice and even then, if they have a Nintendo DS or 3DS, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia might be what Dr.Acula ordered.
The biggest disappointment is the other kind of rating attached to this game(T for not containing not clearly visible Teats).
Women's nipples are still apparently more terrifying than graphic death and dismemberment to the ESRB or at least the people whose sensibilities are being played to with such content ratings.
