Review: Bionic Commando

Review: Bionic Commando photo

Bionic Commando is a game I think very few of us ever saw coming. Sure, the NES game is a classic and very popular with American audiences but it had been so long that it was hard to imagine a follow-up would ever occur. Due to the efforts of Ben Judd, producer, this beloved franchise is being launched headlong into the modern age of gaming.

I've been anticipating this game for a very long time. Was it worth the wait? Umm... well, hit the jump and we'll talk about it, mmkay?

Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando (PC, PS3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: GRIN
Publisher: Capcom
Released: May 19, 2009
MSRP:
$59.99

The new, edgier Bionic Commando begins many years after Nathan "Rad" Spencer stopped the Imperial Army from reviving their former leader, Master D. In the aftermath of the war, Spencer and other soldiers using bionic limbs were hailed as heroes for a time. Soon, public opinion shifted and these "Bionics" became feared as the dangerous weapons they were. Laws were passed which required Bionics to relinquish their limbs, leading to a conflict between those who support the Bionics and the government which has oppressed them.

Spencer has been held in prison all these years, which has caused his red hair to fade and become dreadlocks. Kidding aside, he's become a stereotypical, gritty action hero. Called back into duty by the government which shunned him and baited with information on his missing wife, Nathan must once again wield his bionic arm to take down a pro-Bionics terrorist group which has attacked a city.

It's an interesting setting with some great potential, all of which winds up squandered. The story, such as it is, plods along with very little development and inexplicably shifts gears about halfway through. Characters are not given the opportunity to be shaped into people you care about with most dialogue boiling down to giving directions or Spencer asking about his lost wife. As a result, plot twists fall flat and the climactic battle feels not unlike every other fight you've engaged in.

Bionic Commando

This points to another issue I take with the game: Combat sucks. It's just boring. Nathan can carry two guns at a time. His basic pistol is a semi-automatic. Secondary weapons include a shotgun, grenade launcher, machine gun and multi-targeting rocket launcher. The aiming reticule is quite large on all the weapons, even when zooming in a bit to gain greater accuracy, so it can be hard to tell if you're going to hit a guy unless you're right on top of him.

Certain enemies will go down more easily by making use of the bionic arm attacks, such as grabbing enemies and throwing them or using the line to slam into their chests. All of the arm-based attacks are kind of fun for the first hour or so of gameplay. It soon becomes a tedious affair.

One good idea that comes out of the combat is an experience system. As you acquire weapons and new abilities for your arm, challenges become available. These can be as simple as killing a certain number of enemies with a specific weapon or more complicated tasks like taking out guys while swinging. As you complete challenges, your weapons level up to do more damage or hold more ammunition. This would be great if the combat were enjoyable but, since it isn't, they become forgettable. Thankfully, these challenges are completely optional.

Bionic Commando

In terms of gameplay, the only thing that really works well is the swinging mechanic. While it's true that the onus is on the player to make sure that they're targeting something they can actually grab with the arm, the game offers a lot of support in this regard. Simply holding down the Wire Action button will eventually cause Nathan to grab something, provided any objects get into range of the arm, and the auto-aim is really forgiving. It takes a little bit of getting used to but is very accessible.

Swinging is exhilerating and it's very satisfying when you've managed to cover a great distance by grappeling a lengthy sequence of objects. But the level design can be frustrating at times as it's a totally linear game with a distinct path that the player is to follow. There are two very obvious conceits which contribute to this, one of which makes sense in the context of the game and another that gives the impression that not a lot of time was spent really thinking things through.

Bionic Commando

The first is water, which crops up in a lot of areas. Because Nathan has a giant metal arm attached to his torso, it only stands to reason that falling into a body of water would make him sink like, well, a guy with over a hundred pounds of metal grafted to his body. There is a brief period of time in which you can save yourself by trying to grappel something above the surface but it can be very hard to accomplish. The water is nearly opaque for some reason and it's almost impossible to even see solid ground to latch onto.

The other environmental restriction is the massive amounts of radiation flooding the bombed city. According to Super Joe -- Nathan's commander -- bionics are "very sensitive to radiation." That's about all the explanation we ever get about it and it feels really lazy It doesn't even make sense. How is it, exactly, that there are such disparate, seemingly arbitrary pockets of radiation creating these paths that are safe to traverse?

Regardless of how stupid the whole thing is, the effects on gameplay are quite simple. If you venture near the edge of the playable area, you'll get a little radiation warning. Step further out of bounds and a klaxon wails, the screen starts flashing and you begin to die very quickly. In addition, some surfaces are covered in radiation because radiation is apparently not unlike ivy or a million other things that could prevent someone from getting a good grip on a surface which would make some honest sense.

Bionic Commando

The single-player might not be fantastic, but it's a shining star compared to the tacked-on multiplayer component. Online games consist of Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag in a variety of maps. You know, just like damn near every multiplayer game in existence. And, since the combat isn't particularly fun, there really isn't any reason to play the multiplayer at all.

This is a tragedy, as the unique gameplay aspect of the arm could have lent itself to some really creative and fun competitive modes. A mode, for example, where players must try to collect as many randomly appearing items as possible could be a ton of fun. Or how about a race mode where players swing along a course to reach the finish line (which could really work because the guy at greatest risk of being shot is the one in front -- the guy whose back everyone can see). It's a staggering waste of potential.

In fact, that summarizes Bionic Commando as a whole. It isn't what I would call a bad game but it's far from being a good one and the possibilities for it being great went unrealized. It's worth checking out to play with the swing mechanics and to see the game's impressive visuals but I wouldn't recommend wasting more than a few hours on it and can't encourage anyone to pay retail price for the opportunity.

Score: 5 -- Mediocre (5s are an exercise in apathy, neither Solid nor Liquid. Not exactly bad, but not very good either. Just a bit "meh," really.)

huh, so far i'm actually enjoying the single player combat.

I agree that the multiplayer is a wasted mess and doesn't get even close to the potential it could have reached.

I'm so disappointed at reviews for this, especially the revelation that the supposedly open-world isn't really at all. May pick it up at a later date.

I played this game and was really disappointed how angry the main character is and how seriously the story takes itself. It's a little ridiculous and just isn't executed that well.

Hmm, about what I expected. Its really hard to bring a classic concept to 3D and have it still be good. A lot of successful developers make it look easy, but they are just that talented. In any case I'll rent it.

Such tragedy, all that effort, marketing, and money all wasted. Hope you guys didn't pre-order the game.

I knew this would be bad as soon as I saw Nathan Spencer. He is honestly one of the worst designed heroes of the decade. There is absolutely nothing appealing about this guy. A 12-year old suburban white kid wouldn't think this guy is cool. He's that bad.

The story has to accommodate the character "design" so of course the dude can't crack a smile. The levels look no fun either with nothing memorable going on. It's like a recycle of the faceless Gears of War world but at least that game put a giant worm in it.

What happened? The original game is a silly concept. Re-armed succeeds because the team who made it realized this. Radd (as far as I'm concerned Nathan and Radd are separate characters) is so much of an 80's action movie star you can't help but love the guy. The game itself also realizes the silliness with the funny messages, sweet references, and crazy bosses. Though all that tongue-in-cheek humor there is a sense of seriousness to keep the game grounded and Radd ends the a true hero.

This game bombs (as the review suggests) because it has none of that humor. For ****'s sake, you have a character who formerly went by the name of Radd (the review states that his commanding officer is still called Super Joe) who has a Bionic Arm and fights Nazi allegory enemies with it and previously blew up a cloned Hitler. What's not to laugh about?

I get the feeling that there were two teams here: One who understood the original game (team 1) and made a faithful recreation of it with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor for the fans and new players and another team (2) who didn't get the joke.

Hopefully a sequel will either be made by team 1 or somebody can send team two some Louis C.K. DVD's and some Stallone/Willis/Schwarzenegger movies so they can learn to laugh.

I actually tended to avoid it when it was on the Capcom booth in last year's ComicCon. I don't know I mean, making a rebirth must be appealing to the old fans so it is succesful and of course, loyal to the original story.

This case was pretty detoured as it was loyal in the claw concept but not in the setting or character itself.

In cases like Street Fighter IV or Punch-Out!1 they are both games that are loyal to the original concept and characters, and that is why they are succesful as remakes or sequels. If only the same character was like in Rearmed (y'know, like a redhead Duke Nukem) it could have made much more sense. Or actually, fuck that, they should have just made a more detailed version of Rearmed without the crappy melee system this one got.

I figured this game would suck for some random reason. I really liked the preview vid they gave us a while back, but something was off.

If they remake this in 5 years, they can just use the inFamous engine.

It looked alright to start, but then more details came out for it, mostly bad such as the guns and my expectations started to dwindle. I'd comment how it was likely that it was because of Grin that the game was meh, and how their track record isn't the greatest along with how much they suck. But someone already did the latter for me.

The reviews, so far, seem rather harsh.
Then again, that's the point of a review. To give an honest, unbiased opinion.
Man, I'm so disappointed, from the reviews I've read. This game has failed to deliver. Failed to deliver to the old fans and the new fans alike.
I did buy Punch Out!! instead of this, almost having to flip a coin to decide. I believe I made the right choice.
Yet, I'm not giving into the mixed reviews, although I do appreciate them. I will give Bionic Commando a grappling chance, for myself.
As was with RE:5, I enjoyed the game a helluva lot more then the reviews gave it credit for.
In Capcom I trust.

Honestly, I had a bad feeling in my gut about the whole thing when I saw the dreds... Didn't keep me from buying the action figure, but I still don't understand why they had to exist.

I was really hoping we'd be getting another Sands of Time on this one. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

"I knew this would be bad as soon as I saw Nathan Spencer. He is honestly one of the worst designed heroes of the decade."

I knew it from day 1 that when they went for that super "macho" bullshit, the character was gonna be a stale one. One thing I really enjoyed about Rearmed was Nathan's cocky attitude and sly remarks. It might sound weird, but his hair added something there too, flair, character, etc.

Well, this about lines up with what I was expecting. If I'm not mistaken, BC:Rearmed sold pretty well. I predict this game will not, which will hopefully send a message to developers that yes, we want retro revivals, updated graphics like rearmed with 2.5D, ragdoll, etc., but don't try to go this far with it. We love shit like Megaman 9, Galaga Legions, or probably the best example is the new Punch Out!! That's the way to bring back/update a classic.

I've been playing the game for a bit. It's not perfect but it suceeds in two major places.
Swinging REALLY works. It's great fun and you can pull off some really great Ariel moves.
Combat is really satisfying and varied. I'm sure you could probably just do the same few moves over and over but utilising your environment to strike, retreat and then attack from a different angle is just great (seriously pooping down from a platform and popping up the other side while the grunts are still running towards where you first jumped off never gets old).

Stuff I don't like.
Radiation blocking in the levels. Sometimes where it limits you just doesn't seem to make much sense and can fuck you over real fast.
Collecting tokens is great fun but since your body has to touch them (can't grab them with bionic arm and the arm swinging through them doesn't count) some of the tokens can be a real exercise in frustration(especially those hanging in the middle of a wide open space requiring rather precise jumps to reach).

Can't say that I totally disagree with the review, but I still find myself rather enjoying BC. Of course, I paid nowhere near full price for the game and will probably end up trading it later... but still, it's a fun little romp, even with the cheap deaths and occasional annoying enemy encounters.

I guess a rental sounds like a fair suggestion for most, though.

I had low expectations but bought the game anyways, I've been wanting something to swing around in since Spiderman 2. Grim nailed swinging, it's just so rewarding pulling off some crazy sequence of swings.

As for multiplayer, free for all deathmatch just plain sucks just like every game that has that mode. Team deathmatch fares a bit better. CTF now we're talking. Objective based multiplayer combined with the arm is where it's at. Swinging with the flag while having 3 guys chasing you and trying to shoot you down is just so much fun.

I really hope they give us some really good DLC like a huge playroom or something like the mirror's edge dlc.

Anyways, don't knock it until you've tried it. The learning curve is pretty steep for the swinging so keep at it. Best thing to do is to create a private multiplayer room and just swing yourself all over.

@ I loved the multi-player demo, so I'll have to disagree that the Deathmatch is just a throwaway variant.

How this title is so lacking in charm compared to REARMED is mystifying. I blame the gamers that are always crying for richer story lines in games. As for the linearity of the level design, that seems so contrary to the huge swinging within city concept I'm hoping all the reviews are being overly harsh.
I'll still be picking this up in a month or two.
They need to make a sequel (a proper one in 2D) to REARMED.

I love looking at the comments, because many of them are denouncing the poor review. And it seems to me that this game shines to different people. I happen to love the game.

The game my take itself seriously but honestly it's just fun.

I mean, the review complains he can only carry two guns at a time... and thats pretty much the standard now right? I mean it's not like he can dual wield using the arm...

The story take a back seat to the game play which honestly, is fine for me.
And what the hell were you expecting? It's a sequel to freaking bionic commando on the NES. It has that "It came from the 80's kinda feel to it"d

And the limitations, such as the water, and the radiation may seem like cop outs but many games like this start out with limitations and become better in the sequels. As for the combat, it's... pretty standard with the shooting so I don't see what the hell the problem is. I personally really like kiting and throwing enemys into each other. I actually find myself prefering to use the bionic arm than shooting them.

The multiplayer is a blast if you get the right group of people who know how to swing.

I know it's not the best game in the world but it's definitely not a 5, I'd give it a 7 or an 8.

Blaming Grin for the way this game turned out isn't entirely accurate. Capcom (and in particular, Ben Judd) had a lot more to do with overseeing BC 3D than they did Rearmed, which was spearheaded by Grin's Simon Vicklund.

If Simon had directed this as well, instead of just handling the game's music (which is awesome BTW), I'm sure we would have had a much better game.
