I agree that the multiplayer is a wasted mess and doesn't get even close to the potential it could have reached.
The story has to accommodate the character "design" so of course the dude can't crack a smile. The levels look no fun either with nothing memorable going on. It's like a recycle of the faceless Gears of War world but at least that game put a giant worm in it.
What happened? The original game is a silly concept. Re-armed succeeds because the team who made it realized this. Radd (as far as I'm concerned Nathan and Radd are separate characters) is so much of an 80's action movie star you can't help but love the guy. The game itself also realizes the silliness with the funny messages, sweet references, and crazy bosses. Though all that tongue-in-cheek humor there is a sense of seriousness to keep the game grounded and Radd ends the a true hero.
This game bombs (as the review suggests) because it has none of that humor. For ****'s sake, you have a character who formerly went by the name of Radd (the review states that his commanding officer is still called Super Joe) who has a Bionic Arm and fights Nazi allegory enemies with it and previously blew up a cloned Hitler. What's not to laugh about?
I get the feeling that there were two teams here: One who understood the original game (team 1) and made a faithful recreation of it with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor for the fans and new players and another team (2) who didn't get the joke.
Hopefully a sequel will either be made by team 1 or somebody can send team two some Louis C.K. DVD's and some Stallone/Willis/Schwarzenegger movies so they can learn to laugh.
This case was pretty detoured as it was loyal in the claw concept but not in the setting or character itself.
In cases like Street Fighter IV or Punch-Out!1 they are both games that are loyal to the original concept and characters, and that is why they are succesful as remakes or sequels. If only the same character was like in Rearmed (y'know, like a redhead Duke Nukem) it could have made much more sense. Or actually, fuck that, they should have just made a more detailed version of Rearmed without the crappy melee system this one got.
If they remake this in 5 years, they can just use the inFamous engine.
Good thing i didn't buy it, sorry for those who did.
Then again, that's the point of a review. To give an honest, unbiased opinion.
Man, I'm so disappointed, from the reviews I've read. This game has failed to deliver. Failed to deliver to the old fans and the new fans alike.
I did buy Punch Out!! instead of this, almost having to flip a coin to decide. I believe I made the right choice.
Yet, I'm not giving into the mixed reviews, although I do appreciate them. I will give Bionic Commando a grappling chance, for myself.
As was with RE:5, I enjoyed the game a helluva lot more then the reviews gave it credit for.
In Capcom I trust.
I was really hoping we'd be getting another Sands of Time on this one. Can't win 'em all, I guess.
I knew it from day 1 that when they went for that super "macho" bullshit, the character was gonna be a stale one. One thing I really enjoyed about Rearmed was Nathan's cocky attitude and sly remarks. It might sound weird, but his hair added something there too, flair, character, etc.
Swinging REALLY works. It's great fun and you can pull off some really great Ariel moves.
Combat is really satisfying and varied. I'm sure you could probably just do the same few moves over and over but utilising your environment to strike, retreat and then attack from a different angle is just great (seriously pooping down from a platform and popping up the other side while the grunts are still running towards where you first jumped off never gets old).
Stuff I don't like.
Radiation blocking in the levels. Sometimes where it limits you just doesn't seem to make much sense and can fuck you over real fast.
Collecting tokens is great fun but since your body has to touch them (can't grab them with bionic arm and the arm swinging through them doesn't count) some of the tokens can be a real exercise in frustration(especially those hanging in the middle of a wide open space requiring rather precise jumps to reach).
I guess a rental sounds like a fair suggestion for most, though.
As for multiplayer, free for all deathmatch just plain sucks just like every game that has that mode. Team deathmatch fares a bit better. CTF now we're talking. Objective based multiplayer combined with the arm is where it's at. Swinging with the flag while having 3 guys chasing you and trying to shoot you down is just so much fun.
I really hope they give us some really good DLC like a huge playroom or something like the mirror's edge dlc.
Anyways, don't knock it until you've tried it. The learning curve is pretty steep for the swinging so keep at it. Best thing to do is to create a private multiplayer room and just swing yourself all over.
@ I loved the multi-player demo, so I'll have to disagree that the Deathmatch is just a throwaway variant.
I'll still be picking this up in a month or two.
They need to make a sequel (a proper one in 2D) to REARMED.
The game my take itself seriously but honestly it's just fun.
I mean, the review complains he can only carry two guns at a time... and thats pretty much the standard now right? I mean it's not like he can dual wield using the arm...
The story take a back seat to the game play which honestly, is fine for me.
And what the hell were you expecting? It's a sequel to freaking bionic commando on the NES. It has that "It came from the 80's kinda feel to it"d
And the limitations, such as the water, and the radiation may seem like cop outs but many games like this start out with limitations and become better in the sequels. As for the combat, it's... pretty standard with the shooting so I don't see what the hell the problem is. I personally really like kiting and throwing enemys into each other. I actually find myself prefering to use the bionic arm than shooting them.
The multiplayer is a blast if you get the right group of people who know how to swing.
I know it's not the best game in the world but it's definitely not a 5, I'd give it a 7 or an 8.
If Simon had directed this as well, instead of just handling the game's music (which is awesome BTW), I'm sure we would have had a much better game.
