Review: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 photo

For a few reasons, more people are flocking towards EA DICE and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 than ever showed up to cheer on the original Bad Company. The big factor, as far as I can tell, directly relates to a certain other big-name first-person shooter losing a portion of its following because of some sketchy decisions that were made.

More importantly, Bad Company 2 looked promising from the moment we caught our very first glimpse. That's what it's really about; forget the politics, just this once. Most of us played either the demo or the beta and realized, hey, this pretty much lives up to our expectations. Imagine that!

Of course, there is a reason why the single-player hasn't been mentioned much. You'll find out what I'm talking about in a few seconds, if you'd kindly continue reading past the break.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Xbox 360 [reviewed], PlayStation 3, PC)
Developer: EA DICE
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Released: March 2, 2010
MSRP: $59.99

Where do you begin when talking about a game like Battlefield: Bad Company 2? Its rather traditional first-person shooter single-player campaign, or the part everyone seems to truly play it for, the multiplayer component? Let me rephrase that. Which do you want first -- the good news, or the bad?

Bad Company 2 starts off rather unpredictably. A part of me doesn't want to spoil it, but my other half thinks it would be unfair to pass on talking about one of the few great story moments. Without going into much detail, let's just say the entire introductory level takes place during World War II. Even as someone who openly hates on WWII-era shooters, I legitimately enjoyed the prologue; DICE makes it work, against all odds.

Of course, they didn't randomly include this opening segment for no reason -- it ties into the modern-day story, which has Russia and the United States in conflict. For anyone who's played Modern Warfare 2 (look, I made it this far before dropping those words!), think less insane moments. Somehow, Bad Company 2, even with its lighthearted approach to war in today's day and age, feels more grounded in reality.

Now, here's where we get to the not-so-nice parts. The story itself is admittedly one-dimensional. You'll often find yourself wondering what your motivation for fighting really is. This is made slightly less apparent by the funny dialogue (we're talking "videogame funny," here) in cut scenes and during the in-game action.

Even though the campaign is oh, a good eight hours long -- depending on how badly the often annoyingly located checkpoints screw you over -- and the locales are mixed up at a pretty decent rate, it's simply not enough. Genuinely cool action sequences are too few and far between. It all feels like an episode of the A-Team that drags on just a bit too long.

What's weird about the story -- well, this is a Battlefield game, so maybe not -- is how much everything except for the prologue and the final moments feels like an afterthought. I get the immediate impression that DICE was focused solely on providing a stellar multiplayer experience, and then tended to the single-player portion on occasion. If nothing else, this is what you should take away from my review. Sorry, single-player guys, but this one isn't going to do much for you.

Alright, you still here? Apologies if the beginning portion scared you off; it gets better, trust me. Without a doubt, Bad Company 2's multiplayer is enough of a reason to be interested in the game. Simply put, it's phenomenal. Even if, like me, you are relatively new to the series (I've only played Battlefield 1943), you need to get in on this fun.

Apart from the story's nicely written main characters and the wonderful orchestral work done by Mikael Karlsson, every good element from the single-player can be found in multiplayer -- and more often than not, it's implemented better. The best example of this is the destructible environments.

No, the destruction in Bad Company 2 is not the greatest we've seen in videogames. But as far as multiplayer shooters go, the level of depth is great enough to impact the way other players behave, and hopefully, the way you react; otherwise, you won't last long at all. If you aren't blowing open a wall to get the jump on an enemy player who is destroying your M-COM station, you're doing it wrong. Unfortunately, this urgency is never really stressed throughout the single-player enough to feel significant.

As for the sound design, the mere fact that I'm talking about it in depth should prove to you how tremendous it is. Usually an afterthought when it comes to reviews, I'd be a fool to not make mention of it. For once, firing a gun sounds like it should -- immensely loud and satisfying.

With or without surround sound, you get a true sense of where in the map the firefights are taking place. Hearing shots way out in the distance is not only a neat audio effect, it's also super helpful.

Like all good multiplayer shooters, Bad Company 2 has plenty to keep you interested in grinding away at battle after battle. While the three main modes -- Rush, Conquest, and Squad Deathmatch (along with the GameStop-exclusive Squad Rush) -- seemingly never get old, you better believe there's XP and unlockables to incentivize steady participation.

There are four distinct classes to pick from (Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Medic), each with their own class-specific weapons and abilities. Thankfully, there are also plenty of non-class-specific items that help make customization something you can easily do on the fly as you wait to respawn during a match.

The choice to have fewer, more refined classes was definitely a wise one. With Bad Company 2's emphasis on team-centric multiplayer, everything meshes nicely. There's nothing quite like having one person in your squad infiltrate the enemy base, then using squad spawn to appear a few feet behind them and take a handful of enemies out in a matter of seconds.

The leveling system is deliberately slower than what you might be used to, but it works. Sure, you won't be leveling up every two, three, or even four matches, but you're constantly being handed something new. Every step of the way, it feels like you are making tangible progress.

I can go on and on all day about how great the multiplayer in Bad Company 2 is, and I kind of already have. With that in mind, the one last thing I want to stress is this: balance. I have no idea how DICE was able to pull it off -- luck or otherwise -- but the balancing of the guns, the classes, and even the maps is good. Really, really good.

It's all too common to be in a Rush match with less than ten team respawns left only to miraculously come back and win the game moments later. I keep waiting for someone to find a cheap exploit of sorts and prove me wrong -- like a ridiculously overpowered class setup -- but so far, nothing.

About the only negative I can come up with is the vehicle controls, which are not exactly terrific. "Unusual" sums the experience up quite nicely. The more simple ones, such as the ATVs, are fine. Too fast for their own good, rendering them a blast to ride, but fine nonetheless. Helicopters? Talk about a deep learning curve. You will crash a helicopter during your first attempt at piloting one; this is fact. For series veterans, none of this is news, however.

As hyperbolic as this may sound, Bad Company 2 provides some of the best team-based multiplayer around. It's an utter shame that the single-player is only decent at best (even that is being generous) -- otherwise, we'd have a real winner on our hands.

Whether the game is worth purchasing entirely depends on how interested you are in owning another online first-person shooter. Bad Company 2 is undeniably going to contain the next big multiplayer scene for some time to come. If you are interested, even slightly, absolutely buy this game. Stop reading this review right this second and go get it; don't even look at the score. Everyone else, especially those of you who are strictly into gaming by yourself, it's simply not right for you.

Score: 8.5 -- Great (8s are impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.)

Yeah, the single-player is far more disappointing than the first one. They changed the tone entirely, and it's just a typical war-zone story now, rather than the first game's "Let's tear around a war zone in a golf cart listening to surf rock" tone. But the multiplayer has been perfected. I'm hooked in a big way.

Nice review. Absolutely loved the first game, so more of the same with improvements is good for me. Great alternative to those sick of MW2.

Damn, can't get a copy til next week.

Maybe I just haven't gotten into it yet (or because I haven't been able to stay connected to the servers for more than 5 minutes), but I find the online boring. I guess I suck, but it's a rare instance when I actually see someone before they kill me.

I was about to ask how I go about finding out if this game was going to be reviewed or not. I don't work well as a team on multiplayer online shooter games and like the free for all, but I'm learning. Maybe I'll pick this up after an initial price cut.

My big complaint at the moment is that the Medic class doesn't start with a medkit unlocked. Basically, I was stuck playing a crappy assault guy for a couple rounds to unlock the one differentiating feature of my class, and then will always feel about 1500 points behind.

Otherwise, past some server inconsistencies, it's great.

I will pick this up when STEAM has a sale for it.

It just doesn't seem worth it for just multiplayer when I look at the 500+ hours I have put into TF2 which is 20 bucks now (I got it in the orange box) and is always on sale, for even as low as 2 bucks.

8.5 OMG THIS IS SO PS3 BIAS MODERN WARFARE RULZ

I kid.

Good game I happened to like the first Bad Company and the multiplayer and single player are pretty solid. The destructible environments although tactical and very good for gameplay just wasn't the step up from Bad Company. Sure its cool to spawn after attacking in a blast zone with demolished houses and holes everywhere but when your bring the houses down its not like they fall where you hit them. Just after a bit of damaged they animate a fall and then change... disappointing.

I agree with this 100%. I started the game with the single player, like I usually do, and played through the first four missions. It got boring pretty quickly.

I jumped online, and the experience was completely different. This is the most exhilirating console fps I've played. The game modes force teamwork, so even without voice communication, you'll often find yourself teamed up with a couple squad mates taking care of objectives together,

I can't believe what a huge step up from the first one this is. I sincerely recommend this to every fps fan.

I just wish the single player was a little better because I want all the trophies, however, taking into account the multiplayer only, this game is worth full retail.

@Jozo: I don't know if there is anything wrong with it. It just bored me. COD4,WAW,MW2. I tried really hard to like all of them, but it just got extremely boring. Which is sad, because I still play the original Gears of War multiplayer every Friday night.

get MAG. I've only played this online a small bit, but the whole time I wished I was playing MAG. And after constantly getting disconnected from this game, I popped in MAG and had a lot more fun. I'm sure I just haven't gotten into this yet, but the matches I was in didn't seem to have a lot of teamwork going on.

Just once I would love to see a multiplatform game not say "Xbox (Version Reviewed)".

I mean, I know it is the most popular version, but really? I mean, some variance isn't exactly the worst thing, especially in a game like this which has distinct differences on seperate platforms, as in dedicated servers and larger player count.

In any case, this game's multiplayer is about 10 times better than Modern Warfar for ME personally. Anyone who wants a bit more strategy and depth to their multi should grab it.

Campaign is ok.

I don't particularly like 'realistic'/military FPS games multiplayer. None of the Call of Duty games, MW or otherwise, have kept my interest past single player campaign. Even the previous Battlefield games were quite boring to me, but Goddamn, this game is incredibly fun. I've probably poured 20 hours into the PC beta/360 demo alone, and was eager to eat up more when the game actually came out.

Shame about the single player, though.

I like the single player campaign... the characters are great when you sit there and listen to their idle chatter. I just really liked the open feeling to most of the levels and I am enjoying the physics on the enemies and the environments. It really feels like there is some weight behind the guns and overall... it just felt less like a syringe full of testosterone to the face and more like an entertaining ride. There's just something about this game that gives it more soul than MW2 and whatever it is, I like it. Don't be turned off by the single player, just take it for what it is and you'll have a great time with it.

I haven't even been online with it yet. I can't wait to give it a try. :)

Great review!

I still don't understand why multiplayer gets treated like a second-rate citizen in video game reviews. Who cares if the single player blows when the multiplayer is so good.

Reading current video game reviews, I often get the impression that the original Battlefield 1942 would have received middling reviews because its single player is practically non-existent.

To me, docking a Battlefield game points for having a poor single player experience would be like docking an MMORPG points for having a poor single player experience.

See I've been hearing that the Bad Company series is funny, and I like that. It's something different from a war game and a total contrast to the serious(ly annoying) gruff british voiceover in MW2. "UAV online" never sounded so pretentious. So atleast I gotta give kudos to Bad Company 2 having SOME video game funny in it.

"As for the sound design, the mere fact that I'm talking about it in depth..."

You must have left that paragraph out. There's no in depth talk about the multiple audio options ("War Tapes" being far and away the best) or anything else except some lip service "it's neat".

As for multiplayer, it's bordering on a failure. When everyone is playing as a team and actually spotting bad guys, the game clicks and a cooperative team can beat a more skilled team. In those instances, BC2 is fantastic and it's a great time. However, a good percentage of the players are suffering from sniper-itus on conquest and rush modes. Every game, 4-8 players will be hiding on a ridge trying to "cover" the remaining 4 guys trying to fight off tanks, copters, 50 cal guns, and plant bombs. Don't even bother with the Hardcore modes because no one is actually playing, just sniping. Even worse are the COD morons who turn into Rambo and don't spot for the team, don't join squads, and try to lone wolf every match.

The worst part of all is that people aren't playing their class. Medics are supposed to be reviving and throwing down health boxes, not running around like the Assault class burning through ammo with their LMG. Recon guys ignore the C4 and increased field of view for spotting and instead sit in a bush preserving the K/D ratio, while the team loses. Assault and Engineer are the only two classes people seem to know understand how to play.

I see where your coming from, but I don't think the multiplayer is getting shafted here. Since DICE decided to include a single player campaign, which I personally liked better then Jordan did, it should be up polished to the same level as the multiplayer, but it's just not.

Even if elements of a game are really good, they don't excuse the poorer elements of the game and that should be reflected in the reviews.

Either way, DICE produced a great game and should be applauded for showing MW2 how to do multiplayer.

I'll agree with that score, given some thought. It sounds about right for a game that relies heavily on the MP and has a "decent" singleplayer.
Personally, I'd have preferred more content for multiplayer instead of an SP campaign, but eh, the SP is enjoyable at least.

Now, about those "CANNOT CONNECT TO EA SERVER" errors...

You do have to give people a little bit of time. The multiplayer, superficially, looks a lot like MW2. The game has just barely been out for a few days, and many people are picking it up. Maybe I'm just optimistic, but I think once people start to realize that chilling out sniping isn't going to win them any matches unless the sniping is strategic, I think they'll start to change their tune.

There are the kids who just care about their KDR, though, and that may continue to be a problem.

I don't understand the obsession with KDR. Maybe it's just because mine's lousy, but in a game like BC2, especially in Rush mode, KDR means absolutely nothing. It's okay, i suppose as an indicator of personal skill, but the game is team-based, and personal skill doesn't mean as much if you can't operate as a team. A well organized, half-decent team will beat out a disorganized team of MW2 veterans any day.

I guess people like raw numbers to denote their skill, and match win/loss isn't as great of an indicator as KDR, since a match loss can always be blamed on a "lousy team," regardless of the fact that the team was probably lousy because you were busy sniping up your KDR.

I wish they'd remove KDR from stats.

Like Steel Squirrel mentioned, one of the best parts of single player is sitting and listening to the idle chatter; for example, Haggard's grandmother likes to do bong hits. Fucking hilarious.

Obviously, the multiplayer, well Rush anyway, is awesome; just have to wait for the sucky deathmatchers to leave after a month or two, as with all Battlefield games.

Would it be strange if I said that no single-player would have gotten this game a higher score in all probability? :P

I mean, you're basically saying that this is about the best multiplayer thing eve(!!11!), so why are you pulling it down for it's (you said it yourself) tacked on singleplayer? Not that there's anything wrong with the score (games are getting HUGE scores nowadays, it's crazy), just a quick remark.

I found the singleplayer ok myself btw. The squad dialogue is fantastic and basically the thing that kept me playing. I could care less about shooting people in the face for the 12498759th time.
