They don't make enough single player japanese-y games these days that I am going to buy it just to support more in the future.
As in anything one man's garbage is another's filet mignon......it is good that you can rent games because without that I think games like this get buried.
Maybe re-read the review I gave, where I said it was good.
Then try again. <3
Also to anyone who is using this review alone as a reason to or not to buy the game, here are some second opinions. http://kotaku.com/5886949/game-critics-say-asuras-wrath-is-definitely-one-to-watch
Heavy Rain with better writing is still Heavy Rain in mechanics.
*shudder*
The amount of QTE's alone is enough to knock it down a bunch in my book, even if they're sort of fun to play out -Fun doesn't mean gameplay really need to be sacrificed.
Overall, Not all that surprised that it got a 5, and I'll probably pick it up one day, when my backlog is a bit tamer. (Its over 20 games strong right now, however).

I was already clicking back on reflex. DToid still hasn't broken their habit.
Sure, they're both heavily (ha!) story based, but Asura's Wrath is an action game and the controls are not awkward in the slightest. Also the writing in Asura's Wrath is not terrible or filled with plot holes.
And I died all the time in FF XIII, at least at the end.
Or do you think the "Game Over - retry" screen isn't a game over screen?
And how could you not die by enemies two hitting you? Were you always just in Tank setup and did defeat your enemies by fighting 1 hour fights?
@ TekBunny
Yeah, but the guy that did FF6 and FF7 doesn't work there anymore and made "The Last Story" for Wii.
You said exactly what I was going to say to both Alexander and Tek, haha
@Jim
Thanks for the review. Glad to know that the different gameplay types are as disjointed as I had feared, but I will most likely play this at some point.
Just curious, though, what did you mean by "arrogant credit sequences thrown into each one"? I don't get the 'arrogant' part. As I understand it, the game was meant to be a shonen anime with some gameplay involved. What is arrogant about including credits to separate the different episodes, which helps get this point across?
I really don't mind long cutscenes, just means you have to be in the right mood to 'play' it. When I played through Metal Gear Solid 3, I often found myself hoping/fiending for a cutscene to stop the gameplay, that totally was more of a movie to me with gameplay teetering on interfering.
I completely agree with Jennifer Hepler.
Not gonna touch this, thanks Jim.
Because I was dying of laughter at one point in the fight against Augus. The battles look sloppy, but the cinematics were just over the top GAR porn and it was a treat to watch.
Shame about this one, though. I had my doubts on it which weren't helped by the news of DLC already on the way for it (meaning Capcom is showing their old face of releasing a game despite quality then pooping out some DLC to charge more on an otherwise unpolished game.) Makes me think they should iron out the problems in the core game before even thinking DLC.
Most of Jim issues I have already played/seen in the demos and they either don't bother me, not to mention I disagree with the QTE complaints on the whole as I have so far found they work very very well.
Good review however from my current experience I would have rated it higher.
"Also the writing in Asura's Wrath is not terrible or filled with plot holes."
Heavy Rain's story is not so stupid either. People are just not able to do proper research or apply common sense to fill in the open questions (open question ≠ plot hole) these days.
If you have the time read this document:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13946521/Public/Heavy%20Rain%20Story.pdf
It should resolve most of the "plot holes" that are constantly mentioned around the internet. Maybe u think I'm a fanboy, but I'm not, I just want to point out where people are wrong.
Yeah, this is the thing, though.
Whether it be a book, movie or game, all the answers should be there.
People needing an external document to figure out wtf is going on points towards bad writing.
Fair enough. You made a good point there. But you have to realize, that it must be very hard to achieve that, when you have multiple endings and changes in scenes midgame. When a character dies, I can imagine that it's not that easy to tell every detail about them in some other way.
But the excuse is not perfect I know.
Still, some of the things mentioned in my document can be explained in every case by everybody that thinks about it for more then one second.
@Jim Sterling
Maybe you are also interested in taking a look. I know my english is not perfect, but it should be OK. I explain the biggest gripe you had with the story: The Origami Killer. It's a shame of course, that the parts which explain it are not in everybodys run of the game. But at least there is a possible and good explanation available, so David Cage isn't a complete fool when it comes to the story department.
