Review: Alien Swarm

Review: Alien Swarm photo

Undoubtedly one of the biggest recent releases in the PC gaming arena has been this little game. No, it wasn't a Triple-A, hotly anticipated, big budget game. Alien Swarm generated headlines because it was free despite being a rather substantial game, which is more than enough to be considered a big release.

Is it enough to just be free, though? Is Alien Swarm a good game with an absolute bargain of an offer, or is there a good reason why this title costs nothing? Read on as we find out whether Alien Swarm is worth your time, even if it's not worth your money.

Alien Swarm (PC)
Developer: Valve
Publisher: Valve
Released: July 19, 2010
MSRP: Free

Alien Swarm is a four-player co-op top-down shooter, and that's a lot of hyphens. As the name implies, the game's main focus is on cutting down relentless armies of extraterrestrial fiends who have wiped out a planetary colony. As one of several eclectic marines, players arm themselves with assault rifles and shotguns to take on a teeming mass of bug-like monsters.

On paper, the game sounds a lot like Aliens, and that's because it basically is. That's not a bad thing, however, and Alien Swarm does an impressive job of making players feel like they're in the classic James Cameron movie despite the original creature designs. From the wave-based attacks to the hard sci-fi environments to the ever-satisfying use of sentry guns, Alien Swarm is a classic bug hunt in the purest sense of the word. You'll almost wish some real Xenomorphs were there.

At its core, Alien Swarm is a classic shooter where running-and-gunning is the key to victory. Each map has a set of simple objectives that must be completed before the way to the exit is clear, and the game more or less remains the same from beginning to end, save for new enemies with rudimentary weak points. Some players may find the game repetitive, but those with a love of simple shooters will know what to expect, and will leave the game satisfied.

The fundamental shooting gameplay has been given a little depth thanks to a class and ranking system. There are four classes to choose from -- Officer, Special Weapons, Medic and Tech. Each class has access to unique equipment and some levels actually require the presence of a certain class. The use of classes is crucial, as success can sometimes hinge on co-ordinating roles with the other players so there's an equal mix of offense and support. A good Medic who focuses on healing more than scoring kills, for instance, can make all the difference between success and death.

Experience points are collected after each mission and as players gain in level, they'll unlock new weapons and secondary items of varying degrees of use. Customization is limited and players won't feel like they have a completely unique character, but the ability to pick and choose different weapons to find the loadout that suits their playstyle is a very welcome addition and the new toys give players something to keep fighting for.

Alien Swarm is a fun and addictive shooter, but it's not without its issues. In a wave-based shooter, the last thing players need to worry about is ammo conservation, but weapons and abilities can run very dry very quickly. As the game goes on, it actively tries to waste precious resources as well, with things like Infestation Parasites that require huge amounts of Medic supplies to be destroyed. A player with an ammo dump is always useful, but even they fail to account for how much the game can drain one's ability to fight.

Some of the hit detection can be a little off as well. Aiming melee attacks is unnecessarily difficult, and it seems that aliens can often hit players even if their attacks appear well out of range. The presence of friendly fire seems counter-intuitive in this kind of game as well, especially on the harder difficulties where your own players end up as just a big a risk as the aliens.

Being based off the Source Engine, Alien Swarm looks pretty damn good despite missing the bells and whistles from bigger titles. Lighting effects and good character designs help the visuals greatly, although the same can't be said for the rather muted and uninspired sound effects, which go a little way to making the game feel slower and less exciting than it perhaps could have done.

Despite the issues of repetition and somewhat contrary design choices, Alien Swarm is an enjoyable shooter at an absolute steal of a non-price. Even if you grow bored of it in five minutes, that's five minutes of free entertainment, and many players will doubtless be hooked on Alien Swarm's relentless and often challenging levels for much longer than that. It's not the greatest game in the world, but it's damn solid, damn fun, and damn well worth your time.

Score: 7.5 -- Good (7s are solid games that definitely have an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.)

But really, I just dont like how i have to wait long amounts of time when i create my own room. Still a great game, especially with the achievments.

Really wanna try this out! I am glad enough the Source engine is having a new use besides first-person perspective games. This could trigger new ideas to other developers and Source SDK junkies.

I am aware this is based on an already existing game from many years ago but that is besides the point as the topic has been beaten to death.

I played the game for about 30 minutes. It was fun for free, but I don't think I'll be back to it until some good mods come out.

I agree, although I'd be more inclined to give it an 8. I've sunk 16.7 hours into it so far and still going strong. With friends this is a brilliant game and I love how friendly fire and especially the teamwork, typical in any Valve game, shines through. Better yet, some of my friends who have never had Steam and don't play computer games are now picking this up, making the experience even better. Quality game and I recommend it to anybody, whether it's hardcore PC gamers or newcomers (although starting on Easy is a must!).

Jim, are you going to be reviewing Starcraft II? (kinda off topic). But anyway, good review, and I agree with your points

I feel the same about the parasites. They are far to difficult to detach once they get on a marine, and usually they're dead before you've got the chance to heal them. Good review.

I love this game. I absolutely loved that, for once, everyone on my Steam Friend's list were able to play the same game. And we all had a crazy, chaotic, FREE, blast.

I look forward to new content for this!

It's definitely a fun but flawed game, that's for sure. Good review.

My favorite feature though has got to be the ability to customize the 'battle' music. Being able to have David Bowie's Space Oddity playing while fighting for your life on an elevator platform while hordes of aliens are crawling up the wall towards you is just epic.

I disagree in that it wouldn't be NEARLY as much replay value if you didn't have to worry about ammo and friendly fire. It would be a lot more mindless if that was the case.

But yeah, it definitely hit the sweet spot for my crowd of TF2/L4D players.

I dont know how you are worried about parasites, i mean yes they can bug you at times, but get to lvl 14 and boom electro armour no infestations.

Well worth the time to play there are new maps being made already.

Aaah, reminds me a lot from good old amiga titles such as alien breed, or later finnish games going by the name Shadowgrounds.

I have to download this and try it with friends! Co-op gaming, Gaming at Best!

the technical issue you can have is on the ping side of the equation. Is a shame that steam does not provide oficial dedicated servers like in left4dead.

I really enjoy the game. My biggest complaint is that it needs a second campaign. The entire game can be finished from end to end in around 2 hours if you go quickly on easy. Of course it is made for harder difficulties with lots of teamwork, but still.

I totally agree that Friendly Fire should be taken out of the game. It just doesn't fit right in this type of game.

I've sunk quite a few hours into this game and love the simplistic yet strategic nature of the gameplay. If you really do plan some stuff out with mates it can get to be some really good fun.

@Wandering: I think they're going to release some new campaigns in the future (judging by the 'campaign list'), but you'll probably have to pay for them.

Yet no mention of the true exciting thing about this game the SDK and mod support. It's always the same when console gamers review things on PC but don't worry there might be some overpriced DLC you can buy later.

I approve of this review, even though I have a few odds about it.

Mainly the hit detection and melee aiming. Both has been working perfectly for me.

Friendly fire is an absolute must for this game as is the resource conservation needed. They help the game achieve a more tense atmosphere. It's not supposed to just be a alien kill fest, it's more of a survival-horror-top-down-shooter.

didn't really feel that the ammo shortage was significant and we were only 3 guys.

maybe in insane difficulty, but thats what you should expect from it.

anyway, really looking forward to more content, it was a really fun experience.

I like the game a lot. The only problem I seem to encounter are just issues related to online co-op gaming in general, specifically playing with people you don't know. There's always at least one jackass who doesn't stick with the group and basically acts like he's speed running the level.

about friendly fire, i think its totality justified, it promotes strategy and positioning making the game more challenging, and thats what you want from a co-op game, at least when you're playing with friends.

Can't go wrong with free.

That said, yeah it gets REALLY boring fast. My biggest complaint with the game is the fact that theres only 1 campaign and it only has 7 levels.

How long do you play a game before reviewing it, Jim? Hardly seems like any time at all, which would certainly explain the low quality.

7.5 if it were $15. For the fun I've had playing it with my brother for free the last few days, I'd give it a 9 and hope for future campaigns.

Friendly fire makes sense to me for this game. It would be a fair bit shallower if it was just smashTV time with four players blasting willy-nilly all over creation. Having to mind your line of fire, as well as that of each of your team members makes the shooting that much more engaging.

Even though Alien Swarm is a top down shooter I found it to be a lot like Left4Dead, but I like the idea of having different ranks and classes it makes things a little more interesting.

That's why I love PC, lots of awesome free stuff on the counterpart to consoles where you pay for some pretty ridiculuous stuff - like for themes or avatar pics (umm, that's just a jpg image, dudes, wtf).
It's a solid title. I could easily imagine it going for 1200 MS points/$15 dollars on XBLA/PSN. There are some balance issues, but those can be easily fixed with patches. (It's Valve after all, it actaully listens to the community).
So, seeing this going for free on Steam really pleases me.

I thought it was great that I jumped in and immediately found a game with three other nice players. So nice in face im actually going to be playin with them again tonight.

I really enjoyed my time on AS, a lot of fun milked out of a free release. Given that it is a fairly short game with a admittedly shallow depth, I would give it around a 7.5 or 8 myself. However, I think some of your points in the review are off Jim.

Ammo and supply attrition is a big part of an "Aliens" experiance. You are supposed to have difficulty balancing between bringing enough firepower to defend yourselves and enough support equipment and classes to keep you going. The swarm is designed to make rushing too fast dangerous, but ideling too cautiously exhausting and self defeating. You need to mix a balanced squad with the appropriate level of aggression to get through the levels (which in themselves vary, some favouring a mad rush while others are best played defensively). Considering ammo and supply attrition was a big factor in even the movie "Aliens" which they are homaging, I would have thought this was obviously intentional.

Friendly fire is required to make this game interesting. Yes, FF can ruin your day if you are paired up with idiots or griefers. But without it, AS would be way too easy. Two heavy weapons guys carrying miniguns and ammo-crates hold down M1 and walk forward. Or everybody grab a flame thrower. I don't think this game would have held anyones attention for more than a level if not for FF. It makes you actually think about what you are doing and what weapons you bring.

In any case, it is a surprisingly quality game for free while worth at least one try. And you get a hat for TF2!
