When the sins of a corrupt organization begin to harm the Earth, a band of rebels steps in to make right of the unspeakable acts caused by the evil corporation known as Shinra. But what begins as a rebellion against an evil empire becomes much more -- namely, a podcast.
As this season's final installment of our Retro Limbo series, tonight we finally record our Final Fantasy VII episode. I'll leave it at that. Your questions are welcome after the jump.

And on a similar note, what do you think it was about VII that made it more "mainstream" than the first 3 Final Fantasy games to hit the US market?
Q:How important do you think the success of FFVII was to JRPG's finding their place in North America, if at all?
P.S. Do you plan on doing other FF games like FFIX or FFVII or FFX?
Materia System: Great System of Greatest system?
People seem to be really attached to the characters from this game. Why do you think that is?
Also seriously people talk about Lara Croft but she has nothing on Tifa
Also do you think it is time to make a remake or is it too soon ?
I myself, can't play it, as the characters make my eyes bleed (thpugh I REALLY wish I could play it)
Finally, why do they promote the hell out of this episode with all these spin-offs ?Why is there no sign of a FF6 sequel or a spin-off since it is one of the best ?
Oh, and one more thing. FF9 > FF7
My theory is that this is due to the fact that it is hugely popular on the one hand and kind of exploited by SquarEnix nowadays on the other hand.
Also FF7 is one of the few games in the series to have its story expanded upon with later releases, do you feel the overall story has been diminished because of this or have they made great additions? What other volumes in the series deserve this treatment?
What was the greatest FFVII spinoff ever?! (Movies or games).
I felt deceived, i felt nausea, i felt that i loved it (but then i realized that i was intentionally liying to myself )i felt that
aeris was a whore, all at the same time.
This game deserves to be praised for its overwhelming innovation, but should also be steped on for its horrible looks and the fact that sephiroth's special attack took more than an hour every time.
i did not feel compelled after finishing it...
am i mad???
(the cutscene that shows a dumb cloud and his friend talking about their future made me think of steinbeck's "Of mice and men," the games only redeeming factor)
Anyway, here's my question. The significant mark that FFVII left on the Final Fantasy franchise is undeniable, regardless of where one feels about how it compares to the other eleven main games. Of the changes in the series that can be traced back to FFVII, what change do you like the most and what change do you like the least? This can be any component of the games: gameplay, story, character design and development, music, etc.
My biggest problem with 7 is that I DON'T like many of the characters. For instance, Cloud is a brick. Who are you're favorite two characters (personality wise) from 7? And who did you always have in your party?
Here's an example of one idiot who didn't apparently understand the ending of the game; http://kotaku.com/5269159/final-fantasy-vii-advent-children-complete-in-15-minutes
"The opening scene is the ending scene from Final Fantasy VII if you sat through the credits. Red XIII and his inexplicable progeny (since Red XIII was supposedly the last of his kind) race up to a destroyed Midgar, implying that Cloud's efforts to save the planet from "rock falls, everybody dies" syndrome were unsuccessful."
Yes. That indeed was the ending of the game. If you were huffing paint thinner at the time you were watching it.
Tools like these, and tools similar to these get to have an opinion. How can you trust a moron to have a valid opinion on the rest of the work, if they weren't capable enough to understand the obvious things about it, let alone the underlying themes?
How does this make you feel podcast panel? Are you one of them? How do you know you're not?
How do we go about deciding who has a valid opinion (negative or positive), and who is full of unbridled shit because they deserve to be in a mental institution due to the mental trauma they suffered by falling off the jungle-gym when they were a child?
I guess these aren't Final Fantasy VII questions at all.
My bad.
Then I start again.
Also, Chad Sprite. :)
I bet everything Chad touchs turns to sugar and only a quiet unnerved stare by Topher can bring it back to life.
Also: I played FFVII, when it came out on the PC back in (?). When I was like 50 hours or so into the game, I had a complete harddrive meltdown and could not bring myself to replay it afterwards. That was sad.
Q: Does anyone of you guys think that there is something that you really hate about the game (be it gameplay, graphics or story related) that if it wasn't because it's named final fantasy you wouldn't have gave this game even a chance?
Also Also: out of curiosity, how would you have felt if [that character who died]'s death had been given away before you played the game? I was mega pissed that my boyfriend's brother just yelled it out to me as I was playing for the first time. I didn't feel much when it happened because of it, and feel like I missed out on a significant portion of the game - I'm not NEARLY as attached to FFVII as I am to say, FFVIII, because I braced myself for that moment - everyone else I know felt it, deep, and it was really shocking. I just sort of shrugged my shoulders and didn't feel much of a loss because I had been purposefully not using the character as much so I didn't get attached.
How much did I miss out?
Also Also: The original storyline was pretty classic - we can all probably think of a few examples of the megacorporation/class division/rebellion/tragic hero stories. But it is way more complicated now than it was then - what with the new games, movie, etc. They've strayed a lot, gone into character development a little more, told some history with Crisis Core. How do you think they've maintained integrity with story and character development?
I also just wanted to say that this game was my first RPG experience in 1998, but I didn't love it. That wasn't until FF6 which I played in 2000/2001. PLEASE talk about that one next!!
Really? REALLY?!
2.) Has Final Fantasy VII's change in character design had a positive or negative impact on the series? Why or why not?
Also, Final Fantasy VI or VII. which is better?
Who's your favorite sub-character? As in, not one that you play as, but just another character in the game. Mine's Rufus ShinRa, with Reno tailing close behind. :3
Who's your most hated character? I think mine is a close tie between Yuffie and Aeris.
Also, do you always make sure to get Vincent when you play through? He's a must for me and I ALWAYS make sure to have him around. Well.. I also don't happen to have a huge wall scroll of him staring at me while I sit at my desk or something.. >.>
Hehe can't wait to hear the show!
OH! One last question:
How big of a mama's boy is Sephiroth compared to Kefka? :D
What were some of the names you guys used, if any? Barrett, for me, will always be Mr. T.
What do you think is going on here Crew? What do you expect will happen in the near future in regards to Nintendo's DLC?
http://digamejh.melankolly.com/online_storage/FF7Musical/
Also, is there any way I can hear Chad yell "Shut Up! Sit your ass down in that chair and DRINK YOUR GODDAMN TEA!" ;3
Also, funny story (well I think it is)
I was at the point where I was finishing the game up trying to do all the side-quest stuff, and got Ruby Weapon. I didn't have Knights of the Round because I didn't have the patience to breed a Golden Chocobo at that point, and had read that dual summoning Hades and Bahamut Zero is an effective alternative then having the rest of the party mimic it. I had started this combo before going to bed, and was slowly whittling him down. I paused the game to sleep, and made some more progress while eating breakfast before leaving for school that morning. Still not having defeated him I paused the game and left. I told my friend (who I was borrowing the game from) what I was in the middle of doing, and he thought it would be funny that after all that, if I got home and summoned Hades/Bahamut one more time it would finish him off...and it just so happened that is exactly what happened. :-|
did any of you change the character names in FF7? and why and to what?
Also, after reading DMV's post on Advent Children being a sort of cathartic release and an outcry to want to leave the series alone, do you still think, that because of fan demand, do you think we will see a remake? Yeah, it's hard to go back to because of the graphics being sometimes atrocious to look at, and if that was all they did, it would be fine. But do you think they'd leave the rest of the game, combat/materia systems alone? Or would they try to shoehorn something else into it?
How come bullets can shoot off Barret's and Dyne's forearms, but a head shot on Cloud only takes out 17 damage?
Also, did you know that Barret's last line in Advent Children is "DATS SUM CRAZY WATER"? Just thought I'd point that out.
For those of you who played previous Final Fantasy games before FF7, how did you react to the change? Did you like it, or did you feel like the grittyness was like pandering to the audience?
How did the hype surrounding this game jade the rest of the RPG industry? Is it possible that the reason everyone loves it so much simply that the game is said to be loved?
I'm not at all suggesting people are sheep, only that familiarity with less popular RPGs wouldn't give you much to talk about with your friends. Why was this game the one everyone agreed to play?
Follow-up question: if seven was only as popular in north america as previous titles, how do you think the developers would have approached eight differently and where would the series be now?
And lastly, why was six afraid of seven?
(because seven has a million fanboys who won't play six because OMG itz teh 2-D)
Did you guys read up on any of the meanings/origins of the names used for any characters? Did your appreciation of any particular name change after doing so?
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so I loved that Nanaki was an anagram for Anakin :)
