RetroforceGO! records episode 92 tonight: E3 09 photo

We're back from E3 -- those of us who got to go, anyway -- and the surprising amount of retro-flavored hotness on display this year has left us with quite a bit to talk about. So that's what we're gonna do. We'll be taking a look at what appealed to us, what got us excited, and most important of all, what we thought was stupid. Oh, there's plenty of that.

It's good to be back. Drop your questions for us in the comments and we'll get this party started.

Are you disappointed in the lack of a DSi virtual console? Could that be something announced around TGS?

I don't have a question, but I just want to hear you guys talk about all the awesome new 2D (and 2.5D) games that were at the show!

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
King of Fighters XII
Shadow Complex
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
OMG awesomeness!!! :D <3

In new Super Mario Bros. Wii there are two Toads instead of one Toad and a Peach!

I guess she's been kidnapped again and that's why she isn't playable, but still I would like to see her pulling up turnips in this game.

Unbreak my heart. Please tell us that the game is so good that we won't miss her.

Also, did you see/play Shadow Complex? Is it good?

If you could trade away one of the announcements for Nintendo's big franchises (either NSMBWii, SMG2, or Metroid: OM) for an announcement for an all-new IP (like Pikmin, when it was actually new), would you? That is to say, in bringing the new IP into existence, you would obliterate the chance of one of the aforementioned games from ever coming out. If so, which game would you take out?

Also, how effing rad is Scribblenauts? How can that game even possibly exist? How does it all fit onto the DS cart? How did they find the time to create artwork and program behavior for all the things they did? It really blows my mind just thinking about it.

How does Dyson feel about the new metroid announcement?

Also, how shortsighted is it to put the word "New" in New Super Mario Brothers Wii? The DS version of the game is no longer new.

Topher, did you weep at the announcement of The Last Guardian? I know how much you love Ico. Also, this past week I was able to play Ico from start to finish and I have to say that it has the most beautiful ending of any video game I have ever played. Thank you so much for piquing my interest on it in the past.

What was the one game that you saw at E3 that you were really excited about before seeing it and are now disappointed in?

Likewise, what was your favorite "surprise hit" at the show?

Before I ask my question, I want to let Topher know that there is currently a Slurpee flavor at 7 Eleven called "Bumblebee Blast." Now, I know that this is technically a promotion for the new Transformers movie, but I'm always going to pretend that this flavor was created in honor of RetroforceGO.

Also, is it me, or is the sight of Mario riding Yoshi as they fly through space together the most disgustingly cute thing you've EVER seen?

A boy and his blob has a hug button. Do you think Chad will actually play the game or just get lost in an infinite loop of hugs?

Will New Super Mario Wii have friendship ending moments (i.e. waterfall level of Contra) or is it too cute?

Hey, I just thought of another question; who do you think will be the 5 extra characters in the US version of Tatsunoko vs Capcom? I'm hoping for Speed Racer, Strider, and the rad version of Bionic Commando.

Golden sun ds! Are you excited for this
New super mario bros wii or mario galaxy 2?
Dyson, does other M look like the metroid 3d game you've been waiting for?
Does anyone actually care about project natal or sony's stick wand thing?
Colette if you got to play silent hill shattered memories does it feel like a silent hill title?
Who would you like to see in tatsunoko vs capcom now that they are adding new characters for the American release.
What did you expect to be announced but wasn't (I.E Fatal frame 4 us, mother 3, pikmin 3)
Did chad and anthony battle it out at any point during E3.
Did you guys meet anyone unexpectedly like chad with miyamoto last year.

With E3 seemingly on the swing back to its former glory, do any of you think that developers are falling back on more retro principles with their games, or at least taking notice of what more old-fashioned gamers want from the experience?

Do you think that there were any games that were understated or didn't get as much coverage as they should have?

What would you like to see from E3 next year? More full-length retail games that follow old-school ideas or a bunch of WiiWare/XBLA/PSN that follow the trend of some of the games we've seen in the past year or so?

Is anybody excited for New Super Mario Bros Wii? Its the first 2d console SMB since the SNES and do you think the local 4-player only is going to hinder it in America. Also, it looked like it was just a ds game upscaled in all the videos I saw. Was that just the streams or is it a little rough around the edges.

Does the resurgence of 2D games excite the retro-gamer in all of you? Side-scrollers are a personal favourite of mine.

With titles like Muramasa, Boy and His Blob, New Super Mario Bros Wii and even Metroid looks to have 2d elements again..which two dimensional title at E3 excited you guys and gals the most?

Watch out Chad, Ahmadinejad is going to eat you.

Seeing New Super Mario Bros Wii get crazy awesome 4 player co-op made me wonder: are there any other classic games that would benefit from co-op? I feel like you could do some crazy stuff in a 2d Bionic Commando where you can swing off each other

Do you feel like with Mircosoft coming out with Natal & Sony coming out with their "secret" control that it may put a serious dent in Nintendo's profits to the point where Nintendo might have to step it up with the enginuity instead of releasing peripherals that bearly work on the games themselves?

-After E3's most hype inducing announcement ever, THE WII VITALITY SENSOR, I have 3 important questions:

1-At which exact point of History Nintendo collectively lost their minds?
2-Will be "Puzzle! Puzzle!! Puzzle!!!" compatible with the vitality sensor and how it will affect it's gameplay?
3-Describe a game that uses all Nintendo's Wii peripherals (you can include plastic guitars if you want to)

Does the cast have any new ideas for segments in the show? Maybe letting other people host? You might get different reactions from different hosts and give other persons more time to talk. Also PSN should finally have enough momentum to get a dedicated review slot, has this been brought up? What about iPhone App/DLC review segement?

1.) Seeing FFXIV on the show floor got me thinking. Do you prefer the cyberpunk/steampunk style of FF (FFVII, FFX, FFXIII); or the medevil style of FF (FFXII, FFI, FFIV)?

2.) Am I the only one who thinks Metroid the other M is the most idiotic name ever?

3.) Castlvania made by Hideo Kojima is a dream come true! If you could give one of your favirote franchises to a different development team for their next game, what game would it be and who would you give it to.

4.) Milo. Discuss.

--Things I know will get discussed, but I will put them up anyhow.
Sin and Punishment 2; Second coming of Jesus?
Lack of new IP's; Holding to your guns, or just lazy.
Link going righty for the sake of wiihood; Is this what Miamoto meant by changing it up? Oh broad sword! Te he te he....

--Might want to talk about.
Hoshi no Kirby; Only been in development now for like 5 years.

--Fun things you might like, for RETRO POWER!.
During E3, I bought my friend Bionic Commando NES. He had never heard of it, but now he adores it.

--REAL QUESTION
With the introduction of the Wii motion+, isn't using the mote as a NES controller totally inconvenient if you want it in the jacket?

It would seem this year's E3 was a lot more compelling than last year. Do you think anything was done differently this E3 to make it more interesting? Or was it just the content that was presented?

Also, although having as much time as you had there, I'm sure with the blogging of conferences some of you didn't get to hit every booth, game, discussion panel. What would be the one thing you regret not checking out at E3 for each of you?

Confirmed! Chad has a reflection and thus his awesomeness does not come from being a vampire, must... keep... narrowing down sources of awesome.

While there were a good number of games that have 2D graphics at E3, were there any titles that didn't look very retro but radiated old-school-sensibilities more through their gameplay? (I am curious if there were any 3D games whose approach was very "retro")
