RetroforceGO! records episode 91 tonight: Platformers photo

As we sat around in the jacuzzi on our yacht the other night, it occurred to us that we've come almost a full hundred episodes without doing a show on platformers. Upon realizing this, Chad nearly spit out his champagne -- which would have been fine, as that is exactly what the jacuzzi was filled with in the first place -- but at that moment we were all in agreement that this should be rectified immediately.

Thusly, this week's show will be about platformers. Why we love them, why we hate them, so on and so forth in the usual manner in which we do things around here. Please leave us your questions after the jump, and feel free to check back tomorrow for the new episode.

Is there any game you'd like to see reinvisioned as a platformer?
(i.e. the Legend of Princess version of Zelda)

I know some people don't consider 3D platformers to be true platformers. What's your opinion?

Also, like me, did you get tired of all the 3D platformers that sprung out of Mario 64 ass? I mean, they're were good ones. But some were truly terrible.

One more thing, do you remember Glover? It was a kind of puzzle platformer on the N64. How amazing was that?!

Looking back at platformer sequels, was there a particular sequel that added a gameplay mechanic that greatly improved the series in general?

Of course, one of you will mention the ability to fly in Super Mario Bros 3, since that mechanic has made it's way to almost every sequel since.

Are there any 3D platformers that you just would like to play in 2D? If there are, why would you think that they'd be better this way?

The Donkey Kong Country series has to be one of my favorite franchise of all time . It was so big back in the day I remember going to my neighbor's house to play this 'New SNES game' and there I was playing Donkey Kong Country; not only was the game awesome and had unbelievable graphics for the time but my friend at the time bought the game with his SNES (He was a Genesis fanboy :P )

I personnaly spent hundreds of hours in the mid-nineties playing Donkey Kong Diddy's Kong Quest , the music was so different , the atmosphere was creepy and level design we're awesome and I have to confess I've never beaten the Lost World to this day. DKC2 has one of the most beautiful soundtrack of any game ever.

I love it so dearly and it has a very special part in my heart.

I remember crying to my parents and begging them to buy me Donkey Kong Country 3 the very next year hahahahhah!

Bramble Blast FTW!

What do you think of "faith jumps"?
For example, in Super Mario Bros. 2 (the lost level one) there are some jumps that have to be made without seeing where you're going to land.

Also, platformers are the shit. The only games that make everything stop for one second while I watch whether or not I make that jump.

Also I hope there is some mention of John Carmack's Commander Keen and the Smooth Scrolling graphics engine

You all probably remember the animal buddies from the Donkey Kong Country games. You'd jump in a box and one would pop out with a specialized skill for a specific part of the level. (My favorite was always Rambi. TASTE RHINO HORN, KREMLINGS!)

Anyways, my question is: if you could have your own personal animal buddy in real life, what would it be, and what sort of skill would it use? (I think I already can guess what Chad's answer will be...)

What is the most useless power up you've ever experienced in a platformer? Was it sometimes useful, but given to you at a bad time (like Sonic's running shoes in some levels), or is it always a steaming turd?

Also, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES: Balls hard platformer, or exercise in masochism?

Are there any kind of quirky ways of platforming, game-mechanics-wise, you wish more games had done/would do?

I've been partial to grappling hooks, myself. I struggle to think of anything between the original Bionic Commando and its' rearmening that didn't severely limit what you could grab. If anyone remembers one, I'd love to hear stories of it.

I think the pogo-stick action in the NES DuckTales game is another thing that you get complete freedom to use in that game whereas most others would relegate your springiness to the realm of power-ups and special blocks.

This may be a little vague and weird but . . . if nothing else it brings to mind the mental image of having extending robot arms and pogo stick legs. I think I just described an Inspector Gadget game.

My question;

Which C64 game was the best platformer to you guys?

The reason I ask this is because when I saw the topic for RFGO!, I thought of the first game I ever completed. This was Count Duckula: No Sax Please, We're Egyptian, a C64 game that was based on a particular episode of the cartoon. You had to guide Count Duckula around a pyramid and avoid duck-mummies (I think) and countless other stuff.

2 questions:

1- What's the most satisfying way to kill a goomba? Jumping over it, burning it with a fire flower, running with star power, throwing it a turtle, hitting it with your tail, eating it with yoshi or just watch it falling into a hole? -Wow, this makes me think of all the options a so called "linear game" has.

2- Do you think that Super Mario Galaxy is the Best 3D Mario game ever because of it's lenarity? One of the reasons I don't like Mario 64 (but I understand it was made to teach us to move in 3D) was because it had exploration motives. You had a title, a screen and you had to figure out how to get a star in the same level all over again.

Galaxy changed that and even if every level was in the same world, it actually changed the layout everytime. You only had to advance to win. Pure retroish style.

What type of platformer player are you guys? The type who meticulously collects every item and goes extremely slowing as not to die, or the type who blasts through the level yelling fuck you to everything you pass. The later would generally grab the controller from the former because of how painfully hard it is to watch them play.

Whose idea was it to create a double-jump in video games? It makes no sense any way you look at it.
Physically, it's impossible to jump off of nothing in mid-air, and game-wise, why not just make the ledges lower?

How do y'all feel about platorming areas in non-platforming games? Any memorable instances in certain games? I don't mean generic stuff like jumping in action games or shooters, but actual platforming sections in otherwise completely different genres.

Like, certain areas of dungeons in Link's Awakening switched you from the traditional top-down view to a side-scrolling perspective and had you hopping on or slashing at goombas and avoiding piranha plants, lava pits and thwomps. It's obvious where they got the inspiration for those bits from, but they were still very fun and memorable, and worked to switch up the gameplay well.

What's the weirdest thing about platformers than people just accept? (Currency is as big as a person and must be picked up by running into, items float in midair, everyone can jump 9 feet in the air or the fact that everything is perfectly spaced out?)

Do your prefer a world map or just having them in order?

Can you recall one of the most difficult parts from a platformer one that just sticks out in your mind as a jump that took you forever to get?

Has anyone play Super mario 2 (jp) and does anyone agree that it is one if not the most hardest platformer?

What needs to be done to renew interest in platformers?

Hi, Retroforce Crew. Long time listener, first time commenter here.

Aren't ice levels the worst?

Also, have any of you guys played Psychosomnium? It's by the indie dev Cactus, and bucks a lot of the traditional conventions for 2d platformers. At one point in the game, you're actually expected to die, and when you do another character standing on the screen takes your place.

Also, also, if you Chad could just do an impression of the sound Yoshi makes when he hits a spike, that would just be phenomenal.

Thanks. You guys are awesome.

I always hated "the ice level" that seemed to be in every platformer. It never felt very heroic trying to tip toe to the edge of a cliff to make a tricky jump, only to slip off and die like a tipsy street walker at a banana peel convention.

Were there any platformer cliches that appeared in lots of games and really frustrated you?

Semi-related follow up!

Were there any platformer innovations that really improved the genre for you? For example wall jumping, double jumping, automatically grabbing edges?

Personally I enjoy sliding backward down slopes in SMB 3. It is not super useful. But it allows you to back that thing up, and in the process murder turtle skeletons.

Now I'm late to the video game thing being 35 and having only started playing 5 years ago, but is it me but are the older games just freaking harder than now? I need to have my girlfriend play Super Mario 3 (played for the first time ever, three months ago) as she is so much better at it than I'll ever be. Or is it just me and my old man reflexes? I also bring puzzle fighter into this as I can whip through HD remix on hard but the GBA version owns me on level one or two on normal. Also............ dolphins.

Do you guys think that platformers are sort of the essential or atleast the purest form of game? It's hard to say since a game can be so many things but I was wondering if there are any other genres you thought were as influential as the platformer? (Almost all games have platform elements, I'd say the next influential is RPG- especially recently.)

Another question; What would be your PERFECT platformer? You can put anything into the game, but it must still be a platformer!

One more; Currently the standard for in game rewards for playing correctly or well is the cut-scene (blah). Platformers to me, are some of the best examples of pure games because they (or atleast the old ones did) rewarded us with different gameplay such as powerups and boss fights for playing well.

I guess that turned into a statement...

WAIT! If you had to make the ultimate platformer cross-over who would be the main characters and who would be the main enemies?

I would like to talk about mid-air controls for jumping.

Did you ever find it a little awkward that when holding the jump button for maximum height you get a little hang time at the apex of the jump, but when you let go early for a short hop, the upward momentum meant for a full jump just comes to a sudden stop before your character starts falling?

Also what do you think of the Contra/Metal Slug/Run 'n Gun style of jumping that omits the ability to control the height of a jump to force players to think more heavily about their jumps?

Furthermore, what of Ghost and Goblin's complete lack of mid air control where you literally had to "Look (and memorize) Before You Leap"?

P.S.
If I jumped on your each of your heads, what would you all turn into?

How the hell did Nintendo get mario right on so many subtle levels? Acceleration after running a few steps, jumps based on the length of time the A button was held down, BUOYANCY IN FREAKING WATER! The Nintendo must have had a wicked programming team.

So here's a good topic. Platformer conventions, the good, the bad, that which have yet to be discovered!

examples:
good: low jump / high jump
bad: time limits
new: infinitely large levels!

being creative is hard.

P.S. ASCII MARIO FTW!

ahem.

This is more of a Mario question but it can apply to any platformer really since mario set a lot of platforming rules.

What do you all think lies in the mysterious void outside of the screen?
Do you think it is a Bermuda Triangle-like zone full of aimlessly floating Bullet Bills and ignored Goombas?
Or perhaps it is more like the backstage of a theater production? Where Koopa Troopers hurriedly change from their red shells into their Green shells with wings before they have to enter stage right (with Bowser banging Princess Peach in the green room).

What do you guys think? What kind of world lies just off of the screen?

Anyway, I'm curious what you guys think of Odin Sphere, Muramasa, and the latest Warioland game for Wii. Personally, seeing 2D platformers with gorgeous graphics makes my heart soar, but these games really don't seem to have a big audience. I realize everything has moved to 3D these days, but with many mainstream games now attempting to appeal to the "casual" gamer, do you think there could be a resurgence of simpler games (such 2D platformers) with high quality 2D graphics?
