RetroforceGO! records episode 88 tonight: Peripherals photo

It's been a while since we had ourselves a nice hardware episode, so this week we thought we'd talk about peripherals. Not controllers so much (we kinda already did that), but all the other ridiculous crap that plugged in, snapped on, or otherwise connected to our consoles and handhelds to make them look absurd and do things it probably didn't need to do.

If your Game Boy ever looked more like a Gundam than a portable gaming device, or your Genesis stood 3 feet tall with adapters and add-ons, you know what we mean. We're sure you can recall some pretty absurd stuff, and if you can't just look around you -- it's still happening today. Wiimote kitchen utensils, anyone? Hit the comments with your questions and personal experiences, and we'll catch you tomorrow.

Are there any peripherals that you felt had technology that could really go somewhere, but was held back and in turn a failure because of the way they were marketed/handled?

I found Legend of Zelda DX for gamboy color at $2.89 .
How about gameboy link cable?

The most ridiculous and unnecessary peripheral for me was always the Game Gear TV Tuner. The Game Gear raped packs of batteries as it was, did we really need ANOTHER thing to help it suck up power? Did anyone ever witness one of these in action?

Did any of you have that 20 pound cyborg contraption that clipped onto the original gameboy? It had lights, a magnifying glass, bigger speakers, a portable grill and drink holders to name a few things.

Hey guys, long time listener first time commenter. Anyhow, here's a question for you: Game Boy Pocket Sonar -- Great Game Boy accessory or GREATEST Game Boy accessory?

Keep up the great work!

What it the most pointless peripheral you have ever used?

Mine was a PS1 motion controller I won in a competition, I'll see if I can get a picture of it. Like the powerglove it just doesn't work. I have never seen or heard of anyone else with it. Have you heard of it?

I was one of the unfortunate, deprived children who suffered through life without ever experiencing the SNES Super Scope. Could you please paint me a picture and let me know if this peripheral was as amazing as it looked? What kinds of games could be played with it?

what do you think is worse? Peripherals that don't work the way you thought they would like the power glove and the u-force, or peripherals that don't really do anything like those stupid sport attachments that make your wii remote look like a baseball bat?

Seeing the Game Boy Printer in the post... Did anyone really used it that much so you had to buy additional paper? I for myself had to buy about three or four packs since I printed almost every photo I shot with the Camera, almost every Pokémon card from the Pokémon TCG video game and most of the japanese Pokédex entries from Pokémon Gold.

Also: NES Zapper vs. Wii Zapper.

The Activator was the stupidest peripheral ever developed for any system. You may have already talked about it on the previous hardware show.

It is stupid enough to talk about again.

Who has had the pleasure/agony to experience Steel Batallion? A friend of mine actually purchased it (NEW!) and I would have to say it was the most cumbersome/awkward gaming experience ever...but man was it AWESOME!

There was more than 1 occasion when I'd see people leaving a store with the massive Steel Battalion box, and thought "I could take him". Sure they probably could have clobbered me with the thing, but new it was $150 (IIRC) so I doubt they would have been swinging it around; it was definitely a risk I would have taken.

Why did they replace R.O.B. with the Power Pad? I tried plugging that thing into my old N.E.S. a couple years ago to play World Class Track Meet or Super Team Games or something and about gave myself a coronary. If you ever used one of these, how did you keep it from slipping all over the living room? Or did you just pause the game after running every 50 feet? Also... leaping off the pad so that your onscreen avatar flew about 3 miles in the long jump-- cheating, or hilarious?

When I was a little kid I didn't have many friends so I had to make my own fun. I would take two NES zappers and run around my backyard and pretend I was saving the world.

I also had these crazy giant button attachments and magnifying glass thing for my gameboy and thought it was the coolest thing ever.

* You guys agree that the Master System had the best use of peripherals with the Light Phaser and 3D glasses? The 3D glasses you can´t use much time, but in the 80s and early 90s, was impressive. I have fond memories playing Spacer Harrie 3D. And the Master System have great light gun games. Gangster Town was fun, Wanted have a good western style, Rambo 3 was hard, and Assault City had high-tech graphics for an 8-bit system.

Light Gun is the peripheral that I most miss, because even gun games in the Wii you are not point directly at the target.

I came here to post about the magnificent contraption that necrozen also mentioned. I received the Game Boy Super-Awesome-Light-n-Magnify (my name not theirs) as a birthday present, and I loved that thing so much that I would wait until night to play my Game Boy just so I could take advantage of the glorious lights. And those sprites! Those wonderful, greenish, weirdly magnified sprites! Fantastic!

1. Did you enjoy as much as I did, creating your own dungeon crawlers using the Gameboy Camera by taking pictures of the inside of your own house?

Ok, in case you're confused, there's a function that allows you to put buttons on pictures, and if you press them in the slideshow, you'll get sent to another picture. And I would put arrow stamps on top of those buttons to show wich direction you'll be heading. And if you headed the wrong direction you'd might encounter a monster (wich was my dad with a Scream mask) and loose. (PS: Anyone who disses Gameboy Camera shall taste my fist of thunder)

2. Have you ever felt reluctant of putting a newly released game on the top of your list of favourite games, because the game already there is a dear childhood memory of yours (or various other reasons), even when you know that the game you just recently played is a far more superior title in many aspects?

The Super Scope - Awesome or retarded?
I thought it was great when I was little (Come on...it's a bazooka...that you fire at the TV!!!), but now I look back on it and it was kind of a piece of crap that didn't really have any good games to go with it.

If you don't want to answer that one: Do you miss the days of really crazy peripherals? And do you think the Wii is bringing it back?

What is the controller you hate the most?

Have you ever messed with the fishing rod controllers?

How many absolutely retarded looking Gameboy peripherals can you name? I totally had the giant magnifier and worm light that my gramma had gotten me when I was a kid.

My prize peripheral, the special Ocarina Of Time edition Game Boy Camera.

Let's give it up for the GAME GENIE. Oh my God that was the most amazing thing when it came out. The possibilities blew my mind as a kid. I never owned one until much later but I had some fun borrowing it from friends. I also have a fond memory of renting the Super Nintendo version from Blockbuster and using it on Super Mario World, with codes to float around via the jump button and infinite star power.

Of course, this meant I couldn't beat Bowser, as I was invincible and couldn't hop on and stun the Mechakoopas without killing them. This was the first time I'd reached him as well, so I was incredibly confused as to how to beat him. Still, Game Genie is seriously the best thing ever.

The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive had some peripherals that didn't fly well, specifically, the already mentioned Activator, Menacer (which I proudly own), Power Base Converter (which I own too :D), 32X, etc etc. Looking it up on wikipedia, I saw there was a mouse? Also, the Sega Channel, did you have any experience with it? Discuss.

Just wanted to show off a bit of my saturn peripherals: Twinsticks, Mission Stick, 6player multitap for 10player bomberman, Netlink w/ SaturnFan Panzer Dragoon Zwei sticker, sega saturn mouse.
For the Pokemon color gameboy, attached is the DanceDanceRevolution pad and DDR game.

Now for the question. What retro peripheral would you like to be remade again to work with current generation games?

My two favorite peripherals: the NES Power Pad and the Game Boy Advance Link Cable. The Power Pad because it kept me active when I was young and the Game Boy Advance Link Cable because I could use it to play Zelda Four Swords and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for GameCube. I also quite like the Game Boy Player for GameCube, though the SNES version I didn't get to use much.

I have one of these. It takes a separate 9-volt battery and it does its relatively simple job quite well. Kind of a shame it doesn't fit on the Game Boy Color or Pocket as the speakers are much weaker on those models and they could really benefit from it. It plugs on but doesn't snap onto the thinner models like the old brick for which it was molded.

Super Game Boy is another one that blew my mind when it came out. Another one I never committed to getting until much later (and cheaper.) The Game Boy Player eclipses it in most ways, but it has a few unique features that make it worthwhile. Most Game Boy games that came out after it have a unique border available, as well as special color palettes that are available only on the Super Game Boy and aren't recognized by the Game Boy Color or GBA. It's also better than the Game Boy Player for use with the Game Boy Camera because of the vertical cartridge orientation.

But speaking of the Game Boy Player, I love how certain GBA games have rumble for the Gamecube controller when used in the GBP. Mario & Luigi is the first one I played that did that.

Ffffffffffuck me for missing the Earthbound episode last week! Oh well.

So, my question is: Did any of you ever have the displeasure of owning this pile of shit? (See below for picture of said pile of shit)

(The Aura Interactor for SNES and Genesis)

If so, did it ever work correctly for any of you?

The commercials of the time used to make it out to be a giant rumble pack. All it did in actuality was aplify certain loud beats in the music and sound effects to the point where it made the vest rumble. Pure genius, right?

But there is an upside to the Interactor: It wasn't the SEGA Activator.
