Being someone who has never been able to get into Earthbound, what can you say that will make me want to play it?

You've already turned me on to Lunar, Rhythm Tengoku, & Waku Waku 7, so do your stuff! :-)

Question for everyone: How did Earthbound impact you as a gamer? Did it change your expectations of the genre or how a game's story could be told, for example?

I've never even looked at any of these games, so please sell me on the Earthbound/Mother series in 10 words or less. What am I missing that the rest of the gaming world adores?

?: So do you guys think that Ness being in the super smash games helped create interest in the series? My friends only knew him through there and non of them ever had any clue who he was. That's when lost my copy of earthbound let a coworker borrow and it was never returned after he quit. wait till i find that man. But anyways show rocks you know that keep it up. Peace, Love, 8-bits

I've never played a Earthbound or Mother game but they've always interested me. Most JRPGs have a very similar fantasy setting that doesn't really interest me anymore but Earthbound seems completely different. Is the Earthbound series easy to play today? I've heard that it has a frustrating amount of grinding, but I'm assuming its worth fighting through due to the huge following its developed. If I was going to go back and play the series should I start with Mother 1 or start with Earthbound?

By the way your podcast is A-MA-ZING! 'Nuff said. Seacrest out.

Did any of the Retroforce crew buy Earthbound just because the box was so huge? Also, what do you guys think of the stuff that came with it?

:D Presumptively declaring this the best episode ever!

Question: One of the greatest traits of the Mother games is their masterful use of ambiguous storytelling. Instead of purely spelling out the plot, so much of what makes the game amazing is in the subtext and unstated plot points and thus has to be inferred, deduced and even debated, leading to a fascinating experience conducive to discussion and anylazation. Do any of you guys have any particular favorite instances of this (like the fetal symbology in the Giygas fight) and do you think more games should take that approach to storytelling?

Also:

How epic of a crossover would that be? (Just look at Boneydorf XD)

FAPPITY FAP! FAP FAP I’ve been waiting since I started listening for this episode!
Ok so here is my way too long list of questions! (Don’t hurt me)

When did you first play earthbound?

Did any of you look at solely because of the huge box?

Did any of you get the change to play through the game with the actual players guide that came with it? Did this better the experience in any way? Also if you had the guide how were the scratch n sniff cards?

Was I the only one to found out about ness and earthbound through Smash brothers?

When did you realize earthbound was not going to be like other RPGs?

Was earthbound the first modern setting rpg you ever played.

The protractor is one of the greatest items ever, confirm or deny?

How much did you hate pokey? (This is before you found out what he did to himself in mother 3)

Did you laugh out loud during any point?

Speaking of what’s your favorite joke?

Calling your dad to save your game is this the best way to implement saving?

Did any of you use any other name besides PSI rockin. I actually used gaming.

Tessie or bubble monkey? Who wins based on greatness?

Do you think one of the reasons the battle style is so minimalist is that it would look very weird that pre-teens are beating up animals and inanimate objects with frying pans and baseball bats?

If you had to pick out your favorite moment of weirdness what would it be?

Mr.Saturns did any of you not like them at first. Or did you all love them ?

What was the best part of the unique way of battling in earthbound, was it the rolling HP, the ability to auto-win against super weak enemies or something else?

Isn’t it the most satisfying thing ever with the rolling HP when you are able to heal someone JUST before their health hits zero.

It’s been stated that the ages of the heroes are 12-14 was this as hard for you to imagine as it was for me. I always thought they were like 8 or 9.

If anyone asks “I never played earthbound, why should I? Can you say in the most polite way possible “Because you need to, bitch!”?

How annoying was it micromanaging the storage system between the four heroes.

Should their be a helpful hint guy in every rpg?

Why is Mr.T in this game?

Ghosts are scared of rock and roll, how awesome is this?

Is earthbound the only game where you actually have to get healed at a hospital?

Did those mushroom enemies make you scared of them solely because of the mushroom status effect.

If you’ve played mother 3, rope snake vs escape mouse.

What is favorite music from the game?

NOA seems to be infamously bitter about this game not selling all that well despite them pouring their heart into it, do you think they have a reason to be bitter?

ONEtt, TWOson, THREEd, FOURside. When did you realize that?

What’s your favorite town?

Why is the Mr.saturn plush so expensive :(? Stella knows what I’m talking about.

When starting the game and naming people and you're favorite things, did you enter in your own things and do you remember what they were? I remember entering names and things that if my friends played they would think I was cool, I think for my favorite thing in the game I put boobs. Did you ever do this?

I thought it was so cool that it asked a few things about yourself praying that I would someday be this dude in the game if I made everything he did what I would do.

These questions have SPOILERS!!! in them and I would not normally do this but since dyson may be still playing it, I will separate them for his sake and any listener who read this and have yet to beat it. SPOILERS!!!!

If that zombie stared into your gaming soul, what would he find?

It was later stated that Jeff’s friend tony is gay, Did any of you pick up on this despite it never being hinted at in the game?

How long did take you to figure out you had to actually stand in front of the waterfall that long?

Having to keep hydrated in the desert was cool! Umm please turn this into a question.

Blue blue blue blue.

Did it feel weird to fight piles of puke?

Should every game have coffee breaks?

While not the freakiest thing in the game did Poo’s trail seem a bit mature for a Nintendo game? (I am going to remove your tongue)

Moonside or Magicant which is weirder?

In truth, it’s a bit played out to collect eight of something in an RPG but how does this game do it so well?

If your like me you hate when your RPG character are at all different levels, did the ridiculous power boost ness got in Magicant make you a little mad?

Were you sad when the chosen four gave up their bodies to fight Giygas. I was so sad because I thought they would not get them back and be stuck as cold machines.

Have you heard of the theory that when you go back to kill Giygas you are actually being sent back in time to abort Giygas in the womb, this is supposedly evidenced by an outline of an infant in the final battle and the room the final boss is in looking like part of the female anatomy.

In the final boss music, what’s better the 8-bit buildup or part after it?

Being completely serious, could Giygas potentially be the great Nintendo villain ever? He seems all powerful to the point that it is scary.

Did any of you get scared even a bit when pokey turned off the “Devil’s machine” and Giygas was unleashed?

Is praying one of the greatest ways to defeat a boss ever?

How long did it take you to figure out you needed to pray?

Did any of you take Paula home with you?

(Also, screw luck I survived that accident ON PURPOSE to post these questions and listen to this episode! Have the longest show ever!!)

I have not been able to play Earthbound yet, but I added it to my list of games to play, because of all of you guys.
But, Question, What small detail do you like in any Earthbound that makes you appreciate it more?
I don't know Earthbound yet but as such in Fallout (at least in the old ones) I like that their was some scientific knowledge in there. It wasn't part of the main quest, but I like it was their on the side to add detail or explanation or something in the game.

Is there a way of getting Mother 3 onto my DS lite through the use of only an R4 card? I have Earthbound on there and I want to be able to play this as well straight after!

The only reason I ask is because you're all awesome, and because every time i've tried playing Earthbound on a ROM, something has happened that killed my progress. Whether its changing my computer or discovering the ever loving powers of Destructiod resulting in me never being bothered to do anything but surf the net on my laptop, i've never managed to play much of the game at all :(

Oh hey I missed one :P When you played did any of you name the characters after people you knew. I felt this make the experience a lot more personal to me, I played this game at the start of this school year and since this is my senior year, it was very personal for me to kinda have this final adventure with my friends and I. This is probably very nerdy but hell if it didn't make those goodbyes and the end all the more tear-inducing.

EarthBound, above all else, is a game about smells. "This game stinks," proclaimed the advertising of the day. However, have you ever taken the time to truly consider what the many locales in EarthBound would smell like? The cool, salty smell of Summers. The dank, suffocating moisture of Deep Dark Swamp. The boozy, smokey atmosphere of the Topolla Theatre.

What place or thing in EarthBound would you be most eager to smell? Also, what in God's name would a Mr. Saturn smell like? A Tendite?

Earthbound/Mother Fans are serious business and obviously very passionate about the series due to its quirkiness and sweet story. So I have to ask, WTF is Nintendo's problem? Obviously the sales were not what they expected, but it seems like they are especially bitter when it comes to the Mother fans. Would it really kill them to appease us and bring the entire series over to the US, did they really lose that much money on Earthbound?

Also, I can haz special guest Dexter345?

I wish I would have had time to get it done before the show, but remind me and I'll finish it later. I totally was going to draw the RFGO! team as Earthbound characters. :P

Anywho, questions.

1. Did any of you have the players guide and just how badly did the stickers stink?

2. If Mr. Saturn, Ness, Paula, Jeff, Pokey, Poo and Bubble Monkey were to cross the road at the same time, who would get there first and why?

3. Just how amazing is Mr. Saturn's nose and hairs? :D

Love you guys!!! <3

I've been waiting to play these games for ages, and part of me hyst doesn't have the time anymore. If you were to be stranded in a skycastle(or on the back of a giant turtle) what 1 mother game would you like to bring with you? Alternatively, what one mother character would you like to be stranded with?

Also I'd PSI Rockin with Chad, Dyson, and Topher. And I'd PK Love with Colette and Stella. Notice the with and not against. ;p

Can't help myself: One more and one last picture:

Despite being thoroughly un-understandable, how do you roughly imagine Giygas and Porky's incompressible attack? Do you think it's some super-refined form of PSI that a human couldn't even begin to fathom, or perhaps a power stemming from such concentrated evil that the innocent and pure heros don't even know what it is? Or is it just Fishtank Tetris?

I'm so giddy for this episode :3 It's almost as exciting as if a new Mother game itself was released :D

Chad, you can rat me out as your dirty goods supplier. ;)

I highly recommend Earthbound Zero / Mother (1). It's such an amazing feat for an old Famicom game to have such an artsy and humorous mentality. Anyone who loves the Mother world deserves to give it a chance. I've found the common impression is that Mother is just a gear up for Mother 2 and that they're very similar. I think the first game stands on its own and can definitely be enjoyed by anyone with a little patience for grinding. And grinding in an Earthbound world with zany Earthbound characters is more fun than grinding anywhere else. You're truly missing out if you're a fan of Earthbound and you don't give this game a shot. There are a lot of cool surprises in store for you!

Greetings Earthlings and your collective handsome.
Seeing as Nintendo has never graced our European shores with Earthbound, it wasn't until a few weeks back that I acquired and played it through completely legal means.

Because of this, the experience is still pretty fresh in my mind. Which means I've many a questy-on to ask pour vous.

*Is Poo possibly the greatest named character in any video game of all time? HIS NAME IS FECES!

*What was your "favourite thing" when prompted in the opening scenes?
Ness was granted with the PSI attack "Ladies" throughout my campaign. :)

*What would you recommend I play next? Mother 1 or Mother 3?

*Did you beautiful people make the same mistake with Master Belch that I did? I'd spent so long in the surrounding area grinding, that I'd completely forgotten about the Jar of Honey. I took him on the first time and threw everything at him only for him to batfink my ass.
I spent several additional hours grinding some more only to get the same result. It almost bought a man in his mid twenties to tears. I kid you not.

And as a bonus question:
*What is you favorite Pokemon?

Thanks again for any autographs that are on their way and I look forward to hearing you all say sweet nothings into my ear cavity tomorrow eve. :)
