RetroforceGO! records episode 86 tonight: Commodore 64 photo

Finally, right? We know many of you have been waiting for a Commodore 64 episode, so tonight's your night. I could pretend I know what I'm talking about and go on about floppy discs and keyboards, but I never had one of these things, and it's not polite to lie one's face off. Good thing Conrad will be joining us tonight.

Hit the comments and leave us your questions, as well as any fond memories you might have of the little 8-bit computer that could. Lord knows I've only got a couple of my own. But Conrad and Colette know what's up, so we'll just let them do the talking this week. Get ready to hear said talking tomorrow, and we'll catch you then!

I've got nothing to contribute since I've never owned or played one... But hey, that Commodore64 logo sure looks like a baby metroid.

Would you recommend any C64 games to someone who has never played a C64? I was born into the NES era so I never played any C64 games.

This episode turns my floppy disk into a hard drive.

It doesn't actually but I wanted to make that double entendre.

I love you guys.

ah the commodore. My first encounter with sex themed games. Quite strange to play a strip poker game when you're 10. That was the moment my "my father is a parent, not a man" delusion was shattered. P.S Parental Control did not exist, it wasn't their fault.

ok - so now to my question...

For those of you who had the amazing experience and are of the right age range - did any of you frequent any BBSs and play some of the text based BBS games? From what I understand, there is still a couple BBSs in existence that are running on C-64 and 128s.

Also - Summer Games...Platform Diving...hold left, push button, push up at last second...perfect somersaulting dive with 4.0 difficulty...smirk to friends who totally fail.

So, I frequent this flea market down the road, and one of the vendors has hell-of retro games. Recently he got he hands on a box full of Commodore games and I think a system as well. Do Conrad and Colette think I should go for it, and what games should I look for in the box?

Thanks,

2 Questions:

Let us say that Topher and Stella are walking down the stree, they run into Vin Diesel, he starts to flirt with Stella, and so Topher, being the gentleman that he is, takes off his shirt and challenges him to some type of competition. What would it be? And who would win?

Here is a serious one: The C64 has become very popular over the years with gamers, why do you think they have never released another one, or a collection of games on other systems?

Long time listener, first time poster!

Have the games for the C64 aged well or would they be hard for someone to go back today and play them who doesn't have any experience with them?
Would you recommend to someone who has never played the system to purchase a used one today or is it more of a nostalgic system that only appeals to those who played it back when it was released?

Thanks so much! You guys are AMAZING!!

Though I don't remember exactly my Commodore 64 past, I do remember that I played the hell out of "Bubble Bobble" with my mother and my brother. And while I can't think of the exact name, there was one mini golf game that I used to play with my brother as well. That were surely some good times...

Unfortunately, my father sold the system along with all the games about seven years ago. Wish I would have stopped him...

Question: Mail Order Monsters? Played it..yes, no? Also, on a side note when I was a kid I used to play Airborne Ranger and Gunship on my C64. To make that a sad story, my cat who lived to the age of 20 used to sit next to my joystick and we would attack the Warsaw pact as pilot and warkitty. To finish it off with embarrassment I also used to sing my own lyrics to the airborne ranger opening music...as the load times were so long...which consisted off just the words Airborne ranger over and over again.

I have a certain sense of fear that the age range of listeners (and a couple hosts) may hamper this episode a bit as it did the Atari 2600 episode.

Since I have incredible love for my C-64, I'll just keep throwing out posts as my mind allows.

other great games I enjoyed :
-Phantasie
-BCs Quest for Tires
-all of the 'Olympic Games' series from Epyx
-Ultima III Exodus
-Impossible Mission (f'ing hard as hell - never finished it)
-Raid Over Moscow (took me a month to figure out I needed to use the function keys to move my ship up and down and allow me to exit the hangar)
-Beach Head
-Spy Hunter
-Commando
-The Way of the Exploding Fist (I used to LOVE cranking the volume, starting the disk load, and leaving the room to watch the reaction of any unsuspecting victims when the title screen appeared)
-Boulderdash
-Bruce Lee
-JUMPMAN and JUMPMAN Jr.!!!!
-Pitstop I and II
-Rambo
-too many text adventures to name

more later if I think of them...

Perhaps you can help me. I've been trying to remember the name of a certain Commodore game for a long, long time, but because it's been well over a decade since I last even saw a machine with my own two eyes, I can only remember the sketchiest of details.

It was a scrolling platform style game and Dali-esque backdrops decorated each screen. You played some little man (who may or may not have been wearing a hat) who had to collect pages from a book, possibly a musical book, possibly not. That, my friends, is the most vague and worthless description you'll ever hear, but it's as good as I can give you. If you can think of anything remotely like it, I'll be thrilled.

Also, who played Head Over Heels?

Also also, you MUST talk of Wizball.

What was your favorite form of game copy protection? Mine was using red-lens glasses to see the obscured copy protection codes in the manual.

Some C64 favorites: Bruce Lee, Mail Order Monsters, Barbie, Hot Wheels, and one of my favs, GI Joe! Epyx was the best dev at the time!

I only played mostly arcade ports on my uncle's C64. Centipede, Burger Time, Gauntlet, etc. were the few memories I had. I think I remember 1942 as well but I'll leave that up to Topher to confirm. I think what I remember most was on the back of those small gaming/computer magazines where they would advertise Q-Bert or Star Wars game, and you had all the monitors with different 'systems' listed underneath like Atari, NES, C64. What would be the one game you think you played the most from the C64 era?

Did any of you use the "Arcade Game Construction Kit" from Broderbund? I remember sinking months into that thing as a kid. You could make really fun arcade games in it.

Do you remember Neuromancer on the C64 (with theme song by Devo in Double Dribble speak)? It was part adventure, part RPG, part organ-trafficking sim, and part incoherent 3D maze thing. It was pretty awesome.

Mean Streets (the first Tex Murphy game) and Battletech on the C64 were pretty awesome as well.

Did you play with an Atarti 2600 joystick or a Sega Master System pad? Both worked. I remember chewing the rubber off of my Atari joystick though. Then it was sharp. Bummer.

I used to love playing the old Batman game on my dad's C64: its probably my second childhood game after Super Mario Bros.

Wasn't it great to be in a time with licenced games that didn't suck! Or probably for me, to be too young to judge them harshly...

Was that Batman game any good? I should fetch it out and give it a go again..

I played the shit out of various text adventures, but was too young to really remember the names of any of them. I recall one about being in trapped in Dracula's castle. And another with pirates. They were a ton of fun, though.

What was your favorite text adventure on C64?

Oh, fuck yes!

I had a Vic 20 before that, but the C64 began my love for games. I got it with GORF (what the hell did that stand for anyway? Was it just Frog backwards?) which seemed to be a Space Invaders rip-off until you got to the second level.

I mostly played the hell outta Archon and Street Surfer (skateboard down the highway stealing cokes from peoples' cars and watch out for chickens).

Playing with BASIC programs and making my first pixel art, I always missed its versatility in later mainstream consoles. The sound chip was pretty badass and the whole system overall was impressive for being made of essentially off-the-shelf junk.

I never owned one as a gaming machine sadly, so I can't really add anything to the questions.

I did own one, but it was much after the fact and I bought it from a garage sale. I don't think I had any games for it.

If you played Mail Order Monsters, did you have a favorite monster to fight with?

Concerning Phantasie (any of them, though 2 was the best), Questron 1 & 2, and Legacy Of The Ancients...did you beat any of these, and if you have played Legacy Of The Ancients, how badass did you think the inclusion was of those codecharts that were sort of like copy protection and allowed you to use the portals?

Did you own any of the Infocom games and love the included products as much as I did? I still have my Lucky Palm Tree Swizzle Stick from Hollywood Hijinx.

Can you think of a game more badass than Demon Stalkers? That's a trick question, there isn't one.

Also, did you play any memorable Loadstar games? There was some one I remember that had worms in it and had a SID for Axel Foley's Theme from Beverly Hills Cop as the background music. Other than that, I can't remember too many Loadstar games. But it was neat having a monthly set of games and programs sent by magazine. :)

Got one more for now - nice 'feel good for mankind' type story. My wife and I own a coffee shop. Someone happened to notice on my MySpace page that I was heavily into retro gaming and specifically C-64s. Long story short, the guy called our shop and asked if I was working. After my wife told him I was, a bit later he shows up with a huge BOX full of parts (3 drives, joysticks, etc), a RGB monitor, and a C-128! (I had never had one, only dreamed of it in my youth) All in almost new condition to boot. I asked him how much he wanted, and he said "I just want it to go to a good home where it will be loved". I couldn't believe it. Ever since I have been digging into old favorites and some new finds. I was also able to work out the mechanics of connecting the c-128 to my PC so I could load games from it without dealing with old screwed up floppy disks. Man I love my Commodores.

@Jim Sterling - check www.lemon64.com forums with your description. You will prolly have an answer in less than a day.

@tornotlukin - no question mark needed, no prompts :-)

@Haxan - Pirate's Cove and maybe Voodoo Castle?

My Vic-20 story...my dad bought us one for X-mas. I had no clue what to do with it when I first got it. I turned it on and typed 'GAME' and hit enter. And thus began my delving into the instruction book and basic programming when it responded to me with 'What the f_ck are you asking me to do you idiot?'

Oh yeah, and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein kicked ass as well.

Question time!

Do you guys prefer the C64 version of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders (a really underrated game imo) or the Amiga version? The Amiga one has better graphics and sound while the C64 has that retro charm.

Another spin on the question is what version of games that where originally on the C64 and then got ported to the Amiga do you like the best?

And just for the book, here's the Amiga and C64 version of Zak.

Just wanted to hop on and say thanks again to Colette for being on our podcast Sunday. IT WAS FRAKKING AWESOME. I'd like to leave some sort of question regarding the C64, but I've never laid eyes or hands on one. So, I'll just ask this: what are the NECESSARY games to play on the system? Basically, make a synopsis of "Commodore 64 for Dummies". Thanks.

I too owned a Vic 20 and remember Uncle Paul was the one with the commodore 64 and I remember I thought it kicked ass. The person that mentioned raid over moscow and getting your damn plane out of the hangar, yeah that was annoying as all hell but rewarding when you were finally out of it.

I remember either the Buck Rogers show kicking ass and being disappointed by the game or vice versa.

For me it was all about Mission Impossible though and quite thankful for the DS port since I think I only got 3/4 through with the game during my visits.

I guess my question is a multi tier one. First pick your favorite C-64 game for those of you that played em. Now put it against the front runner 2 other computer system games you played like the apple or Vic 20. What would those games be and out of the three who would win. Example.... Commodore 64 would be Mission Impossible...Apple since I can't remember that well would be Fish vs Otter game and Vic 20 would be Mouse Attack. I think Mouse Attack wins....sorry C-64 You ARE the weakest link...g'bye.

What was the first Commodore 64 game they 'copied' from a friend?

And what did you do during the lengthy loading times? With some games, you could have taken an extended afternoon nap and still woken up before the game had loaded...or crashed.

This is awesome! I totally have to have my brother pull out the C64 from the storage room and hook it up! I don't even remember any of the games for it since it's been years since we played it but oh, the fond memories.

I didn't have the system when it first came out, however, because my Dad was the cheap guy that he was, mostly we got game systems later on (like when we were 5 or 6) by going to garage sales and getting them for dirt cheap.

For those of you trying to remember titles of games that you once played when you were younger, I found a site www.c64.com that has a whole shit load of c64 games and you can download them for free to your computer and play them! You don't need a c64 to go down memory lane!

Also, I just love looking at the titles of the games. They were awesome.

Like Killed Until Dead.

Ghostbusters was an awesome game and Paperboy, Spy vs. Spy, Sex Games (oh yes...sex games), The Way of the Exploding Fist, etc.

So hopefully that site helps you guys out a little. I'm scrolling through it now to download some fond memories.
