RetroforceGO! records episode 85 tonight: Listener questions photo

It's that time again. The day has come when you, the listener, decide what this week's show is about. Not because we relinquish control, but because we agree to spend the entire episode discussing nothing but your questions. It's something we subject ourselves to every ten episodes, and to be quite honest ...

These are totally our favorite episodes to do. Seriously, we love it. We hope you enjoy it a little too, and would appreciate if you hit the jump and fill the comments with stuf for us to talk about. Anything goes, folks. We'll sift through and pick up all the shiny gems that catch our eye, and put them together to make a royal crown of a show for you ... and now that I've said Royal Crown it makes me think about booze. We'll probably bring some of that into it as well.

Oh, and Colette's idea last week (I think it was her) of doing reviews with songs from musicals got me wondering, what's everyone's favorite?

Have you heard of the game "Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled" for the Nintendo DS at all? It is supposedly coming out within a few weeks and I have not heard much about it yet. It has sprite based graphics and a game play style that looks very similar to Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Also the basic premise of the story seems pretty unique too. I was wondering if any of you were keep tabs on it and if you know anything interesting about it yet. I hope Destructoid ends up reviewing this game since it has a lot of potential. Thanks!

Being the professionals you are, what advice do you have for first time gaming convention attendees such as myself? I'm traveling as a writer for a gaming blog to SGC and PAX, and am not sure what to expect.

A couple of questions:

1) Did anyone of you order the Mother 3 handbook? I did, it's awesome 5/5 dolphins that are drinkin huge slurpees while riding chocobos!

2) Have you seen "Kings of power 4 billion? It's a gorgeus 12 minute sprite film resebling Metal slug in style and it's a combination of the previous, AKIRA, the Dragonball Z universe and the Junior Senior Move Your Feet music video (not my words). You can download it from http://probertson.livejournal.com/23973.html

I've asked this question before, but hopefully this time you guys will actually answer it. If you could make a heavy metal concept album, what would it be about? Go into detail. Would it have clean or growled vocals? Would it have a lot of guitar and keyboard solos? How many hot, scantily clad chicks would it have on the cover? Add more details as you lease.

I've said before, so I'll say it again. I love you guys so much. You bring a lot of joy to my earholes every Friday. Have a good show!

NES Box Art, what are your favorites, most hated or which was the most misleading. We all know about Megaman's famous box art style, but is there anything else that was really memorable for being badass or just hilarious.

I remember this game called Demon Sword, the box art has a Conan the barbarian guy on the front with a flaming sword standing by a giant medevil castle, but the actual game you played a ninja running through forests fighting other ninjas and samurais, and you could pretty much fly. Game was pretty awesome though.

Some remakes get you guys excited (boy and his blob), while others you say you never want to see happen (colette with the original zelda). Is this because you think some games were good but the update will fix the flaws? Or because you are just so attached to certain games that you're scared a remake would take away some of the magic of it?
(you can pull silent hill wii into this topic too)

When people are extremely hyped about a game they usually will look at footage or pictures over and over. What are some of things you can remember doing when you were extremely hyped about the game.

Since we just had aprils fools day did you ever fall for any video game related pranks. I fell for the sonic in melee prank by EGM a few years back.

Topher, whats it like to be clean shaven after all this time?

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self to play a game right when it came out instead of have to discover it years later. What would it be?

Dyson, If totinos had did a cross promotion with metroid prime when it came out and put metoid prime stuff all over the package would you have still bought them?

Chad, How far are you in mother 3 and do you think it's better than earthbound?

Collette, What would have to happen for you like silent hill:shattered dreams? Is it even possible?

Stella, just how awful is the haruhi dancing game?

but I digress,

If you could have a re-imagined franchise, i.e. a darker, dystopian mega man for example, what franchise would you redo, and what would you change about it?

P.S.

I just picked up an old dreamcast and a gamecube, can you all make any recommendations on games, I am not picky, anything that is fun.

As hardware evolves, the demand for more realistic gaming continues to grow. Ironically gaming has been considered as a medium for fantasy to escape reality and yet demand for realism continues. What do you think drives this need to mix fantasy with reality? The ability to shape a world in our image that is so close to home gives a thrill of personal power that most people in the real world can only dream of would be my guess.

I guess a follow up question to my original would be what blatant looking fantasy game(i.e. Mario Bros., Katamari, Castle Crashers, etc.) would you like to get slapped by the reality ugly stick? The thought of realistic looking mushrooms with eyes and feet don't seem worthy of 5 dolphins.

also, there is a two part cblog that Rhadley has posted recently called "Video Game Weapons the world isn't ready for." He has some great items on the list, and the explanations and accompanying pictures are great. What video game weapons would be on your lists that you think shouldn't ever exist in the real world?

Also, idea for episode 100. Have some contest in the mean time for listeners to participate in and the winner gets to be a guest for the episode. eh?

It seems this year there was a lot of April Fools jokes about releasing 8-bit games, what's up with that?
As for Silent Hill on the Wii, the lack of combat seems... interesting. I've always felt that the focus of the Silent Hill series (until recently that is) was survival and avoiding enemies rather than combat. However, I fear that by removing combat all together, it lacks part of the psychological impact that made the series work. Another issue, are they trying to modernize it?
I thought in the article I read that Wii remote would be your cell phone. Cell phone... not your radio. I do not feel comfortable with that, and I can't really explain why. Oh well, here is hoping its not shovel ware.

And now, questions!

If you could tell any person in the gaming industry to eat a bag of dicks, who would it be and why?

What other PSone era games would you like to see revisited?

Why do so many games have endings that feel rushed and incomplete recently?

And finally...

If you could live in any game world, which would it be and why?

I'd like to have a discussion about "sandbox game" of any genres. It seems sandbox games have become very popular this decade. Is it good for video games? Does it overwhelm a player by throwing him into a giant theme park and telling him to go bananas? Does it make the players have a sense of purpose or motivate the player to work toward something? Does it dilute or enhance the story of the overall game? Does it threaten traditional linear story of gameplay? Will sandbox game replace tradition linear games or does traditional linear games have a special place in video games? Games like GTA, Eve Online, Oblivion, Sim games and other choose your path or do whatever you want are examples of sandbox games.

Being a member of the newly-created Destructoid Artisans, I wanted to ask you lovely folks if you happen to have any artistic talents you've yet to showcase on Dtoid. Whether it being sculpture, painting, or bitchin' doodles, are any of you guys artistically inclined?

Also, this might seem random, but: what is your favorite character sprite design ever? I'm not talking about what character you liked, but what character image from NES/SNES/Genesis sprites did you love the most? For instance, my all-time favorite is the prisoner from Metal Slug. All of the art in that game is amazing, but the hobo-like prisoners always make me giggle a bit.

Dear RetroforceGO!,

Why are all of you guys so awesome? I only relatively recently got into the Destructoid podcasts and managed to listen to all of the RetroforceGO! archives in less than a week. I think the Sloshball/King Friday and Anthony's story about calling that woman a cunt in the movie store are my two favourite non-game related stories of the podcast.

I'm also wondering what you guys think of Punch-Out!! for the Wii. I don't have the original Punch-Outs on my not R4 and they're pretty brilliant but I don't know about paying almost $70 (Canadian) for a graphical upgrade.

Randomly, what's you guys' favourite drinks? I fancy most German beers (though blackbeer is only good in light doses) and tequila is good for those crazy nights. Are you guys into beer? Liquor? Coolers?
