RetroforceGO! records episode 83 tonight: Metal Slug photo

We touched on it briefly during the course of our Neo Geo episode, but come on. It's Metal Slug. You can't touch on it briefly. So we're doing a whole episode about it. Partly because it's one of my favorite games ever, but mostly because it deserves it. While it isn't exactly "old" per se, the series represents one of the greatest eras in videogame history; when you might say sprite-based artwork had matured into the best it was ever going to be.

Polygons marched on the horizon, ready to change the face of videogames forever, and there was no better way to draw the sprite ages to a close than with a series that combined outrageous humor and charm with addictive and action-heavy gameplay. Sit back in your rocket lounger, leave us a few questions in the comments, and get ready to join us tomorrow for our Metal Slug episode.

Do you think that Metal Slug will ever make a transition to 3D or will they stick to the 2d formula?

Also what is your favorite thing that the Metal Slug announcer says and What are your thoughts on Metal Slug 7? Is this iteration the series still fun after all these years?

Metal Slug! I love this series so much that I even bought the crappy MS Anthology for the PSP.

Anywaym, question time!

Do you feel that with every new MS game just feel the same? That it's just the same game with new stages?

Do you think Metal Slug would be better off if it added some different ideas as it went on, like different stats for the characters instead of them just being skin swaps? Where do you guys see the series going from here on out, is it better off just staying on the DS?

PS. Dyson are you still sweating meat from the Brazilian Steakhouse?

I love all you guys, it was great meeting Chad (I got showgirls now!) and Dyson for the first time. Colette I loves you even more than the two of them:)

I like Metal Slug.

What did you think about some of the Metal Slug games having life bars? I personally did not like that change.
Also: Would you want to see a new Metal Slug with all hand drawn art like King of Fighters XII or do you prefer the old sprite based stuff?

And BTW: A Cho Aniki PSOne game was released on Japanese PSN last week.

A simple question from somebody who has only played a little bit of Metal Slug in his life: Which iteration of the series is your favorite?

How long did it take before you were able to clear the first stage without either dying or continuing?

Also, How awesome would it have been if you could throw your partner ala Gunstar Heroes and Chip 'n Dale?

Metal Slug, hell yeah! I have the PS2 anthology with 1-6+X. While it may not be the most accurate port it's still fun.

Never understood the obsession with Metal Slug games.

Always thought it was fairly mediocre shooter series when compared to the game it essentially copies, Gunstar Heroes.

Metal Slug only used 3 of the 4 buttons on the neogeo arcade machine. If you could, what action would you map to 4th button?

@Jamn: You meant Contra, I take it.

Metal Slug X is the one I have the most experience with. I'd heard of but not seen the game until that installment ended up in my college lounge in '02 or '03. I played a few times, and then someone brought it in on MAME on their laptop and we were able to finish it for a change. The Anthology is the first game I bought with my Wii.

I love the second boss in MSX. You have to be extra careful timing your presses of the jump and fire buttons as you frantically platform up the pillar while the boss pursues you, lest you accidentally eject from that robo-suit-slug.

Gotta love how light-hearted the game is, too, especially with all the slaughtering going on.

I remember that the night before Brawl launched early in 2008, a friend and I played all of Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii waiting until we had to leave to go wait in line. I don't think I've ever been as much of a man since then.

Also, I'm going into NYC to record on a MTV game show tomorrow! Wish me luck!

In a series filled with over-the-top moments, what is your favorite scene from these games? I was always partial to the section of Metal Slug 3 where you kill YETIS with LASER-SHOOTING WAR ELEPHANTS!

Zombie puking: discuss.

ROCKET LOUNGE CHAIR!!!

Generic Question:
Which character do you like playing as the most? I always pick Fio, 'cause I like seeing a little girl take on an entire army with a pistol, a knife, and what ever else she can find on the battle field. She's also kind of cute.

This is either gonna be a really short episode, or a really long episode. There will be no in-between.

Topher: I miss playing this game on XBLA with you. We need more giggle fests after getting the Rocket LAAWNCHAA power-up.

Question time!

Which game do you all think is the pinnacle of the series? I'm thinking the third time was a charm with the character selection, branching paths, and little hidden gems it introduced. Your thoughts?

On a semi-related note, now that you all have the Hori pads (sorry Stella!), have you tried out the SF4 Madcatz pad with XBLA games yet as a basis for comparison? I haven't really had the time to mess with it yet, but any opinions or input would be appreciated. Do you think Microsoft will ever license out its wireless tech so we can get a pad/stick that isn't tethered to a USB port?

Also, I have a strange feeling that happens me with this game: I really really love this franchise, and have lots of fun playing it, but I really can't remember which one is MS1,2,3,X... you know what I mena.

Is not like Megaman, which even though Megaman 1 to 6 are graphically similar, I can se one screen of a game and say "This is Megaman 3" (and even remember the stage).

But I really can't say, based on a screenshot, or even seeing it on videos which one is which.

Do you think is a good thing or a bad thing that you can rememebr a series for being so much fun, but you can's say which one is your favorite, since you can't remember games individually?

And is it wrong that now I can only see the POWs as Luke Barnard's version of Aaron Linde?

Two questions:

1. Metal Slug 7 had no multiplayer. What was up with that?

2. Have any of you tried Commando: Steel Disaster for the DS? It is totally like a jacked up Metal Slug, far more punishing and with the most grating soundtrack ever conceived. Also, it was the first console game made by Mana, a cell phone developer.

@ a new challenger:

it's also on the ds so i'm okay with that. i dont like the thought of downloading it being my only option for playing it. same goes for all the stuff i've got on my wii and 360 downloaded. i dont like that that the ONLY option that i've got but because it is i suck it up and deal. i'm just saying i would still prefer to have a hard copy available is all.

Did any one of you, or anyone you know, ever get all the P.O.W.s in any Metal Slug game? I never have. In some of the games I have all of them for certain levels, but not a single 100% P.O.W. rescue-level in any game.

Do you guy's even think it's possible? Some of them bosses are just insane after all.

Lastly, I forget if it's in 4 or 5, but there is this one section when you're in a tunnel/subway and you drive this weird mech. It has four flexible legs, two on the ceiling and two on the floor. You have a stndard blue vulcan and this crazy powerful harpoon thingy... I remember whenever I would play that section, I always felt it was way too long, but still awesome. Ok well that's not a question actually, just wanted to say that.

Have any of you used the Street Fighter 4 controller to play MS3 on XBLA? I don't own SF4, but I got the controller for the awesome D-Pad and I must say it's worth it. I wish we could get all of the Metal Slug series on XBLA. It would be an awesome investment!

No...I think Gunstar Heroes fits better. The size of the characters, the size of the levels, the outlanish weapons, cartoon styling.

1. Rocket Launcher, say this Topher?
2. Chad did you find a Neo-Geo console, i know its expensive console, but special item to own?:) its ok if you don't got one because you can get the games on wii, ps2, etc.
3. Did you guys know there was a Neo-Geo arcade Memory card slot below to insert?

Metal 1,x, 3 are my favorites. I still haven't tried part 6. I don't know if part 7 is worth it or not? Waku Waku 7. I can easily find a Neo-Geo Cabinet in my city. Probably the first few Neo-Geo games was was Samurai Showdown, Metal Slug, World heroes, King of the Monsters, and Fatal Fury.
