RetroforceGO! records episode 80 tonight: Motherf*cking Street Fighter photo

Hey kids! Did you get Street Fighter IV yet? Did ya, huh? Isn't it magnificent? Isn't it the greatest thing to happen to mankind in eight years? The answer is yes, and we will hear no arguments on the matter. Street Fighter is awesome.

In fact, it's been awesome for about 20 years now. It's the series that spawned "I got next," the series that made our SNES D-pads feel like cheese graters after countless Hadokens and Spinning Bird Kicks. Most importantly, it's the franchise that gave way to an entire genre of videogames that we, and many of you, have come to adore.

We've waited a long time for this episode, and Dtoid community member and epic NARP host Hitogoroshi will be joining us to help celebrate. Leave us some questions in the comments if you like, and get ready for some serious talk about the history of Street Fighter.

Tonight, it's on.

What is it that separates SF from other fighters like Virtua Fighter and Tekken? Since it's begining on the SNES (SF2, not the crap that was SF1), there has seemed to be a greater love for SF than any other fighter. Is this due to the game being so great at the beginig, and being ingrained in the minds of most gamers as the prime example of a great fighter for all these years, or is it something else?

If you were making sweet sweet love with you your partner, and you could have any Street Fighter character walk in and join in the fun, what character would that be?

What is your favourite spinnoff (i.e. Capcom vs. _________) that includes characters from the Street Fighter universe?

If your favorite Street Fighter character was a musical instrument, what would it be?

Could you play it?

What would be the first song you'd play on it?

Also, what is the cheapest SF move? It's easy to go with Blanka's "body charge", or whatever the hell you call it when he covers himself in electric energy, but I think of the hadouken, simply because it's THE most well-known move in fighting games (who doesn't know how to pull it off?), and thus most "n00bs" tend to spam the hell out of it. Or, is there another move that pisses you off to no end?

What's your preference of the latest two Street Fighter releases: SF2HD or SFIV? Does the 3D look of SFIV make the game lose the SF feel?

I remember being 6 years old, watching older kids play SFII at the local arena. I usually missed watching the actual hockey game that my family had paid to see, but I didn't care.

Question: Has anyone seen/played an original Street Fighter (i.e., Street Fighter 1) arcade machine? Or is the only way to play it NOT emulation?

What is your favorite version of SF2 and SF3? Also, aside from those specialized tournament-style sticks, what was the best console-specific controller matched with a SF game?

What are your feelings on the "revenge super"? Personally, I think it is kind of cheap, and definitely overpowered. Why should you be rewarded for getting your ass kicked with a move that can take off 3/4 of your opponents power?

I love IV, but HD still feels better. Maybe it'll just take some time...

Do you think the Japanese hate Ken? I mean, he seems like such a tack-on to Ryu. Is he just a there just as a palate-swap thrown is to placate we Americans? Does anyone ever pick him over Ryu?

Here comes A New Challenger!

How many versions of Street Fighter II do you own? I have like 8 or something. Three of those are via Capcom Classics Collection, but still. For $32 you can get 4 different versions on the Virtual Console, two of which are pretty much redundant. That single game has been milked more than Pokémon.

I have fond memories of my uncle owning Street Fighter II on the SNES long before I ever bothered to get a copy, and playing the hell out of it on trips to my grandpa's house. I usually used Chun Li because I had no idea how to do any of the moves, so her basic jumping and kicking really worked for me.

My sister and I had no idea what the hell Ryu and Ken were saying. We decided it was "rat mucus."

Hey, Alpha 2 came out on the SNES so it's fair game as well!

Is Street Fighter the best way to introduce someone to the fighting genre, or do you think that the simple mechanism of Capcom games can affect the way that some players learn other fighting mechanics, for example, KOF or Tekken?

Is it better going from simple to complex or complex to simple?

The Street Fighter Alpha series introduced lots of characters from Final Fight. If there were any other Capcom characters you could add to the Street Fighter series, who would they be?

Open message to Capcom:

Bring back Karin! She's the only character I'm good at and she's much better than smelly Sakura and Gen.

Do you guys prefer arcade stick or control pad?

Also, what do you think of the Street Fighter story or canon so far, tying in with Final Fight and everything? With all the ret-con that they've done...

What characters would you have wanted in SF4 from any of the SF games (including 1 and Alpha series)?

Do you like the changes implemented into SF4 from SF2 and SF3?

And who are your favorite off-beat characters or characters in general?

What did you think of 3rd Strike since the community is split on SF2 and SF3:Third Strike?

Settle an argument my friends and I have been having for a while:

What is the point of having moves that are mapped to complicated movements?

Why bother with charges, and QCB, and 360º+PPP, and all of that? At high levels of play, everyone knows how to do the moves-- it's just about using them right, and that's when the game gets awesome. Why not make the moves simpler, so everyone can participate in that level? Is it elitism? When I was 10, being able to do a fireball when nobody else could was cool, but now it just seems old-fashioned-- in the bad way.

NOT THE HEADBITE!

I was always a bit disturbed that Zangief had a headbite move. It made perfect sense for Blanka, but with Zangief it seemed really brutal.

Do you miss not being able to play as the boss characters? They had such an aura of mystery to them in the first release of SFII because they were unplayable. It's cool to play as them, but I also miss that feeling. It's hard to be afraid of Sagat or Vega now that you can play as them.

I always found the original voices in SFII interesting and almost laughable. I remember some of my friends and I were sitting around trying to decipher what they were saying. For instance why did the then high pitched voice Sagat seem to have an attack related to Fiber?! I laughed hard when one friend thought the tornado kick they were shouting, "Psycho Cats Are Ferocious!"

Shoryoken sounded like, "All you can!" back in the day. Through all the Street Fighter iterations, which move was your favorite? Doesn't have to be from a favorite character.

YES! YES YES! I LOVE STREET FIGHTER AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

My first question: Where you guys performing any.. rituals to prepare for Street Fighter 4 to come out?

Personally, I had been playing unhealthy hours of Street Fighter HD remix and Third Strike and frequenting my local arcade that actually has 2 big fat SF4 machines set up.
I've also been listening to this fucking awesome (not amazing ;) Street Fighter podcast that was put together by some of the top Street Fighter players. If anybody is interested, it can be found at gootecks.com

My second question: I found this monstrocity on Edcos Blog.
What do you guys think of this (expletive) print ad for Street Fighter 4?

What with the amazing, incredible, sexy community of SF fans that span across the world, couldn't they have just had the fans make an ad for them? You know... like these?

I know, I know, I've had a huge boner for these fan made ads, and I've been posting (read:spamming) them nonstop, but I just can't get over how fucking amazing they are!! Chad of all people should appreciate amazing things ;]

Last night while playing SFIV, I said aloud that the animation looks amazing in 3D. That brought about a quiet shock from both my wife and myself. Sometimes being a retro gamer is hard.

My question: While Street Fighter created the genre and most of its conventions, do you prefer the Street Fighter II series or the SNK games of that era (Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and the early King of Fighters)?

I know that many gamers consider the Dreamcast to be a very retro styled console. Do you believe that this is related to the Street Fighter III series being released on it so early in its life?

I've put some time into SFIV and I like it. Kind of a mix of SFII and SFIII. I found it to be a little slow, but maybe that's because I've been playing a lot of SSFIITHDR as of late. And I'm still inclined to put an 'EX' between 'Fighter' and 'IV', and hoping a Hi-def hand drawn Street Fighter would be released. I wish, like the later Tekken games, that their voices would reflect their heritage, but the option to switch from English to Japanese is a step in the right direction.

Of course, I always want more characters. I think they should have finished the SSFIIT roster and included DeeJay and T. Hawk. And maybe add some SFIII characters, namely Ibuki and Elena. And perhaps add someone from SF1, like Geki. Or maybe even some characters from SFEX. I have not tried the new characters yet, but they don't seem to fit the SF universe. More Tekken-ish and SNK-ish.

Speaking of SNK, SvC:MOTM is one of the best versus fighters out there and should be ported to the DS or DLC for XBLA and PSN.

Can't wait until The Legend Of Chun-Li is out in theaters so I can not go see it. Shame on you, Capcom, for allowing this to happen...again!

Street Fighter forever!!

How cool was it when you could play Vega and all the bosses in the tournament edition? I loved jumping on the fence with Vega and getting his mask smashed off. It always reminded me of Kage from Virtua Fighter.

@ Pasco:

I've been waiting for a Match of the Millenium port to a system I actually own for a while. I was so hopeful when Card Fighters got a sequel on the DS, but apparently they changed the game for the worse (and had the game-killing glitch in the initial shipment, too.) I think the failure of that game probably sealed off chances for MOTM in the near future.

Can someone please tell me how to do Ken's handcuffs or Guile's freeze move from the original arcade version of Street Fighter II? It's been a mystery to me up to this point, but I remember being amazed when people would execute these bugs at the arcade.

Does anyone remember being able to use the Konami up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, strong, jab code on arcade cabinet Champion Editions to enter a debug mode? I was always so proud to show that off to friends.

Remember Street Fighter II 1/2? It was an unofficial Street Fighter II arcade board mod that let you cycle through characters mid-match using the 1 player button? You could also do super moves in the air before the game officially adopted this technique with Ryu and Ken.

Remember how there were incessant rumors of a boss code on the original SNES release of SFII that never proved to be true? I eventually cooked up a game genie work around that let you play half-functional versions of the four boss characters. I also came up with a game genie code on my own that spliced up the sound effects to make the characters swear ("Sonic Boom sh*t! Tiger Uppercut sh*t! Yoga fire sh*t!). Honest to god. I submitted my curse word game genie code to EGM, but they sadly never published it. :(

Enough reminiscing down bootleg lane ...
