RetroforceGO! records episode 79 tonight: Unrequited love in retro games photo

Happy Valentine's Day, listeners. We don't know each other very well, but um ... I wanted to ask you something. Will you be my friend? Just pretending is fine, too. We wouldn't have to see each other every day or anything. You could just come by like once a week and listen to my podcast, that would be enough.

I know there are lots of other podcasts at our school, you probably already like one of those. Maybe we could play a game together on Xbox Live? I have Puzzle Fighter. I really like Hsien-Ko, she's my ... oh, you're busy playing Gears of War. That's okay, we don't have to. Well, if you're not too busy later, maybe you could just leave a comment with a question in it for the show? It would really mean a lot to me. It could be about unrequited love in retro games! Do you like that idea? I'll stay up all night and make sure it's ready for tomorrow. There's also a contest this week where you can win something super-awesome.

I made you a bunch of other podcasts, but I don't know if you got them. I've been leaving them on your Destructoid every week. Heh, yeah, those were from me. I've liked you for a long time, but I guess I didn't know how to tell you. Anyway, I just thought I'd ask. Please listen to it if you're not doing anything later, okay? ;_;

Do any of you have any games loaned out to ex-girlfriends or boyfriends that you wish you had back but never heard from again? I myself lost a dear copy of Civ 2 for the PC.

Civilization 2 nooooooooooooo!!!!

But speaking of unrequited love, I think Princess Peach is like Kim Basinger in Wayne's World 2 and Mario is Garth. She's really just willing the fool on to kill her boyfriend for her own sexual kicks. I mean how can you explain the Koopa Kids otherwise?

Have any games really pulled off unrequited love really well so far? Are there any characters you'd love to see have their love realized? Who do you feel unrequited love for... in games?

Also; LOOK-BEHIND-YOU-A-DISTRACTION!

I know that everyone on RFGO loves retro games and I was wondering:

Was there ever a game that you absolutely loved as a child for reasons such as having so much fun but when you pick up that game now, it isn't as good as you remember it was BUT YOU STILL force yourself to play it for nostalgia's sake?

I have mine: Breath of Fire 3, one of my first PS1 RPGs and when I pick it up now, the leveling balance is so off and there are some necessary bits that slow down the story.

I think more people need to give some love for Illusion of Gaia, and Soulblazer.

Anyways this question is for everyone.

When you reminisce about the more obscure games that you have played, does it make you sad that more people enjoy these games or are you just happy enough that you were able to play them?

Also, Topher, just wondering: I got R-Type Dimensions last week. What graphic settings do you use? I typically have widescreen for both, with normal 2-D and Crazy 3-D, using the Retro 2.0 filter. Do you use something similar? Also, Arcade view: great idea, or brain-hurtingly-awful one?

do you wish that console generations would be extended just a bit further than the nominal 5 years, so that you would be guaranteed to see the true potential of the hardware ? games like mario 3, starfox for the SNES, and shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast all demonstrated games that were way beyond the inital conception and scope for the platform's hardware.

Ok, back on target...

Q: Speaking of unrequited love... have you ever gone through a period in your life where you questioned playing (or loving) video games? Sometimes I question the time that I live in a virtual world instead of the real world.

Followup: If you do how do you get over it or rationalize this addictive hobby we all have?

Disclaimer: unrelated. Did you guys ever play the Golden Sun games? Did you find them kickass. (Awnser: yes). Also, how come there aren't many (re: any) traditonal turn based, top view RPGs on the DS, apart from remakes such as chrono trigger and dragon quest IV? I always hear about the amazingly deep and layered DS library of RPGs, but I can't seem to find a traditional one on the level of the golden sun GBA games. Thoughts?

What was your first genesis game that you have played? and What forgotten game would you like to see remade/sequelized?

My first genesis game was Jurassic Park and I would really like for capcom to revisit/remake Demon's Crest from the SNES.

No! You bastard! You damn bastard!

Dammit Topher, I haven't thought about Nana's Everyday Life in so long. Gah, the ending! Grrr...

Oh yeah! I also had a question for all of you. How do you behave when playing an Arcade game, old or new and be it SHMUP, lightgun game or anything else in regards to continuing? Do you have a set limit on how often you'll continue, is it a money limit, or do you just decide one continue and that's it so you start from the beginning each time you play it? and why?

Also, I heard you like puppys;

I don't know if it was quite unrequited love, but Marin definitely wanted to be closer to Link than she ever got the opportunity to be. He lands on her island from an outside world she's always imagined and longed for, and thus immediately she wants to connect with him. She nurses him to health, sings for him, and then even goes on a date with him in the middle of his grand adventure. Ah, yes, and what a cruel irony Link's quest to wake the Windfish presents. I didn't outwardly cry at the end, but I was moved.

And then, if you beat it without dying...

Can love bloom on the battlefield? I know this may count for retro-limbo but the person i quoted was non other than Otacon from Metal Gear Solid. Otacon's relationship with one of the enemies named Sniper Wolf was a perfect example of an unrequited love.

I honestly cannot think of many unrequited love scenarios in retro games; lickily, the one I do remember is very touching: Robo and Marle in Chrono Trigger. I've always thought it was brilliant that the most emotional parts of CT were those starring a robot. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Robo's tears at having toleave Lucca. It was extremely sad. Can a robot not feel?

My example of unrequited love in retro games: Death to Ryu Hayabusa. Why else would there be so many damn frustrating portions of that game. Death wants to hold the ninja in her cold, eternal embrace, but the player will always continue.

I have no question, I just really wanted to be a smart ass.

I think Sonic is probably the great unrequited love of retro. We want to sit down with him and enjoy our time together like we used to in the old days, but he seems to get his kicks from tearing our hearts out over and over.

This is THE question that plagues the mind of retro gamers everywhere, at every waking hour of every waking minute of every waking second:

We all know that in Final Fantasy VI, Locke x Celes is practically canon. But did any of you ever wish that he would have had more of a prominent relationship with Terra instead?

And of course Happy Valentines Day and Hamzakuh to all of you!

Also despite the fact that it is Hamzakuh today, I still made this, just because:

I always have cases of unrequited love in games in which you have to manage lots of members in a rather small team, like the original Pokemon or Final Fantasy Tactics.

As a player I always tend to build the most powerful team and give the best items to the main characters or the most popular. But after I realize that there are a lot of underpowered team members that just stand there, looking at me sayin "why not me". And of course you can't say no to an Level 5 Poliwag or Diglett.

So, you put them in your team, just to stop feeling guilty... and they make you lose.

I want to ask you, Have you ever lost in a game just for putting lower level characters just for pity?

Also,

Chad, I remember on episode 68 I believe, when you were talking about STERN pinball, you mentioned that you would love to have a warehouse full of pinball games. Well check out this post I made about the Cupids and Canines 2009 Casino Night and Pinball Tournament. There are a couple of videos showing the Pro-Am Pinball Association Headquarters and its warehouse of pinball games. Plus, the proceeds from the event went to charities promoting canine cancer research and animal adoption.

I love starburst. I will share them with you.

Also Clone Manga is completely awsome. Nana's everday life is both the funniest and most heartbreaking thing ever.

I wish I had a good specific question but I don't :( , so I'll just ask a generic one:

Most memorable love story in a retro game? I like Earthworm jim and Princess What's-Her-Name. Jim's affection is ultimately undone by his own cow launching antics. Its the pinnacle of unrequited love ;_;

Three questions:

1. When two characters are in love in a game, is it more affecting than in a movie? I find it is, because you're attempting to fill the role of this character. Especially in some games, where the main character can't, for some reason, be with the person they love.

The best for this is Chrono Trigger. Chrono doesn't talk, and you kinda... "are" Chrono. If it were a movie, he'd be a character, not a vessel. So, when he falls for Marle, you fall for Marle. When Lucca falls for Chrono, Lucca falls for you.

2. Why can't other games nail this as well as CT did?

3. Crushes: best feeling ever, worst feeling ever, or best worst feeling ever?

I've got a little question: If you could take an already existing game and put it in another genre, what game would that be?

And example could be if someone made an FPS out of DDR. Yeah this question is horrible.

Also, Sweden rules!

Oh, and the other awesome thing about Chrono: since he doesn't talk, he can't tell ehr how he feels... just like how 13-year old self is, only in real life you're too scared. SO IT MAKES IT EVEN MORE LIKE REAL LIFE. AWWW ;_; nostalgia. i need to play that game again as a grownup and see if it's still awesome.

Locke and Terra in FF6! I think Locke got put off by her Esper-ness, figured her bits would be supercharged or whatever, and Ultima might accidentally get cast at the point of orgasm.

'You meteored my balls bitch!' That was when it was meteor.

And i feel sorry for Yoshi, living on his male-centric island of multi coloured but male only (i presume) yoshis. I bet he gets all funky in his pants when he gets a rare chance to see Peach or Daisy in, er, other games.

Also, I emailed you guys my details, for the swag I won for last weeks reader question, I hope you got them? I forgot to mention my Dtoid name, I hope thats not an issue. Whatever the case, the guy from the UK who emailed you is me!
