RetroforceGO! records episode 78 tonight: Classic gaming magazines photo

Before there was an internet, there was print journalism. There still is, but if advertisers and moneyholders have their way, that might not be true for much longer. If you grew up when we did, there's a good chance you spent many an afternoon waiting by the mailbox for the latest on the world of gaming, because back then, it was the only way you were going to get it.

Tonight we take a look back at some of our favorite gaming publications from yesteryear. Where'd they go? Didn't they used to be ... I dunno, awesomer? How come Nester never got his own game? All this and more on a delightfully early episode of RetroforceGO! Hit the comments and tell us about your own memories, and leave us a question or two -- related or otherwise.

Sega Visions was an awesome magazine. I remember reading that a lot, drooling over a bunch of games I never ended up getting.

Also, EGM's coverage of Metal Gear Solid, especially the walkthrough, was a highlight for me.

I still have the first issues of Nintendo Power tucked away safely. I'd be happy to scan some of the covers the next time I go home.

Know what made Nintendo Power way cooler than every other magazine at the time?

The maps of all the levels. I loved staring at the maps of games I didn't own (or was waiting to buy) and move my eyes over the stage map like I was playing the game.

I also liked getting maps for games I already owned and seeing different secrets and paths. Donkey Kong Country 3 got a huge map months after it came out, showing hidden Banana Bird Caves which allowed you to save the Mother Banana Bird and get the secret ending. Who knew there was a whole chunk of the map hidden away?

The only gaming publication I've ever purchased was EGM. No I didn't subscribe, and yeah, I paid for it off the shelf each month, that's how much I loved it. But now it's gone. So anyhow, with such a limited experience with gaming publications, I won't have much to contribute to the conversation. Enjoy your podcasting.

I was thinking of something, back in the day the concept of a secret mystery fighter like Sheng Long that no one heard of was completly plausible, indubitably inspiring legions of misguided gamers to undergo the herculean challenge of trying to unlock him; but now, it'd instantly be shot down. There's no mystery left in games, in a way we know to much about all the troves of secrets and the hidden mechanics behind them. While in a way this is good, I miss being truly mystified by the happenings of a game, and perhaps this is more a facet of no longer being a naive child then of games themselves, but would you agree that both the mystery of games has died away, and that you miss it?

Non wall of text form: Do you feel that we know to much about games now, and the mystery that led to rumors like Sheng Long taking hold is now dead, and missed?

the only game magazine i used to read was games master. to me that doesn't exist any more since its become a magazine of arse kissing and adverts.
The TV show that accompanied it however is very note worth and CLASSIC. I mean where else would the great astronomer Sir Patrick Moore give out tips on Zelda on a weekly basis. And insult and humiliate old skool games magazine editor Dave Perry on a weekly basis. i fucking love that show. *cries*

The gaming magazine I started out with was Diehard Gamefan. In fact, the first issue I bought had Cool Spot on the cover. I miss that magazine the most. It was a clusterfuck of text and images but the vast number of screen shots and the import game coverage was absolutely amazing.

After Gamefan died, I really got into Gamer's Republic but it died very quickly.

How long until gaming magazines are a thing of the past?

The first gaming magazine I ever got was an issue of Gamepro that had a huge article on Final Fantasy 7 (the game that got me playing video games) I still have the issue too. Gaming mags used to be huge full of ads and tons of previews and reviews.

Since EGM sadly left, I have no more gaming mags coming in. Anyone know of a good magazine still around that I can get a subscription to?

Random side question: If you had the opportunity to make one change to your favourite retro game, what would it be and why?

Yay for early podcasts! And coffee!

Did any of you guys ever submit envelope art, high scores, drawings, or anything like that to your favorite gaming magazines?

Also, do you remember the advertisements in gaming magazines being really... gross? I remember lots of bulging eyes, melty pizza, lolling tongues, and outrageous badditude. If gaming ads were scratch and sniff, I feel like they'd smell like locker room and fritos.

I grew up on Nintendo Power. I remember it starting off with only like 8-12 pages and then they started making those standard 50 page magazines. I really liked the cover of Simons Quest Castlevania II. I could have swore though the person wearing the costume was a chick. The game art was always fun too.

What was your favorite Nintendo Power cover?

"There still is, but if advertisers and moneyholders have their way, that might not be true for much longer."

I blame enthusiast blogs (dtoid, joystiq, kotaku) and emerging internet media (gametrailers, etc). Just like video killed the radio star.

There is no value add in print media anymore for gaming. I can't read a video trailer, I can read a game demo, and printing 50 images in a magazine of "hot game Y" is insane, I can get tens of thousands of reviews online within a day of release and have the scores aggregated for me in seconds.

The last hope for gaming print media is features. Magazines like Edge, RetroGamer, and Game Developer are the last good gaming magazines (with niche appeal) that are more feature focused.

That said I had subscriptions to (at some point in time) Nintendo Power, CGW, EGM, Amiga World, VideoGames and Computer Entertainment, Game Fan, PC Gamer (before it changed in 1996), PCXL, Next Gen, Game Developer, Video and Arcade Games, Hi-Res, Atari Age

I bite the bullet and subscribe to the outrageously priced Retro Gamer magazine from the UK (hence the high price to get it). It's easily my favorite magazine of all time. Do you think a stateside equivalent would survive? I certainly think it would considering some of the crap that sticks around.

Ever have your parents buy you a guide magazine for a game, only to start screaming at them "No! No! Get this away from me before I'm tempted to use it!", and then they slowly back away confused and hurt as they thought they were helping?

Me too.

Sweet, old gaming magazines for the win.

When you guys read Nintendo Power, did you have a favorite Howard and Nester comic?

The one about Tetris is pretty awesome. It had plenty of strategies for different situations you would run into in the game.

I (like many of us) was sent the first issue of Nintendo Power free for being a member of the Fun Club. I believe it had the map for the second quest of The Legend of Zelda in it. Back when I was a kid, I was able to beat that second quest, and that map did help a bit. I don't think I've beaten the 2nd quest in the last twenty years. It's been my pet project on and off for the last few months, whenever I have a few spare moments.

Retro Gamer is an awesome magazine and the only magazine I still buy to this day.

Speaking of UK Magazines it would be awesome if you guys could get Jim Sterling on or something. Just I don't you guys would have much to say about UK mags and they are a totally different thing to US ones, they had their own feel back in the early 90's and even to this day still feel very different to US ones.

For me being an Aussie we had our own mags and this is the one I grew up on

Ahh good old Nintendo Maagzine System, I still have issue 1 around somewhere cover still intact with its awesome Super Mario Land 2 cover.

Game Magazines were cooler back in the day. You were young, stuck in a 3rd world country reading Ultra Game Players with editors like Francesca, Bill and Frank O'Connor.

Those were the days.

I only owned like 3 issues of Nintendo Power back in the day, and one of them was the Super Mario Bros. 3 strategy guide. I still have that (it's really beat-up, and missing the first and last worlds) and the issue with Road Runner's Death Valley Rally on the cover, a game I rented a few times. That one has the last issue of the A Link To The Past comic in it. The third one had Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse on the cover; I lent it to someone in elementary school and they never gave it back. Prick.

I subscribed to NP from the 100th issue through the rest of the 64's lifespan, and reading it was almost as good as actually going out and playing the games I didn't bother to buy or rent. In fact, it was probably better than playing a lot of those games, because a lot of them sucked, but reading a walkthrough was actually pretty entertaining. You don't have to deal with shitty camera angles and collision detection when you look at maps and screenshots.

Truthfully, the place where I got most of my new game info back in the 16 bit era was Disney Adventures, which I had a subscription to and was actually a pretty good mag back then. The game section was all of 2 pages in most issues but I remember it fondly. Of course, they never really had reviews, so they made games like Rise Of The Robots seem awesome.

Blah blah text. I remember a friend showing me GamePro's "LamePro" April Fools section and being quite amused. It was the "Bubbles The Bubonic Frog 2" cover story, the game that introduced his pal, Snails!

I miss the crazy, non-streamlined design of old mags. There were some great backgrounds and borders/margins in the old Nintendo Power.

GAME MAGS RULE!!!

I wanted to do games journalism because it was an idea that seemed like heaven - get paid to play games to death, then deploy your opinion (well) in print. Alas, those days are nearly over, what a shame.

Games mags ive loved and subscribed too:

SUPER PLAY (just the best, covered anime too)
TOTAL
CVG
EDGE
NGC/N-Gamer

My question is for Chad, the adorable Collette and Topher, as they all work for Dtoid....and especially Chad and Collette, who are the most journalistic of the RFG gang. So: did you always harbour a desire to get into games journalism? For how long, and what magazines or writers inspired you in the first place? And did you have this cherubic image of an office overloaded with games and consoles, and just pure heaven basically?

Plus, last weeks show was frickin SWEEEEET!!!!

When I was a kid, my parents got us a subscription to the Nintendo Fun Club. We got three issues of this dinky little magazine that came every two months. In the third issue, they mentioned the coming Nintendo Power, but I didn't realize at the time that we would be getting it instead of the Nintendo Fun Club. When the first issue showed up with Mario on the cover to celebrate Super Mario Bros. 2, I lost my mind. We had Nintendo Power for 5 years after that and got a lot of awesome free stuff (Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, a wicked silver pin that said Nintendo Power).

Here's my question: Did any of you ever get your score into Nintendo Power's top scores lists (NES Achievers)?

hey flamecondor, thanks for stealing that image from my website. ;)

ANYWAY, yeah I was a Nintendo Power subscriber for 5 years, and when I moved to go to college I THREW ALL MY MAGAZINES AWAY IN THE GARBAGE! ;_;

I also used to tape every single poster to my walls, no matter what game it was.

Have any of you guys had a simliar experience or have you kept all your magazines since then? Also, have any of you guys gotten any letters published in any gaming mags? I've been in a few...

For better or for worse, did you always take Nintendo Powers word on what games were great and just never think that maybe they were a little biased?
I know I rented some shit games (especially in the N64 era) based off the word of this magazine.
But I know did the same for a lot of great games (SNES era) I would have otherwise never tried.

I remember thinking Earthbound looked horrible when I was a kid because the graphics weren't good (compared to DKC, also I didn't understand art style)
But based off the world of Nintendo Power, I tried it, loved it and bought it.
….But then sold my SNES and all my games to buy a N64 because they said the N64 was fucking great, and I was disappointed time and time again, with a few exceptions.
I'm still pissed off that I did that and I blame/love them for doing what they do.

Bastards...

I had gotten the first Nintendo Power, and I remember so much of that first issue. The cover is implanted in my brain forever.

Q: Has anyone else every killed a magazine?

An editor of your's, Jonathon Holmes, recently wrote an article tearing apart Game Informer.

Do you think that the majority of gamers' gripe regarding GI is merited, or do you think people dislike it because it's popular?

Additionally, you mentioned a former Dtoider got a job there, so they can't be totally evil? Care to weigh in on this?

One of my favorite publications had to of been Ultra Game Players. A big part of it was because of the sarcasm in the writing and how they weren't so serious. They were also one of the only console game mags to offer cd-roms with demos and game videos. Because of one cd-rom released by them, it showed me one of the greatest spoilers in gaming history: the death of Aeris. At the time that I watched it, I had no idea. Then my friend came over to check out the videos and I showed him that scene. He was like, "oh shit, you just got spoiled!" I wasn't playing FFVII at the time so it didn't really matter, but it still sucked knowing. I still have a few of those cd-roms too.

Now for a question totally unrelated to the short story.
Have you ever sent in a letters to the editors of any of the gaming mags? Envelope art? If so, was anything ever published?

This isn't an old mag, but a friend of mine recently sent me two issues from a 12.99 mag from the UK called, Xbox360 Magazine. You can sometimes find it at Walden's Bookstore, but they don't always carry it. This magazine is high quality. The covers are exquisite, with a glossy finish. Each issue brings a demo disc. I almost don't wanna open them.

Print media will definitely be thinned out pretty heavily, but I don't think it will ultimately die. It would be a shame to lose the cool page layouts. Web design and blogs are great and deliver wonderful bits of information but the layouts are completely different. Then again, I am super paranoid because I have a degree in print design. 0_0;

I like having old issues of Nintendo Power, it helps when my 5-year old brother asks for help on Banjo-Kazooie (original on N64). They're always nicer than a black and white, basic font FAQ. Also, for some reason the public libraries in my city had copies of EGM, Gamepro, Computer Gaming World and even NP sometimes!

Question: Is there any way for gaming magazines to reformat to survive? With FAQ's for advice, blogs and gaming sites for news, etc., what role can magazines fill to remain relevant? More features (retrospectives, interviews, etc.)? More "humour"? Or are gaming magazines on a downward spiral, with a worse position than most other print media because of the natural connection the genre has with the internet?
