RetroforceGO! records episode 75 tonight: Listener questions photo

IT IS TIME. Come forth, dear listeners, and lay your questions upon the anvil of Retro, that we may forge them into implements of MAYHEM. Bring us your queries, your ponderings, your thirst for knowledge, that we may begin to bestow upon you the wisdom of the ancients, then spiral off into a tangent about lemonade or Pogo Balls and forget what we were supposed to be talking about.

The day has arrived. It is time now for our Listener Questions episode. Rules have no place here. Sense has no place here. This is a day of random chatter; a time for absurdity and recklessness. Hit the jump, and FULFILL THE PROPHECY.

Hey, I have a question that I asked myself for a long time:
Do the members of the podcast play all the time Retro games or do they try to concentrate on certain days?
I for my part have my retro-days on weekend an sometimes I do a retro night, where I only play retro games 'til dawn...

#1. Have any of you ever played either of the games in the Musashi series?
The first was amazing, but Samurai Legend? Not so much... Still pretty cool though, especially the heavy ink cel-shading.

#2. Anybody got the Korg DS-10 yet? I've made a few c-blog posts about my crappy videogame covers with it, but I'm sure someone on this site could take it to the next level.

If Ultros was a guest starring Boss in Boner Quest would he attack you with dildoed tentacles? What would he shoot instead of ink?

You should have a section of the show where you can deem certain games as retro games. For example. Is Parappa for the PS1 considered retro? When should it be considered retro? etc.

For some reason I thought that RFGO! recorded on Friday nights instead of Thursday, so I posted this question to the thread AFTER you recorded the last show. I'm glad I'm on time this week.

Do you think that voice acting in modern games hurts the story more than it helps, especially in RPGs that tend to have emotional scenes?

In older games that had no VO, you would always hear the characters "voice" in your mind, so the way the characters spoke was essentially customized just for you. There was no bad acting, because you picked the perfect casting and intonation in your mind, usually without realizing that you were doing it. Emotional scenes in early RPGs never seemed hammy or melodramatic to you (well, almost never ^_^), because you essentially played a role in directing the scene for yourself.

In modern RPGs, I find it hard to take a lot of scenes seriously. No offense to the actors, but even when the acting is good, it often doesn't mesh with what YOU want to be hearing-- and of course, the acting isn't always that great. A major exception to this is a character like Auron from FFX, who was made great by perfect casting and delivery of the actor as well as the writing (at least in the English version), and I can't imagine that character without his voice. However, it seems like there's 1000 awkwardly-voiced characters for every one Auron!

So as a follow-up, do you think one of the reasons you guys go back and play old RPGs is because you experience the story the way you want to, without the filter of acting? Voice acting makes games more cinematic, but there are some advantages to having them be more similar to books that we are losing in the modern era, IMO.

Another question for you guys specifically: How did you get into game blogging? Did you just wake up one morning and say "I feel like blogging about Zelda today", or was there some sort of progression from other journalistic and/or creative writing pursuits?

Have a great show, you guys make my day:).

If I made a retro audio quiz à la Dyson in the good old days, would you put it in the show (assuming I didn't botch it?) Probably not this week, of course, although I could whip one up today. I just miss those.

What's the worst old game you ever played that you still love for some reason? I like Dick Tracy on the NES even though a lot of people hate it. Yeah, it gets a bit repetitive, but considering how most licensed games turn out this one was really solid and polished.

Chad, after interviewing G Unit, do you have any more high-profile interviews lined up? That feature was the best thing ever, and I would love to see more.

Maybe a certain aging celebrity with a wacky voice who likes to throw confetti everywhere? You know the one...

Not much of a question, but a comment on a previous question. Chad Boss: It would be a third person action game. Chad would be in the center of a large circular arena. Chad would be, of course, on top of a giant robot dolphin complete with laser beams and rockets. The dolphin however would be bolted to the floor, so it can only swivel to aim. On each corner of the arena, there is a Wii and a large TV.

To defeat Chad, you must log into each Wii and load up the WiiWare channel. It will then show a ridiculous title of a WiiWare game, causing Chad to laugh at a supersonic level. With each laugh, The conviently placed glass Chandelier will begin to shake. After Chad has laughed 4 times, the chandelier falls, and crushes poor Ellen. I mean Chad.

My Question:(**crosses fingers in hopes of finally getting his question asked**)

What are the RFGO crew's favorite movies of all time?

BONUS: If you could take any retro game and adapt it into a movie directed by Michael Bay(Transformers, Pearl Harbor, all things BOOM) and starring Shia LeBeouf, what would you choose?

I have an idea for an RPG, instead of one big epic journey filled with most side quests and stuff you don't care about why doesn't someone make an RPG that has 2 equal parts where you can play the good guys on one part and the bad guys on the other.

Do you think this idea would work? Has it already been done?

Also can I get some good recommendations for original gameboy games? I got all of the classics like Link's Awakening, is there anything super obscure that I should keep my eye out on?

Did any of you guys play Chubby Cherub on the NES? I have fond memories of it, but I worry that it may have been secretly terrible.

In that game you had to eat food in order to fly, and I think you barked at dogs. There used to be a lot of games about eating things. But not so many anymore. Is Fat Princess a return to retro-munching gameplay?

There have always been very few games about barking at dogs, but maybe that's because it's easy to do in real life. If dogs could read newspapers, do you think they'd take over the world?

Your powers combine to form The RetroforcGO-BOT.

What part of the robot are you, and why? For example, somebody's gotta be the head to keep everybody in check, somebody's gotta be the arms for the heavy lifting, and somebody's gotta be that sweet, sweet robot ass.

Discuss.

I've always wanted to recommend an episode (maybe the next listener questions episode) where we can ask things about you guys. I'm not talking about super personal stuff, but I feel like "I know you guys", but I really don't. I think it would be interesting to know where you guys grew up, what other jobs do you have, stuff like that. I guess its not video game related, but after 2 years of retroforcego, you start to wonder who these people are that you idolize from an internet podcast :D

This is a silly question: Do you guys have any frivolous stylistic flourishes you use when you play a game? For example in the 3D Mario games, I'd always grab a star at the end of a level by squatting down and doing a backflip up to catch it. Just showing off to myself really.

Are there any little tics or habits you pick up that are irrelevant to the game you're playing, but make you personally happy anyway?

Is there a retro hero or heroine that you've believed to be an incredibly bad role model for kids?

I've always though Ryu was pretty bad. He fights because he liked fighting and that's that. How selfish is that? Other character fought for family or for the honour of their country but..Ryu he was just a selfish prick.

How do you guys feel about the just announced remake of the old Squaresoft Gameboy RPG Final Fantasy Legend 2 [source]?

What gaming companies do you think will do well this next fiscal year despite the economic conditions worldwide based on the lineups you currently know from them?

Do you think that there could ever be a medically mute (as in he has an actual condition)main character in a game(of any genre) that could be well written and unique from all of the other "mute" main characters?

If you were to make a heavy metal concept album, like Mastodon's Leviathan (a loose retelling of Moby Dick), what would it be about and what would some of the song titles be?

Also, Chad I'm not sure if you know this, but you have a look-a-like in Rock Band 2. It was pretty amusing to see you singing Ace of Spades, Pretty Fly (For A White Guy), and then You Outta Know, which made me almost piss myself laughing. I swear the resemblance is uncanny.
