RetroforceGO! records episode 73 tonight: Year in review, Retrolutions, Lists! photo

Ah, the new year. It's almost upon us, and we're ready to kick 2008 in the nuts and throw it sobbing into the cold, rainy streets, where all its stuff will get wet. GTFO. 2009 is moving into your room and we're giving it your TV. How do you like that?

Tonight, we'll be recording our second annual List-o-rama, when we take a look back at the past year and put it all into list form, because we all suffer from terrible OCD. The best, the worst, our New Year's Retrolutions, and the top ten VC, PSN, XBLA and Wii Ware titles of 2008! Also, probably lots of stuff that has nothing to do with gaming. Hit the comments with your questions for us, and let's get bizzay.

Okay I ask this like every week, but are you guys going to touch XNA community games at all? They are getting a lot of coverage on the Destructoid home page since Jim "took on" biology wars.

I'm cool if the answer is F- No from Topher...

Also, i have to repost this shoop I did, after seeing this awesome header image

I hope Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime make somebody's list. Those were my plane trip games this Christmas and man were they adorable. They hit all the right nostalgic buttons.

yay! new year of retroness is coming. I R excited.

Question: If you could take two games from this year, and fix one (crappy mechanics, bad gameplay, monotonous) but remove the other from existence, what would they be?

Got a few questions for the Retroforce crew:

If you guys and girls all owned an arcade together what would be some of the gaming cabinets you would put in? and what would the arcade be called?

What was the best non-retro game of the year?

What was the best system for gaming this year?

After finishing Chrono Trigger DS yesterday, some thoughts crossed my mind. What makes us retrogamers? We live on games of the past, things that made us happy while we were kids. New stuff simply wonīt do it. Unless itīs something very different from what we had back then (Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright), simply more of the same wonīt satisfy us. Is really Chrono Trigger the greatest game ever made? What about Metal Gear Solid 4, or GTA 4? I believe these games are as good as or even better than CT, so why canīt I enjoy them as much? Well, I think I got the answer.
We ARE getting old.
I fell kind of sad to leave such good memories behind. Then again, I guess my grandpa miss his kites and marbles too. Thatīs a natural process, we are always evolving. Since you are putting the last year in perspective, I just wanted to know do you guys feel about "growing up" on your games of old...

Tatsunoko vs Capcom better make someone's list.

You know who you are.

Question: If you could rape anyone from any game this year, who would it be?
I know my money's on Shinobu from No More Heroes. That bitch had some major 'tude.

Retrolutions for me:
-Finish Baten Kaitos (Hey it has that Tower of Druaga section, it counts!)
-Start cblogging again.
-Complete a lot of other games.
-Get a Popeye arcade cabinet.
-Stop being a lazy bastard.

Also looking forward to Retro Game Challenge on the DS in a few months.

In other news, have you heard the rumor that Hudson has dropped support of the Virtual Console in the US to focus on WiiWare (see comment #22 in particular?) This is kind of upsetting.

Hi, long time listener, first time poster. I know, you get a lot of that.

First of all my question:What non-retro game that came out this year would make for the best retro-makeover? You know, like Tomb Raider Anniversary, only in reverse. What system would it be for, and how would it play? How would the mechanics be affected by the de-evolution?

Second, just wanted to say hi to Colette and let you know that I'm playing through Parasite Eve right now and writing about it on my cblog. It was in part because of the mentions the game occasionally gets on RFGO that I was reminded how much I loved it and that I needed to play it again:).

What games are Retroforce looking forward to next year?

Also for Topher:

I'm looking into Playstation 2 games and for some reason, Gradius 5 was seventy dollars on amazon. Is it really that great?

@Alael

I'm 18 (relatively young, no?), and I think that GTA is boring as hell, and that Mega Man 9 is the ballz. It's more about personal taste in certain games than just becoming older, it just that tastes can change with time. The best game is not always your favorite game.

With that in mind, I have two questions for the RFGO crew:

Are there any retro games that are considered to have not aged well that you can still play and have fun with?

And are there any games that are considered "time proof" classics that you don't think you can go back to?

Can't wait to listen to the episode and Chad's epic amount of lists. :)

Since I have no specific question to ask, I'll just list my Retrolutions:

-finish Final Fantasy IV (just got the GBA version)
-finish Final Fantasy V
-finish Final Fantasy VI (I'm already near the end of the game anyway... which raises the question why I haven't finished it yet. Shame on me!)
-finish Secret of Mana (My brother and I had it on the SNES but unfortunately never finished it. With the Virtual Console version, this is finally going to change.)
-listen to RetroforceGO! every week (of course ;) )

...and that's about it. Happy new year, RetroforceGO!

My retrolution: Finish Chrono Trigger and play SSF2THD a lot (hopefully with a fighting stick).

My question: Do you think cash-in games like Madden actually fund more innovative titles. I hear a lot of gamers complain about mainstream games like Madden (Podtoid) because they feel that publishers concentrate more on cash-in games than risky games. But I think if it wasn't for games like Madden there's no way EA could have done Mirror's Edge, or Brutal Legend for that matter. I think that these games actually give developers/publishers the extra money to take a chance on a more obscure game sometimes. What do you guys think?

Questions:

What are your retro regrets for the year?

What are the new year's resolutions of different retro characters? (ex: Mario, Sonic, Mega Man)

Hey everyone, long time listener, first time poster and maybe one of the very few French listeners.

My Retrolutions :Play Secret of Mana and try to recommend Chrono Trigger to every gamer I meet.
My questions:-Topher:What do you prefer:A)Making fun of Anthonny or B)play shmups?
-Chad:Do you think dolphins could rule the world and make you prime minister of Dolphinland ?
I know you like to do lists so what is your top 5 ice cream flavor (This is so random I admit it)
-Colette:Chocobo or Chad ?(which one do you prefer to have at home?)
-Stella:Who is your favorite character in the whle videogame universe?
Please note that all these questions are random and forgive me because it is getting quite late in France.
Have a great year and know that you guys are famous throughout maybe the entire world

Accidentally hit enter too soon :P Here's my idea for a list: The Top Ten Side Characters of 2008. Big contenders for first place would be Daryan Crescend from Apollo Justice, Presedint Tanaka from Persona 3 FES and the Pooping Deer in Castle Crashers.

Also, why has everyone completly forgotten about Advance Wars: Days of Ruin in the disccusion of best game of 2008?

With many of us penniless or not far off, I see no better time than to put off major next-gen releases at $60 a shot.

That makes this a wonderful time to relive the classics through used game sales (or Not-roms). What games would you recommend to your loyal and handsome listeneres that you feel are retro gems that you feel are often passed over or never got the recognition they deserve.

1.Have any of you guys ever got a retro game that you never played in the past but now that you have played it became a big fan of?

When I downloaded Rez HD I became a huge fan of it. I just want to thank Topher for recommending it on the show.

2. Has any ever completed a game or completed a certain part of a game that they could never ever complete when they were younger? I only say this on the new years show because earlier this year I finally was able to complete Quick Man's stage going through the last part with the insta kill lasers without using Flash Stopper. I felt like the freaking man.

Also I'd like to make a list of some games I'd like to see on virtual console.

1.Pilotwings 64 for N64
2. UN Squadron for SNES
3. Illusion of Gaia SNES
