RetroforceGO! records episode 71 tonight: NiGHTS photo

"But zomuhgawd, that's not so retro!" Stuff it, grumpy. NiGHTS: Into Dreams was an awesome Saturn title, and one of the only games out there to have gotten its own Christmas special. In preparation for our own Christmas episode next week, we thought we'd take a look back at this classic, fly-aroundy adventure.

Hit the comments wih your questions for us, and we'll cook up some show for tomorrow.

Guys, will you be covering any XNA games? Due to the logistics of the platform, a lot of Retro inspired games will be on there. Heck, my game, AMMO, will be on there probably in January.

I only remember playing Nights at a kiosk in Toys R Us cause I didn't have a Saturn. But my question is would you consider Nights an Open World game and what do you think Nights has influenced in this current generation of games?

Who awesome was NiGHTS pinball in Sonic Adventure? I still play that from time to time.

what did you think of his/her voice?

did you ever play the gba tech demo of Nights? its pretty rad.

I played Nights back when the N64 was about to come out and I was all like "Meh, Mario can fly in full 3D" and I never cared about it. But, 6 years ago in college I played it at a friend's apartment and nerded out on it because I thought it was a lot of fun!

Where can I get a hold of this game on a modern console?

Here's a question unrelated to Nights. When Dyson comes back, are you going to attempt to include the sound of eating Pizza Rolls in the intro music? I guess it could be questionable, since Pizza Rolls aren't really a rating system, but it's still an important question that begs to be answered.

Here's a Saturn related question. Is it just me, or do the shoulder buttons on a Saturn controller feel like they were made by some third party company that spits out terrible versions of real controllers? Like something you would find in a grocery store in the toy section with 40 games built in.

they re-releases/remade it for ps2, its pretty cheap but its import only *sad face*

And I played Nights on the kiosk too. On that note, I finished Panzer Dragoon on a kiosk in Toys 'r Us. Nothing like coming back to reality and walking out of the store all sweaty and discombobulated.

Also, because of you guys I went out and got Final Fantasy III, Contra III, and Mikey Mania last weekend. They are all amazing.

Not really a question, but every episode since Stella's been on, I learn the name of a game I've never heard of before. They usually sound amazing and I have to look them up and read all about them after she mentions them. You have to wake up pretty early in the morning to surprise me with a new game. You're an invaluable resource!

I would also like to ask about the Wii sequel... I heard it was fun, but overall kind of a shallow experience, and I would like to ask what did you guys think of it.

Also, I just want to say, I recently started listening to RetroforceGO!, and it's my favorite podcast ever. Just saying!

Have any of you played Christmas NiGHTS? Ever unlock Sonic in it? I had more fun running around as Sonic in Xmas NiGHTS than I did actually playing the game, it was awesome.

Unfortunately never played NiGHTS, but I DID quite like it's pinball table in Sonic Adventure 1 on Dreamcast. That was awesome and totally made me wanna play the real game, but then my expectations were unceremoniously shattered when I played the sequel which wasn't much good, to be honest.
Would you guys recommend hunting down a Saturn and a copy of the game, despite the (most likely astronomical) price?

Also, have any of you played the shmup minigame in No More Heroes; Pure White Giant Glastonbury? It's so effing badass. Suda51 should develop a full version of it and release it on XBLA.

I have played Christmas NiGHTS.

And it was good. What I found most interesting was the way that, when you completed the game, you could change the tone of those singing the ending theme. For example, you could make the singer sound like Barry White if you moved the notch on the bar down a bit.

For my question, what do you guys think of the SNK Arcade Classics Collection?

I wish I still had Xmas Nights! All these years, moving stuff, it got lost in the shuffle. Sonic running around with a super high jump to catch stuff.

I kinda want to dust off my saturn and play all these games!

What did you guys think of the controller that came with NiGHTS into dreams? It quickly became my favorite controller for fighting games on the Saturn.

This game is the reason I'm in the market for a Saturn. Never owned it myself, but played it at a friend's house constantly. I dug the comics based on the game. Those were pretty rad.

I have very fond memories of NiGHTS. I absolutely loved the controls for this game. The character was on rails but it still appeared to have the fluidity and freedom of actual flight when the game first came out.

I didn't get a chance to try the Wii remake, but were the mechanics the same? Or did they try to incorporate the waggle into the game play? If they made a full scale remake of NiGHTS (360, ps3) do you think it would be better if they added elements to make the gameplay as fresh as when it first came out? Meaning, more realistic flight movement; or would it be better to stick to the original gameplay formula?

In lieu of asking another question about Nights, What other Saturn games were as good as this one?

Also, I've been listening to the band Mastodon a lot recently and I was wondering, if you could do a heavy metal concept album, what would it be about? For example, Mastodon's album Leviathan is a loose retelling of Moby Dick. So, what would you do?

I have a Saturn, but not NiGHTS. Guess I should get on that >.<

Story time: I went out Christmas shopping today (ending up buying more stuff for myself than for others, man I hate the holidays...), and I had heard there was a 50% off everything in the used game store here. Well, there wasn't really anything in the store that caught my eye, except Legend of Dragoon, Kingdom Hearts 2 (I didn't get it when it came out for some reason...) Psychonauts, and Super C. So I get up to the counter, and the kid tells me "Oh yeah, we're not having the sale anymore.", and I quickly glance at all of the stuff as he scans it, and think noo! But alas, I dropped almost 50$ (still a pretty good deal, but it would've been 25 :P). It always irritated me that gamestop never has anything past the previous gen (Hell, they don't even have Dreamcast games). Anyway, I also never find anything except for the same 5 games for snes, and only a handful of ones for NES (I got the only copies of Star Tropics and Megaman 2 the last time I was there)...

Wait a minute, what was I getting at with this? DIGRESSION ALERT! Anyway, Do you guys support the sale of used games? The mentality of "Oh, I don't know if I'll like this, so I'll wait to get it cheaper when there are some trade-ins" Really hurts the market, I think. The last few games that I've bought have all either been off xbla or Steam, and I'm really starting to think that digital distribution is the future. Thoughts?

What does the crew think of the actual character design of NiGHTS himself? I remember thinking that he was pretty unique looking when the game came out and was one of the reasons that I noticed it.

Also, if you could make a Christmas themed sequel (or remake) of any game. Which would it be?

I don't have anything to say about this topic... all I wanted to point out is last week I got Chad to say "Princess Peach is a Bitch" and then he said that was "Great!"

And no, I am not taking it out of context, it has been recorded for all to hear

Well, the NES, SNES, and Genesis controllers were pretty flat. That controller seems to have some depth to it (there's handles on it!). So yes, until then controllers were 2D.

I rented this game once. I thought going through the levels were fun, but the boss battles. If I remember correctly the boss battles were timed, and you had like a minute and thirty seconds to beat the boss. I only ever got to the first boss because I was never able to beat it. I didn't know the secret to beating it. I know you had to grab on to it and fling it into walls or something. But I could never figure out how to beat it fast enough.

and for that reason, I never really had that much love for the game.

I'm just curious to know how you guys voted in the Destructoid Game of the Year. Since this won't air until tomorrow, I'm sure that's allowed, right? I can guess that you all voted for a game that rhymes with Blost Blodyssey.

I owned a saturn and the NiGHTS demo is the only game I repeatedly played for a long time. Never really got around to getting the game. Course I only had like 2 saturn games.

On that note what are your favorite demos for games? I know that they only really came about with the CD generation but I still remember loving my little 5 minute game collections.

Why do you think it is that NiGHTS has appeared in more games that were not his then games that are? Doesn't it seem like that's a weird Sega trend with their characters or am I imagining it? Does Sega love cameos more then nintendo?

I never managed to play much of the Saturn (I think my cuz let me play street fighter once) meaning that this title is nothing more than a blur to me, which is a shame considering what people have been saying about it.

However in a Completely unrelated and self centered topic, I thought it would be kick ass to mix the delly/ chad rap from last week to a beat.
I finished it yesterday so if someone could tell me the best way to share this monstrosity with the rest of you that would be awesome.

Back in the day I remember really trying to like NiGHTS but the crazy little fella never seemed to go where I wanted him to. No matter how much I tried to point him through those little circles I never felt like I was really in control. Something about it didn't seem to work properly to me, then again i never played it with the 3d pad. Did anyone else feel this way? or was I just special back then? Also, I had very little idea of what was going on, what I was meant to be doing, why and how, and yet I still remember the game fondly, which strikes me as mighty WEiRD, so err... can you explain what I was meant to be doing?

Can you summarise NiGHTS in less than ten words?

Hi Guys

I've bought a lot of systems and played a lot of games for all of them and I have a special place for the Saturn in my heart. I never knew anyone at school who had a Saturn since everyone was on the Playstation craze. I always felt that this game in particular was very special to me. I felt like I was very fortunate to play this game because since the saturn at the time was no where near as popular as the N64 or the PS1.

My question to you guys is have you ever felt that way about a game.

Can I request that everyone sing the ending theme song? I need some car music for my drives into the city and you guys have the voices of angels. Also, remember the special levels that were unlocked during certain days on the saturn system clock like Aprils fools? I forget if that was on both versions or just Christmas Nights.

Nights was my first saturn game and reason to buy my favorite console of all time :)

I remember buying it because of the whole "buy a Saturn, get three free games" deal. I don't regret having it now, but I do recall feeling a bit swindled since I had no idea it was a sinking ship back then.

My question is, if any of you guys actually bought a Saturn back when it first came out, what was the deciding factor for you?

Wow, and I finally got around to picking up the Wii version of Nights this afternoon. So, I'll start off by asking what you guys thought of the Wii version. I have to say that so far I'm really liking it.

As for the original Nights, one of my most vivid memories from my younger, much wilder and dumber art school days was an all night session of Nights under the influence of psychedelics. I would never advocate drug use, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't pretty awesome.

NiGHTS is a game that needs to be brought to XBLA. I never had a Saturn, but I did play this once at a friend's. I remember being supremely frustrated with the controls.
