RetroforceGO! records episode 68 tonight: Sonic the Hedgehog with Jim Sterling photo

With the approach of what looks to be the first decent Sonic the Hedgehog game in years, we thought we may as well record an episode in honor of the speedy once-Sega mascot. We had some good times together back in the day, followed shortly thereafter by some ... well, not so good times. Really not so good.

But hey, there were good times, right? Let's talk about those. And what better way to do so than to have Jim Sterling, the Sonic Defender himself, join us on the show? He'll be completely out of his element and that can only lead to something interesting happening. Hit the comments with your questions for us all.

I can't wait to hear Sterlings 12-step plan on making Sonic not suck...

Even though Sega will most likely ignore those things and keep doing what they're doing...

Oh poor Sonic...

I thought the DS Rpg that came out a few months back would be the official "first good sonic since the early 90's" and it was meh.
For me, at this point, Sonic has built up so much ill-will that it would take a game as universally beloved and critically acclaimed as Bioshock to even get me to consider maybe buying a new Sonic game.

Is Marble Hill Zone the best theme ever?

I never played anything past Sonic 3, so I was a bystander for the controversy and hilarity of the later games.

Who says Sonic has too many extra characters?! :)

I say lets add more!!!

Besides a 'Flip the Dolphin' and 'Scratch the White Tiger' character (i can't remember topher and collette's fav animals, sorry :( ), what would you want to be the next epic sonic character to be named: '<insert name> the <insert animal>.'

Did any of you ever read the British Sonic comic - Sonic the Comic? It used to be ace with great stories. It had loads of different stories based not just on Sonic, but on different Sega games like Shinobi, Decap Attack, and Golden Axe.
I got it till issue 100, it was a fun ride, and had entertaining story lines all set within proper Sonic zones, sorry, geeking out, a shot of rose tinted specs

Alright, so when I saw what the topic was this time around I had to dig to the vaults and share some of my childhood memories.

Many moons ago, around when Sonic 3 came out, I got to go to Disney World. Make note, the only time I've ever gotten to go to Disney World. What was there? A MOTHER EFFING SEGA CONVENTION :D

I have now gone to the depths of my pictures to show you my early age love for Sonic XD I believe about this time I was also trying to make my legs run in circles and figure 8s like Sonic's too.. but.. that's a whole other matter.

(I was agasp! IT WAS AMAAAAAAAAZIIIIING! :D )

Now, not much has changed other than now I just have to HOPE for good Sonic games instead of just getting them most of the time. Although.. I'm not sure my fashion's gotten a whole lot better, but at least I don't wear a fanny pack. XD

Also, Knuckles Chaotix - Awesome, or AWESOME?

Did you guys read the rumors that Michael Jackson did the music for Sonic 3? I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed or not.

How about Knuckles Chaotix? I've been looking into the 32x and one guy at a flea market told me he had five of them, only one worked, and only for a short period of time. Did you guys ever play Knuckles Chaotix? I've looked at videos of it and it looked a little disappointing. But I still want it. It looks a bit like old Sonic games.

Also Sonic CD? I never played it, but want it. You guys ever play that one?

Me again. Did any of you guys play "Sonic Pocket Adventure" on the Neo-Geo Pocket Color? If so, what are your opinions on it? If not, how would you like to play an 8-bit version of Sonic 2 with an 8-bit version of Sonic 3's sountrack(because that's essentially what it is, though with different level layout)?

NEver mind I thought of ton of questions (and im board here at this coffeshop waiting so it will be long..) just now but will only ask some. Sonic CD (AKA the finest sonic game ever made that made the sega cd worth its cost.) It was sonic's biggist game almost nobody played(at one point it was going to be the real sonic 2) and made tons of improvements, The animated showed what sonic kinda would have been like in a 3d game. (Sonic adventure looks very close to the intro animations.) sonic's lazy 8 spin run was interduced (cant remember it's name now.) and never seen again, time travel, 3d special stages, ETC ETC. The biggist improvement was sonics amazing music was pumped full of steroids so..... The questions about the music.

The japanese soundtack or the USA "spencer neilson sountrack" for english versions what one Do you think fits sonic best? The are both extremely different playing each version make both feel different.

Do you think sega should have changed it or left it alone?

Was it "right" to change it?

DId you ever hear the music on the BETA version of sonic CD?

What type of music do you think fits sonic games and sonic world/characters period? There have been huge amounts of all kinds of music since the first game The "dreams come true" music or the remixed michael jackson music in sonic 3/sonic and knuckles? sonic cd? sonic adventure?"

I like them both the Q-sound mix fits the spencer nelison tracks fits the new age like tracks a bit better though so I give that the edge it sounds amazing on high end sound hardware.

Ripped a couple the tracks from the free music USA CD "Sonic boom" I got. So there extended cuts Keep theme handy.

EarlyforceGo!

This is madness!

Why do you think SEGA finds it necessary to bother with the werehog sections?

Scratch that, why does SEGA always have to put a gimmick in their Sonic games? Why can't we just have a 3D Sonic game without all the BS? Ex: Werehog, Arabian nights, badditude with guns, etc...

Also, who else thinks that the name Robotnik is a billion times better than Eggman?! Why did they change the name?!??

Me again.

Pics:

Me and my Sonic plushie(Sonic Adventure version) that need his eyes re-painted. I also have a Tails and Knuckles plushie(in better condition), but not here at college with me.

One more question:

Were any of you like me, in that you didn't get to play Sonic CD when if first came out, heard all the hype about it over the years, and when Gems collection finally came out, was disappointed by Sonic CD?

I was. I personally felt that there was too much of a vertical exploration aspect too it which brought the game to a stop waaayyyy too many times. It's good in its own right, but I don't agree with those who say it's the best Sonic game ever. That goes to Sonic 3(specifically(as with all my postslocked on with Sonic and Knuckles).

If Sonic and Mario had to fight to the death (or at least tell one gives up) who would win, base on their basic retro skills and then base on all the stuff we have made up over the years?

I say Sonic! Ya! I'm a SEGA fan.

I'll admit, I only know Sonic through playing games at friends' houses since I never had a Sega system.. but I do remember that ad for the Genesis that was a total Nintendo basher:

There was a drag-racer with a Genesis strapped to the back, racing against a cruddy old van with a SNES tied to the back (real fair, I know). I think they were comparing Super Mario Kart to Sonic or some equivalent racing game at the time. Do any of you guys remember that one?

People have asked what franchise you'd like to give the Mega Man 9 treatment to (bring it back to its roots, graphics, gameplay, and all), but aside from Mega Man and Sonic, are there really any other franchises that could benefit from this type of treatment? I can't think of any other age-old characters whose original games were the bee's knees, but then whose later games were awful exploitations that shouldn't have ever existed, can you?

I would also like to inquire if Sterling has ever considered kissing Sonic, but more specifically if he would still do so while hes revving up his spin attack. Granted that would leave a "Blue Blur" on Jims face and you wouldn't really know where you were kissing.

In short, Ass to Mouth?

First of all I want to know exactly what the heck happened (in details) when people refer to Sonic having sex with a human woman...

A Bizarro Question: What are your most hated retro games? (as much as I like hearing the word AWESOME in each sentence, there must be games you dont like)

Are there games that share the same "curse" as the castlevania games, (2-D = Awesome; 3-D = Crap)... Sonic is an understatement in this case, it might as well be called the Sonic curse in fact...

How many Sonic games do you guys own currently with the collection compilations counting as only one game?

What are your opinions on Sonic Xtreme? Do you feel that if it was released in its original conception(that is, using the Nights engine) that maybe Sonic games now-a-days would be different? Do you hate Yuji Naka for being a big bitch and not let Sega of America use the Nights engine to make Xtreme, thus dooming it to its fate of not being released?

Hey guys,

Oh, right. Qalamari KAL-uh-MARR-ee.

Could you please discuss the change from the excellent chiptunes on the Genesis (the music in Sonic sounded better than anything else on the console, in my opinion) to the hard rockin' Bass thumpin' Lyrics havin' garbage that's accompanied the later games? I'd also like to know what you thought about the Sonic and Knuckles add-on-pack, and if your mind was blown when you realized that Miles Prower = Miles Per Hour.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, could you discuss Sonic as a character? His design is fantastic, it took the world by storm and is instantly recognizable. He became the face of Sega immediately upon his conception and stood toe-to-toe with a character who's as recognizable as Mickey Mouse.

I think you guys discussed before how Mario's design was by neccessity... they couldn't show hair, so he had to have a hat. They couldn't show a mouth, so he had to have a mustache, etc. Sonic was created later and had all the elements of refined design behind him. I'd just like to know what you all think of how Sonic's design has affected his games and how people think of him.

And since I just dropped a wall of text, it's picture time.

Are these still Ok or is Stella gonna get jealous?

I can't remember where I got this picture from (though it clearly originated at Halolz) but I thought you guys'd appreciate it.

I kind of hope this dog escaped and bit the guy after the picture.

I have never reached level 999, but what about you guys? Or on a related note, have any of you ever tried to reach a fabled level of a game you only heard about on the school bus?

There was a far better sonic comic that came out from sega/sonic team before the first game was relased and was givin out free, and you got one with the game near launch of sonic 1.

so when i was younger I took a bunch of them since the dude at the counter said I could.

I should scan it,

it explains why sonic is blue and why Dr.eggman is dr eggman,

hint involves egg soda and a waky ass machine...

It never made it passed issue 1.

and no i dont want one based on the archies comic after seeing that comic and how much better it was i never cared for it.
