RetroforceGO! records episode 63 tonight: We heart Neo-Geo photo

God bless the Neo-Geo. A lot of people never had one, and that's a shame, because it gave birth to some of the greatest games ever made. In fact, you'd be surprised how much of what you love and cherish now might owe its existence to the big console with the big controller and the even bigger cartridges.

Tonight we're taking a look back at what started out as the rich kids' console and eventually became the drug of choice for many a hardcore gamer. I know of at least two of us who are eager to yap our brains out about it on the show. How about you? Any fond memories? Hit the comments and we'll catch you tomorrow.

Besides Metal Slug and a ton of fighting games, what else was on the Neo Geo? A few shmups maybe, but other than that?

Also why is Collete always on planes?

Finally! I've been waiting for this episode for a while (see first and only blog post) I have so many fond memories of the Neo Geo's Arcade Cabinets not so much the system because this was pretty much the most expensive piece of video game hardware on the market at the time. I remember the only place I could play was at the Boys and Girls club in my area and they were really good at changing the games every so often so I got to play a variety of them. Mutation Nation, Fatal Fury, Magician Lord, Ninja Combat, Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting...I just remember thinking how beautiful alot of the games looked and wished I had something like it at home. Anyways, my question is, what is the first game you played and what went through your heads seeing what games had become at the time?

I forgot to add that the first game I played was Art of Fighting and thought how huge and awesome the characters looked.

I have never seen or touched a Neo Geo and have barely touched their arcade games. I cry at night because of things like this... but my question is:

If I wanted to get a really good taste of what the Neo Geo has to offer, what VC titles should I look at?

Oh, and you guys Frickin' ROCK!!! EARTHWORM JIM 2 for the SNES! Now that is what i call a prize!!! Thank you soooo very much!

What Neo-Geo games do you want to see on the Virtual Console? Why?

More importantly, could another console like the Neo-Geo ever exist? I'm leaning towards no.

I never owned a NeoGeo machine, but I played the hell outta the arcade games. Their fighters, especially King of Fighters, were my favorite of any fighters, 2D or 3D... and they still are.

The reason I say this is because the story behind King of Fighters was always epic in so many ways. I felt that even though each "saga" had their main characters, every character has a back story and contribution of the current story worthy of a RPG. I mean, seriously, almost every character had enough detail to where you wanted to find out about all of them in one form or another and why they were there in the first place. As you can tell, I love me some KoF (I could live without the 3D KoFs though...).

No disrespect to Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, or any other fighters out there cuz I have fun with a majority of them as well, but you guys have to admit that the story behind many of the King of Fighters "Sagas" and a mojority of their fighters have a lot more detail than just simple "revenge" motives like most other fighting games do. If I can hear anyone admit this on tonights show, I could die a happier man.

How crappy was the World Heroes series? Seriously.

Also, which arcade cabinets did you see more often growing up?

The single game standard cabinet? or the multi-game "i've got a memory card slot" versions?

In the midwest, I actually saw the 4 game versions more often, which I thought was kind of bizarre since I could barely even find neo-geo systems for sale much less anyone who owned one.

I'm so sorry... my laptop was crapping out momentarily and I guess it posted it about 4 time... again... soooo sorry.

But, as an actual question, if you guys had to pick any NeoGeo game (that wasn't a fighter) to remake to something epic for current gen consoles (I mean Final Fantasy 6/7 storyline epic), what Neo Geo gem would it be?

If you could have one neo geo cab in your house, and it was a three game model, which three games would you want in it?

Also, did any of you actually KNOW someone who had a machine at there house and if so, how many of those freaking expensive games did they have for it?

2 Neo-Geo Pocket Colors, Link Cable and 2 copies of SNK vs Capcom: MotM = FTW.

Seriously though the neo-Geo stable of 2D fighters is a force to reckon with. Mark of the Wolves taking my personal favorite just above Samurai Showdown 2 so the obvious question for the fighing fanatics among you guys and girls...which was your favorite Female and Male characters from ALL of the stables of 2D fighters?

Also just wanted to say love the show...Colette's fierce hatred of things that suck make me smile.

Oh one more thing....TALK MORE STELLA!

I know I'm too late with my comments, but...I'd love Neo-Geo as well if either my parents or those of anyone I knew could afford the thing! I mean, you'd have to be the kid from Silver Spoons or Richie Rich for your parents to spring for that stuff!

Finally Neo Geo it has to be better than snes since it lasted longer and it was fun playing it. I usually played neo geo at some arcades place. I remember samurai showdown, fatal fury, KOF, and that cool giant fighting monster wrestling.

Are we allowed to talk about the Neo Geo Pocket? I have one of those and it has pretty much the best portable analog stick ever. It has some great games too.

Do you remember how expensive the Neo Geo consoles were though!? I didn't know anyone that owned one, so I experienced most of the games at the arcade.

Also, is it just me or is Samurai Shodown 2 pretty much the best thing ever?

Neo Geo is the love my life. I may start crying listening to this episode. Speaking of crying. It is what I do when I see how awesome King of Fighters XII looks like it is going to be.

Important questions!!!

Magical Drop 3 is the greatest puzzle game ever Yes/no? (If you answer no we are no longer friends)

Which Metal Slug is your favorite? (Mine is 3 followed by 1)

As great as the KoF, Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, Metal Slug and Fatal Fury series are.......Please talk about some more obscure games like Ninja Masters, Magical Drop 3, Twinkle Star Sprites, Blazing Star, Shock Troopers, Crossed Swords, Nam 1975, League Bowling, Kizuna Encounter, Nightmare in the Dark, Waku Waku 7, Money Puzzle Exchanger etc. etc.

Have any of you guys played a Hyper Neo Geo 64. (SNK hardware from the late 90s. Only 7 games produced) The games are really amazing no?

When is Stella coming back to Baltimore so we can reignite our Samurai Shodown and Last Blade Rivalries. :D

Topher want to come over tomorrow and play Neo Geo? :):):)

OMG SO EXCITED FOR THIS EPISODE!!!

Sorry for the triple post......

But some memories are flooding back.

1990 the Columbia mall Babbages. They had NAM 1975 playing on the TVs, The Neo Geo and the six available games behind the counter. It was like some unattainable pedestal of gaming. I had read about it in EGM. The arcade at home. It was to good to be true.

1991 Magician lord at the bowling alley in Ellicott City. It was so hard and it took so many quarters from me. I loved every second of it. Playing the game on that big red machine that we all know on sight.

1993 Flickers arcade in Chatamn Mall. The first time I played Samurai Shodown. The first SS character I ever played was Gen-an.

2001 I got my first Neo cabinet. A beat up conversion cabinet I bought off of ebay. The screen would go out sometimes and you would have to hit it to make it work. I still loved her. Many other cabs and home systems to follow.

2003 When I was in Japan I walked around Osaka till I found the SNK headquarters and the famous arcade across the street.....Neo Geo Land. An entire arcade filled with Neo Geo cabinets including 4 50 inch cabs. It was the greatest arcade ever. Sadly they closed Neo Geo land a couple of years ago. :(

Today I own several cabs multiple, home systems and 40-50 carts.

I love Neo Geo. Shit. I'm getting a little misty. I'm going to go hump.....HUG one of my cabs.

......SNK 4 EVER!!!!

HEY YOU GUYS

Weeelll, if you guys could do me a solid, and you know I'm good for it, you could always put out a call for me to find someone that has a Neo Geo for sale in Sydney ;D

Otherwise you gotta of course mention those big-ass video tape size carts. Also... Sengoku.

LOVE. SENGOKU.

the stick on the neo geo pcoket is totaly digtal and clicky.

it only has 4 ways with possible 8 direction postions like a street fighter 2 arcade cabinet joystick there is nothing analog about it.

it is a replacement for a D-pad and fighting game arcade sticks not analog controls.

it will not register anything other than the 4 digital x-y postions,

Oooo! I never had a Neo-Geo, but I'm excited to see what you guys have to say about it. Was the home system the same thing (hardware-wise) as the Neo Geo arcade cabs? I've loaded up a bunch of Neo-Geo titles on the Retroforce Game Museum, but I wasn't sure if they the same, or if I'm playing arcade ports.

I just love the style of the games, such detailed pixel work.
