RetroforceGO! records episode 63 tonight: We heart Neo-Geo photo

God bless the Neo-Geo. A lot of people never had one, and that's a shame, because it gave birth to some of the greatest games ever made. In fact, you'd be surprised how much of what you love and cherish now might owe its existence to the big console with the big controller and the even bigger cartridges.

Tonight we're taking a look back at what started out as the rich kids' console and eventually became the drug of choice for many a hardcore gamer. I know of at least two of us who are eager to yap our brains out about it on the show. How about you? Any fond memories? Hit the comments and we'll catch you tomorrow.

I have never touched a Neogeo in my life, and hopefully this episode will persuade me to.

Also, would you say the Neogeo is RETROMAZING?!?!?!?!?!

It's a love/hate thing for me, actually. I got one late in the console's life, and I spent some BANK on games that were soon ported and/or made readily available in a major way. (I'm looking at YOU, Metal Slug 3!) That said, I'll never get rid of it, but I don't bust the beast out as much as I could since I've no one to play it with and the games I really want to play are available to me on current consoles.

I know, I know. "f" ports, right? Whatev. Still, I'll never sell my Rage of the Dragons...

Hey since King of Fighters XII is being made using gorgeous HD sprites, what other Neo Geo game would you like to see get a sequel or remake in HD or would you prefer the games left in their beautiful pixel-sprite ways?

I've never even seen a Neo-Geo in person, but I always like to hear people talk about the consoles I never had the chance to familiarize myself with.

Though, I do know that it has one of my favorite boot jingles. :)

My best friend has one and I still remember years ago when we would play Samurai Showdown how we would read entire magazines throughout our sitting during load times. Ah those were the days.

The closest I've come to owning one was the NeoGeo Pocket Color. I loved that system. As great as the NeoGeo was, the arcade stick that came with it was not so good. I played one recently at a gaming expo and found the experience lacking. Luckily, I now get my NeoGeo fix via PS2 and Wii and the great arcade sticks I own for these systems.

Question: If you could own a NeoGeo arcade multi-arcade system cabinet, which four games would you want in it? I've often drooled over Samurai Shodown III, Bust-A-Move 99, King of the Monsters and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2.

I have been the owner of a Neo geo gold system since 1993 by far the longist most used console I ever owned since they kept making games for it long after other consles died and no longer had new games.

i liked it so much i bought a Neo geo MVS and of course Neo geo pocket color.

Only the PC could match it's power around 1992-1993 and the arcade perfect samuri showdown fatal fury ETC was way better than the lame ports to sega cd genesis and snes, that well sucked...

Well worth every penny of it's price tag, unlike the Ps3 and 3do you could see a huge leap with the neo geo compared to snes genesis and TG16(with cd attachments at the time.

-First of all, what type of game would you say worked better on the Neo-Geo, then they did on other Systems?

-Was Metal Slug 2, or was it not, truly AMAAAZING?

Oh, and would a flash/other game based on the following picture be the best thing ever? I needed a good programming challenge, and I think I've got something.

I'm thinking 10 Robot Masters, Multiple playable characters, 3 Important Robot Stages, 2 Wily Stages, and a Roll-Played Tutorial level. Yes?

Do you guys remember Nick Arcade on old school Nickelodeon? It seems like whenever they cut to a "Video Challenge," there was usually a Neo Geo game to be played: Magician Lord and King of the Monsters were popular picks, as were Cyber-Lip and Ghost Pilots. This was pretty much my only exposure to Neo Geo as a kid.

Like many others, I have never even seen a Neo Geo, let alone played one. The best I can offer is this picture of my kitties, Star and Zelda:

Magician Lord is so good. It's like a shmup, except your character's limited to platforming abilities like jumping and ducking. Sooooo hard, but it's got great bosses, a cool variety of power-ups, and some of the best sprite-based graphics around. I love it. So my question for you is: agree?

Long time listener, first time commenter...

Every episode I've listened to has so far been about retro console gaming. And although Nintendo pretty much raised me as a child, I'd say a good 50% of my gaming time was spent playing PC games.

When are we going to see a RetroforceGO! episode on classic PC games? I can see whole episodes dedicated to the developer BullFrog, the Kings Quest games, Lucasarts back in their prime, the Wing Commander series, etc.

Other than that, I love the show... Keep up the AMAAAZING! work.

I never played this magical device you speak of. I did however have some compliments for you since for some reason there was NO PODTOID THIS WEEK! So, here we go!

Chad: The way you laugh trumps the cuteness of a war between puppies and kitties fighting with marshmallows.

Colette: I love everything about you to your sexy hair and exposed brain. Wait a second, didnt Chad kill you last week? EVERYBODY RUN AWAY! SHES A ZOMBIE!!! Also thanks for making Tomopop <3

Topher: I am super-jealous of your magical powers when it comes to shmups. Watching your replays on Ikaruga left me speechless, staring at the precision of each shot and movement.

Stella: I hope I get to watch the magic that you do with rhythm games, but then my head would asplode into colorful dots falling in a pattern to make the perfect song on your favorite game.

Suprise Guest(?) : You are the light in this bleak time that tears apart my soul and mind. My life was complete the second I met you and now I have to go take my life because everything is downhill after that and I've expressed that. If there was no special guest, give this to Rip Taylor when you get him on the show. Until then, everyone else share it.

Also, I got my CD-I from my dads house and its not reading the cds for some reason. Now I cant fall to my doom leaping to seemingly safe platforms on Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.

I have a question:

Are you guys/girls disappointed that the Guiness Book of Gamer Records seldomly mentioned the Neo-Geo, especially since I noticed the console's omission from the history section of consoles in the book?

(Btw, I noticed there is a 2009 edition coming out, which is great news)

I've never even seen one of these things in person. I have however played Metal Slug, and I love it! But a lot of Neo-Geo games have been released on the VC, and I'm honestly just not sure what the big deal was. Samurai Showdown II was cool, and Metal Slug of course, but everything else just looks kinda meh. Is there something else the Neo-Geo has to offer that isn't on the VC yet? What are some of your favorite Neo-Geo games?

Also, once more for good measure:

Did anybody on retroforce play the CD version of the neo geo? I never use mine anymore since the load times are the worst on any CD based machine I have ever seen..

I went out and bought the cart versions if they had them after seeing that it was worth the extra cost.

The RetroforceGo team doesn't seem to know much about classic PC gaming beyond the obvious titles (at least that's what I've picked up by listening).

Sadly, I'm betting most of the gems will be overlooked in favor of the cliched Neo Geo hits.

Okay, so I never had a Neo-Geo, so I honestly have no thoughts or questions on the matter. However I do have a question I would like you all to answer. You see I did originally ask this for Podtoid earlier this week but they cancelled on me so you guys get the rights to the question too now.

Which game would you play for your life? Literally. If you die in the game, you die in real life. So which game would you like to play or die? Of course it would be too easy to just call Halo 3 and duck behind a rock every three seconds, so I want you all to think hard and pick a good one. Who knows, the extra incentive to live may give Topher that extra boost in Ikaruga.

Also, maybe you could advertise MispronunciationforceGO!. Numbers are a little thin an compared to how many names have been mispronounced I find hard to believe we have all of them. :)

Unfortunately I'm a weenie, but I've have played a few Neo-Geo games on a arcade cabinet and some emulated games.

anyway, two things.

Firstly: GameTap's free service, yay or nay?

They got some good Neo-Geo games on there. Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Samurai Shodown and Twinkle Star Sprites are all there for free (legally), but require that the player watch a commercial and play with a banner ad at the bottom of the screen. Personally I don't mind this. Also It's not that fun to play fighting games with a keyboard (I use a Super Nintendo Controller with a USB adapter myself).

Secondly: What do you guys think about The Last Blade?

Personally I think it's freakin' awesome. I mean, it was made by the same dude who made Guilty Gear!
