RetroforceGO! records episode 62 tonight: Mega Man 9 photo

Yes, Mega Man 9. The game many of you have likely been cursing at for the past week or so, and a shining beacon of hope for retro gamers everywhere. Tonight we're taking a look at the Blue Bomber's latest outing, and the impact it may or may not have on gaming as a whole. We'll probably do our own fair share of cursing as well.

This week's picture comes to you courtesy of A New Challenger. I had planned to do pretty much the same thing myself, but he beat me to the punch and it was too funny not to use. Hit the comments with your questions, explosive outbursts and general greetings, and we'll get to yappin' for you later tonight.

YES YES YES THIS WILL BE AWESOME.

So I'll shy away from favorite level and or boss as I figure you will discuss that no matter what. So instead, I have three questions: If capcom makes mega man 10, would you rather see it done in the same way, or have them do updated shiny large hd graphics? Would you rather have mega man 10, or a new addition to the mega man x series? Finally, which classic franchise would you like to see given the megaman 9 treatment, being that it has had a game in its series that was on either the NES or SNES or Genesis or around that era? Thanks retroforce you guys are awesome!

I think we can all admit that megaman 9 stays completely true to the originial in terms of gameplay. It has been praised for bringing back the series to it's root but how much deviation should a retro revival be allowed? Is there a certain pint were it stops being a revival and just becomes a new game with a 8-bit style or some other things that ties it back to the older games.

Also, what do you think makes megaman 9 hard and unforgiving yet everyone excepts it. There are a ton of games that would be hated on for allowing just tooth and nail gameplay. What in your opinion allows megaman to me justified in how steep the difficulty is. (Just so you know I f'ing love how hard it is)

Yay, no doubt this episode will be awesome.

Question Time:
The ONE thing i disagreed with in jonathon holmes' review was that splash womans stage music was lacking the in the awesome that the other stages shared.
Personally, if any stages music was lacking, it would have to be Jewel mans stage.
ANYWAY, what part, if any, was lacking in mega man 9 for you?

Well, since I'm normally asleep when this is posted I PM'd Chad my question. It's funny that because I've done that the show post get put up early lol. I guess I'll put my question here too anyway:

Hi RFGO, I was in my college lebrary the other day playing Mega Man 6. So this guy comes up to me and asks what I'm playing, so I tell him it's Mega Man 6. He then replies "Wow, graphics were bad back then!" So I have a question: Do you think that new gamers are going to be able to apriciate Mega Man 9, this guy obviously didn't.

Thanks =D
PS: Can Chad attempt to sing Okusenman?

Oh man, I've been loving it so much... I bought an NES this week as well so I've been playing Mega Man 2 as well.

I was thinking about how well Mega Man 9 has been selling and I think it's mainly because it's an established franchise (obviously). Of course there's the nostalgia factor and everything as well. It got me thinking though, what other franchises could be revived in this way? There aren't many that I can really think of, but I'm sure there are a few.

What do you guys think? What other franchises could be revived in this way?

Also, do you think Capcom might start doing MOAR Mega Manz in an 8-bit style?

ALSO 2!! Do you think the positive sales of Mega Man 9 will convince more publishers to put out 8-bit or 16-bit games? Possibly even de-makes?

What do you guys feel about the DLC?

Are E tanks cheap or not?

Oh, yay.

Questions(and boy, do I have some):

1) How do you feel about the game narratively compared to the rest of the series(that is, not just the Classic, but X, Zero, ZX and Legends. Ya know, the canon games). Are we starting to see the groundwork laid for a game that connects the Classic and X series?

2) Was Megaman 9 really that hard?

3) How long did it take you to beat it your first time through?(for me, 2h4m52s on the end game clock, but I lost a good half hour because I didn't realize the game doesn't auto save progress, and about another 15 or so mins because I reloaded once during Wily's Castle)

4) Was Megaman 9 really that hard?(or am I just that good?)

5) Favorite stage music? Tornado Man's stage, right?

6) I noticed there was no "Sound Test" mode in the game. Ultimate blasphemy? Opinions?

7) I felt the game provided the player with more lives than was needed most of the time. Any of you guys feel the same way?

8) What Megaman game do you consider to be the hardest one(note, not restricting this question to just classic series, all Megamanz are fair game; and no, Megaman 9 is not the correct answer)?

9) How do you feel about Capcom NOT inclding multiple difficulty levels in the stock game when all other Megaman games in recent have had a harder difficulty included(oh, can't wait for that hard mode DLC to hit the PSN)?

10) Where to go next for Capcom: Megaman 10, Megaman ZX 3, or a new Megaman Legends?

11) How come Splash Woman isn't weak against Plug Man? I thought that in Japan, all women get weakness against "plugging". Did we(in America) get some kind of censored version of the game where Splash Woman is immune to getting "plugged" by Plug Balls? (on a serious note: I thought Electricity beats Water. Why did Capcom ignore this rule of elements?)

Anyhow, umm...woot, Megaman 9. I expect an extra serving of 'PEW PEW PEW' to make up for last week. And...umm...let the show begin?

As awesome as MM9 is, how do you guys feel about the lack of sliding and the charge shot? as someone really just getting into the series, I'm fine with it, as I've only played MM1 extensively, but do you seasoned veterans mourn there loss or appreciate the return to the simpler roots?

Are you guys going to keep replaying this game to get better Time Attack scores, or challenges? I know you guys normally don't like achievements, but I think they really help this game.

I just finished Time Attacking the main 8 stages and I've noticed this game isn't nearly as hard once you have the levels down.

Do you guys think Megaman 9 will start a trend in new retro games? Do you think we might see a new 8 or 16-bit game from companies like Konami, Square Enix, or Nintendo? Thinking about a new 16-bit Final Fantasy or Super Mario Brothers 4 gets me excited. I've noticed many retro-style games on the DS, but they just don't give me the same feeling Megaman 9 did.

Also, Favorite Music? (Tornado Man!)

I have been working on a cblog entry about this question but seeing as I am having problems organizing my thoughts for the cblog, let me throw the subject out there for consideration by your expert opinions.

Don't you think that Mega Man 9 sets a horrible precedence for game developers to the detriment of us retro gamers? Tons of memorable franchises and characters such as Mario, Zelda, Contra, Metroid, Castlevania, have very successfully grown and evolved through and into the modern era of gaming. Why do we give a free pass to Capcom for not moving forward with the Mega Man series, especially since, even looking at 8, the series really had a lot of promise looking forward? Hell, we even applauded Capcom a few months ago for the update of Bionic Commando. Why are we basically letting Capcom take the easy way out?

And going back to my original statement of the question, don't you think that with the success of Mega Man 9, we are basically signaling to developers that 2-D and retro gaming is allowed to stagnate? You guys lamented in previous podcasts that newer retro games like New Super Mario Bros. and Metroid Fusion were pretty much lesser attempts by the developers and not really given a full-blown budget and treated as a major project. So don't you think we are encouraging developers to make retro games of half-hearted effort? Will the next Metroid game be the same graphics and sound as the first NES one? Or will the next Zelda look like the first NES one?

Just curious if you guys have thoughts on this before I codify it out in a cblog entry.

Mega Man 9 is awesome, no doubt there, and so far seems to be selling quite well. But do you think that a product like Mega Man 9 could succeed as a full retail release, especially at full price? Would this kind of return to roots even be possible without the rise of digital delivery and the associated price point?
Tascar's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/02/2008 17:08

Oh yeah, with respect to my previous comment, when I say that Mega Man 9 is a lesser effort, I refer to the fact that it uses tons of old recycled graphic, sound, etc resources (Super Mario World arguably used relatively little recycled resources from Super Mario Bros 3). And given that the technical limitations of the NES don't actually exist anymore, I doubt that it was as challenging to develop. I also refer to the fact that it is well-known that Mega Man 9's design was due to budgetary reasons, meaning that Capcom didn't see it worth their while to give it the works.

All - What do you think of the relevance of the story in the series? Playing MM9 so far has a clever storyline with self-referential humor that I really dig, but some of the other games have been all over the place.

See these two: Megaman 8 Ending: Voice-over hell

So, Mega Man 9 is awesome and stuff, but I have the feeling that the DLC, such as Proto Man, the additional difficulty levels, etc. were meant to be in the game (some levels are designed with areas accessible only by sliding, for instance), and were cut out so that Capcom could make some extra cash by offering these bonuses as DLC, much like Namco and their Beautiful Katamari. Do you think that Capcom purposely pulled bonus content from the game to make a little extra money off us hardcore folk?

As an aside, what other classics would you like to see get the Mega Man 9 treatment? I know you've probably talked about this before, but if you could just pick one franchise, why would you and what would you do to make it extra special?

Also, give Craineum the prize this week. He deserves it.

Out of all the Mega Man games, which boss is your favorite? Also, would you ever like to see the series move on to a main villain other than Wily or do you feel that would betray the series?

I was listening to... I think it was Retronaughts? Mabe Retrocity on IGN... And someone said they were pissed that Mega Man 9 was allowed to get away with this. I know that you guys are obviously thrilled about this release and I don't think that the entire industry will follow this... However... Then again, maybe they have been.

I mean, look at Nintendo's biggest announcement today, it was Punch Out on the Wii. The only reason that game has any merit whatsoever is because it has the nostalgia factor. What about new franchises though? It seems they're becoming less and less and that the quality of new franchises is also declining. Scary times... Opinions?

@Pig Mask: I for one don't miss the slide or charge at all, and I grew up on Mega Man 5.

Also, I should have figured you were working on something, Topher, but I just couldn't leave it up to chance.

I'm trying to do the Mr. Perfect challenge right now, and I'm currently stuck on that damn flower miniboss (the second time.) You know the one.

Did you guys shit a brick when you reached the shark boss? I immediately thought of Hamza.

How do you like the challenges and time attack modes? They've really been sucking me into this game. I might end up purchasing the two new levels when they become available. Still iffy on the new difficulties.

How great is it that the 9th game in the classic series, this complete revival, turns out to be one of the best Mega Man games ever, and a fantastic game in its own right?

Did you notice the grass in the foreground on Concrete Man's stage? Little details like that totally make this game.

My first time through, there were lots of little moments where I thought to myself "Hey, that's neat!" It seems like every level has some set piece or enemy that feels fresh despite the fact that this is the ninth entry in a series (indeed, more than the 9th entry counting all of the other games with Mega Man in the title.) What is your favorite or most memorable single moment from the game? I'm personally fond of the antigravity shafts in Wily's Castle where you have to use Newton's 3rd Law to propel yourself around enemies and spikes. That was awesome when I first reached it.

From a level design perspective, I really love on Tornado Man's stage how there's that one jump where you can't quite make it onto the next block, but the wind pushes you back onto the little gray cloud. Then a little while later there's another large gap and you have to figure it out for yourself that the gray cloud in between is a safe landing spot, which the game taught you a couple screens ago.

Now that Mega Man 9 is a huge smash hit as far as sales, do you expect to see other companies cashing in on the idea of bringing out new retro games in the same way that companies have been putting out garbage party games on the Wii after Wii Sports's success?

I’ve mostly been a fan of the X style Mega Man games, but I do have some fond memories playing a little bit of Mega Man 2 when I was four, and recently beat it on the Anniversary Collection. I’ve only play through the trial section of Mega Man 9 so far, but I plan on buying it as soon as I can. I was not a Dtoider when you guys had your first Mega Man episode, so I hope you won’t mind if I ask a questions in the assumption that this is a sequel to that episode.

1) Have any of you played any of the other Mega Man games made by IntiCreates (Mega Man Zero 1-4 and ZX)? If not, I highly recommend them (preferably starting with Zero 1 and/or 2).

2) Call back to ep 28: Did Chad ever find his old Toy Man concept art? I would also like to hear more Robot Master Concepts that he might remember.

3) For those who haven’t bought Mega Man 9 yet and own multiple consoles, what system would you recommend they get it on? Personally I considered getting it on WiiWare for the NES style controller, but I’m leaning more heavily toward getting it on XBLA and using my 360 Advantage (AKA Hori Stick), and Custom Soundtrack so I can play music from other Mega Man games on a second play through if I so choose.

4) Unrelated to Mega Man: will RFGO 64 be about the Nintendo 64? I know I’ve bothered other Podcasts about this, but I’m generally curious about it.

I’m looking forward to the show.

P.S.

Question 1: What other game franchise would you like to see return to its retro roots? (I pick Mario!)

I'm not sure if you have answered this one before, but if you have, then how about we do a little twist?

Question 2: What other game franchise without retro roots, or wich is unlikely to return to its retro roots, would you like to see in retro style?

Also may I have a word? I've been playing through Megaman 9 these days, with tears of nostalgia in my eyes I may add. And I must say, I've never felt so satisfied with completing a game in years! Is it weird that I've become a huge Megaman fan, even though the first time I've ever touched a Megaman game was Megaman 1 earlier this year? I was born in late 1990, so I missed out on alot of classic gems. But my older sister had an NES with about 5 games, wich I occupied most of the times. But even though I havent been exposed too much with retro goodness, I still prefer older games over today's games. Though my lack in knowledge of retro games is too miniscule for me to consider myself a retro gamer, I still consider myself a retro enthusiast.

Did you guys, as children playing the old Mega Man games for the first time, figure out which order to fight the Robot Masters on your own and what weapons work on each? Or did you (like me) use a source like Nintendo Power to tell you the circular pattern and pick a starting point based on which stage was easiest for you?

I ask because I'm trying to play Mega Man 9 without the foreknowledge of which Robot Master is easiest to beat with the Mega Buster (and getting my ass handed to me as a result).

Also, I'm currently making a Mega Man 9 themed ringtone. Once it's complete, it'll be available with the Retroforce-themed tones here:
