RetroforceGO! records episode 45 tonight: Nonsense, mayhem, listener questions! photo

Three of our favorite things! This week's episode ends in a five, and that means it's time once again for a 100% listener questions episode. Every tenth podcast, we like to open it up to you guys, and personally, these are my favorite episodes.

Why? Because they invariably descend into madness and jackassery, and that's just the way we like it sometimes. So hit the comments and ask us whatever you like. Seriously, anything. Games, systems, dolphins, melon bread, whatever you want to know. As always, the best question will win you something cool, so make 'em good!

I sold Zack and Wiki for 7 dollars to get money for a comic con ticket. Right afterwards I felt like crying but I was desperate. Is there any way I can redeem myself outside of sexual favors or am I just doomed to be a filthy whore forever?

Oh, I also wanted to ask about your fine yardsales and the selection of merchandise available to the discerning consumer at them.

Seriously, did we ever get an explanation as to the orgins of the yardsale joke? I must have been away that day.

Hey I just joined so here goes,
1. It isn't super retro but since I know you guys love rpgs I was wondering if you had played the Golden Sun games. Being the young wipper-snapper that I am, these got me into rpgs.
2. I wanted Topher to know I bought Ikaruga today for the gamecube mostly because of him.

When the retroforcego crew play RPG's like final fantasy, are you just trying to get through the storyline and to the finish, or do you powernerd (grind) your party to epicness and kill all the optional bosses, and get all the kick ass items as well??

I know you guys all like arcade games, do any of you own any cabinets?? What would be your favorite game to pick up if you don't??

And finally, if episode 44 wasnt official, hows does this become 45?? And if were releasing things through c-blogs, can we maybe have the lost episodes you guys were talking about in episode 35?? They should be entertaining.

Since I know that Dyson can already pronounce my screen name, lets have him pronounce my real name: Iohannes Meraodith.

Just joking. Real name is Harrison Gross.

And now, on with the questions:

Do you guys actually like Pipe Dream, and either way what did you think of the hacking minigame in Bioshock?

Nobou Uematsu Vs. Koji Kondo: Who wins?

Has Chad gotten all 242 stars in Mario Galaxy yet, and if so, was it worth playing the game again as Luigi to get those last two?

How many of you would enjoy a Fire Emblem anthology for the DS including fire Emblems 2 through 5? And would you also enjoy a mother anthology for the DS? Because I have a really big attraction to these imaginary compilations.

How excited are you for FFIV(II) for the DS coming out this summer? How many baby dolphins/chocobos/whathaveyou would you kill to get a FFVI(III) for the DS?

What are each of your least favourite Zelda games? (Canadian, not British)

Have any of you complete Mario 2 (JP)? If so, have you also beaten world D-4 in the original version?(All stars made it easier)

Mario Kart Wii: Your opinions?

Finally, have any of you guys played D&D at all? I know it's not really video game related, but oh well.

continuing Redzie's line of questioning:
4.) What would your Final Fantasy job class be? (knight, black mage, etc...)
5.) What race would you be? (assuming you had a choice in the matter)
6.) Which FF's world would you reside in?
7.) Apply above applicable questions to the Phantasy Star series.

Listening to the past 44 episodes has made me want to go retro and play the stuff I never got to play as a kid (Like pretty much everything on SNES). So I was wondering if the Retroforce crew had any suggestions on the best places to buy retro gaming stuff.

Also, I found this old picture the other day and wanted to know how many awesome points I get for having Super Mario wallpaper when I was a kid:

What are your thoughts on Street Fighter 4?

And if you were to splice the DNA of a Dolphin and a Chocobo, what would the end result be?

P.S. I watched There Will Be Blood on DVD yesterday, fucking awesome movie.

Also I never told you this, but the reason I was able to beat Contra 4 on Hard without a continue was because I was listening to RetroForceGO! when I did it. You guys also helped me through Ninja Gaiden Black.

A question that came up for this weekend for me, and I would love to hear all your perspectives on it. I spent a good 8 hours with friends playing arcade beat-em-ups from X-men to Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, but it got me thinking, Where the heck are all the NEW beat-em-ups (and no "The Bouncer" wasn't good enough)? Do you guys think this generation of gaming no longer caters to 2+ player brawling action? Or could maybe the release of Castle Crashers (whenever that may be) herald in a new revolution for them? The gameplay style never seems dated to me since its just... fun, and there's like no barriers to entry to enjoy them.

Corrent me if I'm wrong, maybe I just haven't been tracking any beat-em-up releases. If there was something good, give it a shout out, I'd love to know.

Side Note: the thought also gets me antsy for the RetroforceGO beats of rage mod! Do Want Soon!

Has broken game design ever ruined a game for you?

For example, I really wanted to get into The Bard's Tale. I love RPGs and was intrigued by the idea of an RPG that parodied RPGs.

The thing that ruined the game for me was, every time that you wanted to go into a house and break other peoples stuff a load screen came up (on the Xbox version, at least). I mean, come on.

Two Q's, both VERY peripherally related to the RE5 thing, but not really.

01. What person, or company, WITHIN the video game industry, do you think is doing the most damage to the industry right now? Jack Thompson doesn't count. And, what can they do to HELP the industry?

02. What games do you most applaud for their responsible representation or depiction of race, gender or sexuality issues? What did they do right?

First of all, I lend all my support to an Earthbound/Mother themed episode.
Secondly, i don't remember this being asked before, so here goes: What is your favorite guilty pleasure game? I mean either a so bad it's good romp or a not-so-well recieved game that you enjoy more than you probably should? Or maybe even something that you forced yourself to like, like I did with Monster Madness.

A secondary inquiry in case the other one had been previously awnsered: How much does it bother you from a gameplay perspective using translation guides for Japanese games? I'm currently going through Mother 3 and this is the first time I'm using one, and I got to say it's quite inconvenient and a little disbarring to have to look back and forth between screens, it really detracts from the experience. Though it's a lot better than playing it with little to no clue as to whats going on.

Nearly every game that's impressed the gaming public in the past few years has been some sort of hybrid. COD4 added RPG elements to its multiplayer, Half-Life 2 & its siblings brought adventuring elements (puzzles, story-driven objectives), even Burnout Paradise gives a nod to the popularity of sandbox-style games with its new open-world model.

My question is this:
<em> What Retro game would've kicked even more ass as a genre-hybrid? <em>
Super Mario 3 with RPG-leveling elements? (Tanuki Suit +3 FTW!)
Metroid with fighting-game combo moves?

I remember Chad mentioning that they used to design Mega Man characters and levels in class. I remember doing that as well. I also remember working on a whole plot and plan for an RPG after playing Final Fantasy VI.

So my question is, have any of you had a specific game idea or whatever that you really wanted to see turn into a real game and what was it?

You guys have plenty of questions already. So here's my lame question:

The Scenario is a Final Fantasy Zombie Apocalypse:

Which would you rather have: An airship, a castle that travels underground, the Doom Train, or Sprint Shoes.

Also, if you had to pick between having one spell: Fira, Esuna, Cura or Imp, which would you pick?

What would you offer if invited into the design process of a new game that interested you (I don't know of any of you have done so already)? Is your love of games just for personal enjoyment or do you ever think "Man I would have loved to design a level like so-and-so..."

Topher would you not relish contributing to the strategy of a a Shmup?

Colette + Dyson would you not love to suggest features or story to an RPG?

Chad must you not dream of ways to add dolphins to a platformer?

Reverend is there something you'd like to put forth into the gaming world that can chill you the fuck out?

ps, I love you guys!

Recently I have got to a boss in Chrono Trigger that keeps killing me. So quickly in my head I though that I should equip the sight scope to see his HP then die purposely to get every thing in order for the epic fight. It was at this point that I thought to myself "Is this the way the developer wanted us to play the game?" I under stand in games like Contra and Metal Storm that you have to memorize a level and most likely wont pass the first time, but in RPGs that strategy seems... dirty. What are your thoughts?

Also, please do an episode on IREM. Because, quite frankly, Metal Storm and Ninja Spirit kick ass.

---

Would you ever want another 16 bit console? I think that with programmer's minds today, a console like that would produce many truly awesome games.

----

If you don't plan to address this in your 50th episode, what have been your favorite episodes so far and which ones would you like to do again?

Yeah, I am not gonna check this for grammar...
