That's right kids (and old people), I miss me my arcades. I miss being able to play the hottest new games in the dark, cigarette scented arenas that used to be my full-time hangout. Where did all these wonderful places go? And, why?
Well, we here at the 'Force don't really have the answer to those questions, but it sure won't stop us from talking about them. Tonight's episode, as I'm sure you've guessed, will be about the good old days of arcades along with some of our favorite games from that era.
Is there anything you guys would like to hear us mention tonight?
Ooops, I almost forgot! I'll be making a pretty important (to me anyway) announcement tonight, so make sure to to tune in when the show goes live.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Lately there have been an interesting influx of documentary films about Aracade champions such as the King of Kong and Chasing Ghosts. What do you think this says about the way popular culture is reacting to the great golden era of arcades?
If Chad gets a hug from a dolphin does he never need refueling ever again?
:'( Makes me happy...
I think most arcades died out because new cabinets weren't being bought. Not neccesaily standalone arcades (which I haven't seen since I was six), but all the local movie theaters here in Sacramento are still rockin' oldies like House of the Dead 1, Star Wars Pod-Racer, Area 51, Cruisin' USA and Pac-Man. And that's the best of the best. All I'm sayin' is, two years ago i bought five dollars worth of tokens and I still have four and a half dollars worth.
I think you guys should explain why arcades are/were awesome, and come up with a way to bring them back.
(+20 if you mention konami, +5 for capcom)
AND
which of you actually tried using slugs in the quarter slots?
dyson, is it a boy or a girl? or both?
which trimester are you in?
Used to go there every few days after eating at Fuddruckers to play P.O.W., Simpsons arcade, TMNT, and of course our favourite, Rampage.
Anyone remember the name of that arcade game where you had a gun and had to shoot people inside their apartment windows?
How did that make you feel?
damn you gameworks, but thanks for introducing me to house of the dead 4 and flaming finger.
speaking of the player 1 and 2 positions of a fighter, which side did you pick? i was a child back then and for me it was easier to do moves (mainly hadouken) on the player 1 side.
I remember having a goal of having owning an arcade where I had machine that took memory cards from home console of the same game to play said game arcade style. You can get bonus material from the machine, and use your own creations from created fighters to leveled-up badasses to beat on friends with... enjoy some grup and get the feel of competetion without the void playing online gives you. I heard many Japanese arcades had similar machines, but I guess I never looked too far into it and my dreams are now somewhat different.
Hmmm... I think I had a question in there somewhere... but I've seemed to have lost it. Oh well...
I win.
Sure, you can chat online while playing now, and it opens up a whole group of people to play with that you never would have gotten to. The biggest problem is alot of the time its just some anonymous boner you've been matched up with and the match just goes south from there.
I will say that the anonymous aspect of the internet has ruined alot of multiplayer gaming. Friendly trash talk is one thing, the stuff that passes as acceptable online would have gotten you drug out into an alley IRL and stuffed in the dumpster.
Arcades have died off once, the fighting game genre revived them. To bring them back again, you have to give people an experience that they are willing to leave their homes for.
For me, thats pinball. My weakness
not too many arcades anymore it seems floating around. skeeball is still around but seems dying as well. i loved the hole in the wall arcade with all the imports in Hawaii.. lil hidden treasure but fewer and father in between.
@ ritalin-
im a sucker for pinball machines too. when i see one of those, i get all giggety.
D&B ftmfw though.. arcade + booze + moving seat car games= massive win
What really killed arcades was the fact they started to cost a buck to play the newest game.
