It’s the moment a lot of you have been waiting for! Tonight, RFGO! is recording its Chrono Trigger episode! Yay! Dolphin jubilation!
I know we are just as excited about talking about Square’s Super Nintendo RPG masterpiece as you. In fact, we have all dressed up as characters from the game to celebrate the occasion. I am dressed as Crono; Topher looks absolutely adorable in his Frog suit; Anthony, naturally, is impersonating Magus; and Colette -- well -- Colette is having trouble deciding between Marle, Lucca, or Ayla. Any suggestions?
What about Dyson? Well, sadly, Dyson is still on his grand adventure, but we have an excellent replacement: Back by popular demand is Stella Wong! And wait until you get a load of her Robo costume. Cute doesn’t even begin to describe!
We are all pumped up to talk about one of the best videogames of all time. Help us out by leaving us as many questions and comments as possible. Who’s your favorite character? What’s your favorite sequence? How has Chrono Trigger changed you life? It’s going to be a great show! JOY EXPLOSION!

It's okay though, I have a bunch of back episodes to catch up on.
Anyhoo, am I signing my death sentence by saying that I found Chrono Trigger to be only above average and that I have no intention of completing it until it is released on the DS? Maybe I am just not a fan of console RPGs, but when I gave the Masumematatata or whatever sword to Frog I said "that's enough of that" and turned off my SNES.
When Robo met the other robots I choked up a little, though.
And it bad taste:
There is no tuna nets in sight..
I hope you guys will be able to anwers my question;
Why is Chrono Trigger so great?
As much as I would like to love it, I've tried many times to play it and never understood it's greatness. Chad? Topher?Colette? Stella? Show me the light!
Anyway love the show , I listen to it religiously every week.
Sub question: The ability to communicate with dolphins or the ability to become a dolphin at will (but you couldn't communicate with your fellow dolphins).
Topher: Which is better: Chrono Trigger or eating the excess off the lid of an overfilled slurpee?
Colette: Another Chrono Trigger or another Phantasy Star?
Dyson: (the crew can answer for him since he's not there) Life time supply of Diet Pepsi or Metroid Prime series erased from history?
FUN FACT: My online "handle" back in the mid-90s was Kaeru in reference to my favourite video game character ever, Frog, AND I wrote fanfiction which was SO BAD AND STILL ONLINE SOMEWHERE... AND TURNS 10 YEARS OLD THIS MONTH!
I loved the idea of traveling through time to change things, so actually my favorite part of the game is an optional part of the game. I loved the part when Lucca gets the opportunity to travel back in time and save her mother from losing her ability to walk. I didn't understand the first time playing through, but every time since I make it a point to complete that quest. I feel like the ending isn't complete unless I save her mother.
{Spoilers}
I refuse to acknowledge Chrono Cross as being part of the same universe, as it was an average RPG by itself and a piece of crap in relation to Chrono Trigger, but do you think it's ever possible Squenix could do a sequel right to this game? Does it even warrant it? I think I speak for many when I say the game is near perfection. Would another seuqel sully it like Chrono Cross did?
Or with the Squenix merger could this work?
Or could they sell the rights to Mistwalker and have Sackaguchi play with it (fat chance)?
<3<3<3<3
Long story short we went to my friends house and I got DKC back and he got his CT back, neither of us where happy :(.
Maybe I'll give it another shot when the DS version comes out. I really like the story and setting(s), but I'm terrible at any RPG that doesn't have Pokemon or Mario in the title.
Also, have any of you heard "The Incredible Singing Robot" by Star Salzman? Best CT remix ever.

My question is, what exactly is it that makes Chrono Trigger the best (imo) RPG ever? What did it do that the others, and certainly the ones nowadays, aren't? I don't know the answer, all I know is that no other RPG for me has come close to giving me the experience Chrono Trigger gave me.
Even the DS version does not a release date here. Maybe they think there will only be nostalgia buys, which won't exist in Europe?
I have played about 6 hours of Chrono Trigger, about 3 months ago, by the only means that they have afforded Europe *ahemmm* and I do really like it even though I have no nostalgia for it. The parts where /your/ actions shape future events such as the court scene was excellent and I can't think of many modern games that pull a trick as good as that. I still think that Secret of Mana was more ahead of it's time in many ways but I am still loving Chrono Trigger so far.
why the hatred of the PS1 anime cut scenes? As I remember they were only in the beginning and the end. They never detracted from any of the endings and were cute little vids. Load times were unbearable though.
After Chrono Cross do you think its possible to make a Chrono Trigger 2?
I honestly know I beaten this game more than 200 time on t he snes and countless times on emulation. Its my favorite game of all time. Can't wait for the DS version.
Now that I have that out of the way, I imagine you will cover alot of the story in your regular discussion, so I'll ask this question: Has there ever been a game that has made you fool around at the beginning of the game out of your own volition (aka, not cutscenes or legitimate story elements) before the first proper enemy battle than Crono Trigger in the millenial fair? I can't even begin to tell you how long I screwed around with beer drinking (makes my hand hurt tapping button!) beating up Gato, guessing outcomes of races, and doing all the Norstein Beckler stuff just so Crono had a couple more pixels that represented dolls in his room. Thanks Retroforce, you guys are great!
I have a quick question, with Square being Square would you like to see them make more games based in the Chrono World or would you rather they just leave it as it is, unlike what they have done to the Mana series, where they made lots of spin offs and so on, but seem to have diluted the good name that series once had. Or do you trust Square enough to make sequals that will keep the good name going.
Also anyone played Radical Dreamers the sequel that only came out in Japan for the Satellaview?
ANd come vback soon Dyson, I miss your crazy wild stories.
I'm not saying it's a bad game by any means, but people talk about it like it's the one snes/ds game to rule them all. What makes it stand out in people's minds so much?
I loved the court part in Chrono Trigger where everything you did in the first part effected the outcome. What are some other parts like that in a videogame where when you were playing you were just like "I can't believe this is happening"?
Also on the topic of the DS remake would you rather see a Chrono Trigger remake or another attempt at a sequel?
And am I the only one that feels there should have been a unique ending if you went to the 12,000 B.C. and defeated Lavos there there through the Black Omen? Personally, I always found it fun to have Magus face off against his mother and felt that the course of the world would be drastically changed by defeating Lavos then. Maybe I am just thinking too much.
dtoid karaoke is easily the greatest idea ever...especially when there's smoke machines.
MOAR DOLPHINS
First off, a C.T. related Haiku.
---
The beautiful Flea,
A secret easily found,
"She", is not a she.
---
Now onto the questions, these are for all of you. (SPOILERS AHEAD)
Do any of you feel that there is one "True" ending to the game, or do you believe that each ending can stand on its own as a plausible finale and not just a "What if?" scenario?
And for an individual question to Stella: Terranigma or Chrono Trigger, which is better?
---
@Tazar and Suff0cat
It's the greatest idea ever. But in regards to the smoke machine, it's good...Unless you're sitting right next to the smoke machine and get a nice whiff of it every time it pours out. I.E. me :(
I know I'm a bad person. I'm sorry Retro-Gods, I have disgraced you and everything you stand for. *throws self off cliff into giant heap of broken NES cartridges*
Really Dyson, we need a new Metroidvania episode. Just so we can talk about Metroid SR388 and hear anger about how Metroid Dread most likely won't ever see the light of day.
What's that? Chrono Trigger you say? Oh shit, I just creamed myself again.
Okay, first of all, I know everyone loves Frog, he's hands down awesome, so who is your favourite character other than Frog, or if Frog is NOT your favourite character (blasphemer!) who is?
Secondly, what is your favourite time period, and why?
Thirdly, what are your opinions on Chrono Cross?
Also, myself and a friends were discussing this once, and he believed that Chrono Trigger wasn't silly enough to be truly fun, but wasn't serious enough for a serious tale. He does prefer FFVI, however he doesn't hate Chrono Trigger, he just doesn't think it's as good. Can you guys comment on this?
Also, anime cut-scenes, yay or nay?
How much do you bet the DS version will be priced for?
What do you hope for the rumoured multiplayer features?
How much did you hate the load times on the PS1 version?
And finally for Chad and Topher: Who is cuter, Marle, Lucca or Ayla?
What do you feel about games with multiple endings? Are they an attempt from the publisher to give us more replay value, a lack of definition of a concrete storyline or just a way to please as much fans of the games as they can?
Personally, I think that multiple endings should be used in games where you make moral choices, like Bioshock, Fallout, Fable, where "you build your own story", but also I feel that the ability to create a story with just one ending is more complex because you have to convice different people that is was worthy.
Are multiple endings a reward to the player or just something to collect?
Topher, Chad and Colette, you should all ignore the XBLA, Virtual Console and WiiWare games and review import DS releases, just to give this week the best ratings ever based upon the release of Rhythm Tengoku Gold.
Square hasn't made a better RPG since.
You guys realize that the amount I love you has just tripled thanks to this week's topic.
How did you guys first hear about Chrono Trigger?
I saw an ad for Secret of Evermore and Chrono Trigger in some magazine, saying they just came out. I think I rented Secret of Evermore first (awesome game), but I rented Chrono Trigger the next week, and I looked at RPGs differently since.
Also, Chrono Cross kicks ass, just because it isn't "Chrono Trigger 2" doesn't make it a shitty sequel. It wasn't exactly what everyone expected, but it still is a fantastic game. It bothers me that many people that hate it haven't even given it a chance.
Speaking of sequels, did any of you play Radical Dreamers, the text RPG sequel?
THIS GAME IS STILL RELEVANT! ALL RPGS ARE TRYING TO LIVE UP TO THE MASTERPIECE THAT IS "CHRONO TRIGGER".
I only have two question this week:
To all:
How many endings did you manage to get without referring to the internet/a strategy guide/something that told you "here's how to get ending 'x'"?
Also to all:
I always thought that Chrono was a really deep character even though he happens to be a mute protagonist. I felt this way even though my first playthough of the game was with the PS1 re-release. Do you feel that Chrono was any deeper than other lead characters at the time the game came out(or up to today even)?
I know you posted a memory card about the scene where Crono sacrifices himself to Lavos is probably one of your most memorable moments in gaming. My question is what do you think is more memorable though, the scene where Crono sacrifices himself, or the Crono revival scene where Marle is hugging Crono under the tree while the camera fades away? Is the beginning of that particular story arc more memorable or the ending more memorable? For me, the revival scene is the most memorable scene in the game, and I almost choke up every time I see it. I can still recall the eerie stillness of the scene, and the beautiful backdrop. Anytime I hear the words "Chrono Trigger" the image of Marle hugging Crono is the first image that pops into my head.
-Mike
I say this as a bitter Australian who never even got to play the game on the SNES because Square are fuckwits who wouldn't release the game in PAL territories. Maybe it's because I didn't play it when it was new, maybe it was because people kept hyping it up as the second coming of jeebuz, maybe it's because it just bores me to tears with its retarded time travel plot, but whatever it is, a classic should still be great years later, no matter when you first played it. And I don't think Chrono is the pinnacle of the genre.
You can hate me now for not conforming to your ideals, but really, what sort of fanboy do you have to be for disliking someone because they think your favourite game of all time doesn't live up to the hype?
I can't be the only one who thinks this.
Should Reverend Anthony be hung for not even finishing the game once?
Do you think that saving Crono is considered to be the "proper" ending (as if a game like this could actually have a proper ending), or did Square expect you to assume that there was no way to save him and thus forge on, creating the most unbelievable narrative for a video game of all time, one in which the silent hero fails to finish his quest.
I still remember the first time I played this game and how I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut when you travel to 2300 AD and the world was in ruin.
My greatest memory of this game, however, is when you reach the "Golden Age" in 12,000 BC. I will never forget the giddiness I felt as I ran through the most beautiful city I had ever seen in my entire life: a city of magic, wonder and peace. I should have known it was all going to fall apart, but I truly had hoped that the city would survive and be floating above all the time periods we had visited, out of sight to the rest.
I can't wait for that feeling to return on the DS.
Listen, I love Chrono Trigger as much as the next guy (Charm Hat never leaves Ayla, Antipode 3 rapes your mother's face, etc etc), but aren't you people pissed in the slightest bit at all the wasted potential here? Instead of working on a fresh, new Chrono title; we're just thrown a bone by a re-release on the DS.
I dunno, maybe I'm too bitter. Maybe I should think more positively and think that it's to regenerate interest in the series again, but I feel like this is another hollow re-release...
Awesome fail or Epic loss?
Of course, I'll take both Marle and Lucca when you're not looking.
How do you feel about the translation changes (or lack thereof) in the upcoming port? From what I hear, you're still doing thing desecrating Toma's grave with soda instead of urine. As much as I like the original, it would be nice to see some improvements in the translation.
Also, Mitsuda > Uematsu. OCRemix's Chrono Symphonic is pretty far up there as well.
