You've no doubt heard the (possibly) awesome news that some great retro favorites are about to be exhumed and made over for a new generation. We scream, you scream, we all scream for Splatterhouse, right? What's with this all of a sudden? It seems every few weeks it's announced that another classic is getting new tires and a fresh coat of paint, so we thought we'd take a closer look.

We'll be discussing this recent upsurge in retro remakes -- where it might come from, why it's happening, and what we think about the whole deal. It also just so happens that we've played a few of these upcoming remakes for ourselves, so we'll tell you all about that while we're at it. Hit the comments with your questions for the show!

How awesome dose the Sonic 2 HD fangame look?

I have a second question for Chad and Collete, who is your favorite Phoenix Wright character (Daryan Crescend) and why? This is relevant because the Phoenix Wright are remakes of a Japnesse GBA series.

Okay, so there are a lot of retro remakes in the works. Does this mean the video game industry has devolved into Hollywood and just picking up old ideas and trying to breathe new life into them?

I mean, it worked amazingly well for Kojima when he brought Metal Gear back. Speaking of Metal Gear, what are your theories about the Metal Gear Solid: Revived video that was up on Gametrailers? Is Kojima pulling our leg, or is he up to something nefarious. Could my fears that he's going to pull a "Dallis" on us all and make it all just a dream of Solid Snake possibly be true?

Oh well, now for the new trend. I am sure Topher will recognize this character.

Also, I meant Dallas, but it is hard to type while being attacked by a puppy that missed you.

Do you think the recent surge in remakes of classic games is because the people who were playing these games when they first came out are now old enough to be in charge of, or at least have input in, the development of new titles? In the same way that music and clothing seem to go in cycles, are we seeing the first of potentially many cycles in game remakes/reimaginings?

I already asked a related question fifteen podcasts ago (there, I asked about “HD 2D updates” of retro games, and I won the $25 prize). But here’s a question for this podcast:

Would you rather have a sequel to a classic retro game, or a remake?

Also, Topher, here’s your belated birthday present. It simultaneously satisfies your love of toys and cute puppies!

With the news of a new Earthworm Jim game being released, do you think it will stick to its 2D roots, or try again with 3D? Also depending on what they choose what consoles do you think it will be on?

Sonic Unleashed? At least they're trying ya know.

TMNT arcade game for the 360: Awesome or Super Awesome?

Multiple fan versions of Metroid 2: Super Awesome or Super Orgasmic?

Also, where the fuck is Metroid Dread? I'm really irked about that.

Remake of Metal Gear 1+2 plz.

Remake of retro Chad being evil: Will it happen?

Any retro game/series you don't want to come back? Not because it was horrible, like Bible Adventures, but because it should always stay in its original form.

Why do you think Nintendo has been so hesitant with the remakes lately? They remade Super Mario Brothers in the 16-bit days, but aside from ports, I can't think of a single other game they've done. Who wouldn't want to Super Metroid or Link to the Past redone (2.5D plz not 3D bullshit).

They don't need to be like Square Enix or anything, but a remake or two would be nice.
Cataract's Avatar
Are you worried that with a large number of retro revivals coming up, that most of them are going to be complete crap, only being made to milk a franchise? As much as I love Earthworm Jim, I'm scared (Yes, scared, not worried) that the new game is going to be a pile of shit.

Also, since it's technically a revival: the stage 3 boss in Ikaruga's a dick. Fuck that guy.
droobies's Avatar
Do you all think the advent of XBLA, PSN, WVC, and the upcoming Wiiware has anything to do with the upsurge in retro-related game production? Are we just seeing a cyclical trend in the tastes of the gaming populace, or are we just getting older and longing for the games of our past?

What game franchise would you most want to see revived: Eco, Crazy Taxi, a new Gunstar Heroes, Panzer Dragoon, Kid Icarus, or maybe even Bubsy?! (If another game comes out with Bubsy in it I will kill myself)

How do you guys feel about games that are almost exact copies of what they were 10 years ago but they now add online multiplayer and put them on x-box live.
Would you rather have proper sequels or do you you prefer being able to play games from your childhood against random starngers.

Do you guys feel that the fundamental game play mechanics of a revived game should be left as they are or is it more "fresh" if they take a whole new approach? Basically do you agree with the adage of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". What old series would you like to see make a comeback?
The GHost's Avatar
You know, I was listening to the old SNES episode of Retroforce, and in it I believe it's Dyson that says something along the lines of "oh my God! There's over 60 comments! I don't know if we can get to all of these..." Now it's like what, an average of 90-100 comments? Go Retroforce Go! :D

Des questions pour vous:

1) Do you think that an update of a game like Splatterhouse, where it looks like it's being totally changed to reflect todays vidjagame sensibilities is a good idea, or do you think that it would be a better idea to just make a totally new game, rather than riding on the name of the old game while having little to nothing to do with it?

2)The obvious question: most desired remake/update?

3) Do you think that they'll be remaking games like Halo in the future? Or do you think that the current generation just doesn't have the same ability to be updated like older games do?

4)HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOPHER!? (There's a question mark, therefore it is a question! :D )

5) Since some form of Earthbound seems to be coming to the Wii, which form would you prefer it in? Straight port of Earthbound to the VC? Updated version with shiny new graphics? A whole new game for Wiiware?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go finish the last dungeon in Lunar, a game that I would kill for an HD-2D remake/update of :D

dearest retroforce lovers

revivals are awesome, just most of the time its a 2D game to 3D game. i just hate how evolution of retro games seems to be retroactive since retrogoggles will only sell a few copys. revivals don't always need to be too far from the original to be good. I don't need fancy new graphics to make me feel happy or excited about a old series cause Contra 4 was amazing, and so is the new Space Invaders.

question, what games do you feel they should leave alone, just for the fear that that you already know will be full of fail?

Retro Revivals.
Either they're doing it wrong,
Which is complete Fail,
Or they are bonafied win
And become the man now dog.

Just two things, what are your thoughts on the new art direction in Street Fighter 4, and WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE REV AS A PERMANENT CAST MEMBER. He has brought so many laughs to the show so I think he deserves a spot.

Do you think that wiiware could bring about revivals of some classic nintendo franchises, or bring in more retro style games, ex: new 2d metroid? Also since it is coming up soon will Chad be reviewing wiiware games? His and Topher's reviews are actually my favorite part of RFGO!.

I have played a few games that where revivals of older games and thought they were incredible, even though I have not played the originals. Prince of Persia, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden. Hell, I never played Metroid until Fusion came out, after I played that I bought pretty much every other game in the series (first time I used Ebay was for Super Metroid) and it shot up to my number one favorite series.

So was do you think of revival games attracting new fans such as myself to a franchise?

Either one would have updated graphics, new stories, new dungeons/new map, different weapons, new bosses, etc..
But they would play the same
ajay42's Avatar
The whole revivals thing is a bit unsettling sometimes. From a 'retro' point of view (im positing the existence of such a thing) i think it would be far more amazing to see some people sit down and create a completely new 2d RPG or a completely new 2d platformer (these have been trickling out lately actually) rather than another rehash. the video games industry has hit its nostalgia phase WAAAAAAY too fast. You don't mine the old-school just be reissuing and rehashing the same shit, you mine it by grasping its sensibilities and why those were so appealing in the first place.

So i guess in summary remake < sequel/revival < new IP with retro sensibilities.
ajay42's Avatar
then again, though, id kill for a fully fleshed out 3d earthbound sequel... :) oh hypocrisy, you're so delicious.
Samit Sarkar's Avatar
@Elitechief27: Awesome tanka, dude! But here’s a protip: “bonafied” is actually two words, and it’s spelled “bona fide”. It comes from Latin, meaning, literally, “in good faith” — though that’s not how it’s used most of the time nowadays; people usually mean “genuine” when they use it (like you did in your tanka!).
ajay42's Avatar
^^^ more commentary: and i DONT consider loving-retro (hey im posting here) as the kind of nostalgia I'm talking about. I mean just this idea that these limited sets of characters, titles, etc. are whats important (and missing what made those characters, titles, genres compelling in the first place.)

Has the success of VC, xbox originals and whatever playstation calls its PSone downloads brought about a new period of retrofocus?? In other words do you think these companies were always planning these sequels, but waiting on the right tech, or do you think they've realised that people will download these older games so they can probably pull in full price on a re-imagining of an old IP??

Also, do you think for your episodes where you talk about specific games, you could announce a few weeks early so we could have a look/relook at the game first?? Or do you think that would generate too much discussion from question askers and the worlds longest podcast ever ever??

So, Retro games are being remade for the current generation of consoles; Do you think this is because it resurrects a good series or is it a cunning marketing ploy to get additional Virtual Console sales of the original titles? (and subsequent remake when it is released)

First time commenter, long time listener. In love with Chad Concelmo.

Do you think the reason that remakes are becoming more of a trend is because of the downloadable content on the systems that was never before avaliable? And if so do you think this will be a tool to create more hype for the younger crowd that doesnt know what these games actually are?

Which remake has done 2D to 3D the best?? And do you think that this takes away from the game or makes it better?

PS. What do you guys think about all this Earthbound coming to the Wii. Truth or is Nintendo just screwing with us....again.

I hope you are going to talk about Dracula X Chronicles, a great remake of one of the best Castlevania games that was never released on America until now; Rondo of Blood.

Anyway, as for my question: Since many thinks that porting games from other generations to the actual is a good idea, do you think that the developers/companies do this because to please the fans or to get people who never played them before to do it?

Two things in particular on my remake radar for you guys, and one huge setup, FrankenQuestion:

Played that River City Ransom GBA update yet?! Would make a nice discussion point for the show, because, imo, its a great example of a game that updates a game but doesn't wreck the charm of the original.

Super Dodgeball's getting the update treatment release on DS later this month. I think you guys recently mentioned it,but, yeah. I'm stoked. WAY STOKED.

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and put a crazy statement out there: River City Ransom did alot of things, in spirit, which GTA has gone forth to implement in its modern, 3D versions (food affecting your character, learning different fighting moves, going around and back tracking as you want, etc). So, would it be worth someone going balls out and reviving the beat'em up in 3D, using a mash up of GTA's living world (with lowered emphasis on driving and instead having them walk or subway) and RCR's commerce based, random stat upgrading system?

Do you think it would be better if developers remade games that weren't great but had potential? Rather than possibly spending a lot of money on ruining a loved franchise, they could take another shot at something 'new' that could become a hit for less money?
Dead Movie Star's Avatar
You will probably cover this, but do you like to see games like Splatterhouse turned into 3d God of War clones, or do you prefer them staying the same like Contra? When I heard Splatterhouse was going to get a sequal I was excited, but then I saw the screenshot...

Also, top 10 Dreamcast games not including Rival Schools or Ikaruga, GO! I am asking this because my awesome neighbor has a Dreamcast and I am not going on a download spree then not burning discs.

Space Invaders Extreme is it. The new structure is much more shmuppy than the original. I'm digging the bright colors ad big ass bosses. And it's 2D, which is total win.

I'm not very excited about any of the 3D remakes. Bionic Commando looks too generic; Splatterhouse doesn't appeal to me and Street Fighter seems uninspired. My opinions may change, we'll see.

When new great games are made of an old good franchise, everything's cool.

But when new bad games are made of an old good franchise, people immediately go "the franchise is ruined" and/or "let it die".

Coming from the mentality that if the new game sucks, it's just a sucky game that I don't have to care about and can just forget - could anyone explain or atleast guess why people do this?

No shitty new Sonic game ever made a dent on what "Sonic" is to me. Why do people stop hoping for a new good Sonic game and even start hating Sonic as a whole (seemingly overriding the good old memories aswell)? Why not ignore the crap, don't buy it, be disappointed at that one game for what it is, and look forward to a better one? Just an example.

There are a squillion Final Fantasy remakes. 2d -- okay but never perfect -- sound problems or low difficulty. 3d -- why bother?

Ever played the Dragon Quest remakes on Super Famicom or Gameboy Color? Those were good. Ever *seen* the Playstation/DS remake of Dragon Quest 4? It looks like someone threw up all over the screen. There is a chance that DQ4 will be officially translated (it is on the ESRB site, so it must be true), but I think people will hate the graphics.

Also, a question:

Which series not getting upcoming revivals need them and why? There are plenty of gems just sitting there, buried, that would make killer titles on this current generation of consoles. ActRaiser, Goemon (on consoles... DS got a version that was Japan only) and Super Baseball 2020 stand out as three titles that would be awesome to see redone for the 360, Wii and/or PS3.

Which games are more deserving of a retro revival: Flawed games which had an awesome concept or aspect to them but weren't served best by the presentation, the native system etc. or awesome games that'd be even more so when updated. And is it better to update a well-known, beloved game or an under-appreciated game in hopes of garnering an audience for the new game?

Essentially, Phantasy Star III or Phantasy Star II/ Ecco the Dolphin or Act Raiser?

I have a few questions, once again. (And for clarification, I'm a guy.)

1) There are many different remakes of games coming out recently, and even though they've been remade with (usually) superior technology than what the original game was made with, and yet they will often get a ratings and such from those that have played the original game, and then the remake. Why do you think this is? (If that didn't make sense, I'll put it this way: "Why do you all think that remakes of older games, usually made with better technology, sometimes be of lesser quality than the original?)

2) Just what are your favorite remakes? (I assume our resident Shmup-King will say Ikaruga, if that was a true remake.)

3) There are likely to be times where games that few liked will be remade, while those games that SHOULD be remade, will be ignored. What are all of your choices on games that should, and shouldn't be remade?

4) In Sonic Adventure 2 (May have been GC version exclusive, but I'm not sure.), there's a remade version of the Green Hill Zone from the first game, and many people enjoyed it, I assume. What do you all think of later games in a franchise redoing things from older games in the series? Should this be done more?
welkstar's Avatar
@AILDFan-

I would love revivals of those games! While we're at it, why not revive the whole Phantasy Star series with a solid JRPG Phantasy Star V? :)

Knives's Avatar
How old do you think a game has to for it to be ok to be remade?
Qalamari's Avatar
@ Aborto:

Splatterhouse is already available on the Virtual Console. I'd say it's pretty likely that the original game would be rejiggered somehow to tie in with the upcoming remake- maybe as bonus content, like the original Metroid was included in Metroid Prime. (Sort of).

Now to my question. In the Smash Bros. Dojo page that explains All-Star mode, Sakurai mentions the six-year gap before and after Pikmin, and concludes by saying "it does seem that coming up with a completely new character-driven series has gotten more difficult recently." Do you think the tendency to do remakes rather than creating original intellectual properties is hurting gaming?

Megaman64 isn't a revival or anything, it's just a port of the (superior) Megaman Legends for PS1.

i think i'm in too late but;

i think the reason publishers are becoming more open to "retro revivals" is because of the broader "retro-revival" as part of mainstream culture. lots of trendy places (at least here in australia) selling shirts with streetfighter/mario/sonic/etc stuff on them.

do you guys have any thoughts on why so many franchises are being brought back (often in ways that pay tribute to the games they're relaunching)?

also: what i said above (kind of) makes the retro=trendy thing a bit more okay with me and a bit less cheapening of my childhood. are there any retro characters you'd like to see included in the retro-fashion revival?

(and on-topic musical question for Chad: retro-movie hairspray recently got remade as a succesful musical, as did the producers. what's movie from the past would you like to see brought updated in musical form?)

1) Bionic Commando (yes, yes, I know, it's coming to XBLA but I want it on WiiWare and I want it NOW)
2) Wizards & Warriors
3) Blaster Master
4) Clash at Demonhead (if you haven't played this game, OMG, not-download it now!)
5) Any 2-D brawler: I will accept Double Dragon, Final Fight, TMNT, X-Men, or even The Simpsons, just make it happen, dammit!

Okay that's it. And yes, they're mostly NES games, because the NES is still the most influential system in my life, and that's even after playing Chrono Trigger on the SNES, because I would never have done that if not for my NES.

Oh, crud, animateria reminded me that I forgot about actual good "of Mana" games Okay, Secret of Mana can fight for 5th place. I would so very much like to play that game again with a partner this time.

Please talk about Capcom's canceled Gamecube game Dead Phoenix and how it totally could have been a revival of the Kid Icarus franchise. (And Smash Bros. doesn't count for reviving franchises, because seriously, what's been done with Ice Climbers or Game and Watch?)

@ RJG: Yes! Vanillaware should handle any and all 2D remakes. I said awhile back that that we need more 2D new and remakes, ideally done by them. Glad to see support for that team.

I'd like to play a sweet Mega Man 2 or Ninja Gaiden 2 remake, personally.

Speaking of which, whatever became of that ninja in dev. by Vanillaware for the Wii? I Haven't heard anything about that in awhile

I always thought Dead Phoenix looked like Legendary Wings. Would be sweet if there was a new Kid Icarus like that, though.

I just realized: if Dead Phoenix was intended as a franchise revival, it lived up to it's name if nothing else.

I can't wait for the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV. That's one of my favorite SNES games and since it's a menu based game the change in graphics doesn't hurt the gameplay and I think (at least hope) it will improve the story sequences and such.

I don't know if it counts as a game remake necessarily, but I'd love to see a Mario Paint on the Wii. It would be so much fun to make pictures, animations, music, etc. and share them with friends. And I'm sure they could come up with great mini-games for a Wii version like the bug swat in the original.
