You've no doubt heard the (possibly) awesome news that some great retro favorites are about to be exhumed and made over for a new generation. We scream, you scream, we all scream for Splatterhouse, right? What's with this all of a sudden? It seems every few weeks it's announced that another classic is getting new tires and a fresh coat of paint, so we thought we'd take a closer look.
We'll be discussing this recent upsurge in retro remakes -- where it might come from, why it's happening, and what we think about the whole deal. It also just so happens that we've played a few of these upcoming remakes for ourselves, so we'll tell you all about that while we're at it. Hit the comments with your questions for the show!

I have a second question for Chad and Collete, who is your favorite Phoenix Wright character (Daryan Crescend) and why? This is relevant because the Phoenix Wright are remakes of a Japnesse GBA series.
05/04/2008 15:40
I mean, it worked amazingly well for Kojima when he brought Metal Gear back. Speaking of Metal Gear, what are your theories about the Metal Gear Solid: Revived video that was up on Gametrailers? Is Kojima pulling our leg, or is he up to something nefarious. Could my fears that he's going to pull a "Dallis" on us all and make it all just a dream of Solid Snake possibly be true?
Oh well, now for the new trend. I am sure Topher will recognize this character.

Would you rather have a sequel to a classic retro game, or a remake?
Also, Topher, here’s your belated birthday present. It simultaneously satisfies your love of toys and cute puppies!

TMNT arcade game for the 360: Awesome or Super Awesome?
Multiple fan versions of Metroid 2: Super Awesome or Super Orgasmic?
Also, where the fuck is Metroid Dread? I'm really irked about that.
Remake of Metal Gear 1+2 plz.
Remake of retro Chad being evil: Will it happen?
05/04/2008 15:45
What retro game/series do each of y'all wish could be revived?
Any retro game/series you don't want to come back? Not because it was horrible, like Bible Adventures, but because it should always stay in its original form.

05/04/2008 15:47
05/04/2008 15:48
They don't need to be like Square Enix or anything, but a remake or two would be nice.
05/04/2008 15:48
Also, since it's technically a revival: the stage 3 boss in Ikaruga's a dick. Fuck that guy.
05/04/2008 15:48
05/04/2008 15:49

Des questions pour vous:
1) Do you think that an update of a game like Splatterhouse, where it looks like it's being totally changed to reflect todays vidjagame sensibilities is a good idea, or do you think that it would be a better idea to just make a totally new game, rather than riding on the name of the old game while having little to nothing to do with it?
2)The obvious question: most desired remake/update?
3) Do you think that they'll be remaking games like Halo in the future? Or do you think that the current generation just doesn't have the same ability to be updated like older games do?
4)HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOPHER!? (There's a question mark, therefore it is a question! :D )
5) Since some form of Earthbound seems to be coming to the Wii, which form would you prefer it in? Straight port of Earthbound to the VC? Updated version with shiny new graphics? A whole new game for Wiiware?
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go finish the last dungeon in Lunar, a game that I would kill for an HD-2D remake/update of :D
05/04/2008 16:03
revivals are awesome, just most of the time its a 2D game to 3D game. i just hate how evolution of retro games seems to be retroactive since retrogoggles will only sell a few copys. revivals don't always need to be too far from the original to be good. I don't need fancy new graphics to make me feel happy or excited about a old series cause Contra 4 was amazing, and so is the new Space Invaders.
question, what games do you feel they should leave alone, just for the fear that that you already know will be full of fail?
and TOPHER!!!!
i want you to speak of the epicness of Space Invaders Extreme
05/04/2008 16:07
dont say Bubsy, thats too obvious.
05/04/2008 16:08
05/04/2008 16:09
Retro Revivals.
Either they're doing it wrong,
Which is complete Fail,
Or they are bonafied win
And become the man now dog.
Just two things, what are your thoughts on the new art direction in Street Fighter 4, and WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE REV AS A PERMANENT CAST MEMBER. He has brought so many laughs to the show so I think he deserves a spot.
05/04/2008 16:09
05/04/2008 16:11
So was do you think of revival games attracting new fans such as myself to a franchise?
05/04/2008 16:16
05/04/2008 16:19
Either one would have updated graphics, new stories, new dungeons/new map, different weapons, new bosses, etc..
But they would play the same
05/04/2008 16:21
So i guess in summary remake < sequel/revival < new IP with retro sensibilities.
05/04/2008 16:22
05/04/2008 16:24
05/04/2008 16:27
05/04/2008 16:29
05/04/2008 16:33
05/04/2008 16:34
05/04/2008 16:35
Also, do you think for your episodes where you talk about specific games, you could announce a few weeks early so we could have a look/relook at the game first?? Or do you think that would generate too much discussion from question askers and the worlds longest podcast ever ever??
05/04/2008 16:35
Also, Banana Dolphin.
05/04/2008 16:43
05/04/2008 16:49
Do you think the reason that remakes are becoming more of a trend is because of the downloadable content on the systems that was never before avaliable? And if so do you think this will be a tool to create more hype for the younger crowd that doesnt know what these games actually are?
Which remake has done 2D to 3D the best?? And do you think that this takes away from the game or makes it better?
PS. What do you guys think about all this Earthbound coming to the Wii. Truth or is Nintendo just screwing with us....again.
05/04/2008 16:55
05/04/2008 16:57
It sends shivers down my spine.
What do you guys think? Is this a hint that the game will be 3D?
I mean, with the current technology, I would love to see Doug TenNapel's creations hand drawn in high resolution.
Oh my... FAP FAP FAP!
05/04/2008 17:02
As for my question, do you feel like some remakes/revivals are unnecessary? I ask this because it feels like everyone is cashing in on the whole nostalgia thing. I listen to Retroforce all the time, so I like me sum nostalgia, but I can't help be feel like I'm being taken advantage of a little. What are some remakes that you'd rather see come out?
05/04/2008 17:07
05/04/2008 17:10
05/04/2008 17:10
Anyway, as for my question: Since many thinks that porting games from other generations to the actual is a good idea, do you think that the developers/companies do this because to please the fans or to get people who never played them before to do it?
05/04/2008 17:16
05/04/2008 17:19
Played that River City Ransom GBA update yet?! Would make a nice discussion point for the show, because, imo, its a great example of a game that updates a game but doesn't wreck the charm of the original.
Super Dodgeball's getting the update treatment release on DS later this month. I think you guys recently mentioned it,but, yeah. I'm stoked. WAY STOKED.
Also, I'm gonna go ahead and put a crazy statement out there: River City Ransom did alot of things, in spirit, which GTA has gone forth to implement in its modern, 3D versions (food affecting your character, learning different fighting moves, going around and back tracking as you want, etc). So, would it be worth someone going balls out and reviving the beat'em up in 3D, using a mash up of GTA's living world (with lowered emphasis on driving and instead having them walk or subway) and RCR's commerce based, random stat upgrading system?
05/04/2008 17:24
How incredibly excited are you all for the upcoming sequel to some of the best Nintendo 64 games ever, the Banjo series?
05/04/2008 17:24
05/04/2008 17:27
05/04/2008 17:31
Also, top 10 Dreamcast games not including Rival Schools or Ikaruga, GO! I am asking this because my awesome neighbor has a Dreamcast and I am not going on a download spree then not burning discs.
I love the Dreamcast controller for Street Fighter :)
05/04/2008 17:33
I'm not very excited about any of the 3D remakes. Bionic Commando looks too generic; Splatterhouse doesn't appeal to me and Street Fighter seems uninspired. My opinions may change, we'll see.
05/04/2008 17:33
And for bonus points:
05/04/2008 17:35
05/04/2008 17:45
05/04/2008 17:47
05/04/2008 17:47
But when new bad games are made of an old good franchise, people immediately go "the franchise is ruined" and/or "let it die".
Coming from the mentality that if the new game sucks, it's just a sucky game that I don't have to care about and can just forget - could anyone explain or atleast guess why people do this?
No shitty new Sonic game ever made a dent on what "Sonic" is to me. Why do people stop hoping for a new good Sonic game and even start hating Sonic as a whole (seemingly overriding the good old memories aswell)? Why not ignore the crap, don't buy it, be disappointed at that one game for what it is, and look forward to a better one? Just an example.
05/04/2008 17:47
05/04/2008 17:55
Ever played the Dragon Quest remakes on Super Famicom or Gameboy Color? Those were good. Ever *seen* the Playstation/DS remake of Dragon Quest 4? It looks like someone threw up all over the screen. There is a chance that DQ4 will be officially translated (it is on the ESRB site, so it must be true), but I think people will hate the graphics.
05/04/2008 18:05
Regarding Splatterhouse: which way would you guys like to see it go: brutal horror/adventure like Silent Hill, or wacky madcamp Troma camp?
Also: as soon as I think of a kenning for "dolphin scale", I will whip you guys up a Scandinavian saga; I saw "Beowulf" last week and it put me in a gloomy Northern mood.
05/04/2008 18:13
This date should be declared World's official Shmup day.
And bee-dogs for you
05/04/2008 18:13
Be creative!
05/04/2008 18:21
05/04/2008 18:35
Also do you think that there are so many remakes because developers have a permanent case of retrogoggles, are greedy, or have run out of ideas?
05/04/2008 18:40
05/04/2008 18:40
lol
05/04/2008 18:49
Also, a question:
Which series not getting upcoming revivals need them and why? There are plenty of gems just sitting there, buried, that would make killer titles on this current generation of consoles. ActRaiser, Goemon (on consoles... DS got a version that was Japan only) and Super Baseball 2020 stand out as three titles that would be awesome to see redone for the 360, Wii and/or PS3.
05/04/2008 18:49
Essentially, Phantasy Star III or Phantasy Star II/ Ecco the Dolphin or Act Raiser?
05/04/2008 18:54
Also, do you think they will release updated versions of the originals on XBL or PSN? I ask because I really want to play the original Splatterhouse because I missed out on it.
05/04/2008 19:11
05/04/2008 19:14
The funny thing is Topher was probably as unenthusiastic on his birthday as he always is.
05/04/2008 19:17
1) There are many different remakes of games coming out recently, and even though they've been remade with (usually) superior technology than what the original game was made with, and yet they will often get a ratings and such from those that have played the original game, and then the remake. Why do you think this is? (If that didn't make sense, I'll put it this way: "Why do you all think that remakes of older games, usually made with better technology, sometimes be of lesser quality than the original?)
2) Just what are your favorite remakes? (I assume our resident Shmup-King will say Ikaruga, if that was a true remake.)
3) There are likely to be times where games that few liked will be remade, while those games that SHOULD be remade, will be ignored. What are all of your choices on games that should, and shouldn't be remade?
4) In Sonic Adventure 2 (May have been GC version exclusive, but I'm not sure.), there's a remade version of the Green Hill Zone from the first game, and many people enjoyed it, I assume. What do you all think of later games in a franchise redoing things from older games in the series? Should this be done more?
05/04/2008 19:19
I would love revivals of those games! While we're at it, why not revive the whole Phantasy Star series with a solid JRPG Phantasy Star V? :)
05/04/2008 19:22
05/04/2008 19:37
05/04/2008 19:38
Splatterhouse is already available on the Virtual Console. I'd say it's pretty likely that the original game would be rejiggered somehow to tie in with the upcoming remake- maybe as bonus content, like the original Metroid was included in Metroid Prime. (Sort of).
Now to my question. In the Smash Bros. Dojo page that explains All-Star mode, Sakurai mentions the six-year gap before and after Pikmin, and concludes by saying "it does seem that coming up with a completely new character-driven series has gotten more difficult recently." Do you think the tendency to do remakes rather than creating original intellectual properties is hurting gaming?
05/04/2008 19:43
Megaman64 isn't a revival or anything, it's just a port of the (superior) Megaman Legends for PS1.
05/04/2008 19:43
What do you think?
Would you play this awesome game then, Mr. Dyson?
05/04/2008 19:46
i think the reason publishers are becoming more open to "retro revivals" is because of the broader "retro-revival" as part of mainstream culture. lots of trendy places (at least here in australia) selling shirts with streetfighter/mario/sonic/etc stuff on them.
do you guys have any thoughts on why so many franchises are being brought back (often in ways that pay tribute to the games they're relaunching)?
also: what i said above (kind of) makes the retro=trendy thing a bit more okay with me and a bit less cheapening of my childhood. are there any retro characters you'd like to see included in the retro-fashion revival?
(and on-topic musical question for Chad: retro-movie hairspray recently got remade as a succesful musical, as did the producers. what's movie from the past would you like to see brought updated in musical form?)

According to Kotaku on their coverage of some Dengeki poll,
the most wanted remakes in Japan are...
1. Final Fantasty VII
2. Xenogears
3. Seiken Densetsu 3
4. Romancing Saga 3
5. Tactics Ogre
Interesting list.
Where is my Seiken Densetsu 3 for the DS, Square Enix?
I swear I just need a direct port of SD3 on the DS and I'll buy it for whatever price!
Also... Alien Invaders Extreme!
05/04/2008 20:54
1) Bionic Commando (yes, yes, I know, it's coming to XBLA but I want it on WiiWare and I want it NOW)
2) Wizards & Warriors
3) Blaster Master
4) Clash at Demonhead (if you haven't played this game, OMG, not-download it now!)
5) Any 2-D brawler: I will accept Double Dragon, Final Fight, TMNT, X-Men, or even The Simpsons, just make it happen, dammit!
Okay that's it. And yes, they're mostly NES games, because the NES is still the most influential system in my life, and that's even after playing Chrono Trigger on the SNES, because I would never have done that if not for my NES.

I'd like to play a sweet Mega Man 2 or Ninja Gaiden 2 remake, personally.
Speaking of which, whatever became of that ninja in dev. by Vanillaware for the Wii? I Haven't heard anything about that in awhile
05/04/2008 21:20
I just realized: if Dead Phoenix was intended as a franchise revival, it lived up to it's name if nothing else.
