RetroforceGO! recording episode 43 tonight: Squaresoft photo

Ah, Square. Before the Enix merger, before spinoffs, before girly-boys and big, unweildy Roman numerals, there was simply Square. Back when men were men and women were 8-bit, they published many of our favorite games.

That's not to say we won't mention Kingdom Hearts in passing, but we're trying to keep this old school. That is kinda what we do here, right? So let's forget about Enix for a day and rekindle our love affair with Squaresoft. What were your favorites? Hit the comments and tell us all about it, and leave your questions for the show.

Oh, don't even mention Square USA.

Maybe it's Karma, but I feel that, whilst the whole "Evermore was made to cockblock Seken Dunsetsu 3" rumor is false, they brought it upon themselves with said spite on the Mana series.

And Mystic Quest, god that was an awful game.

I never really had an SNES. I've played the Chrono Trigger PS1 port and GBA version of Breath of Fire 2. What would be an awesome Square RPG for me to start off on the SNES?

Xenogears was a pretty mad game in my opinion, the story was a classic post-FFVII mindfuck until the second half where everything just turned to shite.

Seriously, you get to a point after fighting and progressing your way through the story where you're presented with a montage of the world being infected with some virus and people turning into mutants or something. It's as if the writers realised they had to wrap the game up in 20 minutes so they just threw the story into a meat grinder and told people it was boss fight time.
But still the turn based robot fighting action along with freudian and other philisophical influences was pretty cool.

Also has anyone mentioned Erghiez yet, sort of an average 3D fighter but half the cast were FFVII characters so it was acceptable :)

My favorite Square Soft game of all time is Secret of Mana, though I've heard you all speak of it numerous times. A little blub of how cool it was when you finally got the Flammie Drum so you could wander all around the world in beautiful Mode 7 graphics and that you can rescue Santa Claus in the game, how awesome was that?!?

My three favorite Final Fantasy titles are VII, Tactics, and XII.

Favorite Square titles period are Romancing saga (ps2), Saga Frontier, Xenogears, VII, Tactics, XII, and Vagrant Story.

I really liked Vagrant Story, but this may have been because I was at University and it was way better than thinking about studying.

Question: When the retroforcego crew play games like final fantasy, do you play to get through the storyline, or are you interested in finding and destroying all the optional bosses (ruby weapon from FFVII etc) as well??

Squaresoft has issues.
Where'd they learn their numbering?
Is it III(3) or VI(6)?
[Sorry for the mess up guys. My fault]

Best square game no one played, in my opinion, would go to the Romancing Saga remake for PS2. I thought it was incredible, granted, if you can't hanlde the anxiety of such a non-linear game you would absolutely hate it.

Worst, I'd have to give to The Bouncer.

Parasite Eve FTW!!! Now question time; do you guys think Square Soft could have survived in this day and age? Why or why not? And as a side question, what Square Soft or Square Enix game would you want in a different style or media?

I would of loved to played Romancing Saga PS2 but, again, dark specter of PAL attacks.

They released that god awful Unlimited Saga though, my god, it's bad enough they turned it into Dungons and Dragons but the battle system threw out all the rules of SaGa right out the window (what the? Now I can lose more than one LP for being ko'ed?! Attacks reduce LPS?! WHAT MANNOR OF NONSENCE IS THIS?!)

What is your favorite RPG combat system made by Squaresoft?

Another: Why do menus in basically all RPGs take so long to learn? Is it a need in RPGs or do the Japanese think streamlining is for wimps?
In Chrono Trigger I spent like two minutes figuring out that the item screen doesn't let you equip items.

Also, I found a copy of Chrono Trigger for 50 bucks! Ya hooo! No more not emulators for me!

The best games out the Square days are Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II (IV for you purists), Final Fantasy III (VI), Einhander, and Final Fantasy Tactics. I swear to god, I really don't want to hear about that over rated pile of crap that is Final Fantasy VII (The game that ruined RPGs).

Question Time: What do you think of the recent trend of the Final Fantasy Remakes? With added content and translation and bug "fixes," do you think they are fair to the people who want to play the games they know and love again?

I ask this because my favorite line was taken out of Final Fantasy VI Advance and I was left very disappointed. No more "Call me a treasure hunter or I'll rip your lungs out."

Pi related.

Yeah, tell me about it man, Unlimited Saga was intensely niche. So niche, in fact, that the target demographic does not exist yet! Haha. I did wind up beating it with one character though and kind of enjoyed it, just not nearly as much as I could have. Its too bad too, because I thought it was a really beautiful game, and I hope the next Saga game has that 2d/3d thing going on as well.

Romancing looked a little odd, but I got used it it and began to appreciate it (though I think they might have chosen this style to stay semi-true to the superdeformed nature of the source material), but I absolutely love the visuals of Saga Frontier II and Unlimited.

Tobal No.1 was hot sauce as a fighter.

Also . . .

Please . . .

Do what ever you can in your power . . .

To talk about Bushido Blade 1 and 2.

Maybe if someone talks about it, they'll give us more.

And to be honest, I want a new Bushido Blade just a little more than I want a new classic style Mega Man. But just slightly more.

Also Crono Cross was a fine enough game, but it failed to give me what I really loved about Chrono Trigger: Time Travel related gameplay. Cross had nice time travel related story elements, but my dream of a Chrono Trigger sequel involved a dozen time periods and the ability to cause a temporal paradox.

Hahaha, man, you would probably loathe my very being :p
For me its VII > all numbered, Cross > Trigger. I do enjoy pretty much everything Square has put out though, to varying degrees.

Do I think VII is the BEST? No. It is my favorite, but it is not the "best". I would probably have to award that to XII, for having superior art direction, translation, dialogue, and subtle but powerful character development (though these points are hotly debated.) One need only get past their tendencies to let nostalgia pull the 16-bit wool over their eyes (not directing that at you)

Go Final fantasy 6 !!

Coolest thing between Square and Enix is their respective easter egg toward each other before they merged.

BUSHIDO BLADE! HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN?! OMG I WANT A NEW ONE THAT'S GOOD THAT HAS 4 PLAYER MULTIPLAYER AND RAGDOLL!

I KNOW IT WON'T HAPPEN BUT I CAN DREAM! I CAN DREAM!

I liked 2 but there were too many people with guns and that kind of ruined it. Though it was funny to watch them run and it took like 1 or 2 shots and they were out. I loved the cinematic looking levels too, the beach on the first and the bamboo forest were my favorites. I loved running next to the enemy slashing at each other, totally looked like an old school samurai flick.

Question: Why do people love Chrono Trigger when it is such a terrible, terrible game? And why do they hate Cross when it is clearly superior in every way?

Also: Why do people still believe that crap about Square almost going out of business before putting out FF1? Or about them almost going out of business after Spirits Within? They were rolling in cash.

Final Fantasy 4 forever. Parasite Eve was also amazing, as well as Secret Of Mana.

Concerning NOT EMULATORS and NOT ROMS, have you played one of the finer games that was definitely NOT TRANSLATED, namely Bahamut Lagoon? If so, I'd like to know what you thought about this beast that never made it to the states.

Yeah, I've been wishing for a new Bushido Blade since the PS2 came out and that fucking shitpile of a game "Kengo: Master of Bushido" came out and completely pissed all over what should have been the next great samurai game. The worst part is, Kengo was developed by Lightweight, who also developed Bushido Blade 1 and 2. I've pretty much given up all hope towards a Bushido Blade style fighting game in the future.

Best male character: Setzer (FF VI)
Best female character: Rinoa (FF VIII)
Best couple: Locke and Celes (FF VI)
Best villain: Sephiroth (FF VII)
Best cutscene: The opera house (FF VI)
Best story: Chrono Trigger
Best combat system: Chrono Trigger
Best replay value: Chrono Trigger
Best opening: FF VIII
Best ending: FF VI
Best soundtrack: Kingdom Hearts
Best multiplayer: Secret of Mana (the only other one I can think of is Ergheiz)
Best game of all: Chrono Trigger

I think the early FF games are good, but not great... Aside from RPGs, Square did some good games, but nothing really unforgettable, IMO.

@-PL-: Yeahhh, I know. That's too unfortunate too. Honestly I just kind of acted like that game was never released. Haha, sure I've seen it, but I've never touched it!

I just really wish we could expect more games from Square that aren't just RPG related. But now that they're Square/Enix, god only knows if that will ever happen. They just seem to be putting out a whole lot of FF related games. I'm really, really burnt out on that series.

Gen, I seriously hope you are kidding about Square almost being out of business when they released FF1 because people at Square during the time have said numerous amounts of time that they almost went out of business. It is the reason it was named Final Fantasy because they thought it was their final game.

Let's hear some love for Rad Racer! First Square game I ever beat. First game that we ever saw Power G'Loved into submission by Lucas! The NES's answer to OutRun, and a fungame with awesome music (that was selectable at any time) to boot.

Final Fantasy was also the first RPG that I ever beat. I found it to be much more accessible than Dragon Warrior. Back in the day, there were three of us taking turns for play. We couldn't play it unless we were all together. Good times. It took forever, but still one of the most memorable gaming moments for me! And these days I'm playing the retranslated version of Chrono Trigger with my (non-gaming) girlfriend in the same way. Which is just like happiness in a bottle.

madninja: No, that rumor is totally false. Square way not have been printing money like they do now, but they were very much afloat with their games at the time. Rad Racer, King's Knight, 3D world Runner and many others were doing just fine sales-wise in Japan.

I think there was a rumor floating around at the time that their parent company was going to give up on them because they didn't think videogames were going to make them as much money as other ventures could have.

But the official reason, from his own mouth, for naming it "Final Fantasy" was because Sakaguchi was going to quit the company early and go back to college. Since making games had been a "fleeting dream" of his taht he felt he wasn't going to ever be successful at, his Dragon Quest clone was his "Final Fantasy". And if Sakaguchi himself says that's the way it went, that's the way it went.

Why is it that Square, despite several dabbles in film/television, continue to fail so hard at it even though one would think that given their history of strong characters and storylines that this would not be the case?

Both their FF5 sequel anime and the FF:Unlimited anime were mediocre at best, with the latter having some of the most embarassing bad animation quality of the last few decades. FF: The Spirits Within, despite having great visual effects work and a good musical score (though by Elliot Goldenthal as opposed to Uematsu), combined horribly boring characters with a plot that needed three times the amount of running time to properly tell. Most recently, you have FF7: Advent Children, a pretty but utterly pathetic sequel to a fantastic game with a stupid plot, nonexistent character development, and a horribly pathetic way of hauling Sephiroth back into the story. This film is best compared to shitty Disney direct-to-video sequels like The Return of Jafar and The Little Mermaid II as opposed to FF7 or even other anime films.

On the other hand, you have tons of missed opportunities. Chrono Trigger, despite being an obvious choice for an anime given its character design, has never been made into an anime other than that weird short floating around the net with the nus having a party. FF4 or FF6, another potentially great anime series, has also never been realized.

I'd say Parasite Eve was definitely right up there, that was just so different in story/setting and how it played to most the other RPGs I had played. Unfortunately my PS1 broke before I could get the sequel and after I got my PS2 I kinda forgot about it :(

The only bad thing about that game I remember was the PAINFULLY slow movement. Even holding run Aya felt like she was just plodding along.

Let's see. Did any of you buy Tobal No. 1 just to get the FF7 demo? (It was actually a pretty smooth fighting game at the time.) Have you made a party in FF1 with just white mages (or just monks, or just thieves... etc) to see how far you could get? How far did you get in Vagrant Story before the tedium set in? Was the Draw system in FF8 a complete abomination or just a horrendous crime against fun?
