RetroforceGO! recording episode 42 tonight: Easter eggs photo

Surprise! We're recording a day early. Shocking, right? Kind of like cracking open your chocolate easter egg and finding this flesh-eating Peep inside, waiting to pick your bones clean. Don't front, you know Peeps are evil. Watch, now the Peep fanboys will come out of the woodwork and call me "arrogant" for stating the fact.

Anyway, tomorrow is Easter, and as you might imagine, we'll be busy doing what it is people do on Easter: fighting off hordes of flesh-eating Peeps. So we'll be recording the show a day early, and this week it's all about Easter eggs in games. Secret rooms, hidden cutscenes, and hey -- try hitting that chicken with your sword. No, go ahead, see what happens. Hit the comments with your favorites and your questions for the show. We'll see you tomorrow. If the Peeps don't get us.

That is such a great fucking idea for a podcast theme. My hat's off to the clever little fellow who came up with that.

My question -- What Easter Egg are you most proud of finding all by yourself, or which one was the hardest to uncover?

My favorite is the Adult Mag from the original FF4.

Not that it's much of an Easter Egg, but I hate the Toasty! one from Stepmania. Nothing quite like losing your concentration when going for AAAs because some bastard pops out on the screen to say hello.

I think the neat Easter Eggs are the ones that somehow involve casts and crews for the game specifically...like in The Immortal for the NES, there was a secret passage you could take and you'd find a break room where the game creators were just hanging around. That's kinda badass.

What's the craziest Easter Egg you guys have ever found? I mean, just plain off-the-wall nuts.

When I was younger (which was like 2 years ago) I used to love getting together with family on holidays because that meant we got to play video games together. Did any of you get excited in the same way I did? And if so, what was the most memorable game you used to play with them?

Question: What's the coolest but (gameplay wise) most useless Easter Egg you've ever heard of/used?

Comments: I remember entering the old Komani code in Gradius III for SNES and becoming angry when my ship blew up. (For those who didn't know, they replaced the Left and Right part of the code with Left Trigger, Right Trigger)

The GBA remake of the original Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission had a bonus mission after the escape sequence where Samus' ship crashes and you have to get the suit back by being all stealthy. Then after beating that, you unlocked the original NES version. It was friggin' sweet.

What genre if games do feel have the most and/or best easter eggs? To me it seems RPGs fit the bill. Even Super Mario RPG had some great easter eggs with samus in the hotel room!

The various konami characters appearing in plato's cavern. It was kinda cool to see their faces. the developers ghosts in metal gear solid was also frickin sweet but many of my favorites come from mario rpg. Samus really did need a nap after Super Metroid. Now if you'll excuse me i must place duct tape on lots of puppies paws to watch them walk around funny for the next thirty minutes.

One of my favorite easter eggs was on Metal Gear Solid, when Psycho Mantis started to "read my mind". I was blown away when he said "Soooo, you like to play Castlevania?", that was a great touch from Kojima and co.

Also, what are your favorite type of easter eggs? Like kind of weapon, a character from another game, honorable mentions for the lulz and other.

What do you think is better: Easter Eggs that are found eventually as a reward for exploring the game, like the "talk with the developer" one from Chrono Trigger or the ones that you find by pure accident/luck (push these headstones 40 times in a certain order or stuff like that)?

Also, Red Hering!

It seems cheatcodes used to unlock hidden content isn't being used as much these days. Or Easter eggs in general for that matter. Do you guys miss secret codes to unlock special game modes or characters, for example, the big head mode in Goldeneye? Or do you think it's best that developers are steering away from cheatcodes?

Because to tell you the truth, I really miss hidden content like the paintball and big head modes in Goldeneye. I really wish developers would be less serious and do stuff like that again.

And will Evil Chad make an appearance? He seems to have escaped from Chad's subconcious and is now wreaking havoc on the cblogs.

My favorite easter eggs are probably the ones in Blizzard games. Especially in Warcraft 2. The extra commands you can type in to get random messages, the last bits of dialog every unit says, and of course, exploding sheep.

Did any of you ever play Rebel Assault 2? The game was pretty bad, and filled with crappy real life actors, but it had so many fun easter eggs, like if you held down the W & B keys, you could watch a stormtrooper fall to his death Wile E. Coyote style.

You should also take into consideration all of those easter eggs that turned out to be total FUCKING LIES, but you wanted to believe in them so, so bad...

This is an awesome idea for a podcast! I recall fondly the programmers room and porno mag in FFIV.

Have you guys heard of Totaka's song in Nintendo games (I mean you should have)? The little tune that was written by Kazumi Totaka? The most obvious one is in Mario Paint when you click on the O I believe (everything blows up and a little square wave tune appears).

Wikipedia claims theres about a dozen Nintendo games that have this hidden tune, but the circumstances around how to get the tune to appear is pretty crazy. In fact people suspect that he has something hidden in every game he's worked audio on! When I noticed he did audio for Wii Sports I wondered if it was hidden there too.

It almost makes me think if it's too hard to find, is it worth it?

Also I would like to ask for well-wishes for my fiancee ZeroAtma. He had an appendicitis late last night and we've been at the hospital all night (I'm really fucking tired, but I'm sure he's feeling worse). I'm sure well-wishes from you guys would really make his day ^_^

This reminds me, I've been quite the slackass ever since I got promoted to the main page. I was going to do another It's A Secret To Everybody after Rev's cheat code rant a couple weeks ago.... but then I didn't.

Have you ever completed the Adventure Easter egg yourself? I know I haven't!

My favorite accidental secret discovery, though not really an Easter egg, was when I found out how to shrink your driver in Super Mario Kart all by myself. I believe it was holding Y and pressing A on the controller while on the driver select screen- I don't remember exactly, as I've misplaced my copy of Super Mario Kart for about the last decade or so :(

I enjoyed this one in Mega Man 7 quite a bit.

I know of other Easter eggs but can't think of many at the moment- most of the secrets I'm thinking of are just plain old cheat codes.

Mmm...Cadbury’s Creme Egg...

Wait, where was I? Oh, yes...Easter eggs in games. My mind is drawing a blank right now, unfortunately, but here’s a question:

You guys don’t just consider ordinary cheat codes “Easter eggs”, do you? Like, I always felt that an Easter egg was some sort of cool secret thing that you found in the game, as opposed to something that was unlocked (or changed) by entering a sequence of buttons.

I mean, I’d even count Insomniac’s “skill point” system (or the Medal Points system in Uncharted) as a sort of Easter egg. Unless you looked that shit up, you would have no idea how to do any of it. For example, one of the awards in Uncharted, “Survivor”, requires you to kill 50 enemies without dying. And some of the stuff in Resistance: Fall of Man is nigh-impossible to do on purpose. I mean, really, who would think to “jump at least 50 meters” in a certain level?

Also, regarding naia-the-gamer’s fiancée...I hope that the appendectomy (if he has to get one) goes smoothly! Feel better, ZeroAtma!

While StarFoX and F-Zero were some of the coolest games back in the mid-90s (thanks to Mode 7 & the Super FX Chip), they stand today as two of the most ridiculous franchises from Nintendo. It's not that the games themselves have ever been that bad (most were really great, actually), but the characters behind them are just absurd. Ever since StarFox Adventures, for example, the characters have developed love interests that often turned into central story points...and it was absurd to me to see something take itself so seriously when trying to get me to give a shit about Slippy and his blond, pigtailed, pink-frog girlfriend. And Krystal was the worst. By the fifth game, every single character -- save for the robot -- had a bizarro pallet-swap girlfriend and a ridiculous back-story that often took precedence over the actual levels or gameplay. More or less furry fodder, if you ask me.

And what the fuck is up with cast of F-Zero?! It's like all the rejects from Who Wants to be a Superhero got together for an after party. As far as I recall, these characters were not present in the first game, but they were all over GX. How am I supposed to take a character like Captain Falcon seriously? In that ridiculous getup, and that "I'm Batman" voice?!
BenHaskett's Avatar
BenHaskett at 03/22/2008 14:51
*My post was apparently too long. Here's the rest of it:*

I guess my question is: Do you think it's possible for these franchises to be relevant again while still employing the same absurd characters, or do you think that the roster would need a massive overhaul before moving forward? Or, maybe these two franchises were more a product of the times and should just die with the 90s? I can understand that Nintendo is in a unique situation; most of their IPs were developed in the 80s, where cheesy videogame scenarios were the norm. But they've done such a good job making Metroid overcome its corny sci-fi beginnings that it's really just bizarre to see StarFox and F-Zero look as silly as they do. Come to think of it, it's not even so much that both series have ridiculous characters, but more so that they all take themselves soooo seriously. Do...do you think Captain Falcon is cool?

Also, Unrelated, I listened to your Phantasy Star podcast. I have also played Phantasy Star Online and I agree with Colette that there are assholes every quarter inch. Her assessment moved me and I drew her a masterpiece:

I do hope you enjoy it.

@kwaselow,
The Chris Houlihan Room! There was a contest in Nintendo Power wherein the winner would get their name in A Link to the Past. It really would only appear it the game glitched during a change from room to room. Instead of freaking out, the game would sen you there. And since Nintendo games were genereally so rock solid, it took a long long time before anyone actually discovered it.
"My name is Chris Houlihan. This is my secret room. Keep it between us, okay?"
Just a room full of coins. I never discovered it accidentally, myself. I read about ages ago, and had to basically use a walkthrough to get me there.

I hate this stretch of holidays. I have an inane fear of midgets so all the leperchauns that come up in St. Patrick's Day make it my own personal Halloween. And then for Easter, people always get me those chocolate bunnies and when I was younger, and even to this day, I refuse to eat chocolate bunnies because they're just so damn cute. So my parents would save them and we'd have friggin year old chocolate bunnies sitting on top of the fridge.

One year my cousin took a bit of a choco-bunny's ear and I freaked. Painful memory.

Of course with easter eggs in games there's the beginning with the one in Adventure.

And of course NBA Jam needs discussion. One of the few sports games everyone can enjoy. And if Big Heads and Hilary Clinton jamming on the Utah Jazz's Karl Malone isn't amazing, my life has been a lie.

Mario 64? The infamous message and well, Yoshi, even though he sucked to ride in 3D and there was nothing left to do in the game once you got him.

Do you count the Warp Pipes in Mario as Eggs? That stuff kind of became the norm for Mario but first we'd ever seen it. And then you had the Whistles in SMB3 and then SMWorld took it another step further with the hidden exits and Star Zone blew my mind enough as it is....but once I found out there was a Special Zone and it was hard as all get-out, it was a mind meltdown.

How about the Second Quest in the original Zelda? How many eggs are an entirely new, full game after you beat the original?

Are they game cheats or glitches?
Knifing > Forking.
(here I am using a symbol as one syllable because of creative license and the fact that the knifing/forking conversation made me go hysterical and I want to start it up again)
What easter egg did you guys work for the hardest? Are there any you worked hard for only to find out thay weren't worth it/ weren't real? How about the Minus World or the Warp Zone? Did you find them when you were kids, or did you just find it after you knew about it? Did you feel a twinge of happiness as you used the Warp Whistle like in The Wizard? Finally, what was the first easter egg you guys found?

I still think my favorite easter eggs are in Chrono Trigger. All the stuff you can do in that game are amazing. Some of them have absolutely no reward, but are amusing none the less. My favorite is the Developer Ending you can get by beating Lavos with just Crono and Marle (though I have to admit I had an easier time using only Crono). Anyways... question time.

[b]How do you think people find some of these easter eggs? For example, the infamous Mega Man X egg were you could get the Hadouken move for X. It involved performing specific actions in a stage in order for it to be revealed. Oh, and while I am thinking about Mega Man X, wasn't it cool how beating one stage affected another? I always liked freazing the factory and breaking the power plant. You needed to flood the jungle stage so you could grab one of the life ups... So many damn crazy easter egg type things in that game.

Mega Man X2 also had the Shoryuken hidden in a similar manner to the hadoken in X.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, if you finish an airship level while wearing one of the 3 suits the newly restored king will have something different to say, one new phrase for each suit. My favorite is the Hammer Brother suit one.

The Lunar: Silver Star Story springs were a pretty great fan service style easter egg. (if you found some soap and made it through a really tough area you could get a short cutscene of the girls in your party taking a bath. You could also find a guys spring if you're into that kind of thing, and it was waaaaayy easier to get to)
