RetroforceGO! recording episode 40 tonight: Videogame hype over the years photo

Rumor has it some game is coming out this week. Something about Links and Peaches and furries, or links to fuzzy peaches, I don't know, I haven't really been paying attention. Anyway, everybody seems to be pretty excited about it, so we thought we'd take a look at videogame hype this week.

Hype, more often than not, results in massive disappointment. Remember how awesome the Power Glove was going to be? How the Virtual Boy was going to change everything? That's not to say this will be the case with whatever it is you kids are so excited about this week, but it sure is funny to talk about the hype that surounded some of the stuff that came out when we were younger.

Remember some? Hit the comments.

Super Mario Bros 3 comes to mind, and I shouldn't have to explain why.

The hype about Jaguar!

Nah. A good example though would be many was hyped about the Game Gear. It wasn't a bad system, but the games..ugh.

Does anyone remember the CD-i? Or the hype surrounding it? It might have been just me because at the time my dad worked for phillips back when it was called magnavox, or magnavox back when it was called phillips and he brought one home all excited with a new "zelda" game for me to play. I'm sure everyone is somewhat familiar with the zelda and mario games for the CD-i. I've still got it sitting in my basement with the 30 some odd games/interactive videos for it. I remember hearing so much about this "new cd based game system from phillips". but my god what a piece of crap that system was.
Or the game boy pocket? what a piece of crap. touted for being so small and all that but it ate AAA batteries like a game gear.

Even with Super Mario 3 / the Power Glove / The Wizard, I think most efforts of yesteryear pale in comparison to the hype that all of the internets make possible.

And Daikatana. Someone had to say it.

i remember the european magazines hyped the dreamcast as the revolution, with futuristic games as Blue Stinger and Sonic Adventure

Granted, Dreamcast is an awesome system, but..... Blue Stinger?

and for retrohype, just pick any EGM, Gamepro and Nintendo Power and watch the previews of games like starfox 2, the U.s Realease of Satella view, The Super mega SEGA CHANNEL!!!!!

ah good times

I was wondering if the hype ever convinced any of you to buy any of the systems/extras. I remember reading about the virtual boy and Panasonic 3D0 and even trying them at the stores, I was never impressed and felt let down when I tried it. Now my real question is does any of you believe the reason why some consoles failed was because of the excessive amount of money that was put into the marketing, instead of where the money should of been: the technology.

System hype. .. the Wii being a 'revolution' .. which it was for a month... for the people who could get a hold of it. It is amusing to see how many people have one and don't use it vs the people who want one so badly.

PS3.. "will replace your computer" .. was that Harrison or master Ken who said that quote.

Games.. oh man...Halo 3 comes to mind instantly...no amount of burger king cups and being sold in 7-11 etc could make this game be great (mind you it is better than average, but couldn't get that hype).

Metal Gear Solid 4... wow, the hype train on this one, I don't even care about the series, but some of the fans make me sad "IT HAS THE BEST STORYLINE OF ANY GAME"...riiiight.

*goes back to any rpg*

Any game's hype pales in comparison to Super Mario Bros 3. Come on, having an entire film made in its honour?

I'll call the hype on the N64 though. Especially here in Europe, everywhere else had it and barely a week went by without hearing more on it.

State of Emergency. They hyped the living bejesus out of that game because it was Rockstar's first release after GTA3, and I admit I fell victim to that one. Bought it launch day, traded it in three hours later, it was worth losing the money to just get it the hell out of my house.

I know it's not the most retro game... but it was for the gamecube, Twilight Princess.
The hype and pushed release dates holding out for the Wii kind of ruined that game for me.
"Ok Spring 2004... Nope December 2004 for xmas... Nope November 2005... Umm Maybe we'll just hold onto it for the Wii and release on both systems." GIVE ME MY GAME, that's how I felt!

The Panasonic M2.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panasonic_M2

It was supposed to be the most amazing videogame console ever (or so they said), and I think it came really close to release, but they canned it. The M2's flagship title, D2 (what a shitty flagship) was eventually ported to Dreamcast. I remember reading advertisements in magazines and "sneak peek cutting edge" features that showed screenshots of the M2 in action, and it was kind of impressive, but there was very little content released about it and I wasn't really surprised when it never came out... didn't care anyway, the Sega Katana was where the party at.

I'm packin' another haiku this week

Hype is a let down
Expectations are nigh met
It drinks yo milkshake

(tell me if I should keep doung these because I would love to keep them comming and hear them on the show and i just want to know your opinion)
Also, what were your most hyped games? How much hype did you feel after comming out of The Wizard? For that matter, what are your thoughts on that movie which was entirely based on hype? What game in your opinion were the biggest let downs after being hyped? How much hype did you guys get into when you were kids? Finally, Topher, are you so grouchy now because of some let down hype when you were a small child.

I seem to recall lots of hype for Bubsy and Gex, two games, which... Well... Yeah...
Any game(aside from Conker) that was suppose to be "dirty" and "mature" Such as BMXXX.. Hoooo boy did that game blow.. But BOOBIES!!!

Also, I think when we were younger.. NES and SNES days, I think it was easier for hype to fool us, just show some footage of a game and say how awesome it is in the right way, and I would have believed it.
Thankfully, as I've grown older, I've gotten smarter and not let hype for games such as Lair get to me.
When do you think you first started spotting BS in hype?
And what hype did you fall for?
OR, what hype did you fall for, and feel so stupid for doing so, you tried to make people think the game was good.. "No no! Battle Toads is AWESOME!" (side not.. not a horrible game.. I know.. Just far too hard)

Duke Nukem Forever. I remember back when they first announced it, pretty sure it was around the time that the Commodore 64 launched... The thing about DNF is that it's been on a cycle of being hyped every once every so often before fading back into vaporware land, but if you add up all those rounds of hype it would probably rank up there as one of the most hyped games of all time.

Questions for answer giving:

1) When the RFGO! game gets released you guys get an unlimited budget with which to hype it. What is the biggest/craziest bit of marketing that you can come up with?

2) When a game gets massive hype do you guys feel that said hype can be detrimental to the enjoyment of the game?

3) Any game that got uber massive hype that you guys felt actually deserved it and lived up to it?

I said hype a lot :P

I remember having the metaphorical pissing contest with my friends back in elementary school about who was going to get the SNES before everyone else. I'm not sure if the hype was there because of Nintendo/Nintendo Power, or if we were the ones responsible.

Of course, this trivial bullshit stopped when we all ended up at my house playing Street Fighter 2. For the whole weekend. Non-stop.

Anyone have those times when they were a kid that they were just completely immersed and/or blown away by the fun they were having on that brand new console? Mmmm...new console smell...

Milkshake drinking is like dolphin loving: there can never be too much of it, and it's always a positive thing.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention BLAST PROCESSING!

I remember getting into arguments with other kids about whether it actually did/meant anything or not. Hell, one kid I knew sold his SNES to get a Genesis because he was worried that the SNES would become "obsolete" due to its primitive technology :P

It's weird, recently I have been thinking that games today always have bugs or some other form of tom-foolery. In contrast, most 2D retro games have no bus whatsoever. Paired with the extreme fun of retro games: would you consider a lot of retro games to be considered "perfect'?

Also,

While Super Mario World was (and still is) several levels of awesome, I still cringe at the adverts proclaiming "96 levels"

When they released the GBA port, they changed it to "96 EXITS"

Then there's the extremely long Ultra/N64 hype train. Judging by a few websites, they announced the console in '93, while it wasn't released in Europe until '97. Plus there's the whole "Dream Team" shite.

Do you think it's ever possible for a game to live up to it's hype? Or do you think that every hyped game is doomed to not live up to its expectations?

I ask because I'm playing brawl right now and I'm a little bit dissapointed.

Not really a game, per se, but the hype surrounding the Nintendo 64 that year that it came out... it was unbelievable. And then the launch games were, well, were they really that good? SAll I know is that my mom's boss got her kids an N64, and gave their SNES to my mom, who gave it to me... best deal EVER.

So far this generation, what has been the most epic letdown based off a hype bubble? It can be any game you think failed to live up to the hype. BioShock, Twilight Princess, Red Steel, Sonic the Hedgehog 360, or something else? Why?

Also, what role does underhype have in games? Talk about some of the great games that weren't hyped: Crackdown and MLB Power Pros come to mind this generation.

But when we all where little we had nintendo power and egm covers and previews, we looked at thoose for MONTHS and stare at them for forever!
Hype has always been there and always will be around, just because we love games and we want to play than all ASAP.
Quastion for this week, has there been game(s) where you were realy exited about and DID meet expectations?
And has there ever been a game that you thought "MAH that game is probably not so good" but when you played it, it went over you expectations.

ps: no problem chad that you opend my gift before the show maby I hope you still like it though! It as no problem, but for everyone that does not know what it is take a pic and post it on your blog ;)

Anyway, hype is 99% the reason why I stopped reading previews, it's both a bad thing and a good thing I'm my eye, 'cause i like being hyped. when Starcraft 2 was announced my head went through the roof, even though i saw it coming a mile away what with it being announced in South Korea of all places, because I wanted to have head through ceiling.

What ever I'll get to the point.

Do you like being hyped or are you too afraid of being over-hyped? Or do you think that hype in general is just stupid?
hpv's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/09/2008 18:03

The worst thing about hype is not the games that are huge piles of shit (Daikatana) or mediocre snore-fests (halo), it's the ones that are decent, good games that get blown way out of proportion. And it's not all pre-release hype. The instances of outrageous hype that really stick with me are the ones built up around a game AFTER it has been released. A phenomenon that is probably best characterized by Final Fantasy 7, a good, but not stellar game (with shit writing in the translation) that I can barely stand to look at because it reminds me of the insane hype that comes out of almost anyone you talk to about it. There's a similar effect with halo, but that game is pretty crap to begin with.

Do any of you have games that you would have liked better if not for the hype? And is it possible for a great game to fall to just good due to the negative effects of a hype train or does a game reach a certain threshold where it becomes impervious to hype penalties?

Has there been any games that have exceeded the hype surrounding it?

For me, it was Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation. There was a quick clip on some random demo disc that was sent to me and from that, I was completely hooked on finding any and every last tidbit about the game. Once it came out I beat it the same day and immediately started playing the game again.

Does anyone remember the CD-i? Or the hype surrounding it?

even better, I've got one :-)

Sega Saturn was pretty hyped up.
yeah I've got that one too...

the Matrix-game comes to mind as a huge let-down due to the shoddy controls... the whole concept of being a part of a movie ( those who've played will know what I mean ) was brilliant especially since it's one of my favourite trilogies of all times!

One of the games that I followed ever since it was announces was Return To Castle Wolfenstein, and I had seriously mixed feelings about it... the SP was great until the zombies started showing up but the MP was absolutely incredible! I've played virtually no other games online or on LANs for 2 years straight :-)

I never felt a lot for HALO in the beginning, I figured a mouse and keyboard were the only way to play FPSs and I did understand the hype one bit... but I got it for free with my XBOX and decided to give it a go, since then I've played more FPS on consoles then on PC's... couch beats deskchair everytime!

A game that I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate is HALO3, HOWEVER it totally did not live up to the hype simply because the hype had outgrown the game on a massive scale, I mean I even joined into that whole SOTA-ARG that was started around it, wasted like 2 months on the fora trying to figure out all kinds of weird stuff...

A game that was thoroughly hyped and that lived up to it was UT2K3 I loved that game... 2K4 was even slightly better but didn't really improve THAT much I thought...

I like hypes about games, but a lot of times they just get way bigger then the game could ever be... All the better when a game totally lives up to its hype, like with BioShock, Forza2, GRAW2, COD4 etc etc :-)

Instead of going with the obvious choices, I'm going to show everyone some commercials for hyped systems that are no longer with us (or never really were there):

N-Gage
(Side Talking version)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q6kd9GBf2mA
(Not side-talking but the disclaimer at the end made me laugh a lot.)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=c2ht_W2oqms

How about the Gizmondo?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3up29nHp_og

How about the Konix MultiSystem (For our friend on the other side of the pond in Europe)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RgkOLfcRWYA

Or the famous vaperware (thanks to Penny Arcade), The Phantom system?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Z6KIHqLQri0

But the PS3 still goes into my book as the most over-hyped system. I think the money quote which turned me against the next gen Sony system was Kazai's comment on the cost, which was something like "People are going to want it, so they're going to save up there money, and buy it because it's a must have...".

Star Fox for SNES was hyped, 3D graphics and all. Thankfully it was awesome.

That 3D chip was also hyped: how it cost a gazillion dollars to manufacture, how it's ability to render 10 polygons per second would change the face of gaming...

But most of those FX Chip titles ended up being crap.

What are some examples of the RFGoer's bying into the hype?

For me, it was HALO. People pushed that game on me like it was the second coming of Christ, but it felt just like a bland version of Quake 2. I remember being roped into it at a party and proclaiming it the worst game I've ever played.

Unrelated note: Retroforce needs more retro PC gaming! It's all consoles. Short of the occasional Day of the Tentacle/Monkey Island reference, it seems that retro pc gamers are an ever rarer breed.
