RetroforceGO! recording episode #32 tonight: SHMUP EPISODE, OH GOD YES photo

When Dyson called to tell me we were doing an episode on 2D shooters, I had to check my calendar. My birthday isn't until May, and Christmas was weeks ago, so I was a bit confused. What had I done to deserve such a fantastic gift? At that moment, the heavens opened as angels sung the hymn of danmaku and my world was filled with resplendent color and light. Spring had come early. Cherry blossoms danced softly in the breeze, birds began chirping, brooks bubbled and splashed to life, flowers sprung from the ground in all directions. Then he said it was because Omega Five came out this week.

Oh. Well, whatever.

Anyone who listens to our show knows how i feel about shmups, so there exists the possibility that this episode will consist mostly of me yapping about Japan-only Saturn titles and trying to hold back orgasms for an hour. As such, I have been fitted with a high-voltage "correctional collar" to ensure that the other cast members are allowed to speak. While I try to coax Chad into telling me which one of them has the remote for this thing, hit the comments with your questions.

I'm looking forward to the episode. Can't wait to hear Topher going crazy about shmups. ;)

A question for you guys: What do you think of the shmups from Shin'en (like Nanostray on the DS or Iridion 2 on the GBA)? And are you looking forward to Nanostray 2?

What are the hardest shmups you guys have ever played? For me, R-Type is definitely up there since I still can't get past the first level. Until then, time for some LAZING BLAZERS!!

its not that they suck. I can play them. I just never fell in love with them. I remember when cherry blossom was all the rage. I played it and wondered what the big deal was.

I felt this way about all SHMUPS since Ikaruga. with the exception of omega 5 which I found fun. perhaps I've grown out of touch with the genre

Also, Silver surfer death screen... best facepalm ever?

Oh god. The first thing I thought about was playing Abadox on the NES. That gae introduced me to shmups, and later on I tried playing some bullet-hell games. Notice I said tried and not played...

What the heck is 2D? You kids these days and your video games.

As a question, could you see any modern franchise re-made as a classic 2D shooter? If so, what titles you would most like to see transformed?

Looking forward to this one. I've always played shmups and enjoyed them, but I went through a period a few years ago when they were pretty much all I played. The bank balance took a bit of a hit (mainly thanks to the Saturns catalogue, and the need to buy proper arcade sticks). Worth every penny though.

Where do you guys stand on sticks vs. pads? Some games I've found benefit hugely from a stick - Gradius V for example (probably because of the wretched Dualshock D-pad), but others I can quite happily play with either. In fact I did better on Ikaruga with the Gamecube Hori pad than I ever did with the Dreamcast stick.

I'm not sure you guy's consider On Rails Shooters as Shoot 'em Ups, but the StarFox series is pretty great. None of the new ones have been as good as StarFox 64 or the original, but Command was pretty close.

Also, Space Giraffe for the lose!

How do you feel about shmups that have a story to go with them? Is it even necessary for the type of game it is?

Do you feel the schmup is a genre that will continue to grow and develop? It seems like we're stuck in a rehash of old concepts with new gimmicks. Original games like Red Star seem to be the raritiy and not the norm - which makes me a sad panda

Oh yeah a question.... Vertical or Horizontal?

I've played only the occasional shmup over the years, for whatever reason it just isn't a genre I've ever really felt the need to explore, but in the interest of discovery I'd be willing to give them a shot. So then, are there any specific titles you'd recommend to a neophyte like me that lacks the experience for some of the more difficult shmups out there? And then once I've picked up on the basics, any games you'd recommend for being particularly awesome (maybe the best shmup per system)?

First of all, I completely suck at shmups. My question is which was your first shmup and which is your favourite? And what are your high scores in Space Invaders?

Also, on a side note, how do you convince someone who absolutely hates 2D games into thinking that they're at least passable and that he should try some before he speaks badly of them? He keeps claiming "They were good for their time, but compared to games today they suck." How do I combat such ignorance?

Any talk of Shumps must have the awesome Thunderforce series! I can't even count how many times I played through Thunderforce III on the Genesis, with its amazing graphics and killer soundtrack. My favorite vertical Shump has to be M.U.S.H.A. from Genesis as well.

You've all got it all wrong. The best shmups ever were the 19XX series, followed closely by the Raiden series, and then Panzer Dragoon on the Sega Saturn. Sheesh.

Hey Topher! You're the man, and SHMUPs are also the man!

How do you feel about the newer SHMUPs that are coming out nowadays? Omega Five -- great XBLA game, or greatest XBLA game? We do have Star Soldier R, The Monkey King, Shikigami no Shiro 3 and the Ikaruga rerelease on the way, but what the hell happened to all the shooters? We had like four or five coming out every week back when the Super Nintendo was in style! Where did they go, Topher? Where did they go!?

Also, did you like Wartech: Senko no Ronde? It's that kind of SHMUP / fighting game for the 360. I think it's dope as hell.

Was anyone heartbroken by the fact that Axelay never had the sequel that it promised [when you beat the game on difficult...twice]?

sadface.

Two things come to mind when I think Axelay...
1. VERY unique, multi-perspective gameplay
2. MODE 7asm!!!

Chad! You know not what you do! You've doomed us all!

Anyway, why haven't more people mentionnd Ikaruga yet? It's all about Ikaruga! I know there are more popular shmups, but Ikaruga is still my favourite.

Also, when I got a friend to play it with me on the GC, he actually tried to tap the button to shoot instead of holding it down! It was hilarious, because he didn't know how I was shooting so fast. Poor guy. Annnnyway, I'm going to go play it now, actually.

Thanks for putting Time from Twinkle Star Sprites on the front page. It's always great to see fans of the game. I must recommend it to everybody that has a way to play import games.

Going to check the show out, always great to talk about SHMUPS. Not just the popular ones.

there's one macross game in the psone in this style and it's great. i don't rememeber the title: macross, do you remember love perhaps?

a little off topic. i found this video http://youtube.com/watch?v=Pda2jBcUBWg what you think, in the gameplay sense it´s just starfox command with 16 bit graphics

What is your fondest memory of shmups in the arcade?

I clearly remember the day I went into a tiny arcade in a mall that had the vertical scrolling Macross arcade game. Considering that this was in a suburb of New Orleans, it was an AMAZING event.

Beating Giga Wing with my friend at Chinatown Fair in two credits.

Being one of a few people that played Senko no Ronde at Chinatown Fair. They had the game for less then a month. Nobody liked it and they got rid of it in favor of another 3rd Strike.

does starfox fit in this genre? I remember having a retarded fit the first time i saw that game. OMG 3D!

Also, i never was ever able to pass the third level of most of these games. You get super powerful, you get hit, then you're back to your pill shooter (yeah i called the start weapon the pill shooter). dealing out a prescription of lame.

Oh, and check out Raptor: Call of the Shadows, it's a good PC shooter in the genre from way back in '94.

My fondest memory of a shooter was playing Twinkle Star Sprites in an arcade against someone. We were bouncing shots back and forth and I nearly had a heart attack evading his boss attack, I forget which character he was using though. Any love for the Raiden series?

Seeing as everybody else has forgotten it, U.N. Squadron/Area 88 for the SNES plz. It's like Ace Combat combined with a SHMUP. That thing was the shit.

Also I do love rail shooters like Star Fox/Panzer Dragoon if those count. And if they do, Sin and Punishment ftw.

@ madninja: Somebody set up us the bomb.

I'm awfully surprised that no one's mentioned Radiant Silvergun yet. Since for whatever reason many people, incorrectly, consider it the greatest of all time.

Anyway, question time. If I was going to be a fanboi for anything out there it would be the bullet-hell style shmups from Cave. Seeing how rare these games are, and their extremely high aftermarket ebay prices, how come we dont see more games made and more publicity made for these games? I mean most people who play games will tell you that they think Ikaruga is awesome. By the way, who do I have to butt-screw to get to play Bangai-O?

Hey, awesome, a shmups episode! I would like to ask the following question: Why do you think the shmup market all but died in the west? In Japan AAA shmups can still be really successful, but in the States people seem to have forgotten how awesome a good shmup can be. I'm not trying to criticize the Touhou games or the Doujin shmup games either, as those are all very popular in Japan. Straight up, if you had infinite resources what would you do to revitalize the popularity of shmups in the US?

Could you guys talk also about Genetos? That game is so awesome! I love playing through the history of shmup design throughout the years! Chain is also pretty cool too. I tend to suck at 'bullet hell' games but somehow I can play this dynamic 'bullet hell' game pretty competently. Making chains in the hundreds is just so fun!

Also, Radiant Silvergun better get ported to XBLA.
