RetroforceGO! recording episode #30 tonight: 2007 Top tens and the year in retro photo

The year's just about over (thank God) and your friends here at RetroforceGO! are ready to close it out in the coolest way possible: with lists. You guys like lists, right? C'mon, everybody loves lists. Well, we like lists, anyway. So we made a bunch of them.

Tonight we'll be taking a look back at the year in retro, and we've compiled a list of our top ten Virtual Console titles, XBLA games, and PSN games, along with a bunch of other random top ten lists. Lists of what, you ask? Who knows? Whatever we feel like making a top ten list of. That's how we roll, kids.

We've also made some New Year's "retrolutions" that we'll be revealing later in the show, and we were wondering if any of you listeners did the same. Hit the comments and tell us all about it.

My retrolution: I'm going to finish playing Super Metroid for once. I've started it plenty of times, but never beaten it.

I made "resolutions", but no retrolutions :(

But I do have a question for yall. What retro titles do you want to see most on VC/XBLA this coming year?

For a question: what would be the most amazing/unexpected thing to happen in 2008 in gaming? I'm thinking something along the lines of the announcement of the Dreamcast 2.

I came here to blog about my resolutions and found that you guys were looking for "retrolutions."

Here are mine:
To buy every bullet hell shmup released on Wii, DS or PSP. I've already paid for Nanostray 2 and will pre-order Shikigami no Shiro III as soon as I can.

To continue supporting old-school flavored games as often as possible. Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is pre-paid; Professor Layton, Dungeon Explorer DS and N+ will all sell at least one copy.

To buy all Dragon Quest-related games so that SquareEnix will release the DS remakes and I can finally play IV, V and VI.

To continue supporting the most ridiculous and interesting games possible. And by that, I mean Suda51's games.

To continue buying Treasure games, especially those on the VC that I have purchased used.

I think that for the new year Chad and Topher should switch doing virtual console & XBL Arcade reviews. I think a solid month of "worst week ever" and the firing of 50 MS XBL employees because of said worst week ever would light a much needed fire under their ass. And maybe....just maybe they'll start releasing quality stuff on a regular schedule instead of "no games this week, BUT LOOK AT THE SHINY FIRMWARE UPDATE!"

My resolution: Buy an NES off of my friend who has two.

Also, please list the Top 10 Final Fantasy repackagings. There had to be at least 10.

My new years retrolution is to go back and play all the games I couldn't beat as a kid because I was either too inpatient or unskilled at the time. For example, Double Dragon, Ghosts N Goblins (and every other one of it's bastard children), Castlevania 1, and whatever else I can find that I hated.

Of course I like lists. I like them so much that I've done an own list of my favorite games this year.

My resolution: Hm... Maybe "come up with good resolutions for 2009"? I don't have any for the next year.

I'm looking forward to the lists. If you want a challenge: How about the top 10 Sega Genesis/Mega Drive soundtracks? ;)

My retrolution is finish Contra 4 on normal. I'll probably 100% Through The Fire And The Flames on expert before that. Also, I need to buy a working NES. I wanna play Bionic Commando, dammit!

Cataract, unless your resolution also includes buying a game genie, I don't see you beating Ghosts n Goblins just because you're not a kid anymore.

And that's not a blow to you, it's just that that game is fucking impossible, no matter how old you are.

My main “retrolution” for 2008 is to go back and beat as many of my games as I can. (Okay, so they’re not technically retro games...just indulge me for a bit, will you?) Since I don’t have nearly as much time as I used to have to play video games (college’ll do that to you), I just don’t finish most of them anymore. It’s a damn shame, too — hell there are even some games that I’ve never even played (okay, just one: Black, I’m looking at you). Is finishing games an issue for any of you guys as well?

I mean, I’m probably about 75 or 80% done with Uncharted, but I’ve only logged an hour or two with Ratchet & Clank Future, and I stopped playing Resistance when I was on the last level of the game for no particular reas—oh, wait...the reason was God of War II, and I estimate that I’m only about halfway through that game. I’m also still playing through the solo career modes of Guitar Hero III and Rock Band (though the former game hasn’t seen the inside of my PS3 since the middle of November for two reasons: (A) I moved on to Rock Band ,and (B) I’m kinda doing it to spite Activision for their refusal to allow Harmonix to patch Rock Band. I want to use my Les Paul controller, dammit!

Dang, that was longer than I intended. Anyway, I hope the four of you had a wonderful Christmas (and a great 2007 in general), and here’s hoping that however this past year went, 2008 will be even better. Happy New Year, gang, and thanks for brightening my weeks with the glory that is RetroforceGO!

Mmm... I'm going to play Panzer Dragoon Saga, Final Fantasy 6 and Outcast all over again.

What about you guys? When will you make a Castlevania Retroforce Episode? And what about a Sonic one?

Is it foolish of me to expect the retro crew to play and enjoy some 8bit and 16bit Sonic games?
I recommend playing Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2 for the Master System and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and 3+Knuckles for the Genesis/Mega Drive.

I've recently decided to go and find all my favorite games when I was a kid and try and get them in mint in their original boxes for my game room to have on display. I'm completed the entire Shinobi series and now just trying to pick up the single hits.

Wow, you guys are going to talk about PSN games? Everyday Shooter is awesome, the art style, presentation and emergent music mechanic are all very creative (I think). I hope you guys talk about it a little.

Retrolution: To f'in beat Super Mario Bros.2 (Japanese version) or die trying. Also, continue replaying Silent Hill 2 and Illusion of Gaia. And get awesome at Rock Band, of course.

New Year Retrolution: Finish all my unfinished Virtual Console Titles... Which include (ahem):

Paper Mario
Super Metroid
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros 2 (the japanese one)

It will be difficult in a year of Mario Kart Wii, No More Heroes, and of course Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I need to do it.

Is there any of you stocking unfinished VC games?

Easy.

Play more shmups.

Attempt to beat the shmups I actually have played.

Buy Contra IV and then beat it on Normal! :D

Buy every Treasure game that hits the VC (I've gotten all of them so far I believe, unless I've missed one I can't think of. Alien Soldier, Sin and Punishment, Gunstar Heroes, anything else?)

Beat Super Mario Bros 2: Lost Levels (Hah, yeah right).

Have sex with women.

New Years Resolutions huh?

1. Finish The Dig without having to use a walkthrough
2. Complete my collection of Metroid Games
3. Beat Contra 4 with some dignity left
4. Avenge the loss of Jigglypuff if it doesn't make it into smash bros brawl
5. Buy a Ford Mustang GT 390 and become the new Steve McQueen

Those all sound fairly feasible, except for Contra, that game is beautifully difficult.

Am I the only one who was really disappointed with Nintendo's virtual console game offerings for Christmas? I'm basically an infant, and with really no other way of playing classic, much heralded games of a bygone era, I was really looking forward to some games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Mega Man, Super Mario RPG, and of course Mother. But Nintendo has to go ruin Christmas with their sci-fi themed crap. Seriously, Christmas is ruined. Anyway, I guess I have to make this list formed, so here:

SPARTACUS' BOTTOM 2 OF 2007 RETRO
1. Nintendo ruined Christmas
2. Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis is apparently not the game I remember having so much fun with in the dentist's waiting room when I was little and it stole ten bucks from me

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on...

I know I'm late to the party (I just finished listening to the ast episode), but ya'll forgot the best Christmas moment in gaming history! It was in Secret of Mana, where you were tasked with defeating an ice monster that ended up turning into--no joke--Santa Claus. He explained that he became a monster because children no longer believed in him. Rudolph was so scared. Aww.

Heyasuki here,

Geez my profile is finally working! who knew;

My New Year's resolution is to stop getting side tracked, what I mean is 360 had such a good year and I've been ignoring my PS2, I still have many titles to complete on that bad boy.

Also like man of us who work and have little time, I want to try my best and finish a game before I start a new one. I'm 90% through Dragon Quest VIII and my wife is always at me to finish it off.

Virtual console for me this year has been a joke, at least on live games get a graphical update; I want to see Mario Bros. is HD people!

Happy new year RFGO crew!

Most of my resolutions revolve around getting some direction in my life, but I suppose I do have one game-related resolution that can actually help with that, which is to buckle down and start on a mod project that could be a lot of fun.

Looking forward to the show!
