Christmas is only a couple of days away, and we've finished baking our cookies and wrapping our presents. Now there's nothing left but to curl up by the fire and sip some hot chocolate while we take a look back at some of our fondest holiday gaming memories.
I'm not sure what it is that's keeping said fire going, but Hamza was in here earlier, saying something about not being able to find his desk. Come to think of it, I haven't checked to see whether mine was still around, either. Um ... Okay, yeah, you know what? You guys leave us some questions in the comments, I need to go check on something.

Besides that, it might have been when I got my Gameboy, or when I got my Gameboy Advance, which respectively got me into the Pokemon video games and the Metroid series as I received Pokemon Yellow and Metroid Fusion.
The thing is, most of these games I've gotten at Christmas seem to be weaker games of the series they belong to, but I am enamoured with them just because I had so much fun with them. I suppose it's just festive Retrogoggles, but I just love most of those games.
Now my question for you guys is, have your families ever given video games you simply didn't want/were bad?
And a simple question for you: What was the most awesome video game related gift you got for Christmas?
And are there any Christmas related video games you like?
BEST CHRISTMAS EVAR FORDAWIN!
Hands down, it was my SNES, and playing Super Mario World with my older was like the greatest video game chapter in my life..
Which speaking of, I remember it was a huge deal when I got my 64 for Christmas. My mom gave me a clue instead of a present, and I had to go scavenge all over the house to find the thing. I was playing Mario 64 for endless hours after that...
with titles like home alone 1 and 2, and the nightmare before christmas: oogies revenge, sims 2 christmas pack... christmas themed games have always been a terrible and horrible scar on video games, is there a developer that could get it right one of these years or am I hoping for too much? like a game where you play as santa, where its part flight sim, part racing game, part sneaking game could be quite awesome... if done right. like hideo kojima and natsuki isaki(ace combat 4, 5, zero, and six) would have to combine efforts... to make it work. oh well, looks like that will never happen...
And did you just start asking for money after awhile?
Also, seeing as it's the coldest time of the year I think that this question is appropriate;
which is your favourite/less clichéd icy-snowy themed level from any game?
Merry Christmas DTOID!
Here's a special gift just for you Cheeburga!
Anyway, question time. With platforms on the current consoles such as the Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and WiiWare, do you think companies are missing out on an opportunity a fix of new games with retro ideals for cheap prices? We get 2D games on the portable consoles which require carts and UMDs, yet the online services for home consoles go untouched save for rehashes of titles we've already played. I don't know about you, but I'd kill for a new 2D high-definition Sonic or Castlevania.
What, if any, is the shittiest video game-related present you have ever gotten?
Hope you all have an AMAZING holiday season!
A year or two after the Sega Genesis came out, my parents got me (and my twin brother) the system for Christmas, all wrapped up and looking pretty under the tree.
Well, me and my bro couldn't wait till Christmas to play, so what do we do? We grab the box in the middle of the night (like 2 week before Christmas day) and sneak it into our room.
Using razor blades, we very carefully removed the wrapping paper, and took the system out of the box. We did the same with the games. We then carefully wrapped everything back up and placed it under the tree. Unless the boxes were carefully scrutinized, you couldn't tell that it had been tampered with.
We played with it for almost two weeks before Christmas, and never got caught. My parents wondered why we didn't play so much Genesis on Christmas morning. Hell, by that point we were burnt out on Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage lol.
I don't remember getting any early consoles for Christmas actually. The last I remember was a launch PS2, which was almost impossible to find and ridiculously overpriced (People bitching about the PS3 price have no idea). But I got one, along with Tekken Tag Tournament (Ugh) and the addictive SSX.
My worst happened last year, watching my brother unwrap his Wii knowing I wasn't getting one.
For reference, my brother is 11 years older than me. I'm 18 and he's 29.
Question time, what are the 3 games you most want to see on the Virtual Console next year? Also how creamed will the collective pant of RFGO! be if Chrono Trigger appears?
I discovered one of his Claytalities on my own, and that made my 13 year-old self rather giggly.
Alex gets a year's worth of Miller Lite and a sudden urge to want to play first person shooters that aren't named Bioshock or Half-Life.
Topher gets a Slurpee machine for his home and the promise that good games will come to XBLA.
Colette gets a gift card of unlimited value to use at the Square Enix Store and a magical laptop that allows her to still do RetroforceGo! when she's on all those damn plane flights.
Chad gets the actual life-size painting of him as Viggo from Ghostbusters II and a flux capacitor which he can use to go back in time and hang out with us at PAX '07 (WE MISSED YOU!).
And the greatest gift of all, some say, is that Rev. Anthony's heart grew three sizes that day!
Now, what are each of your holiday wishes for the gaming industry in '08, and if you could exchange amazing virtual gifts with people, what would they be?
For Cereal,
What games are you all looking forward to in the year to come?
Any old games you guys are playing again right now? Any you are planning on playing again next year?
Hahaha, oh man, couldn't keep a straight face there. The one big thing I want is some random Megaman swag, or a real-life Mr. Saturn, I'm pretty sure I would explode if I ever got one, though.
I also offed Mega Man II on hard. And Ninja Fucking Gaiden.
God it pisses me off that games are so fucking easy nowadays. If I could have anything for christmas, I would want games to be hard enough and well designed enough to actually have replayability. You can finish Ninja Gaiden in an hour. But how many ever have?
Oh, and Zelda II. I fucking love that game! What's everyone else's opinion on the retarded step child of the Zelda series?

My question may not be entirely video game-related, but that just depends on whether you guys get video game-related stuff for Christmas.
Do you guys still take steps to ensure that you’re surprised by your Christmas presents? Or, as you grew older, did you find that you (A) just didn’t care to be surprised anymore, and (B) preferred money/gift cards so you could buy what you wanted after Christmas instead of being surprised with something you didn’t care for/wouldn’t use?
In my case (I’m 21), it’s the latter. I can’t remember the last time I was surprised by a Christmas gift. Take this year as an example: two weeks ago, I bought Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Rock Band on PS3. I’m just having my mom reimburse me for the $250 or so (it was like $243 and change including tax) as a birthday/Christmas gift, even though my birthday was on November 11th. And last year, my mom was like, “If you can find a PS3 in a store, I’ll pay for it.” My brother and I don’t care, either — he’s known since Black Friday that he’s getting The Orange Box on 360.
And, of course,
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!
Firstly, what's the deal with not mentioning the Megaman Zero series on GBA at all? I would have to say that it is the best Megaman series available, but it got no love. not even a mention.
Secondly, I can settle the debate about MM2 vs MM3 for good and ever.
Which game had Top Man? MM3. If you got on board the fail boat to stupid land, Top Man would be your captain. HE'S A FUCKING SPINNING TOP!! For having Top Man as a boss, MM3 loses. And hard.
Thirdly, the question about MMX about "who would build robot animals?" I can answer that. Chad, imagine if you could build for yourself a robot dolphin. One that also shoots, I don't know, deadly Sonar Bubbles or could a drill for a nose for deep sea mining.
Well, I guess that's what happened in Megaman land. Someone wanted a giant robot penguin. Or a mammoth that shoots fire out its trunk. Someone loved these animals enough to create elemental robots in their image. I think you, of all people, can comprehend such devotion.
Coon already asked this but what was the most disappointing game you guys ever got? Mine was Dance Aerobics for the NES. Of course I could tell from the size of the present that it was a game. Imagine my disappointment at tearing open the wrapping and seeing the title.
Oddly enough mine came in 1997, which was one of the best years in memory. I got FF7, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, and a whole bunch of other games.
I also got some weak ass steering wheel controller contraption, shaped in the form of a Tv Remote. Worst Gift Ever. I love you anyway aunt ruth, RIP.
And if you're like me, did you ever ask your parents how the fuck Santa's Elves made video games?
Also, coonskin05, I basically already asked that question when I said "Now my question for you guys is, have your families ever given video games you simply didn't want/were bad?"
So yeah, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and everything like that.
Also I wish to contribute on the MM2/MM3 debate. I think MM3 is much superior, yes it might have top man which is one of the lamest boss, but it's stage is pretty good. Also all the Boss from MM2 are present. The music is better, graphics more polished, the introduction of Rush (not item 1,2,3), the slide, protoman. A more complex story line.
And I wonder if I am the only one that beats needle man as the first boss with the standard gun ? That way I get rush jet right away.
The Metal Blade will rape your family and kick your dog.
Also what Eternal Death Slayer asked(in my case i found the receipt of Star Fox for the SNES a week before Xmas and... yeah that was my gift).
Merry Xmas guys!! May the retrogoddess (Colette?) smile upon you.
As for memories, is 12 years long enough to be considered "Retro"? Cuz if it is my favorite Christmas memory was when my parents got me a Playstation. I had been begging for one since I played it at the neighbors in like August, but they would always say no. Christmas finally rolls around and I'm bummed because there's no packages big enough to be a Playstation under the tree.
I'm sitting there opening stuff, everything is just kind of meh. Then I open up a box and find pants. I was like WTF because my parents were always cool enough to not resort to clothes for Christmas. They played stupid doing the whole "What'd you get?" thing so I'd take the pants out of the box, and under the pants sat a Playstation.
Needless to say it caught me off guard and I lost my shit like the N64 kid.
I mean, kids today, for example, will have their first taste of multiplayer gaming over something like X-Box Live and junk, but some of my fondest memories are having friends or my brother around and just playing side by side long into the night. I mean, have you ever tried to finish Double Dragon II by yourself? Fucking hell. But there we were, real brothers, playing as brothers in a game, side by side, kicking ass.
But now all multiplayer gaming has to be online, or else it's not really multiplayer. And it has to have voice chat. And friend's lists. And downloadable content. And game modes.
Back in my day, gaming was done side by side. Voice chat was over the phone, asking someone to come over and play. Friends lists were whoever could bring their own controller when you ran out. Downloadable content didn't exist, you simply took a few pre-existing tools and made up your own, without relying on the game to set the rules for you.
Bah, I'm tired and cranky and sick of christmas and, by the sounds of this rant, old and arthritic. Just something to think about. Get some goddamn friends over and play for reals.
